Lectures on local theta correspondence

This set of lecture notes on local theta correspondence is the written version of a mini-course the author gave in March of 2025 for the program ``Representation Theory and Noncommutative Geometry" at the Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris. The emphasis is on the Archimedean theory, which concerns representations of classical Lie groups. Section 1 is about the basic theory, including Howe's Duality Theorem, and the conservation relations. Section 2 highlights the invariant-theoretic nature of local theta correspondence via the proof of the conservation relations. Sections 3 and 4 explain how two fundamental invariants of representations behave under local theta correspondence. The final section discusses applications to unitary representation theory.

Special unipotent representations of real classical groups: construction and unitarity

Let $G$ be a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group). We consider a nilpotent adjoint orbit $\check{\mathcal O}$ of $\check G$, the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We classify all special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. When $\check{\mathcal O}$ has good parity in the sense of Moeglin, we construct all such representations of $G$ via the method of theta lifting. As a consequence of the construction and the classification, we conclude that all special unipotent representations of $G$ are unitarizable, as predicted by the Arthur-Barbasch-Vogan conjecture. We also determine precise structure of the associated cycles of special unipotent representations of $G$. The paper is the second in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Special unipotent representations of real classical groups: counting and reduction

Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of Mœglin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Genuine special unipotent representations of spin groups

We determine all genuine special unipotent representations of real spin groups and quaternionic spin groups, and show in particular that all of them are unitarizable. We also show that there are no genuine special unipotent representations of complex spin groups.

On the notion of metaplectic Barbasch-Vogan duality

In analogy with the Barbasch-Vogan duality for real reductive linear groups, we introduce a duality notion useful for the representation theory of the real metaplectic groups. This is a map on the set of nilpotent orbits in a complex symplectic Lie algebra, whose range consists of the so-called metaplectic special nilpotent orbits. We relate this duality notion with the theory of primitive ideals and extend the notion of special unipotent representations to the real metaplectic groups. We also interpret the duality map in terms of double cells of Weyl group representations.

Local theta correspondence: the basic theory

We give an elementary introduction to Classical Invariant Theory and its modern extension "Transcending Classical Invariant Theory", commonly known as the theory of local theta correspondence. We explain the two fundamental assertions of the theory: the Howe duality conjecture and the Kudla-Rallis conservation relation conjecture. We give a status report on the problem of explicitly describing local theta correspondence in terms of Langlands-Vogan parameters. We conclude with a discussion on a certain problem of automatic continuity, which manifests unity of the theory in algebraic and smooth settings.

Local theta correspondence and nilpotent invariants

We consider two types of nilpotent invariants associated to smooth representations, namely generalized Whittaker models, and associated characters (in the case of a real reductive group). We survey some recent results on the behavior of these nilpotent invariants under local theta correspondence, and highlight the special role of a certain double fiberation of moment maps.

Degenerate principal series of metaplectic groups and Howe correspondence

The main purpose of this article is to supplement the authors' results on degenerate principal series representations of real symplectic groups with the analogous results for metaplectic groups. The basic theme, as in the previous case, is that their structures are anticipated by certain natural subrepresentations constructed from Howe correspondence. This supplement is necessary as these representations play a key role in understanding the basic structure of Howe correspondence (and its complications in the archimedean case), and their global counterparts play an equally essential part in the proof of Siegel-Weil formula and its generalizations (work of Kudla-Rallis). The full results in the metaplectic case also shed light on the seeming peculiarities, when the results in the symplectic case are viewed in their isolation.

Local theta lifting of generalized Whittaker models associated to nilpotent orbits

Let $(G,\tilde{G})$ be a reductive dual pair over a local field ${\Fontauri k}$ of characteristic 0, and denote by $V$ and $\tilde{V}$ the standard modules of $G$ and $\tilde{G}$, respectively. Consider the set $Max Hom(V,\tilde{V})$ of full rank elements in $Hom(V,\tilde{V})$, and the nilpotent orbit correspondence $\mathcal{O} \subset \mathfrak{g}$ and $Θ(\mathcal{O})\subset \tilde{\mathfrak{g}}$ induced by elements of $Max Hom(V,\tilde{V})$ via the moment maps. Let $(π,\mathscr{V})$ be a smooth irreducible representation of $G$. We show that there is a correspondence of the generalized Whittaker models of $π$ of type $\mathcal{O}$ and of $Θ(π)$ of type $Θ(\mathcal{O})$, where $Θ(π)$ is the full theta lift of $π$. When $(G,\tilde{G})$ is in the stable range with $G$ the smaller member, every nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O} \subset \mathfrak{g}$ is in the image of the moment map from $Max Hom (V,\tilde{V})$. In this case, and for ${\Fontauri k}$ non-Archimedean, the result has been previously obtained by Mœglin in a different approach.

Vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions

Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $χ$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Fourier transform and rigidity of certain distributions

Let $E$ be a finite dimensional vector space over a local field, and $F$ be its dual. For a closed subset $X$ of $E$, and $Y$ of $F$, consider the space $D^{-ξ}(E;X,Y)$ of tempered distributions on $E$ whose support are contained in $X$ and support of whose Fourier transform are contained in $Y$. We show that $D^{-ξ}(E;X,Y)$ possesses a certain rigidity property, for $X$, $Y$ which are some finite unions of affine subspaces.

A note on special orthogonal groups following Waldspurger

The purpose of this note is to verify that the archimedean multiplicity one theorems shown for orthogonal groups (as well as general linear and unitary groups) in a previous paper of the authors remain valid for special orthogonal groups. The necessary ingredients to establish this variant are due to Waldspurger.

Multiplicity one theorems: the Archimedean case

Let $G$ be one of the classical Lie groups $\GL_{n+1}(\R)$, $\GL_{n+1}(\C)$, $\oU(p,q+1)$, $\oO(p,q+1)$, $\oO_{n+1}(\C)$, $\SO(p,q+1)$, $\SO_{n+1}(\C)$, and let $G'$ be respectively the subgroup $\GL_{n}(\R)$, $\GL_{n}(\C)$, $\oU(p,q)$, $\oO(p,q)$, $\oO_n(\C)$, $\SO(p,q)$, $\SO_n(\C)$, embedded in $G$ in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of $G'$ occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of $G$. Similar results are proved for the Jacobi groups $\GL_{n}(\R)\ltimes \oH_{2n+1}(\R)$, $\GL_{n}(\C)\ltimes \oH_{2n+1}(\C)$, $\oU(p,q)\ltimes \oH_{2p+2q+1}(\R)$, $\Sp_{2n}(\R)\ltimes \oH_{2n+1}(\R)$, $\Sp_{2n}(\C)\ltimes \oH_{2n+1}(\C)$, with their respective subgroups $\GL_{n}(\R)$, $\GL_{n}(\C)$, $\oU(p,q)$, $\Sp_{2n}(\R)$, $\Sp_{2n}(\C)$.

A general form of Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion

We formalize the notion of matrix coefficients for distributional vectors in a representation of a real reductive group, which consist of generalized functions on the group. As an application, we state and prove a Gelfand-Kazhdan criterion for a real reductive group in very general settings.

Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case

In this paper, we prove the uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models in the archimedean case. As a key ingredient, we introduce a new descent argument based on two geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $χ$-incompatibility.
