Grid Influenced Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading

This paper proposes a peer-to-peer energy trading scheme that can help the centralized power system to reduce the total electricity demand of its customers at the peak hour. To do so, a cooperative Stackelberg game is formulated, in which the centralized power system acts as the leader that needs to decide on a price at the peak demand period to incentivize prosumers to not seeking any energy from it. The prosumers, on the other hand, act as followers and respond to the leader's decision by forming suitable coalitions with neighboring prosumers in order to participate in P2P energy trading to meet their energy demand. The properties of the proposed Stackelberg game are studied. It is shown that the game has a unique and stable Stackelberg equilibrium, as a result of the stability of prosumers' coalitions. At the equilibrium, the leader chooses its strategy using a derived closed-form expression, while the prosumers choose their equilibrium coalition structure. An algorithm is proposed that enables the centralized power system and the prosumers to reach the equilibrium solution. Numerical case studies demonstrate the beneficial properties of the proposed scheme.

Identifying Indoor Points of Interest via Mobile Crowdsensing: An Experimental Study

This paper presents a mobile crowdsensing approach to identify the indoor points of interest (POI) by exploiting Wi-Fi similarity measurements. Since indoor environments are lacking the GPS positioning accuracy when compared to outdoors, we rely on widely available Wi-Fi access points (AP) in contemporary urban indoor environments, to accurately identify user POI. We propose a smartphone application based system architecture to scan the surrounding Wi-Fi AP and measure the cosine similarity of received signal strengths (RSS), and demonstrate through the experimental results that it is possible to identify the distinct POI of users, and the common POI among users of a given indoor environment.

A New Insight into GAMP and AMP

A concise expectation propagation (EP) based message passing algorithm (MPA) is derived for the general measurement channel. By neglecting some high-order infinitesimal terms, the EP-MPA is proven to be equivalent to the Generalized Approximate Message Passing (GAMP), which exploits central limit theorem and Taylor expansion to simplify the belief propagation process. Furthermore, for additive white gaussian noise measurement channels, EP-MPA is proven to be equivalent to the AMP. Such intrinsic equivalence between EP and GAMP/AMP offers a new insight into GAMP and AMP via a unified message passing rule for non-linear processing, and may provide clues towards building new MPAs in solving more general non-linear problems.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Communication

The adoption of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) for downlink multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station is investigated in this paper. We develop energy-efficient designs for both the transmit power allocation and the phase shifts of the surface reflecting elements, subject to individual link budget guarantees for the mobile users. This leads to non-convex design optimization problems for which to tackle we propose two computationally affordable approaches, capitalizing on alternating maximization, gradient descent search, and sequential fractional programming. Specifically, one algorithm employs gradient descent for obtaining the RIS phase coefficients, and fractional programming for optimal transmit power allocation. Instead, the second algorithm employs sequential fractional programming for the optimization of the RIS phase shifts. In addition, a realistic power consumption model for RIS-based systems is presented, and the performance of the proposed methods is analyzed in a realistic outdoor environment. In particular, our results show that the proposed RIS-based resource allocation methods are able to provide up to $300\%$ higher energy efficiency, in comparison with the use of regular multi-antenna amplify-and-forward relaying.

Leveraging recent availability of large amounts of diverse crowdsensed data, many studies have made contributions to this field in various aspects. They need proper review and summary. In this paper, therefore, we first review these recent studies with a proper taxonomy with corresponding examples. Then, based on the experience learnt from the studies, we provide a comprehensive tutorial for future research, which introduces and discusses popular crowdsensed data types, different human mobility subjects, and common data preprocessing and analysis methods. Special emphasis is made on the matching between data types and mobility subjects. Finally, we present two research projects as case studies to demonstrate the entire process of understanding urban human mobility through crowdsensed data in city-wide scale and building-wide scale respectively. Beyond demonstration purpose, the two case studies also make contributions to their category of certain crowdsensed data type and mobility subject.

Indoor Signal Focusing with Deep Learning Designed Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) comprised of tunable unit elements have been recently considered in indoor communication environments for focusing signal reflections to intended user locations. However, the current proofs of concept require complex operations for the RIS configuration, which are mainly realized via wired control connections. In this paper, we present a deep learning method for efficient online wireless configuration of RISs when deployed in indoor communication environments. According to the proposed method, a database of coordinate fingerprints is implemented during an offline training phase. This fingerprinting database is used to train the weights and bias of a properly designed Deep Neural Network (DNN), whose role is to unveil the mapping between the measured coordinate information at a user location and the configuration of the RIS's unit cells that maximizes this user's received signal strength. During the online phase of the presented method, the trained DNN is fed with the measured position information at the target user to output the optimal phase configurations of the RIS for signal power focusing on this intended location. Our realistic simulation results using ray tracing on a three dimensional indoor environment demonstrate that the proposed DNN-based configuration method exhibits its merits for all considered cases, and effectively increases the achievable throughput at the target user location.

Deep Learning for UL/DL Channel Calibration in Generic Massive MIMO Systems

One of the fundamental challenges to realize massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications is the accurate acquisition of channel state information for a plurality of users at the base station. This is usually accomplished in the UpLink (UL) direction profiting from the time division duplexing mode. In practical base station transceivers, there exist inevitably nonlinear hardware components, like signal amplifiers and various analog filters, which complicates the calibration task. To deal with this challenge, we design a deep neural network for channel calibration between the UL and DownLink (DL) directions. During the initial training phase, the deep neural network is trained from both UL and DL channel measurements. We then leverage the trained deep neural network with the instantaneously estimated UL channel to calibrate the DL one, which is not observable during the UL transmission phase. Our numerical results confirm the merits of the proposed approach, and show that it can achieve performance comparable to conventional approaches, like the Agros method and methods based on least squares, that however assume linear hardware behavior models. More importantly, considering generic nonlinear relationships between the UL and DL channels, it is demonstrated that our deep neural network approach exhibits robust performance, even when the number of training sequences is limited.

Crowd-sensing Simultaneous Localization and Radio Fingerprint Mapping based on Probabilistic Similarity Models

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) has been richly researched in past years particularly with regard to range-based or visual-based sensors. Instead of deploying dedicated devices that use visual features, it is more pragmatic to exploit the radio features to achieve this task, due to their ubiquitous nature and the wide deployment of Wifi wireless network. In this paper, we present a novel approach for crowd-sensing simultaneous localization and radio fingerprint mapping (C-SLAM-RF) in large unknown indoor environments. The proposed system makes use of the received signal strength (RSS) from surrounding Wifi access points (AP) and the motion tracking data from a smart phone (Tango as an example). These measurements are captured duration the walking of multiple users in unknown environments without map information and location of the AP. The experiments were done in a university building with dynamic environment and the results show that the proposed system is capable of estimating the tracks of a group of users with an accuracy of 1.74 meters when compared to the ground truth acquired from a point cloud-based SLAM.

Smart Radio Environments Empowered by AI Reconfigurable Meta-Surfaces: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Future wireless networks are expected to constitute a distributed intelligent wireless communications, sensing, and computing platform, which will have the challenging requirement of interconnecting the physical and digital worlds in a seamless and sustainable manner. Currently, two main factors prevent wireless network operators from building such networks: 1) the lack of control of the wireless environment, whose impact on the radio waves cannot be customized, and 2) the current operation of wireless radios, which consume a lot of power because new signals are generated whenever data has to be transmitted. In this paper, we challenge the usual "more data needs more power and emission of radio waves" status quo, and motivate that future wireless networks necessitate a smart radio environment: A transformative wireless concept, where the environmental objects are coated with artificial thin films of electromagnetic and reconfigurable material (that are referred to as intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces), which are capable of sensing the environment and of applying customized transformations to the radio waves. Smart radio environments have the potential to provide future wireless networks with uninterrupted wireless connectivity, and with the capability of transmitting data without generating new signals but recycling existing radio waves. This paper overviews the current research efforts on smart radio environments, the enabling technologies to realize them in practice, the need of new communication-theoretic models for their analysis and design, and the long-term and open research issues to be solved towards their massive deployment. In a nutshell, this paper is focused on discussing how the availability of intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces will allow wireless network operators to redesign common and well-known network communication paradigms.

A Motivational Game-Theoretic Approach for Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading in the Smart Grid

Peer-to-peer trading in energy networks is expected to be exclusively conducted by the prosumers of the network with negligible influence from the grid. This raises the critical question: how can enough prosumers be encouraged to participate in peer-to-peer trading so as to make its operation sustainable and beneficial to the overall electricity network? To this end, this paper proposes how a motivational psychology framework can be used effectively to design peer-to-peer energy trading to increase user participation. To do so, first, the state-of-the-art of peer-to-peer energy trading literature is discussed by following a systematic classification, and gaps in existing studies are identified. Second, a motivation psychology framework is introduced, which consists of a number of motivational models that a prosumer needs to satisfy before being convinced to participate in energy trading. Third, a game-theoretic peer-to-peer energy trading scheme is developed, its relevant properties are studied, and it is shown that the coalition among different prosumers is a stable coalition. Fourth, through numerical case studies, it is shown that the proposed model can reduce carbon emissions by 18.38% and 9.82% in a single day in Summer and Winter respectively compared to a feed-in-tariff scheme. The proposed scheme is also shown to reduce the cost of energy up to 118 cents and 87 cents per day in Summer and Winter respectively. Finally, how the outcomes of the scheme satisfy all the motivational psychology models is discussed, which subsequently shows its potential to attract users to participate in energy trading.

Capacity-Achieving MIMO-NOMA: Iterative LMMSE Detection

This paper considers a low-complexity iterative Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) multi-user detector for the Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output system with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (MIMO-NOMA), where multiple single-antenna users simultaneously communicate with a multiple-antenna base station (BS). While LMMSE being a linear detector has a low complexity, it has suboptimal performance in multi-user detection scenario due to the mismatch between LMMSE detection and multi-user decoding. Therefore, in this paper, we provide the matching conditions between the detector and decoders for MIMO-NOMA, which are then used to derive the achievable rate of the iterative detection. We prove that a matched iterative LMMSE detector can achieve (i) the optimal capacity of symmetric MIMO-NOMA with any number of users, (ii) the optimal sum capacity of asymmetric MIMO-NOMA with any number of users, (iii) all the maximal extreme points in the capacity region of asymmetric MIMO-NOMA with any number of users, (iv) all points in the capacity region of two-user and three-user asymmetric MIMO-NOMA systems. In addition, a kind of practical low-complexity error-correcting multiuser code, called irregular repeat-accumulate code, is designed to match the LMMSE detector. Numerical results shows that the bit error rate performance of the proposed iterative LMMSE detection outperforms the state-of-art methods and is within 0.8dB from the associated capacity limit.

RF-Based Direction Finding of UAVs Using DNN

This paper presents a sparse denoising autoencoder (SDAE)-based deep neural network (DNN) for the direction finding (DF) of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). It is motivated by the practical challenges associated with classical DF algorithms such as MUSIC and ESPRIT. The proposed DF scheme is practical and low-complex in the sense that a phase synchronization mechanism, an antenna calibration mechanism, and the analytical model of the antenna radiation pattern are not essential. Also, the proposed DF method can be implemented using a single-channel RF receiver. The paper validates the proposed method experimentally as well.

Accurately estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of industrial machinery is beneficial in many real-world applications. Estimation techniques have mainly utilized linear models or neural network based approaches with a focus on short term time dependencies. This paper, introduces a system model that incorporates temporal convolutions with both long term and short term time dependencies. The proposed network learns salient features and complex temporal variations in sensor values, and predicts the RUL. A data augmentation method is used for increased accuracy. The proposed method is compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms on publicly available datasets. It demonstrates promising results, with superior results for datasets obtained from complex environments.

Iterative Channel Estimation Using LSE and Sparse Message Passing for MmWave MIMO Systems

We propose an iterative channel estimation algorithm based on the Least Square Estimation (LSE) and Sparse Message Passing (SMP) algorithm for the Millimeter Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems. The channel coefficients of the mmWave MIMO are approximately modeled as a Bernoulli-Gaussian distribution and the channel matrix is sparse with only a few non-zero entries. By leveraging the advantage of sparseness, we propose an algorithm that iteratively detects the exact locations and values of non-zero entries of the sparse channel matrix. At each iteration, the locations are detected by the SMP, and values are estimated with the LSE. We also analyze the Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CLRB), and show that the proposed algorithm is a minimum variance unbiased estimator under the assumption that we have the partial priori knowledge of the channel. Furthermore, we employ the Gaussian approximation for message densities under density evolution to simplify the analysis of the algorithm, which provides a simple method to predict the performance of the proposed algorithm. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm has much better performance than the existing sparse estimators, especially when the channel is sparse. In addition, our proposed algorithm converges to the CRLB of the genie-aided estimation of sparse channels with only five turbo iterations.

Gaussian Message Passing for Overloaded Massive MIMO-NOMA

This paper considers a low-complexity Gaussian Message Passing (GMP) scheme for a coded massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (massive MIMO-NOMA), in which a base station with $N_s$ antennas serves $N_u$ sources simultaneously in the same frequency. Both $N_u$ and $N_s$ are large numbers, and we consider the overloaded cases with $N_u>N_s$. The GMP for MIMO-NOMA is a message passing algorithm operating on a fully-connected loopy factor graph, which is well understood to fail to converge due to the correlation problem. In this paper, we utilize the large-scale property of the system to simplify the convergence analysis of the GMP under the overloaded condition. First, we prove that the \emph{variances} of the GMP definitely converge to the mean square error (MSE) of Linear Minimum Mean Square Error (LMMSE) multi-user detection. Secondly, the \emph{means} of the traditional GMP will fail to converge when $ N_u/N_s< (\sqrt{2}-1)^{-2}\approx5.83$. Therefore, we propose and derive a new convergent GMP called scale-and-add GMP (SA-GMP), which always converges to the LMMSE multi-user detection performance for any $N_u/N_s>1$, and show that it has a faster convergence speed than the traditional GMP with the same complexity. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the validity and accuracy of the theoretical results presented.

Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading with Sustainable User Participation: A Game Theoretic Approach

This paper explores the feasibility of social cooperation between prosumers within an energy network in establishing their sustainable participation in peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading. In particular, a canonical coalition game (CCG) is utilized to propose a P2P energy trading scheme, in which a set of participating prosumers form a coalition group to trade their energy, if there is any, with one another. By exploring the concept of the core of the designed CCG framework, the mid-market rate is utilized as a pricing mechanism of the proposed P2P trading to confirm the stability of the coalition as well as to guarantee the benefit to the prosumers for forming the social coalition. The paper further introduces the motivational psychology models that are relevant to the proposed P2P scheme and it is shown that the outcomes of proposed P2P energy trading scheme satisfy the discussed models. Consequently, it is proven that the proposed scheme is consumer-centric that has the potential to corroborate sustainable prosumers participation in P2P energy trading. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the beneficial properties of the proposed scheme.
