Effects of 3D Position Fluctuations on Air-to-Ground mmWave UAV Communications

Millimeter wave (mmWave)-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication is a promising candidate for future communications due to its flexibility and sufficient bandwidth. However, random fluctuations in the position of hovering UAVs will lead to random variations in the blockage and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the UAV-user link, thus affecting the quality of service (QoS) of the system. To assess the impact of UAV position fluctuations on the QoS of air-to-ground mmWave UAV communications, this paper develops a tractable analytical model that jointly captures the features of three-dimensional (3D) position fluctuations of hovering UAVs and blockages of mmWave (including static, dynamic, and self-blockages). With this model, we derive the closed-form expressions for reliable service probability respective to blockage probability of UAV-user links, and coverage probability respective to SNR, respectively. The results indicate that the greater the position fluctuations of UAVs, the lower the reliable service probability and coverage probability. The degradation of these two evaluation metrics confirms that the performance of air-to-ground mmWave UAV systems largely depends on the UAV position fluctuations, and the stronger the fluctuation, the worse the QoS. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate the above results and show UAVs' optimal location to maximize the reliable service and coverage probability, respectively.

Internal symmetry of the $L_{\leqslant 3}$ algebra arising from a Lie pair

A Lie pair is an inclusion $A$ to $L$ of Lie algebroids over the same base manifold. In an earlier work, the third author with Bandiera, Stiénon, and Xu introduced a canonical $L_{\leqslant 3}$ algebra $Γ(\wedge^\bullet A^\vee \otimes L/A)$ whose unary bracket is the Chevalley-Eilenberg differential arising from every Lie pair $(L,A)$. In this note, we prove that to such a Lie pair there is an associated Lie algebra action by $\mathrm{Der}(L)$ on the $L_{\leqslant 3}$ algebra $Γ(\wedge^\bullet A^\vee \otimes L/A)$. Here $\mathrm{Der}(L)$ is the space of derivations on the Lie algebroid $L$, or infinitesimal automorphisms of $L$. The said action gives rise to a larger scope of gauge equivalences of Maurer-Cartan elements in $Γ(\wedge^\bullet A^\vee \otimes L/A)$, and for this reason we elect to call the $\mathrm{Der}(L)$-action internal symmetry of $Γ(\wedge^\bullet A^\vee \otimes L/A)$.

Joint Precoding for Active Intelligent Transmitting Surface Empowered Outdoor-to-Indoor Communication in mmWave Cellular Networks

Outdoor-to-indoor communications in millimeter-wave (mmWave) cellular networks have been one challenging research problem due to the severe attenuation and the high penetration loss caused by the propagation characteristics of mmWave signals. We propose a viable solution to implement the outdoor-to-indoor mmWave communication system with the aid of an active intelligent transmitting surface (active-ITS), where the active-ITS allows the incoming signal from an outdoor base station (BS) to pass through the surface and be received by the indoor user-equipments (UEs) after shifting its phase and magnifying its amplitude. Then, the problem of joint precoding of the BS and active-ITS is investigated to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of the communication system. An efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm is developed to solve it with the suboptimal solutions in nearly closed-forms. In addition, to reduce the size and hardware cost of an active-ITS, we provide a block-amplifying architecture to partially remove the circuit components for power-amplifying, where multiple transmissive-type elements (TEs) in each block share a same power amplifier. Simulations indicate that active-ITS has the potential of achieving a given performance with much fewer TEs compared to the passive-ITS under the same total system power consumption, which makes it suitable for application to the size-limited and aesthetic-needed scenario, and the inevitable performance degradation caused by the block-amplifying architecture is acceptable.

Characterizing Visualization Insights through Entity-Based Interaction: An Exploratory Study

One of the primary purposes of visualization is to assist users in discovering insights. While there has been much research in information visualization aiming at complex data transformation and novel presentation techniques, relatively little has been done to understand how users derive insights through interactive visualization of data. This paper presents a crowdsourced study with 158 participants investigating the relation between entity-based interaction (an action + its target entity) and the resulting insight. To this end, we generalized the interaction with an existing CO2 Explorer as entity-based interaction and enabled users to input notes and refer to relevant entities to assist their narratives. We logged interactions of users freely exploring the visualization and characterized their externalized insights about the data. Using entity-based interactions and references to infer insight characteristics (category, overview versus detail, and prior knowledge), we found evidence that compared with interactions, entity references improved insight characterization from slight/fair to fair/moderate agreements. To interpret prediction outcomes, feature importance and correlation analysis indicated that, e.g., detailed insights tended to have more mouse-overs in the chart area and cite the vertical reference lines in the line chart as evidence. We discuss study limitations and implications on knowledge-assisted visualization, e.g., insight recommendations based on user exploration.

Robust Joint Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces Assisted Cell-Free Networks

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) have emerged as a promising economical solution to implement cell-free networks. However, the performance gains achieved by IRSs critically depend on smartly tuned passive beamforming based on the assumption that the accurate channel state information (CSI) knowledge is available, which is practically impossible. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the impact of the CSI uncertainty on IRS-assisted cell-free networks. We adopt a stochastic programming method to cope with the CSI uncertainty by maximizing the expectation of the sum-rate, which guarantees robust performance over the average. Accordingly, an average sum-rate maximization problem is formulated, which is non-convex and arduous to obtain its optimal solution due to the coupled variables and the expectation operation with respect to CSI uncertainties. As a compromising approach, we develop an efficient robust joint design algorithm with low-complexity. Particularly, the original problem is equivalently transformed into a tractable form, and then, the locally optimal solution can be obtained by employing the block coordinate descent method. We further prove that the CSI uncertainty impacts the design of the active transmitting beamforming of APs, but surprisingly does not directly impact the design of the passive reflecting beamforming of IRSs. It is worth noting that the investigated scenario is flexible and general, and thus the proposed algorithm can act as a general framework to solve various sum-rate maximization problems. Simulation results demonstrate that IRSs can achieve considerable data rate improvement for conventional cell-free networks, and confirm the resilience of the proposed algorithm against the CSI uncertainty.

Interactive Visual Facets to Support Fluid Exploratory Search

Exploratory search starts with ill-defined goals and involves browsing, learning, and formulating new targets for search. To fluidly support such dynamic search behaviours, we focus on devising interactive visual facets (IVF), visualising information facets to support user comprehension and control of the information space. To do this, we reviewed existing faceted search interfaces and derived two design requirements (DR) that have not been fully addressed to support fluid interactions in exploratory search. We then exemplified the requirements through devising an IVF tool, which coordinates a linear and a categorical facet representing the distribution and summarisation of items, respectively, and providing context for faceted exploration (DR1). To support rapid transitions between search criteria (DR2), the tool introduces a novel design concept of using facets to select items without filtering the item space. Particularly, we propose a filter-swipe technique that enables users to drag a categorical facet value sequentially over linear facet bars to view the items in the intersection of the two facets along with the categorical facet dynamically summarizing the items in the interaction. Three applications demonstrate how the features support information discovery with ease. A user study of 11 participants with realistic email search tasks shows that dynamic suggestions through the timeline navigation can help discover useful suggestions for search; the novel design concept was favoured over using facet values as filters. Based on these practices, we derive IVF design implications for fluid, exploratory searches.

Multiple Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces Assisted Cell-Free MIMO Communications

In this paper, we investigate an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted cell-free multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication system, where distributed multiple IRSs are dedicated deployed to assist distributed multiple base stations (BSs) for cooperative transmission. Our objective is to maximize the achievable sum-rate of the cell-free system by jointly optimizing the active transmit beamforming matrices at BSs and the passive reflecting beamforming matrices at IRSs, while the constraints on the maximum transmit power of each BS and the phase shift of each IRS element are satisfied. We propose an efficient framework to jointly design the BSs, the IRSs, and the user equipment (UEs). As a compromise approach, we first transform the non-convex problem into an equivalent form based on the fractional programming methods and then decompose the reformulated problem into two subproblems and solve them alternately. Particularly, we propose a Lagrangian dual sub-gradient based algorithm to solve the subproblem of optimizing the active transmit beamforming with nearly closed-form solutions. We reformulate the subproblem of optimizing the passive reflecting beamforming as a constant modulus constrained quadratic programming (CMC-QP) problem. We first provide two feasible solutions by proposing a pair of relaxation-based algorithms. We also develop a low-complexity alternating sequential optimization (ASO) algorithm to obtain closed-form solutions. All three algorithms are guaranteed to converge to locally optimal solutions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve considerable performance improvements compared with the benchmark schemes.

A Joint Power Splitting, Active and Passive Beamforming Optimization Framework for IRS Assisted MIMO SWIPT System

This paper considers an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-input multi-output (MIMO) power splitting (PS) based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system with multiple PS receivers (PSRs). The objective is to maximize the achievable data rate of the system by jointly optimizing the PS ratios at the PSRs, the active transmit beamforming (ATB) at the access point (AP), and the passive reflective beamforming (PRB) at the IRS, while the constraints on maximum transmission power at the AP, the reflective phase shift of each element at the IRS, the individual minimum harvested energy requirement of each PSR, and the domain of PS ratio of each PSR are all satisfied. For this unsolved problem, however, since the optimization variables are intricately coupled and the constraints are conflicting, the formulated problem is non-convex, and cannot be addressed by employing exist approaches directly. To this end, we propose a joint optimization framework to solve this problem. Particularly, we reformulate it as an equivalent form by employing the Lagrangian dual transform and the fractional programming transform, and decompose the transformed problem into several sub-problems. Then, we propose an alternate optimization algorithm by capitalizing on the dual sub-gradient method, the successive convex approximation method, and the penalty-based majorization-minimization approach, to solve the sub-problems iteratively, and obtain the optimal solutions in nearly closed-forms. Numerical simulation results verify the effectiveness of the IRS in SWIPT system and indicate that the proposed algorithm offers a substantial performance gain.

A Low Complexity Quantum Principal Component Analysis Algorithm

In this paper, we propose a low complexity quantum principal component analysis (qPCA) algorithm. Similar to the state-of-the-art qPCA, it achieves dimension reduction by extracting principal components of the data matrix, rather than all components of the data matrix, to quantum registers, so that samples of measurement required can be reduced considerably. However, the major advantage of our qPCA over the state-of-the-art qPCA is that it requires much less quantum gates. In addition, it is more accurate due to the simplification of the quantum circuit. We implement the proposed qPCA on the IBM quantum computing platform, and the experimental results are consistent with our expectations.

Characterizing the Quality of Insight by Interactions: A Case Study

Understanding the quality of insight has become increasingly important with the trend of allowing users to post comments during visual exploration, yet approaches for qualifying insight are rare. This paper presents a case study to investigate the possibility of characterizing the quality of insight via the interactions performed. To do this, we devised the interaction of a visualization tool-MediSyn-for insight generation. MediSyn supports five types of interactions: selecting, connecting, elaborating, exploring, and sharing. We evaluated MediSyn with 14 participants by allowing them to freely explore the data and generate insights. We then extracted seven interaction patterns from their interaction logs and correlated the patterns to four aspects of insight quality. The results show the possibility of qualifying insights via interactions. Among other findings, exploration actions can lead to unexpected insights; the drill-down pattern tends to increase the domain values of insights. A qualitative analysis shows that using domain knowledge to guide exploration can positively affect the domain value of derived insights. We discuss the study's implications, lessons learned, and future research opportunities.

Localization of certain odd-dimensional manifolds with torus actions

Let a torus $T$ act smoothly on a compact smooth manifold $M$. If the rational equivariant cohomology $H^*_T(M)$ is a free $H^*_T(pt)$-module, then according to the Chang-Skjelbred Lemma, it can be determined by the $1$-skeleton consisting of the $T$-fixed points and $1$-dimensional $T$-orbits of $M$. When $M$ is an even-dimensional, orientable manifold with 2-dimensional 1-skeleton, Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson gave a graphic description of the equivariant cohomology. In this paper, first we revisit the even-dimensional GKM theory and introduce a notion of GKM covering, then we consider the case when $M$ is an odd-dimensional, possibly non-orientable manifold with $3$-dimensional $1$-skeleton, and give a graphic description of its equivariant cohomology.

A Deep Learning Based Attack for The Chaos-based Image Encryption

In this letter, as a proof of concept, we propose a deep learning-based approach to attack the chaos-based image encryption algorithm in \cite{guan2005chaos}. The proposed method first projects the chaos-based encrypted images into the low-dimensional feature space, where essential information of plain images has been largely preserved. With the low-dimensional features, a deconvolutional generator is utilized to regenerate perceptually similar decrypted images to approximate the plain images in the high-dimensional space. Compared with conventional image encryption attack algorithms, the proposed method does not require to manually analyze and infer keys in a time-consuming way. Instead, we directly attack the chaos-based encryption algorithms in a key-independent manner. Moreover, the proposed method can be trained end-to-end. Given the chaos-based encrypted images, a well-trained decryption model is able to automatically reconstruct plain images with high fidelity. In the experiments, we successfully attack the chaos-based algorithm \cite{guan2005chaos} and the decrypted images are visually similar to their ground truth plain images. Experimental results on both static-key and dynamic-key scenarios verify the efficacy of the proposed method.

Localization of equivariant cohomology rings of real Grassmannians

We use localization method to understand the rational equivariant cohomology rings of real Grassmannians and oriented Grassmannians, then relate this to the Leray-Borel description which says the ring generators are equivariant Pontryagin classes, Euler classes in even dimension, and one more new type of classes in odd dimension, as stated by Casian and Kodama. We give additive basis in terms of equivariant characteristic polynomials and equivariant Schubert/canonical classes. We also calculate Poincaré series, equivariant Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and equivariant characteristic numbers. Since all these Grassmannians with torus actions are equivariantly formal, many results for equivariant cohomology have similar statements for ordinary cohomology.

Classification and equivariant cohomology of circle actions on 3d manifolds

The classification of Seifert manifolds was given in terms of numeric data by Seifert in 1933, and then generalized by Orlik and Raymond in 1968 to circle actions on closed 3d manifolds. In this paper, we further generalize the classification to circle actions on 3d manifolds with boundaries by adding a numeric parameter and a union of cycle graphs. Then we describe the equivariant cohomology of 3d manifolds with circle actions in terms of ring, module and vector-space structures. We also compute equivariant Betti numbers and Poincaré series for these manifolds and discuss the equivariant formality

Compensated isocurvature perturbations in the curvaton model

Primordial fluctuations in the relative number densities of particles, or isocurvature perturbations, are generally well constrained by cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. A less probed mode is the compensated isocurvature perturbation (CIP), a fluctuation in the relative number densities of cold dark matter and baryons. In the curvaton model, a subdominant field during inflation later sets the primordial curvature fluctuation $ζ$. In some curvaton-decay scenarios, the baryon and cold dark matter isocurvature fluctuations nearly cancel, leaving a large CIP correlated with $ζ$. This correlation can be used to probe these CIPs more sensitively than the uncorrelated CIPs considered in past work, essentially by measuring the squeezed bispectrum of the CMB for triangles whose shortest side is limited by the sound horizon. Here, the sensitivity of existing and future CMB experiments to correlated CIPs is assessed, with an eye towards testing specific curvaton-decay scenarios. The planned CMB Stage 4 experiment could detect the largest CIPs attainable in curvaton scenarios with more than 3$σ$ significance. The significance could improve if small-scale CMB polarization foregrounds can be effectively subtracted. As a result, future CMB observations could discriminate between some curvaton-decay scenarios in which baryon number and dark matter are produced during different epochs relative to curvaton decay. Independent of the specific motivation for the origin of a correlated CIP perturbation, cross-correlation of CIP reconstructions with the primary CMB can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of a CIP detection. For fully correlated CIPs the improvement is a factor of $\sim$2$-$3.
