Domino-like magnetic phase transition induced by a bias voltage in FeRh thin film

The first-order magnetic phase transition (MPT) usually happens with a very wide magnetic field span about tens of thousands Oersted which hinders its applications. In this work, we induce a domino-like MPT via introducing a bias voltage in FeRh thin film and thus realize a large narrowing of transition magnetic field span from 6*10^4 Oe to lower than 2*10^3 Oe at room temperature. Meanwhile, nonvolatile switchings between pure magnetic phases of FeRh at room temperature also can be realized by applying voltage pulses. The critical condition and phase diagram for domino-like MPTs are obtained in theory and our experiments support it well. Our works not only benefit the studies and applications of MPT-based devices but also are significant in the applications of the phase transition systems with resistance change.

Microwave excitations and hysteretic magnetization dynamics of stripe domain films

FeNi films with the stripe domain (SD) pattern are prepared by electrodeposition and sputtering methods. The magnetic domain, static magnetic parameters, and quality factor, as well as dynamic properties of the two films, are respectively performed. The results show the magnetizations of the film were dependent on the direction of SD, and the rotation of the SD is lagging behind the magnetization reversal. The microwave properties of the SD emerge dynamic hysteresis before the saturation magnetic field. These microwave properties are selectively excited with acoustic mode, optical mode, and spin-wave mode. The frequency and intensity of different resonance modes of stripe domain are determined by the local magnetization. The magnetization variations and the rotation of SD of different modes are further illuminated by the micromagnetic simulation. The magnetic anisotropy and the resonance intensity of permeability of different modes were finally described by the modified resonance equations.

Phase-resolved electrical detection of coherently coupled magnonic devices

We demonstrate the electrical detection of magnon-magnon hybrid dynamics in yttrium iron garnet/permalloy (YIG/Py) thin film bilayer devices. Direct microwave current injection through the conductive Py layer excites the hybrid dynamics consisting of the uniform mode of Py and the first standing spin wave ($n=1$) mode of YIG, which are coupled via interfacial exchange. Both the two hybrid modes, with Py or YIG dominated excitations, can be detected via the spin rectification signals from the conductive Py layer, providing phase resolution of the coupled dynamics. The phase characterization is also applied to a nonlocally excited Py device, revealing the additional phase shift due to the perpendicular Oersted field. Our results provide a device platform for exploring hybrid magnonic dynamics and probing their phases, which are crucial for implementing coherent information processing with magnon excitations

Advances in coherent coupling between magnons and acoustic phonons

The interaction between magnetic and acoustic excitations have recently inspired many interdisciplinary studies ranging from fundamental physics to circuit implementation. Specifically, the exploration of their coherent interconversion enabled via the magnetoelastic coupling opens a new playground combining straintronics and spintronics, and provides a unique platform for building up on-chip coherent information processing networks with miniaturized magnonic and acoustic devices. In this Perspective, we will focus on the recent progress of magnon-phonon coupled dynamic systems, including materials, circuits, imaging and new physics. In particular, we highlight the unique features such as nonreciprocal acoustic wave propagation and strong coupling between magnons and phonons in magnetic thin-film systems, which provides a unique platform for their coherent manipulation and transduction. We will also review the frontier of surface acoustic wave resonators in coherent quantum transduction and discuss how the novel acoustic circuit design can be applied in microwave spintronics.

Direct Imaging of Resonant Phonon-Magnon Coupling

Direct detection of phonons is important for the investigation of information interconversion between the resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. Here we report resonant coupling of magnons and phonons, which can be directly visualized by using micro focused Brillouin light scattering in Ni/LiNbO3 hybrid heterostructures. The patterns of surface acoustic wave phonons, originating from the interference between the original wave ψ0(A_0,k) and reflected wave ψ1(A_1,-k), can be modulated by magnetic field due to the magnon-phonon coupling. By analyzing the information of phonons obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy, the properties of the magnon system (Ni film), e.g., ferromagnetic resonance field and resonance linewidth can be determined. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.

Phonon Transport Controlled by Ferromagnetic Resonance

The resonant coupling of phonons and magnons is important for the interconversion of phononic and spin degrees of freedom. We studied the phonon transmission in LiNbO3 manipulated by the dynamic magnetization in a Ni thin film. It was observed that the phonons could be absorbed strongly through resonant magnon-phonon coupling, which was realized by optimizing the interfacial coupling between Ni and LiNbO3. The line shapes of phonon transmission were further investigated considering the magnon-phonon interconversion in the elastically driven ferromagnetic resonance process. The results promote unique routes for phonon manipulation and detection in the presence of magnetization dynamics.

Metastable magnetic bubble in [Co/Pd]4/Py multilayers

Magnetic bubbles are topologically spin textures that offering the interesting physics and great promise for next-generation information storage technologies. The main obstacles so far are that magnetic bubbles are generated with no field stimuli in new material systems at room temperature. Here, we report the observation of individual magnetic bubbles and its high frequency measurement at room temperature in an exchange-coupled [Co/Pd]4/Py multilayers. We demonstrate that the emergence of magnetic bubbles at remanence can be tuned by the in-plane tilted magnetic field (roughly 3°) along the film plane at room temperature. High frequency results indicate that the presence of magnetic bubbles leads to broadening of the magnetic permeability spectrum lines (due to the non-uniformity of the magnetic moments). Our findings open the door to the bubble-based spintronics at room temperature in exchange-coupled magnetic multilayers.
