Infrared nanoscopy of Dirac plasmons at the graphene-SiO2 interface

We report on infrared (IR) nanoscopy of 2D plasmon excitations of Dirac fermions in graphene. This is achieved by confining mid-IR radiation at the apex of a nanoscale tip: an approach yielding two orders of magnitude increase in the value of in-plane component of incident wavevector q compared to free space propagation. At these high wavevectors, the Dirac plasmon is found to dramatically enhance the near-field interaction with mid-IR surface phonons of SiO2 substrate. Our data augmented by detailed modeling establish graphene as a new medium supporting plasmonic effects that can be controlled by gate voltage.

On-chip optical diode based on silicon photonic crystal heterojunctions

Optical isolation is a long pursued object with fundamental difficulty in integrated photonics. As a step towards this goal, we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of on-chip wavelength-scale optical diodes that are made from the heterojunction between two different silicon two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal slabs with directional bandgap mismatch and different mode transitions. The measured transmission spectra show considerable unidirectional transmission behavior, in good agreement with numerical simulations. The experimental realization of on-chip optical diodes using all-dielectric, passive, and linear silicon photonic crystal structures may help to construct on-chip optical logical devices without nonlinearity or magnetism, and would open up a road towards photonic computers.

Faraday Rotation in Pulsar Magnetosphere

The magnetosphere of a pulsar is composed of relativistic plasmas streaming along the magnetic field lines and corotating with the pulsar. We study the intrinsic Faraday rotation in the pulsar magnetosphere by critically examining the wave modes and the variations of polarization properties for the circularly polarized natural modes under various assumptions about the magnetosphere plasma properties. Since it is difficult to describe analytically the Faraday rotation effect in such a plasma, we use numerical integrations to study the wave propagation effects in the corotating magnetosphere. Faraday rotation effect is identified among other propagation effects, such as wave mode coupling and the cyclotron absorption. In a highly symmetrical electron-positron pair plasma, the Faraday rotation effect is found to be negligible. Only for asymmetrical plasmas, such as the electron-ion streaming plasma, can the Faraday rotation effect become significant, and the Faraday rotation angle is found to be approximately proportional to $λ^{0.5}$ instead of the usual $λ^2$-law. For such electrons-ion plasma of pulsar magnetosphere, the induced rotation measure becomes larger at higher frequencies, and should have opposite signs for the emissions from opposite magnetic poles.

Heat transport in an open transverse-field Ising chain

The heat conduction in an open transverse-field Ising chain is studied by using quantization in the Fock space of operators in the weak coupling regimes, i.e. the coupling is much smaller than the transverse field. The non-equilibrium steady state is obtained for large size systems coupled to Markovian baths at its ends. The ballistic transport is observed in the uniform chain and normal diffusion in the random-exchange chain. {In addition, the ballistic-diffusive transition is found at the intermediate disorder regime.} The thermal conductivity $κ$ is also calculated in the low and high temperature regimes. It is shown that $κ$ decays as $κ\sim T^{-2}$ at high temperatures.

Time-resolved detection of spin-transfer-driven ferromagnetic resonance and spin torque measurement in magnetic tunnel junctions

Several experimental techniques have been introduced in recent years in attempts to measure spin transfer torque in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). The dependence of spin torque on bias is important for understanding fundamental spin physics in magnetic devices and for applications. However, previous techniques have provided only indirect measures of the torque and their results to date for the bias dependence are qualitatively and quantitatively inconsistent. Here we demonstrate that spin torque in MTJs can be measured directly by using time-domain techniques to detect resonant magnetic precession in response to an oscillating spin torque. The technique is accurate in the high-bias regime relevant for applications, and because it detects directly small-angle linear-response magnetic dynamics caused by spin torque it is relatively immune to artifacts affecting competing techniques. At high bias we find that the spin torque vector differs markedly from the simple lowest-order Taylor series approximations commonly assumed.

Terahertz wave emission from mesoscopic crystals of BSCCO

We study the Terahertz (THz) emission mechanism in BSCCO with an external magnetic field theoretically. The total power is proportional to the square of the number of layers and the frequency. Under the small size limitation, the angular distribution is similar to that in the dipole emission. The present theoretical results for THz power output are in the same order of magnitude as the experimental ones, in contrast with previous simulations. A series of size-dependent intrinsic frequencies are also observed. When the external frequency induced by the external current resonates with intrinsic ones, the distinct THz emission is observed.

Polarization Changes of Pulsars due to Wave Propagation Through Magnetospheres

We study the propagation effects of radio waves in a pulsar magnetosphere, composed of relativistic electron-positron pair plasmas streaming along the magnetic field lines and corotating with the pulsar. We critically examine the various physical effects that can potentially influence the observed wave intensity and polarization, including resonant cyclotron absorption, wave mode coupling due to pulsar rotation, wave propagation through quasi-tangential regions (where the photon ray is nearly parallel to the magnetic field) and mode circularization due to the difference in the electron/positron density/velocity distributions. We numerically integrate the transfer equations for wave polarization in the rotating magnetosphere, taking account of all the propagation effects in a self-consistent manner. For typical magnetospheric plasma parameters produced by pair cascade, we find that the observed radio intensity and polarization profiles can be strongly modified by the propagation effects. For relatively large impact parameter (the minimum angle between the magnetic dipole axis and the line of sight), the polarization angle profile is similar to the prediction from the Rotating Vector Model, except for a phase shift and an appreciable circular polarization. For smaller impact parameter, the linear polarization position angle may exhibit a sudden $90^o$ jump due to the quasi-tangential propagation effect, accompanied by complex circular polarization profile. Some applications of our results are discussed, including the origin of non-gaussion pulse profiles, the relationship between the position angle profile and circular polarization in conal-double pulsars, and the orthogonal polarization modes.

Polarized X-rays from Magnetized Neutron Stars

We review the polarization properties of X-ray emission from highly magnetized neutron stars, focusing on emission from the stellar surfaces. We discuss how x-ray polarization can be used to constrain neutron star magnetic field and emission geometry, and to probe strong-field quantum electrodynamics and possibly constrain the properties of axions.

Polarization Evolution in A Strongly Magnetized Vacuum: QED Effect and Polarized X-ray Emission from Magnetized Neutron Stars

X-ray photons emitted from the surface or atmosphere of a magnetized neutron star is highly polarized. However, the observed polarization may be modified due to photon propagation through the star's magnetosphere. For photon frequencies much larger than the typical radio frequency, vacuum birefringence due to strong-field quantum electrodynamics dominates over the plasma effect. We study the evolution of photon polarization in the magnetized QED vacuum of a neutron star magnetosphere, paying particular attention to the propagation effect across the quasi-tangential (QT) point, where the photon momentum is nearly aligned with the magnetic field. In agreement with previous studies, we find that in most regions of the magnetosphere, the photon polarization modes are decoupled due to vacuum birefringence, and therefore a large net linear polarization can be expected when the radiation escapes the magnetosphere. However, we show that X-ray polarization may change significantly when the photon passes through the QT region. When averaging over a finite emission area, the net effect of QT propagation is to reduce the degree of linear polarization; the reduction factor depends on the photon energy, magnetic field strength, geometry, rotation phase and the emission area, and can be more than a factor of two. We derive the general conditions under which the QT propagation effect is important, and provide an easy-to-use prescription to account for the QT effect for most practical calculations of X-ray polarization signals from magnetic neutron stars. For a neutron star with a dipole magnetic field, the QT effect can be important for emission from the polar cap for certain magnetic field and energy ranges, and is negligible for emission from the entire stellar surface.

Wave Modes in the Magnetospheres of Pulsars and Magnetars

We study the wave propagation modes in the relativistic streaming pair plasma of the magnetospheres of pulsars and magnetars, focusing on the effect of vacuum polarization. We show that the combined plasma and vacuum polarization effects give rise to a vacuum resonance, where ``avoided mode crossing'' occurs between the extraordinary mode and the (superluminous) ordinary mode. When a photon propagates from the vacuum-polarization-dominated region at small radii to the plasma-dominated region at large radii, its polarization state may undergo significant change across the vacuum resonance. We map out the parameter regimes (e.g., field strength, plasma density and Lorentz factor) under which the vacuum resonance occurs and examine how wave propagation is affected by the resonance. Some possible applications of our results are discussed, including high-frequency radio emission from pulsars and possibly magnetars, and optical/IR emission from neutron star surfaces and inner magnetospheres.

Spin-Kick Correlation in Neutron Stars: Alignment Conditions and Implications

Recent observations of pulsar wind nebulae and radio polarization profiles revealed a tendency of the alignment between the spin and velocity directions in neutron stars. We study the condition for spin-kick alignment using a toy model, in which the kick consists of many off-centered, randomly-oriented thrusts. Both analytical considerations and numerical simulations indicate that spin-kick alignment cannot be easily achieved if the proto-neutron star does not possess some initial angular momentum, contrary to some previous claims. To obtain the observed spin-kick misalignment angle distribution, the initial spin period of the neutron star must be smaller than the kick timescale. Typically, an initial period of a hundred milliseconds or less is required.

Neutron Star Kicks in Isolated and Binary Pulsars: Observational Constraints and Implications for Kick Mechanisms

We study observational constraints on neutron star (NS) kicks for isolated pulsars and for neutron stars in binary systems. We are particularly interested in the evidence of kick-spin alignment/misalignment and its dependence on the neutron star initial spin period. For several young pulsars, X-ray observations of compact nebulae showed that pulsar proper motion is aligned with the spin direction as defined by the symmetry axis of the nebula. We also critically examine the measurements of the proper motion and the projected spin axis from a large sample of pulsars with well-calibrated polarization data. We find that among the two dozen pulsars for which reliable measurements are available, there is a significant correlation between the spin axis and the proper motion. For various NS binaries, including double NS systems, binaries with massive main-sequence star companion and binaries with massive white-dwarf companion, we obtain constraints on the kick magnitudes and directions from the observed orbital characteristics of the system. We find that the kick velocity is misaligned with the the NS spin axis in a number of systems, and the NS spin period (when available) in these systems is generally longer than several hundreds milliseconds. These constraints, together with spin-kick alignment observed in many isolated pulsars, suggest that the kick timescale is hundreds of milliseconds to 1 s, so that spin-kick alignment or misalignment can be obtained depending on the initial spin period of the NS. We discuss the implication of our result for various NS kick mechanisms.
