Statistical Non-linear Model, Achievable Rates and Signal Detection for Photon-level Photomultiplier Receiver

We characterize the practical receiver in a wide range of signal intensity for optical wireless communication, from discrete pulse regime to continuous waveform regime. We first propose a statistical non-linear model based on the photomultiplier tube (PMT) multi-stage amplification and Poisson channel, and then derive the optimal and tractable suboptimal duty cycle with peak-power and average-power constraints for on-off key (OOK) modulation in linear regime. Subsequently, a threshold-based classifier is proposed to distinguish the PMT working regimes based on the non-linear model. Moreover, we derive the approximate performance of mean power detection with infinite sampling rate and finite over-sampling rate in the linear regime based on small dead time and central-limit theorem. We also fomulate a signal model in the non-linar regime. Furthermore, the performance of mean power detection and photon counting detection with maximum likelihood (ML) detection for different sampling rates is evaluated from both theoretical and numerical perspectives. We can conclude that the sample interval equivalent to dead time is a good choice, and lower sampling rate would significantly degrade the performance.

Clipping noise approximate analysis and power allocation for photon-detection-based DCO-OFDM and ACO-OFDM

The clipping noise of the photon-level detector for both direct current-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) is investigated. Based on Bussgang theorem and central limit theorem (CLT), we obtain the approximate closed-form SNR of each subcarrier, based on which we further formulate the power allocation among the subcarriers. Numerical results show that the SNR obtained from theoretical analysis can well approximate that obtained from simulation results, and uniform power allocation suffices to perform close to the optimized power allocation from Genetic Algorithm (GA) with significantly reduced computational complexity.

Pulse-laser Based Long-range Non-line-of-sight Ultraviolet Communication with Pulse Response Position Estimation

We propose pulse laser-based ultra-violet communication over long distance, such that the pulse response signals can be detected at the receiver at the cost of low data transmission rate. We characterize the signal and achievable performance for the pulse laser-based communication. Since the detection performance critically depends on the pulse response position estimation, we also propose two approaches to estimate the pulse response positions, one based on counting the number pulses in a window, and the other based on the correlation of pulse response shape and the number of detected photoelectrons. It is seen that the correlation-based position estimation approach can achieve more accurate estimation compared with the counting-based one.

Efficient File Delivery for Coded Prefetching in Shared Cache Networks with Multiple Requests Per User

We consider a centralized caching network, where a server serves several groups of users, each having a common shared homogeneous fixed-size cache and requesting arbitrary multiple files. An existing coded prefetching scheme is employed where each file is broken into multiple fragments and each cache stores multiple coded packets each formed by XORing fragments from different files. For such a system, we propose an efficient file delivery scheme with explicit constructions by the server to meet the arbitrary multi-requests of all user-groups. Specifically, the stored coded packets of each cache are classified into four types based on the composition of the file fragments encoded. A delivery strategy is developed, which separately delivers part of each packet type first and then combinatorially delivers the remaining different packet types in the last stage. The rate as well as the worst rate of the proposed delivery scheme are analyzed. We show that our caching model and delivery scheme can incorporate some existing coded caching schemes as special cases. Moreover, for the special case of uniform requests and uncoded prefetching, we make a comparison with existing results, and show that our approach can achieve a lower delivery rate. We also provide numerical results on the delivery rate for the proposed scheme.

LEOS-assisted Inter-GEOS Communication via Distributed-storage Coding

We consider a space communication network consisting of Geosynchronous Earth Orbit satellites (GEOSs) and Low Earth Orbit satellites (LEOSs). In case of no direct communication link between two GEOSs, the data exchange between them is through relay by the LEOSs. In particular, the source GEOS sends coded data to multiple LEOSs based on the distributed storage framework. The destination GEOS then retrieves certain amount of data from each LEOS for data reconstruction. For the GEOS-LEOS downlink, a regenerating-code-based transmission scheme is optimized to guarantee data reconstructability, where the transmission power allocation to the LEOSs is proposed to minimize the total transmission energy. We also consider the power allocation to minimize the total transmission time given the total transmission energy. For the LEOS-GEOS uplink, a flexible partial-downloading coding transmission scheme is proposed to guarantee data reconstructability, where the joint uploaded-data size and power allocations are proposed to minimize the total transmission energy or the total transmission time. Extensive simulation results are presented to evaluate the proposed algorithms and show that regenerating code can achieve lower transmission energy and shorter transmission time for data regeneration than conventional maximum-distance separable (MDS) code.

Constrained Partial Group Decoding with Max-Min Fairness for Multi-color Multi-user Visible Light Communication

A visible light communication (VLC) system can adopt multi-color light emitting diode (LED) arrays to support multiple users. In this paper, a multi-layer coding and constrained partial group decoding (CPGD) method is proposed to tackle strong color interference and increase the system throughput. After channel model formulation, user information rates are allocated and decoding order for all the received data layers is obtained by solving a max-min fairness problem using a greedy algorithm. An achievable rate is derived under the truncated Gaussian input distribution. To reduce the decoding complexity, a map on the decoding order and rate allocation is constructed for all positions of interest on the receiver plane and its size is reduced by a classification-based algorithm. Meanwhile, the symmetrical geometry of LED arrays is exploited. Finally, the transmitter-user association problem is formulated and solved by a genetic algorithm. It is observed that the system throughput increases as the receivers are slightly misaligned with corresponding LED arrays due to the reduced interference level, but decreases afterwards due to the weakened link gain.

A 1Mbps Real-time NLOS UV Scattering Communication System with Receiver Diversity over 1km

In the non-line of sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) scattering communication, the received signals exhibit the characteristics of discrete photoelectrons due to the extremely large path loss. We design and demonstrate an NLOS UV scattering communication system in this work, where the receiver-side signal detection is designed based on a discrete-time Poisson channel model. In our system, a laser and multiple photomultiplier tubes are employed as the optical transmitter and detector, respectively. Furthermore, we design algorithms for pulse-counting, synchronization, channel estimation and $LLR$ computation for hardware realization in FPGA board. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the proposed system design and specify the system key parameters. We perform field tests for real-time communication with the transmission range over $1$km, where the system throughput reaches $1$Mbps.

Adversarial Metric Learning

In the past decades, intensive efforts have been put to design various loss functions and metric forms for metric learning problem. These improvements have shown promising results when the test data is similar to the training data. However, the trained models often fail to produce reliable distances on the ambiguous test pairs due to the distribution bias between training set and test set. To address this problem, the Adversarial Metric Learning (AML) is proposed in this paper, which automatically generates adversarial pairs to remedy the distribution bias and facilitate robust metric learning. Specifically, AML consists of two adversarial stages, i.e. confusion and distinguishment. In confusion stage, the ambiguous but critical adversarial data pairs are adaptively generated to mislead the learned metric. In distinguishment stage, a metric is exhaustively learned to try its best to distinguish both the adversarial pairs and the original training pairs. Thanks to the challenges posed by the confusion stage in such competing process, the AML model is able to grasp plentiful difficult knowledge that has not been contained by the original training pairs, so the discriminability of AML can be significantly improved. The entire model is formulated into optimization framework, of which the global convergence is theoretically proved. The experimental results on toy data and practical datasets clearly demonstrate the superiority of AML to the representative state-of-the-art metric learning methodologies.

SCMA with Low Complexity Symmetric Codebook Design for Visible Light Communication

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is attracting significant research interests currently, which is considered as a promising multiple access technique for 5G systems. It serves as a good candidate for the future communication network with massive nodes due to its capability of handling user overloading. Introducing SCMA to visible light communication (VLC) can provide another opportunity on design of transmission protocols for the communication network with massive nodes due to the limited communication range of VLC, which reduces the interference intensity. However, when applying SCMA in VLC systems, we need to modify the SCMA codebook to accommodate the real and positive signal requirement for VLC.We apply multidimensional constellation design methods to SCMA codebook. To reduce the design complexity, we also propose a symmetric codebook design. For all the proposed design approaches, the minimum Euclidean distance aims to be maximized. Our symmetric codebook design can reduce design and detection complexity simultaneously. Simulation results show that our design implies fast convergence with respect to the number of iterations, and outperforms the design that simply modifies the existing approaches to VLC signal requirements.

A note on the vertex arboricity of signed graphs

A signed tree-coloring of a signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a vertex coloring $c$ so that $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is a forest for every $i\in c(u)$ and $u\in V(G)$, where $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is the subgraph of $(G,σ)$ whose vertex set is the set of vertices colored by $i$ or $-i$ and edge set is the set of positive edges with two end-vertices colored both by $i$ or both by $-i$, along with the set of negative edges with one end-vertex colored by $i$ and the other colored by $-i$. If $c$ is a function from $V(G)$ to $M_n$, where $M_n$ is $\{\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k$, and $\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k+1$, then $c$ a signed tree-$n$-coloring of $(G,σ)$. The minimum integer $n$ such that $(G,σ)$ admits a signed tree-$n$-coloring is the signed vertex arboricity of $(G,σ)$, denoted by $va(G,σ)$. In this paper, we first show that two switching equivalent signed graphs have the same signed vertex arboricity, and then prove that $va(G,σ)\leq 3$ for every balanced signed triangulation and for every edge-maximal $K_5$-minor-free graph with balanced signature. This generalizes the well-known result that the vertex arboricity of every planar graph is at most 3.

Characterization on Practical Photon Counting Receiver in Optical Scattering Communication

We characterize the practical photon-counting receiver in optical scattering communication with finite sampling rate and electrical noise. In the receiver side, the detected signal can be characterized as a series of pulses generated by photon-multiplier (PMT) detector and held by the pulse-holding circuits, which are then sampled by the analog-to-digit convertor (ADC) with finite sampling rate and counted by a rising-edge pulse detector. However, the finite small pulse width incurs the dead time effect that may lead to sub-Poisson distribution on the recorded pulses. We analyze first-order and second-order moments on the number of recorded pulses with finite sampling rate at the receiver side under two cases where the sampling period is shorter than or equal to the pulse width as well as longer than the pulse width. Moreover, we adopt the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. In order to simplify the analysis, we adopt binomial distribution approximation on the number of recorded pulses in each slot. A tractable holding time and decision threshold selection rule is provided aiming to maximize the minimal Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance between the two distributions. The performance of proposed sub-Poisson distribution and the binomial approximation are verified by the experimental results. The equivalent arrival rate and holding time predicted by the of sub-Poisson model and the associated proposed binomial distribution on finite sampling rate and the electrical noise are validated by the simulation results. The proposed the holding time and decision threshold selection rule performs close to the optimal one.

Joint Transceiver and Offset Design for Visible Light Communications with Input-dependent Shot Noise

In this paper, we investigate the problem of the joint transceiver and offset design (JTOD) for point-to-point multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and multiple user multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) visible light communication (VLC) systems. Both uplink and downlink multi-user scenarios are considered. The shot noise induced by the incoming signals is considered, leading to a more realistic MIMO VLC channel model. Under key lighting constraints, we formulate non-convex optimization problems aiming at minimizing the sum mean squared error. To optimize the transceiver and the offset jointly, a gradient projection based procedure is resorted to. When only imperfect channel state information is available, a semidefinite programming (SDP) based scheme is proposed to obtain robust transceiver and offset. The proposed method is shown to non-trivially outperform the conventional scaled zero forcing (ZF) and singular value decomposition (SVD) based equalization methods. The robust scheme works particularly well when the signal is much stronger than the noise.

Signal Detection under Short-Interval Sampling of Continuous Waveforms for Optical Wireless Scattering Communication

In optical wireless scattering communication, received signal in each symbol interval is captured by a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and then sampled through very short but finite interval sampling. The resulting samples form a signal vector for symbol detection. The upper and lower bounds on transmission rate of such a processing system are studied. It is shown that the gap between two bounds approaches zero as the thermal noise and shot noise variances approach zero. The maximum a posteriori (MAP) signal detection is performed and a low computational complexity receiver is derived under piecewise polynomial approximation. Meanwhile, the threshold based signal detection is also studied, where two threshold selection rules are proposed based on the detection error probability and the Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance. For the latter, it is shown that the KL distance is not sensitive to the threshold selection for small shot and thermal noise variances, and thus the threshold can be selected among a wide range without significant loss from the optimal KL distance. The performances of the transmission rate bounds, the signal detection, and the threshold selection approaches are evaluated by the numerical results.

To design an efficient interference management and multiple access scheme for visible light communication (VLC) network, this letter leverages the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), which has received significant attention in the $5^{th}$ generation wireless communication. With the residual interference from the successive interference cancellation in NOMA taken into account, we optimize the power allocation for NOMA VLC network to improve the achievable user rate under user quality of service (QoS) constraint. The performance of the proposed approaches is evaluated by the numerical results.

Ensemble Enabled Weighted PageRank

This paper describes our solution for WSDM Cup 2016. Ranking the query independent importance of scholarly articles is a critical and challenging task, due to the heterogeneity and dynamism of entities involved. Our approach is called Ensemble enabled Weighted PageRank (EWPR). To do this, we first propose Time-Weighted PageRank that extends PageRank by introducing a time decaying factor. We then develop an ensemble method to assemble the authorities of the heterogeneous entities involved in scholarly articles. We finally propose to use external data sources to further improve the ranking accuracy. Our experimental study shows that our EWPR is a good choice for ranking scholarly articles.

From DC-Biased to DC-Informative Optical OFDM

We propose a novel modulation scheme for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) based optical communication system employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). This method utilizes the DC-bias, which typically is discarded at the receiver-end, to carry information to achieve higher power efficiency. By formulating and solving a convex optimization problem, a constellation in high dimensional space is designed offline for the input of the transmitter-side inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block. We point out that one can choose partial or full DC power for information transmission. Under the condition that the spectrum efficiency is fixed and attainable, this method bears notable power gain over traditional DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM).

Constellation Design for Multi-color Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we propose a novel high dimensional constellation design scheme for visible light communication (VLC) systems employing red/green/blue light emitting diodes (RGB LEDs). It is in fact a generalized color shift keying (CSK) scheme which does not suffer efficiency loss due to a constrained sum intensity for all constellation symbols. Crucial lighting requirements are included as optimization constraints. To control non-linear distortion, the optical peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) of LEDs is individually constrained. Fixing the average optical power, our scheme is able to achieve much lower bit-error rate (BER) than conventional schems especially when illumination color is more "unbalanced". When cross-talks exist among the multiple optical channels, we apply a singular value decomposition (SVD)-based pre-equalizer and redesign the constellations, and such scheme is shown to outperform post-equalized schemes based on zero-forcing or linear minimum-mean-squared-error (LMMSE) principles. To further reduce system BER, a binary switching algorithm (BSA) is employed the first time for labeling high dimensional constellation. We thus obtains the optimal bits-to-symbols mapping.

On Finite Block-Length Quantization Distortion

We investigate the upper and lower bounds on the quantization distortions for independent and identically distributed sources in the finite block-length regime. Based on the convex optimization framework of the rate-distortion theory, we derive a lower bound on the quantization distortion under finite block-length, which is shown to be greater than the asymptotic distortion given by the rate-distortion theory. We also derive two upper bounds on the quantization distortion based on random quantization codebooks, which can achieve any distortion above the asymptotic one. Moreover, we apply the new upper and lower bounds to two types of sources, the discrete binary symmetric source and the continuous Gaussian source. For the binary symmetric source, we obtain the closed-form expressions of the upper and lower bounds. For the Gaussian source, we propose a computational tractable method to numerically compute the upper and lower bounds, for both bounded and unbounded quantization codebooks.Numerical results show that the gap between the upper and lower bounds is small for reasonable block length and hence the bounds are tight.
