Efficient Information Reconciliation for Energy-Time Entanglement Quantum Key Distribution

Graph based codes such as low density parity check (LDPC) codes have been shown promising for the information reconciliation phase in quantum key distribution (QKD). However, existing graph coding schemes have not fully utilized the properties of the QKD channel. In this work, we first investigate the channel statistics for discrete variable (DV) QKD based on energy-time entangled photons. We then establish a so-called balanced modulation scheme that is promising for this channel. Based on the modulation, we propose a joint local-global graph coding scheme that is expected to achieve good error-correction performance.

Coherent satellites in multi-spectral regenerative frequency microcombs

Multi-spectral frequency combs provide frontier architectures for laser standoff spectroscopy, optical clockwork, and high-capacity optical communications. Frequency microcombs, aided by their high-quality resonances and inherent third-order nonlinear susceptibility, have demonstrated remarkable impact in frequency metrology and synthesis. However, microcombs are often with limited spectral bandwidth bounded by the intrinsic second-order chromatic dispersion and the consequently low intensities at the spectral edges. To enhance the applications of frequency combs, a spectrally-broad comb generation scheme is often desired. Here we report coherent satellite clusters in multi-spectral regenerative frequency microcombs with enhanced intensities at the octave points and engineered frequency span. Beyond the conventional bandwidth of parametric oscillation, the regenerative satellites are facilitated by higher-order dispersion control allowing for multi-phase-matching in the microcavities. The frequency span of the multi-spectral regenerative satellites is deterministically controlled from 57 THz to 126 THz by pumping at C- and L- bands. We demonstrate that the regenerative satellite preserves the coherence with the central comb through the nonlinear parametric process. We further show the mirrored appearance of the satellite transition dynamics including each comb state that are simultaneously observed at the central comb. These multi-spectral regenerative satellites extend the scope of parametric-based frequency combs and provide a unique platform with wide applications.

Design of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in integrated hybrid SixNy-PPLN waveguides

High-efficient and high-purity photon sources are highly desired for quantum information processing. We report the design of a chip-scale hybrid SixNy and thin film periodically-poled lithium niobate waveguide for generating high-purity type-II spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) photons in telecommunication band. The modeled second harmonic generation efficiency of 225% W^(-1)*cm^(-2) is obtained at 1560nm. Joint spectral analysis is performed to estimate the frequency correlation of SPDC photons, yielding intrinsic purity with up to 95.17%. The generation rate of these high-purity photon pairs is estimated to be 2.87 * 10^7 pairs/s/mW within the bandwidth of SPDC. Our chip-scale hybrid waveguide design has the potential for large scale on-chip quantum information processing and integrated photon-efficient quantum key distribution through high-dimensional time-energy encoding.

On-chip directional octave-spanning supercontinuum generation from high order mode in near ultraviolet to infrared spectrum using AlN waveguides

On-chip ultraviolet to infrared (UV-IR) spectrum frequency metrology is of crucial importance as a characterization tool for fundamental studies on quantum physics, chemistry, and biology. Due to the strong material dispersion, traditional techniques fail to demonstrate the device that can be applied to generate coherent broadband spectrum that covers the full UV-IR wavelengths. In this work, we explore several novel techniques for supercontinuum generation covering near-UV to near-IR spectrum using AlN micro-photonic waveguides, which is essential for frequency metrology applications: First, to create anomalous dispersion, high order mode (TE10) was adopted, together with its carefully designed high efficiency excitation strategies. Second, the spectrum was broadened by soliton fission through third order dispersion and second harmonic generation, by which directional energy transfer from near-IR to near-UV can be obtained. Finally, high quality single crystalline AlN material was used to provide broadband transparency from UV to IR. Under decently low pulse energy of 0.36 nJ, the experimental spectrum from supercontinuum generation covers from 490 nm to over 1100 nm, with a second harmonic generation band covering from 405 nm to 425 nm. This work paves the way towards UV-IR full spectrum on-chip frequency metrology applications.

Probing 10 μK stability and residual drifts in the cross-polarized dual-mode stabilization of single-crystal ultrahigh-Q optical resonators

The thermal stability of monolithic optical microresonators is essential for many mesoscopic photonic applications such as ultrastable laser oscillators, photonic microwave clocks, and precision navigation and sensing. Their fundamental performance is largely bounded by thermal instability. Sensitive thermal monitoring can be achieved by utilizing cross-polarized dual-mode beat frequency metrology, determined by the polarization-dependent thermorefractivity of a single-crystal microresonator, wherein the heterodyne radio-frequency beat pins down the optical mode volume temperature for precision stabilization. Here, we investigate the correlation between the dual-mode beat frequency and the resonator temperature with time and the associated spectral noise of the dual-mode beat frequency in a single-crystal ultrahigh-Q MgF2 resonator to illustrate that dual-mode frequency metrology can potentially be utilized for resonator temperature stabilization reaching the fundamental thermal noise limit in a realistic system. We show a resonator long-term temperature stability of 8.53 μK after stabilization and unveil various sources that hinder the stability from reaching sub-μK in the current system, an important step towards compact precision navigation, sensing and frequency reference architectures.

Spatially controlled electrostatic doping in graphene p-i-n junction for hybrid silicon photodiode

Sufficiently large depletion region for photocarrier generation and separation is a key factor for two-dimensional material optoelectronic devices, but few device configurations has been explored for a deterministic control of a space charge region area in graphene with convincing scalability. Here we investigate a graphene-silicon p-i-n photodiode defined in a foundry processed planar photonic crystal waveguide structure, achieving visible - near-infrared, zero-bias and ultrafast photodetection. Graphene is electrically contacting to the wide intrinsic region of silicon and extended to the p an n doped region, functioning as the primary photocarrier conducting channel for electronic gain. Graphene significantly improves the device speed through ultrafast out-of-plane interfacial carrier transfer and the following in-plane built-in electric field assisted carrier collection. More than 50 dB converted signal-to-noise ratio at 40 GHz has been demonstrated under zero bias voltage, with quantum efficiency could be further amplified by hot carrier gain on graphene-i Si interface and avalanche process on graphene-doped Si interface. With the device architecture fully defined by nanomanufactured substrate, this study is the first demonstration of post-fabrication-free two-dimensional material active silicon photonic devices.

Enhanced interlayer neutral excitons and trions in trilayer van der Waals heterostructures

Vertically stacked van der Waals heterostructures constitute a promising platform for providing tailored band alignment with enhanced excitonic systems. Here we report observations of neutral and charged interlayer excitons in trilayer WSe2-MoSe2-WSe2 van der Waals heterostructures and their dynamics. The addition of a WSe2 layer in the trilayer leads to significantly higher photoluminescence quantum yields and tunable spectral resonance compared to its bilayer heterostructures at cryogenic temperatures. The observed enhancement in the photoluminescence quantum yield is due to significantly larger electron-hole overlap and higher light absorbance in the trilayer heterostructure, supported via first-principle pseudopotential calculations based on spin-polarized density functional theory. We further uncover the temperature- and power-dependence, as well as time-resolved photoluminescence of the trilayer heterostructure interlayer neutral excitons and trions. Our study elucidates the prospects of manipulating light emission from interlayer excitons and designing atomic heterostructures from first-principles for optoelectronics.

Terabit optical OFDM superchannel transmission via coherent carriers of a hybrid chip-scale soliton frequency comb

We demonstrate seamless channel multiplexing and high bitrate superchannel transmission of coherent optical orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-OFDM) data signals utilizing a dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) frequency comb generated in an on-chip microcavity. Aided by comb line multiplication through Nyquist pulse modulation, the high stability and mutual coherence among mode-locked Kerr comb lines are exploited for the first time to eliminate the guard intervals between communication channels and achieve full spectral density bandwidth utilization. Spectral efficiency as high as 2.625 bit/Hz/s is obtained for 180 CO-OFDM bands encoded with 12.75 Gbaud 8-QAM data, adding up to total bitrate of 6.885 Tb/s within 2.295 THz frequency comb bandwidth. Our study confirms that high coherence is the key superiority of Kerr soliton frequency combs over independent laser diodes, as a multi-spectral coherent laser source for high-bandwidth high-spectral-density transmission networks.

Broadband gate-tunable THz plasmons in graphene heterostructures

Graphene, a unique two-dimensional material of carbon in a honeycomb lattice, has brought remarkable breakthroughs across the domains of electronics, mechanics, and thermal transport, driven by the quasiparticle Dirac fermions obeying a linear dispersion. Here we demonstrate a counter-pumped all-optical difference frequency process to coherently generate and control THz plasmons in atomic layer graphene with an octave tunability and high efficiency. We leverage the inherent surface asymmetry of graphene for a strong second-order nonlinear polarizability chi(2), which together with tight plasmon field confinement, enables a robust difference frequency signal at THz frequencies. The counter-pumped resonant process on graphene uniquely achieves both energy and momentum conservation. Consequently we demonstrate a dual-layer graphene heterostructure that achieves the charge- and gate-tunability of the THz plasmons over an octave, from 9.4 THz to 4.7 THz, bounded only by the pump amplifier optical bandwidth. Theoretical modeling supports our single-volt-level gate tuning and optical-bandwidth-bounded 4.7 THz phase-matching measurements, through the random phase approximation with phonon coupling, saturable absorption, and below the Landau damping, to predict and understand the graphene carrier plasmon physics.

Panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging for seamless measurements of slowly-evolved femtosecond pulse dynamics

Single-shot real-time characterization of optical waveforms with sub-picosecond resolution is essential for investigating various ultrafast optical dynamics. However, the finite temporal recording length of current techniques hinders comprehensive understanding of many intriguing ultrafast optical phenomena that evolve over a time scale much longer than their fine temporal details. Inspired by the space-time duality and by stitching of multiple microscopic images to achieve a larger field of view in the spatial domain, here a panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging (PARTI) system is devised to scale up the temporal recording length without sacrificing the resolution. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the PARTI system is applied to study the dynamic waveforms of slowly-evolved dissipative Kerr solitons in an ultrahigh-Q microresonator. Two 1.5-ns-long comprehensive evolution portraits are reconstructed with 740-fs resolution and dissipative Kerr soliton transition dynamics, in which a multiplet soliton state evolves into stable singlet soliton state, are depicted.

Globally stable microresonator Turing pattern formation for coherent high-power THz radiation on-chip

In nonlinear microresonators driven by continuous-wave (cw) lasers, Turing patterns have been studied in the formalism of Lugiato-Lefever equation with emphasis on its high coherence and exceptional robustness against perturbations. Destabilization of Turing pattern and transition to spatio-temporal chaos, however, limits the available energy carried in the Turing rolls and prevents further harvest of their high coherence and robustness to noise. Here we report a novel scheme to circumvent such destabilization, by incorporating the effect of local mode hybridizations, and attain globally stable Turing pattern formation in chip-scale nonlinear oscillators, achieving a record high power conversion efficiency of 45% and an elevated peak-to-valley contrast of 100. The stationary Turing pattern is discretely tunable across 430 GHz on a THz carrier, with a fractional frequency sideband non-uniformity measured at 7.3x10^-14. We demonstrate the simultaneous microwave and optical coherence of the Turing rolls at different evolution stages through ultrafast optical correlation techniques. The free running Turing roll coherence, 9 kHz in 200 ms and 160 kHz in 20 minutes, is transferred onto a plasmonic photomixer for one of the highest power THz coherent generation at room-temperature, with 1.1% optical-to-THz power conversion. Its long-term stability can be further improved by more than two orders of magnitude, reaching an Allan deviation of 6x10^-10 at 100 s, with a simple computer-aided slow feedback control. The demonstrated on-chip coherent high-power Turing-THz system is promising to find applications in astrophysics, medical imaging, and wireless communications.

Mesoscopic chaos mediated by Drude electron-hole plasma in silicon optomechanical oscillators

Chaos has revolutionized the field of nonlinear science and stimulated foundational studies from neural networks, extreme event statistics, to physics of electron transport. Recent studies in cavity optomechanics provide a new platform to uncover quintessential architectures of chaos generation and the underlying physics. Here we report the generation of dynamical chaos in silicon-based monolithic optomechanical oscillators, enabled by the strong and coupled nonlinearities of two-photon-absorption induced Drude electron-hole plasma. Deterministic chaotic oscillation is achieved, and statistical and entropic characterization quantifies the chaos complexity at 60 fJ intracavity energies. The correlation dimension D2 is determined at 1.67 for the chaotic attractor, along with maximal Lyapunov exponent rate about 2.94 the fundamental optomechanical oscillation for fast adjacent trajectory divergence. Nonlinear dynamical maps demonstrate the subharmonics, bifurcations, and stable regimes, along with distinct transitional routes into chaos. This provides a CMOS-compatible and scalable architecture for understanding complex dynamics on the mesoscopic scale.

Microresonator-stabilized extended cavity diode laser for supercavity frequency stabilization

We demonstrate a simple, compact, and cost-effective laser noise reduction method for stabilizing an extended cavity diode laser to a 3x105 finesse mirror Fabry-Pérot (F-P) cavity corresponding to resonance linewidth of 10 kHz using a crystalline MgF2 whispering gallery mode microresonator (WGMR). The laser linewidth is reduced to sub-kHz such that a stable Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) error signal is built up. The wavelength of the pre-stabilized laser is tunable within a large bandwidth covering the high reflection mirror coating of a F-P supercavity.

Chasing the thermodynamical noise limit in whispering-gallery-mode resonators for ultrastable laser frequency stabilization

Ultrastable high-spectral-purity lasers have served as the cornerstone behind optical atomic clocks, quantum measurements, precision optical-microwave generation, high resolution optical spectroscopy and sensing. Hertz-level lasers stabilized to high finesse Fabry-Pérot mirror cavities are typically used for these studies but are large and fragile such that they have remained laboratory instruments. There is a clear demand in rugged miniaturized lasers operating potentially at comparable stabilities to those bulk lasers. Over the past decade, ultrahigh-Q optical whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators have served as a platform for low-noise microlasers but have not yet reached the ultimate stabilities defined by their fundamental noise. Here, we show the noise characteristics of WGM resonators and demonstrate a resonator-stabilized laser at the fundamental limit by compensating the intrinsic thermal expansion of a WGM resonator, allowing a sub-25 Hz linewidth and a 32 Hz Allan deviation on the 191 THz carrier in 100 ms integration. We also reveal the environmental sensitivities of the resonator at the thermodynamical noise limit and long-term frequency drifts governed by random-walk-noise statistics.

Six-wave mixing induced by free-carrier plasma in silicon nanowire waveguides

Nonlinear wave mixing in mesoscopic silicon structures is a fundamental nonlinear process with broad impact and applications. Silicon nanowire waveguides, in particular, have large third-order Kerr nonlinearity, enabling salient and abundant four-wave-mixing dynamics and functionalities. Besides the Kerr effect, in silicon waveguides two-photon absorption generates high free-carrier densities, with corresponding fifth-order nonlinearity in the forms of free-carrier dispersion and free-carrier absorption. However, whether these fifth-order free-carrier nonlinear effects can lead to six-wave-mixing dynamics still remains an open question until now. Here we report the demonstration of free-carrier-induced six-wave mixing in silicon nanowires. Unique features, including inverse detuning dependence of six-wave-mixing efficiency and its higher sensitivity to pump power, are originally observed and verfied by analytical prediction and numerical modeling. Additionally, asymmetric sideband generation is observed for different laser detunings, resulting from the phase-sensitive interactions between free-carrier six-wave-mixing and Kerr four-wave-mixing dynamics. These discoveries provide a new path for nonlinear multi-wave interactions in nanoscale platforms.

A stabilized chip-scale Kerr frequency comb via a high-Q reference photonic microresonator

We stabilize a chip-scale Si3N4 phase-locked Kerr frequency comb via locking the pump laser to an independent stable high-Q reference microresonator and locking the comb spacing to an external microwave oscillator. In this comb, the pump laser shift induces negligible impact on the comb spacing change. This scheme is a step towards miniaturization of the stabilized Kerr comb system as the microresonator reference can potentially be integrated on-chip. Fractional instability of the optical harmonics of the stabilized comb is limited by the microwave oscillator used for comb spacing lock below 1 s averaging time and coincides with the pump laser drift in the long term.

Harnessing high-dimensional hyperentanglement through a biphoton frequency comb

Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for secure information processing and communications, where hyperentanglement or high-dimensional entanglement has been separately proposed towards high data capacity and error resilience. The continuous-variable nature of the energy-time entanglement makes it an ideal candidate for efficient high-dimensional coding with minimal limitations. Here we demonstrate the first simultaneous high-dimensional hyperentanglement using a biphoton frequency comb to harness the full potential in both energy and time domain. The long-postulated Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum revival is exhibited, with up to 19 time-bins, 96.5% visibilities. We further witness the high-dimensional energy-time entanglement through Franson revivals, which is observed periodically at integer time-bins, with 97.8% visibility. This qudit state is observed to simultaneously violate the generalized Bell inequality by up to 10.95 deviations while observing recurrent Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt S-parameters up to 2.76. Our biphoton frequency comb provides a platform in photon-efficient quantum communications towards the ultimate channel capacity through energy-time-polarization high-dimensional encoding.
