A high-flux atomic strontium oven with light-driven flux modulation

A high-flux source of strontium atoms is required for cold atom quantum technology applications. We present a re-entrant oven design that avoids the need for any vacuum feed-throughs and has an inherent temperature gradient to guard against clogging of the nozzle. The nozzle is fabricated by micro-machining of fused silica using selective laser etching; this specialised technique is capable of making many thousands of fine microchannels and is suitable for batch production. Operating with only electrical heating, using <20W of electrical power, a total flux of $8(1)\times 10^{14}$ atoms/s is achieved at an oven temperature of 475{\deg}C, of which we estimate $1.8(2)\times 10^{13}$ atoms/s could be captured. A heated in-vacuum sapphire window grants optical access directly opposite the oven, and can be cleared of metallization without breaking vacuum. We used this optical access to modulate the flux of the atomic beam by direct illumination of the nozzle and the strontium metal with high-power laser light. Heating by laser light increased the useful flux by a factor of up to 16(3) on a timescale of 40s, and a factor of 2.5(5) on a timescale of 1s. This flux modulation serves to increase the operating lifetime of the oven. We report experimental measurements of the performance of the oven in long-term operation over many months.

Observation of dual electromagnetically induced transparencies in cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms

We have observed two dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectra in probe transmission through cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). These dual EIT peaks are generated in two different N-systems formed by probe, coupling and control beams interacting with different levels in $D_{2}$ line transitions of $^{87}Rb$ atom. The dependence of spectral features of two N-systems on driving beams (\textit{i.e.} coupling and control beams) strength and detuning has been investigated. The results show that the dual EIT spectral features in both the N-systems can be manipulated by varying the strength and detuning of both the driving beams. The two N-systems have been modelled theoretically using a density matrix formalism and results have shown a reasonable agreement with the experimental observations.

Spectral characteristics of a modified inverted-Y system beyond rotating wave approximation

The spectral properties of a multilevel atomic system interacting with multiple electromagnetic fields, a modified inverted-Y system, have been theoretically investigated. In this study, a numerical matrix propagation method has been employed to study the spectral characteristics beyond the validity regime of the rotating wave approximations. The studied atomic system, comprising of several basic sub-systems i.e. lambda, ladder, vee, N and inverted-Y, is useful to study the interdependence among these basic sub-systems. The key features of the obtained probe spectra as a function of coupling strength and detuning of the associated electromagnetic fields show inter-conversion, splitting and shifting of the transparency and absorption peaks. The dressed and doubly dressed state formalism have been utilized to explain the numerically obtained results. This study has application in design of novel optical devices capable of multi-channel optical communication along with switching.

Coupling field dependent quantum interference effects in a $Λ$-system of $^{87}Rb$ atom

A $Λ$-system in $D_2$ line transition of the $^{87}Rb$ atom has been investigated for quantum interference effects for different configurations of coupling field. With a travelling wave coupling field (co-propagating with probe field), the probe beam shows the earlier known electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect at the resonance. With a standing wave coupling field (which is co- and counter-propagating with probe beam), the probe EIT gets transformed into an electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). A variation in coupling beam power has shown that, at high coupling power, EIA signals have much larger amplitude and slope than those of EIT signals with and without applied magnetic field. These EIA signals can be useful for tight laser frequency locking and optical switching.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in $Λ$-systems of $^{87}Rb$ atom in magnetic field

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) observations in two $Λ$-systems of $^{87}Rb$ atom, $|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=1\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$ and $|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=2\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$, have been investigated in detail and the results are found consistent with our proposed theoretical models. The second $Λ$-system provides EIT signal with higher magnitude than the first system, both in absence and in presence of an applied magnetic field. The observed steeper slope of the EIT signal in presence of the magnetic field can enable one to achieve tight frequency locking of lasers using these EIT signals.
