A regularization-patching dual quaternion optimization method for solving the hand-eye calibration problem

The hand-eye calibration problem is an important application problem in robot research. Based on the 2-norm of dual quaternion vectors, we propose a new dual quaternion optimization method for the hand-eye calibration problem. The dual quaternion optimization problem is decomposed to two quaternion optimization subproblems. The first quaternion optimization subproblem governs the rotation of the robot hand. It can be solved efficiently by the eigenvalue decomposition or singular value decomposition. If the optimal value of the first quaternion optimization subproblem is zero, then the system is rotationwise noiseless, i.e., there exists a ``perfect'' robot hand motion which meets all the testing poses rotationwise exactly. In this case, we apply the regularization technique for solving the second subproblem to minimize the distance of the translation. Otherwise we apply the patching technique to solve the second quaternion optimization subproblem. Then solving the second quaternion optimization subproblem turns out to be solving a quadratically constrained quadratic program. In this way, we give a complete description for the solution set of hand-eye calibration problems. This is new in the hand-eye calibration literature. The numerical results are also presented to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

"Sparse + Low-Rank'' Tensor Completion Approach for Recovering Images and Videos

Recovering color images and videos from highly undersampled data is a fundamental and challenging task in face recognition and computer vision. By the multi-dimensional nature of color images and videos, in this paper, we propose a novel tensor completion approach, which is able to efficiently explore the sparsity of tensor data under the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Specifically, we introduce two ``sparse + low-rank'' tensor completion models as well as two implementable algorithms for finding their solutions. The first one is a DCT-based sparse plus weighted nuclear norm induced low-rank minimization model. The second one is a DCT-based sparse plus $p$-shrinking mapping induced low-rank optimization model. Moreover, we accordingly propose two implementable augmented Lagrangian-based algorithms for solving the underlying optimization models. A series of numerical experiments including color image inpainting and video data recovery demonstrate that our proposed approach performs better than many existing state-of-the-art tensor completion methods, especially for the case when the ratio of missing data is high.

Source Localization of Graph Diffusion via Variational Autoencoders for Graph Inverse Problems

Graph diffusion problems such as the propagation of rumors, computer viruses, or smart grid failures are ubiquitous and societal. Hence it is usually crucial to identify diffusion sources according to the current graph diffusion observations. Despite its tremendous necessity and significance in practice, source localization, as the inverse problem of graph diffusion, is extremely challenging as it is ill-posed: different sources may lead to the same graph diffusion patterns. Different from most traditional source localization methods, this paper focuses on a probabilistic manner to account for the uncertainty of different candidate sources. Such endeavors require overcoming challenges including 1) the uncertainty in graph diffusion source localization is hard to be quantified; 2) the complex patterns of the graph diffusion sources are difficult to be probabilistically characterized; 3) the generalization under any underlying diffusion patterns is hard to be imposed. To solve the above challenges, this paper presents a generic framework: Source Localization Variational AutoEncoder (SL-VAE) for locating the diffusion sources under arbitrary diffusion patterns. Particularly, we propose a probabilistic model that leverages the forward diffusion estimation model along with deep generative models to approximate the diffusion source distribution for quantifying the uncertainty. SL-VAE further utilizes prior knowledge of the source-observation pairs to characterize the complex patterns of diffusion sources by a learned generative prior. Lastly, a unified objective that integrates the forward diffusion estimation model is derived to enforce the model to generalize under arbitrary diffusion patterns. Extensive experiments are conducted on 7 real-world datasets to demonstrate the superiority of SL-VAE in reconstructing the diffusion sources by excelling other methods on average 20% in AUC score.

Low Rank Approximation of Dual Complex Matrices

Dual complex numbers can represent rigid body motion in 2D spaces. Dual complex matrices are linked with screw theory, and have potential applications in various areas. In this paper, we study low rank approximation of dual complex matrices. We define $2$-norm for dual complex vectors, and Frobenius norm for dual complex matrices. These norms are nonnegative dual numbers. We establish the unitary invariance property of dual complex matrices. We study eigenvalues of square dual complex matrices, and show that an $n \times n$ dual complex Hermitian matrix has exactly $n$ eigenvalues, which are dual numbers. We present a singular value decomposition (SVD) theorem for dual complex matrices, define ranks and appreciable ranks for dual complex matrices, and study their properties. We establish an Eckart-Young like theorem for dual complex matrices, and present an algorithm framework for low rank approximation of dual complex matrices via truncated SVD. The SVD of dual complex matrices also provides a basic tool for Principal Component Analysis (PCA) via these matrices. Numerical experiments are reported.

"Learn the Facts About COVID-19": Analyzing the Use of Warning Labels on TikTok Videos

During the COVID-19 pandemic, health-related misinformation and harmful content shared online had a significant adverse effect on society. To mitigate this adverse effect, mainstream social media platforms employed soft moderation interventions (i.e., warning labels) on potentially harmful posts. Despite the recent popularity of these moderation interventions, we lack empirical analyses aiming to uncover how these warning labels are used in the wild, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. In this work, we analyze the use of warning labels on TikTok, focusing on COVID-19 videos. First, we construct a set of 26 COVID-19 related hashtags, then we collect 41K videos that include those hashtags in their description. Second, we perform a quantitative analysis on the entire dataset to understand the use of warning labels on TikTok. Then, we perform an in-depth qualitative study, using thematic analysis, on 222 COVID-19 related videos to assess the content and the connection between the content and the warning labels. Our analysis shows that TikTok broadly applies warning labels on TikTok videos, likely based on hashtags included in the description. More worrying is the addition of COVID-19 warning labels on videos where their actual content is not related to COVID-19 (23% of the cases in a sample of 143 English videos that are not related to COVID-19). Finally, our qualitative analysis on a sample of 222 videos shows that 7.7% of the videos share misinformation/harmful content and do not include warning labels, 37.3% share benign information and include warning labels, and that 35% of the videos that share misinformation/harmful content (and need a warning label) are made for fun. Our study demonstrates the need to develop more accurate and precise soft moderation systems, especially on a platform like TikTok that is extremely popular among people of younger age.

Dual Quaternions and Dual Quaternion Vectors

We introduce a total order and the absolute value function for dual numbers. The absolute value function of dual numbers are with dual number values, and have properties similar to the properties of the absolute value function of real numbers. We define the magnitude of a dual quaternion, as a dual number. Based upon these, we extended $1$-norm, $\infty$-norm and $2$-norm to dual quaternion vectors.

Slapping Cats, Bopping Heads, and Oreo Shakes: Understanding Indicators of Virality in TikTok Short Videos

Short videos have become one of the leading media used by younger generations to express themselves online and thus a driving force in shaping online culture. In this context, TikTok has emerged as a platform where viral videos are often posted first. In this paper, we study what elements of short videos posted on TikTok contribute to their virality. We apply a mixed-method approach to develop a codebook and identify important virality features. We do so vis-à-vis three research hypotheses; namely, that: 1) the video content, 2) TikTok's recommendation algorithm, and 3) the popularity of the video creator contribute to virality. We collect and label a dataset of 400 TikTok videos and train classifiers to help us identify the features that influence virality the most. While the number of followers is the most powerful predictor, close-up and medium-shot scales also play an essential role. So does the lifespan of the video, the presence of text, and the point of view. Our research highlights the characteristics that distinguish viral from non-viral TikTok videos, laying the groundwork for developing additional approaches to create more engaging online content and proactively identify possibly risky content that is likely to reach a large audience.

An Orthogonal Equivalence Theorem for Third Order Tensors

In 2011, Kilmer and Martin proposed tensor singular value decomposition (T-SVD) for third order tensors. Since then, T-SVD has applications in low rank tensor approximation, tensor recovery, multi-view clustering, multi-view feature extraction, tensor sketching, etc. By going through the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), matrix SVD and inverse DFT, a third order tensor is mapped to an f-diagonal third order tensor. We call this a Kilmer-Martin mapping. We show that the Kilmer-Martin mapping of a third order tensor is invariant if that third order tensor is taking T-product with some orthogonal tensors. We define singular values and T-rank of that third order tensor based upon its Kilmer-Martin mapping. Thus, tensor tubal rank, T-rank, singular values and T-singular values of a third order tensor are invariant when it is taking T-product with some orthogonal tensors. Some properties of singular values, T-rank and best T-rank one approximation are discussed.

ST-SVD Factorization and s-Diagonal Tensors

A third order real tensor is mapped to a special f-diagonal tensor by going through Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), standard matrix SVD and inverse DFT. We call such an f-diagonal tensor an s-diagonal tensor. An f-diagonal tensor is an s-diagonal tensor if and only if it is mapped to itself in the above process. The third order tensor space is partitioned to orthogonal equivalence classes. Each orthogonal equivalence class has a unique s-diagonal tensor. Two s-diagonal tensors are equal if they are orthogonally equivalent. Third order tensors in an orthogonal equivalence class have the same tensor tubal rank and T-singular values. Four meaningful necessary conditions for s-diagonal tensors are presented. Then we present a set of sufficient and necessary conditions for s-diagonal tensors. Such conditions involve a special complex number. In the cases that the dimension of the third mode of the considered tensor is $2, 3$ and $4$, we present direct sufficient and necessary conditions which do not involve such a complex number.

Low-Rank and Sparse Enhanced Tucker Decomposition for Tensor Completion

Tensor completion refers to the task of estimating the missing data from an incomplete measurement or observation, which is a core problem frequently arising from the areas of big data analysis, computer vision, and network engineering. Due to the multidimensional nature of high-order tensors, the matrix approaches, e.g., matrix factorization and direct matricization of tensors, are often not ideal for tensor completion and recovery. In this paper, we introduce a unified low-rank and sparse enhanced Tucker decomposition model for tensor completion. Our model possesses a sparse regularization term to promote a sparse core tensor of the Tucker decomposition, which is beneficial for tensor data compression. Moreover, we enforce low-rank regularization terms on factor matrices of the Tucker decomposition for inducing the low-rankness of the tensor with a cheap computational cost. Numerically, we propose a customized ADMM with enough easy subproblems to solve the underlying model. It is remarkable that our model is able to deal with different types of real-world data sets, since it exploits the potential periodicity and inherent correlation properties appeared in tensors. A series of computational experiments on real-world data sets, including internet traffic data sets, color images, and face recognition, demonstrate that our model performs better than many existing state-of-the-art matricization and tensorization approaches in terms of achieving higher recovery accuracy.

"Go eat a bat, Chang!": On the Emergence of Sinophobic Behavior on Web Communities in the Face of COVID-19

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in unprecedented ways. In the face of the projected catastrophic consequences, many countries have enacted social distancing measures in an attempt to limit the spread of the virus. Under these conditions, the Web has become an indispensable medium for information acquisition, communication, and entertainment. At the same time, unfortunately, the Web is being exploited for the dissemination of potentially harmful and disturbing content, such as the spread of conspiracy theories and hateful speech towards specific ethnic groups, in particular towards Chinese people since COVID-19 is believed to have originated from China. In this paper, we make a first attempt to study the emergence of Sinophobic behavior on the Web during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We collect two large-scale datasets from Twitter and 4chan's Politically Incorrect board (/pol/) over a time period of approximately five months and analyze them to investigate whether there is a rise or important differences with regard to the dissemination of Sinophobic content. We find that COVID-19 indeed drives the rise of Sinophobia on the Web and that the dissemination of Sinophobic content is a cross-platform phenomenon: it exists on fringe Web communities like \dspol, and to a lesser extent on mainstream ones like Twitter. Also, using word embeddings over time, we characterize the evolution and emergence of new Sinophobic slurs on both Twitter and /pol/. Finally, we find interesting differences in the context in which words related to Chinese people are used on the Web before and after the COVID-19 outbreak: on Twitter we observe a shift towards blaming China for the situation, while on /pol/ we find a shift towards using more (and new) Sinophobic slurs.

Dissecting the Meme Magic: Understanding Indicators of Virality in Image Memes

Despite the increasingly important role played by image memes, we do not yet have a solid understanding of the elements that might make a meme go viral on social media. In this paper, we investigate what visual elements distinguish image memes that are highly viral on social media from those that do not get re-shared, across three dimensions: composition, subjects, and target audience. Drawing from research in art theory, psychology, marketing, and neuroscience, we develop a codebook to characterize image memes, and use it to annotate a set of 100 image memes collected from 4chan's Politically Incorrect Board (/pol/). On the one hand, we find that highly viral memes are more likely to use a close-up scale, contain characters, and include positive or negative emotions. On the other hand, image memes that do not present a clear subject the viewer can focus attention on, or that include long text are not likely to be re-shared by users. We train machine learning models to distinguish between image memes that are likely to go viral and those that are unlikely to be re-shared, obtaining an AUC of 0.866 on our dataset. We also show that the indicators of virality identified by our model can help characterize the most viral memes posted on mainstream online social networks too, as our classifiers are able to predict 19 out of the 20 most popular image memes posted on Twitter and Reddit between 2016 and 2018. Overall, our analysis sheds light on what indicators characterize viral and non-viral visual content online, and set the basis for developing better techniques to create or moderate content that is more likely to catch the viewer's attention.

A First Look at Zoombombing

Online meeting tools like Zoom and Google Meet have become central to our professional, educational, and personal lives. This has opened up new opportunities for large scale harassment. In particular, a phenomenon known as zoombombing has emerged, in which aggressors join online meetings with the goal of disrupting them and harassing their participants. In this paper, we conduct the first data-driven analysis of calls for zoombombing attacks on social media. We identify ten popular online meeting tools and extract posts containing meeting invitations to these platforms on a mainstream social network, Twitter, and on a fringe community known for organizing coordinated attacks against online users, 4chan. We then perform manual annotation to identify posts that are calling for zoombombing attacks, and apply thematic analysis to develop a codebook to better characterize the discussion surrounding calls for zoombombing. During the first seven months of 2020, we identify over 200 calls for zoombombing between Twitter and 4chan, and analyze these calls both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our findings indicate that the vast majority of calls for zoombombing are not made by attackers stumbling upon meeting invitations or bruteforcing their meeting ID, but rather by insiders who have legitimate access to these meetings, particularly students in high school and college classes. This has important security implications, because it makes common protections against zoombombing, such as password protection, ineffective. We also find instances of insiders instructing attackers to adopt the names of legitimate participants in the class to avoid detection, making countermeasures like setting up a waiting room and vetting participants less effective. Based on these observations, we argue that the only effective defense against zoombombing is creating unique join links for each participant.

A Parallelizable Method for Missing Internet Traffic Tensor Data

Recovery of internet network traffic data from incomplete observed data is an important issue in internet network engineering and management. In this paper, by fully combining the temporal stability and periodicity features in internet traffic data, a new separable optimization model for internet data recovery is proposed, which is based upon the t-product and the rapid discrete Fourier transform of tensors. Moreover, by using generalized inverse matrices, an easy-to-operate and effective algorithm is proposed. In theory, we prove that under suitable conditions, every accumulation point of the sequence generated by the proposed algorithm is a stationary point of the established model. Numerical simulation results carried on the widely used real-world internet network datasets, show good performance of the proposed method. In the case of moderate sampling rates, the proposed method works very well, its effect is better than that of some existing internet traffic data recovery methods in the literature. The separable structural features presented in the optimization model provide the possibility to design more efficient parallel algorithms.

SocialGrid: A TCN-enhanced Method for Online Discussion Forecasting

As a means of modern communication tools, online discussion forums have become an increasingly popular platform that allows asynchronous online interactions. People share thoughts and opinions through posting threads and replies, which form a unique communication structure between main threads and associated replies. It is significant to understand the information diffusion pattern under such a communication structure, where an essential task is to predict the arrival time of future events. In this work, we proposed a novel yet simple framework, called SocialGrid, for modeling events in online discussing forms. Our framework first transforms the entire event space into a grid representation by grouping successive evens in one time interval of a particular length. Based on the nature of the grid, we leverage the Temporal Convolution Network to learn the dynamics at the grid level. Varying the temporal scope of an individual grid, the learned grid model can be used to predict the arrival time of future events at different granularities. Leveraging the Reddit data, we validate the proposed method through experiments on a series of applications. Extensive experiments and a real-world application. Results have shown that our framework excels at various cascade prediction tasks comparing with other approaches.

NesTPP: Modeling Thread Dynamics in Online Discussion Forums

Online discussion forum creates an asynchronous conversation environment for online users to exchange ideas and share opinions through a unique thread-reply communication mode. Accurately modeling information dynamics under such a mode is important, as it provides a means of mining latent spread patterns and understanding user behaviors. In this paper, we design a novel temporal point process model to characterize information cascades in online discussion forums. The proposed model views the entire event space as a nested structure composed of main thread streams and their linked reply streams, and it explicitly models the correlations between these two types of streams through their intensity functions. Leveraging the Reddit data, we examine the performance of the designed model in different applications and compare it with other popular methods. The experimental results have shown that our model can produce competitive results, and it outperforms state-of-the-art methods in most cases.

A nonnegativity preserving algorithm for multilinear systems with nonsingular M-tensors

This paper addresses multilinear systems of equations which arise in various applications such as data mining and numerical partial differential equations. When the multilinear system under consideration involves a nonsingular $\mathcal{M}$-tensor and a nonnegative right-hand side vector, it may have multiple nonnegative solutions. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which can always preserve the nonnegativity of solutions. Theoretically, we show that the sequence generated by the proposed algorithm is a nonnegative decreasing sequence and converges to a nonnegative solution of the system. Numerical results further support the novelty of the proposed method. Particularly, when some elements of the right-hand side vector are zeros, the proposed algorithm works well while existing state-of-the-art solvers may not produce a nonnegative solution.

Properties of the solution set of generalized polynomial complementarity problems

In this paper, we consider the {\it generalized polynomial complementarity problem} (GPCP), which covers the recently introduced {\it polynomial complementarity problem} (PCP) and the well studied {\it tensor complementarity problem} (TCP) as special cases. By exploiting the structure of tensors, we first show that the solution set of GPCPs is nonempty and compact when a pair of leading tensors is cone {\bf ER}. Then, we study some topological properties of the solution set of GPCPs under the condition that the leading tensor pair is cone ${\bf R}_0$. Finally, we study a notable global Lipschitzian error bound of the solution set of GPCPs, which is better than the results obtained in the current PCPs and TCPs literature. Moreover, such an error bound is potentially helpful for finding and analyzing numerical solutions to the problem under consideration.
