Off-Policy Evaluation with Online Adaptation for Robot Exploration in Challenging Environments

Autonomous exploration has many important applications. However, classic information gain-based or frontier-based exploration only relies on the robot current state to determine the immediate exploration goal, which lacks the capability of predicting the value of future states and thus leads to inefficient exploration decisions. This paper presents a method to learn how "good" states are, measured by the state value function, to provide a guidance for robot exploration in real-world challenging environments. We formulate our work as an off-policy evaluation (OPE) problem for robot exploration (OPERE). It consists of offline Monte-Carlo training on real-world data and performs Temporal Difference (TD) online adaptation to optimize the trained value estimator. We also design an intrinsic reward function based on sensor information coverage to enable the robot to gain more information with sparse extrinsic rewards. Results show that our method enables the robot to predict the value of future states so as to better guide robot exploration. The proposed algorithm achieves better prediction and exploration performance compared with the state-of-the-arts. To the best of our knowledge, this work for the first time demonstrates value function prediction on real-world dataset for robot exploration in challenging subterranean and urban environments. iPlanner: Imperative Path Planning

The problem of path planning has been studied for years. Classic planning pipelines, including perception, mapping, and path searching, can result in latency and compounding errors between modules. While recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of end-to-end learning methods in achieving high planning efficiency, these methods often struggle to match the generalization abilities of classic approaches in handling different environments. Moreover, end-to-end training of policies often requires a large number of labeled data or training iterations to reach convergence. In this paper, we present a novel Imperative Learning (IL) approach. This approach leverages a differentiable cost map to provide implicit supervision during policy training, eliminating the need for demonstrations or labeled trajectories. Furthermore, the policy training adopts a Bi-Level Optimization (BLO) process, which combines network update and metric-based trajectory optimization, to generate a smooth and collision-free path toward the goal based on a single depth measurement. The proposed method allows task-level costs of predicted trajectories to be backpropagated through all components to update the network through direct gradient descent. In our experiments, the method demonstrates around 4x faster planning than the classic approach and robustness against localization noise. Additionally, the IL approach enables the planner to generalize to various unseen environments, resulting in an overall 26-87% improvement in SPL performance compared to baseline learning methods.

Updated Inventory of Carbon Monoxide in The Taurus Molecular Cloud

The most extensive survey of carbon monoxide (CO) gas in the Taurus molecular cloud relied on $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J=1 \rightarrow 0$ emission only, distinguishing the region where $^{12}$CO is detected without $^{13}$CO (named mask 1 region) from the one where both are detected (mask 2 region). We have taken advantage of recent $^{12}$CO $J=3\rightarrow2$ JCMT observations where they include mask 1 regions to estimate density, temperature, and $N$(CO) with a LVG model. This represents 1395 pixels out of $\sim$1.2 million in the mark 1 region. Compared to Pineda et al. (2010) results, and assuming a $T_\textrm{kin}$ of 30 K, we find a higher volume density of molecular hydrogen of 3.3$\rm \times\ 10^3$ $\textrm{cm}^{-3}$, compared to their 250-700 $\textrm{cm}^{-3}$ and a CO column density of 5.7$\rm \times\ 10^{15}\ \textrm{cm}^{-2}$, about a quarter of their value. The differences are important and show the necessity to observe several CO transitions to better describe the intermediate region between the dense cloud and the diffuse atomic medium. Future observations to extend the $^{12}$CO $J=3\rightarrow2$ mapping further away from the $^{13}$CO-detected region comprising mask 1 are needed to revisit our understanding of the diffuse portions of dark clouds.

Learned Focused Plenoptic Image Compression with Microimage Preprocessing and Global Attention

Focused plenoptic cameras can record spatial and angular information of the light field (LF) simultaneously with higher spatial resolution relative to traditional plenoptic cameras, which facilitate various applications in computer vision. However, the existing plenoptic image compression methods present ineffectiveness to the captured images due to the complex micro-textures generated by the microlens relay imaging and long-distance correlations among the microimages. In this paper, a lossy end-to-end learning architecture is proposed to compress the focused plenoptic images efficiently. First, a data preprocessing scheme is designed according to the imaging principle to remove the sub-aperture image ineffective pixels in the recorded light field and align the microimages to the rectangular grid. Then, the global attention module with large receptive field is proposed to capture the global correlation among the feature maps using pixel-wise vector attention computed in the resampling process. Also, a new image dataset consisting of 1910 focused plenoptic images with content and depth diversity is built to benefit training and testing. Extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. It outperforms intra coding of HEVC and VVC by an average of 62.57% and 51.67% bitrate reduction on the 20 preprocessed focused plenoptic images, respectively. Also, it achieves 18.73% bitrate saving and generates perceptually pleasant reconstructions compared to the state-of-the-art end-to-end image compression methods, which benefits the applications of focused plenoptic cameras greatly. The dataset and code are publicly available at https://github.com/VincentChandelier/GACN.

Improved constructions of secondary structure avoidance codes for DNA sequences

In a DNA sequence, we have the celebrated Watson-Crick complement $\overline{T}=A$, $\overline{A}=T$, $\overline{C}=G$, and $\overline{G}=C$. Given an integer $m\ge 2$, a secondary structure in a DNA sequence refers to the existence of two non-overlapping reverse complement consecutive subsequences of length $m$, denoted as $\boldsymbol{x}=(x_1, \dots, x_m)$ and $\boldsymbol{y}=(y_1, \dots, y_m)$, such that $x_i=\overline{y_{m-i+1}}$ for $1\leq i \leq m$. The property of secondary structure avoidance (SSA) forbids a sequence to contain such reverse complement subsequences, and it is a key criterion in the design of single-stranded DNA sequences for DNA computing and storage. In this paper, we improve on a recent result of Nguyen et al., by introducing explicit constructions of secondary structure avoidance codes and analyzing the capacity for any given $m$. In particular, our constructions have optimal rate 1.1679bits/nt and 1.5515bits/nt when $m=2$ and $m=3$, respectively.

Spectroscopic Evidence for Interfacial Charge Separation and Recombination in Graphene-MoS2 Vertical Heterostructures

Vertical van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures consisting of graphene (Gr) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have created a fascinating platform for exploring optical and electronic properties in the two-dimensional limit. Previous study has revealed the ultrafast formation of interfacial excitons and the exciton dynamics in the Gr/MoS2 heterostructure. However, a fully understanding of interfacial charge separation and the subsequent dynamics in graphene-based heterostructures remains elusive. Here, we investigate the carrier dynamics of Gr-MoS2 (including Gr/MoS2 and MoS2/Gr stacking sequences) heterostructures under different photoexcitation energies and stacking sequences by comprehensive ultrafast means, including time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy (TRTS), terahertz emission spectroscopy (TES) and transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). We demonstrate that the Gr/MoS2 heterostructure generates hot electron injection from graphene into the MoS2 layer with photoexcitation of sub-A-exciton of MoS2, while the interfacial charge separation in the MoS2/Gr could be partially blocked by the electric field of substrate. Charge transfer (CT) occurs in same directions for the Gr-MoS2 heterostructures with opposite stacking order, resulting in the opposite orientations of the interfacial photocurrent, as directly demonstrated by the terahertz (THz) emission. Moreover, we demonstrate that the recombination time of interfacial charges after CT is on a timescale of 18 ps to 1 ns, depending on the density of defect states in MoS2 layer. This work provides a comprehensive and unambiguous picture of the interfacial charge dynamics of graphene-based heterostructures, which is essential for developing Gr/TMDs based optoelectronic devices.

NaNu: Proposal for a Neutrino Experiment at the SPS Collider located at the North Area of CERN

Several experiments have been proposed in the recent years to study the nature of tau neutrinos, in particular aiming for a first observation of tau anti-neutrinos, more stringent upper limit on its anomalous magnetic moment as well as new constrains on the strange-quark content of the nucleon. We propose here a new low-cost neutrino experiment at the CERN North area, named NaNu (North Area NeUtrino), compatible with the realization of the future SHADOWS and HIKE experiments at the same experimental area.

On the origin of the split main sequences of the young massive cluster NGC 1856

The detection of split main sequences (MSs) associated with young clusters ($\lesssim$600 Myr) has caught lots of attention. A prevailing scenario is that a bimodality of stellar rotation distribution drives the MS bifurcation. Nevertheless, the origin of the stellar rotation dichotomy remains unclear. Hypotheses involving tidally-locked binaries or blue straggler stars (BSSs) are proposed to explain the observed split MSs. This work examines if the long-term dynamical evolution of star clusters can produce the observed split MSs, through high-performance $N$-body simulation. As a prototype example, the young massive cluster NGC 1856 exhibits an apparent MS bifurcation. Our simulation reports that at the age of NGC 1856, tidally-locked binaries are fully mixed with single stars. This is consistent with the observation that there is no significant spatial difference between blue MS and red MS stars. However, we find that only high mass-ratio binaries can evolve to the tidally-locked phase at the age of the NGC 1856. These tidally-locked binaries will populate a much redder sequence than the MS of single stars rather than a blue MS, which is inconsistent with the hypothesis. The number of tidally-locked binaries cannot account for the observation. Our simulation shows that BSSs produced by binary interactions do populate the blue periphery in the color-magnitude diagram, and their spatial distribution shows a similar pattern of single stars. However, the number of BSSs does not fit the observation.

AirLoc: Object-based Indoor Relocalization

Indoor relocalization is vital for both robotic tasks like autonomous exploration and civil applications such as navigation with a cell phone in a shopping mall. Some previous approaches adopt geometrical information such as key-point features or local textures to carry out indoor relocalization, but they either easily fail in an environment with visually similar scenes or require many database images. Inspired by the fact that humans often remember places by recognizing unique landmarks, we resort to objects, which are more informative than geometry elements. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective object-based indoor relocalization approach, dubbed AirLoc. To overcome the critical challenges of object reidentification and remembering object relationships, we extract object-wise appearance embedding and inter-object geometric relationships. The geometry and appearance features are integrated to generate cumulative scene features. This results in a robust, accurate, and portable indoor relocalization system, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in room-level relocalization by 9.5% of PR-AUC and 7% of accuracy. In addition to exhaustive evaluation, we also carry out real-world tests, where AirLoc shows robustness in challenges like severe occlusion, perceptual aliasing, viewpoint shift, and deformation.

HS-Pose: Hybrid Scope Feature Extraction for Category-level Object Pose Estimation

In this paper, we focus on the problem of category-level object pose estimation, which is challenging due to the large intra-category shape variation. 3D graph convolution (3D-GC) based methods have been widely used to extract local geometric features, but they have limitations for complex shaped objects and are sensitive to noise. Moreover, the scale and translation invariant properties of 3D-GC restrict the perception of an object's size and translation information. In this paper, we propose a simple network structure, the HS-layer, which extends 3D-GC to extract hybrid scope latent features from point cloud data for category-level object pose estimation tasks. The proposed HS-layer: 1) is able to perceive local-global geometric structure and global information, 2) is robust to noise, and 3) can encode size and translation information. Our experiments show that the simple replacement of the 3D-GC layer with the proposed HS-layer on the baseline method (GPV-Pose) achieves a significant improvement, with the performance increased by 14.5% on 5d2cm metric and 10.3% on IoU75. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin (8.3% on 5d2cm, 6.9% on IoU75) on the REAL275 dataset and runs in real-time (50 FPS).

VMesh: Hybrid Volume-Mesh Representation for Efficient View Synthesis

With the emergence of neural radiance fields (NeRFs), view synthesis quality has reached an unprecedented level. Compared to traditional mesh-based assets, this volumetric representation is more powerful in expressing scene geometry but inevitably suffers from high rendering costs and can hardly be involved in further processes like editing, posing significant difficulties in combination with the existing graphics pipeline. In this paper, we present a hybrid volume-mesh representation, VMesh, which depicts an object with a textured mesh along with an auxiliary sparse volume. VMesh retains the advantages of mesh-based assets, such as efficient rendering, compact storage, and easy editing, while also incorporating the ability to represent subtle geometric structures provided by the volumetric counterpart. VMesh can be obtained from multi-view images of an object and renders at 2K 60FPS on common consumer devices with high fidelity, unleashing new opportunities for real-time immersive applications.

PyPose: A Library for Robot Learning with Physics-based Optimization

Deep learning has had remarkable success in robotic perception, but its data-centric nature suffers when it comes to generalizing to ever-changing environments. By contrast, physics-based optimization generalizes better, but it does not perform as well in complicated tasks due to the lack of high-level semantic information and reliance on manual parametric tuning. To take advantage of these two complementary worlds, we present PyPose: a robotics-oriented, PyTorch-based library that combines deep perceptual models with physics-based optimization. PyPose's architecture is tidy and well-organized, it has an imperative style interface and is efficient and user-friendly, making it easy to integrate into real-world robotic applications. Besides, it supports parallel computing of any order gradients of Lie groups and Lie algebras and $2^{\text{nd}}$-order optimizers, such as trust region methods. Experiments show that PyPose achieves more than $10\times$ speedup in computation compared to the state-of-the-art libraries. To boost future research, we provide concrete examples for several fields of robot learning, including SLAM, planning, control, and inertial navigation.

Boundary Unlearning

The practical needs of the ``right to be forgotten'' and poisoned data removal call for efficient \textit{machine unlearning} techniques, which enable machine learning models to unlearn, or to forget a fraction of training data and its lineage. Recent studies on machine unlearning for deep neural networks (DNNs) attempt to destroy the influence of the forgetting data by scrubbing the model parameters. However, it is prohibitively expensive due to the large dimension of the parameter space. In this paper, we refocus our attention from the parameter space to the decision space of the DNN model, and propose Boundary Unlearning, a rapid yet effective way to unlearn an entire class from a trained DNN model. The key idea is to shift the decision boundary of the original DNN model to imitate the decision behavior of the model retrained from scratch. We develop two novel boundary shift methods, namely Boundary Shrink and Boundary Expanding, both of which can rapidly achieve the utility and privacy guarantees. We extensively evaluate Boundary Unlearning on CIFAR-10 and Vggface2 datasets, and the results show that Boundary Unlearning can effectively forget the forgetting class on image classification and face recognition tasks, with an expected speed-up of $17\times$ and $19\times$, respectively, compared with retraining from the scratch.

Implication of giant photon bunching on quantum phase transition in the dissipative anisotropic quantum Rabi model

We investigate the quantum phase transition in the dissipative anisotropic quantum Rabi model in the framework of quantum dressed master equation. From perspectives of both numerical and analytical analysis, we unravel the implication of the giant photon-bunching feature on the first-order quantum phase transition. The observed two-photon statistics can be well described analytically within a few lowest eigenstates at the low temperature. Moreover, such significant photon-bunching peak is generally exhibited at the deep-strong qubit-photon coupling, which is however lacking in the dissipative isotropic quantum Rabi model. Therefore, we suggest that the photon-bunching measurement is helpful to characterize the first-order QPT of the qubit-photon hybrid systems.

First sodium laser guide star asterism launching platform in China on 1.8m telescope at Gaomeigu Observatory

The application of sodium laser guide star is the key difference between modern adaptive optics system and traditional adaptive optics system. Especially in system like multi-conjugate adaptive optics, sodium laser guide star asterism which is formed by several laser guide stars in certain pattern is required to probe more atmospheric turbulence in different directions. To achieve this, a sodium laser guide star asterism launching platform is required. In this paper, we will introduce the sodium laser guide star asterism launching platform built and tested on the 1.8m telescope of the Gaomeigu Observatory. The platform has two functions: one is to compare the performance of sodium laser guide stars generated by different lasers at the same place; the other is to generate sodium laser guide star asterism with adjustable shape. The field test results at the beginning of 2021 verify the important role of the platform, which is also the first time to realize sodium laser guide star asterism in China.

Differentially Private Range Query on Shortest Paths

We consider differentially private range queries on a graph where query ranges are defined as the set of edges on a shortest path of the graph. Edges in the graph carry sensitive attributes and the goal is to report the sum of these attributes on a shortest path for counting query or the minimum of the attributes in a bottleneck query. We use differential privacy to ensure that the release of these query answers provide protection of the privacy of the sensitive edge attributes. Our goal is to develop mechanisms that minimize the additive error of the reported answers with the given privacy budget. In this paper we report non-trivial results for private range queries on shortest paths. For counting range queries we can achieve an additive error of $\tilde O(n^{1/3})$ for $\varepsilon$-DP and $\tilde O(n^{1/4})$ for $(\varepsilon, δ)$-DP. We present two algorithms where we control the final error by carefully balancing perturbation added to the edge attributes directly versus perturbation added to a subset of range query answers (which can be used for other range queries). Bottleneck range queries are easier and can be answered with polylogarithmic additive errors using standard techniques.

The Long-term Monitoring Results of Insight-HXMT in the First 4 Yr Galactic Plane Scanning Survey

The first X-ray source catalog of Insight-HXMT Galactic Plane (|b|<10deg) Scanning Survey (GPSS) is presented based on the data accumulated from June 2017 to August 2021. The 4 yr limit sensitivities at main energy bands can reach 8.2x10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2} (2-6 keV), 4.21x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (7-40 keV) and 2.78x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (25-100 keV). More than 1300 sources have been monitored at a wide band (1$-$100\,keV), of which 223 sources have a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. We combined the GPSS data of Insight-HXMT and MAXI and found it is feasible to obtain more complete long-term light curves from their scanning results. The flux variabilities at different energy bands of the 223 bright sources are analyzed based on the excess variances. It is found that the fluxes of X-ray binaries are more active than those of supernova remnants and isolated pulsars. Different types of binaries, e.g., low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), neutron star binaries, and black hole binaries, also distinctively show different regularities. In addition, the relations between the hardness ratio (HR) and excess variances, and HR and source types are analyzed. It is obvious that the HRs of HMXBs tend to be harder than those of LMXBs and HMXBs tend to be more active than those of LMXBs.
