Mapping dust attenuation and the 2175 Å bump at kpc scales in nearby galaxies

We develop a novel approach to measure dust attenuation properties of galaxies, including the dust opacity, shape of the attenuation curve and the strength of the 2175Å absorption feature. From an observed spectrum, the method uses a model-independent approach to derive a relative attenuation curve, with absolute amplitude calibrated using NIR photometry. The dust-corrected spectrum is fitted with stellar population models to derive the dust-free model spectrum, which is compared with the observed SED/spectrum from NUV to NIR to determine dust attenuation properties. We apply this method to investigate dust attenuation on kpc scales, using a sample of 134 galaxies with integral field spectroscopy from MaNGA, NIR imaging from 2MASS, and NUV imaging from Swift/UVOT. We find the attenuation curve slope and the 2175Å bump in both optical and NUV span a wide range at kpc scales. The slope is shallower at higher optical opacity, regardless of the specific star formation rate (sSFR), minor-to-major axis ratio (b/a) of galaxies and the location of spaxels within individual galaxies. The 2175Å bump presents a strong negative correlation with the sSFR, while the correlations with the optical opacity, b/a and the location within individual galaxies are all weak. All these trends appear to be independent of the stellar mass of galaxies. Our results support the scenario that the variation of the 2175Å bump is driven predominantly by processes related to star formation, such as the destruction of small dust grains by UV radiation in star-forming regions.

The IRX-Beta Relation in kpc-sized Star Forming Regions in Nearby Galaxies

The effect of dust attenuation on a galaxy's light depends on a number of physical properties, such as geometry and dust composition, both of which can vary across the faces of galaxies. To investigate this variation, we continue analysis on star-forming regions in 29 galaxies studied previously. We analyse these regions using Swift/UVOT and WISE images, as well as SDSS/MaNGA emission line maps to constrain the relationship between the infrared excess (IRX) and the UV spectral index (beta) for each star forming region. This relationship can be used to constrain which dust attenuation law is appropriate for the region. We find that the value of Dn(4000) for a region is correlated with both IRX and beta, and that the gas-phase metallicity is strongly correlated with the IRX. This correlation between metallicity and IRX suggests that regardless of aperture, metal rich regions have steeper attenuation curves. We also find that integrated galactic light follows nearly the same IRX-beta relationship as that found for kiloparsec-sized star forming regions. This similarity may suggest that the attenuation law followed by the galaxy is essentially the same as that followed by the regions, although the relatively large size of our star forming regions complicates this interpretation because optical opacity and attenuation curves have been observed to vary within individual galaxies.

Probing Dust and Water in Martian Atmosphere with Far-Infrared Frequency Spacecraft Occultation

Airborne dust plays an active role in determining the thermal structure and chemical composition of the present-day atmosphere of Mars and possibly the planet's climate evolution over time through radiative--convective and cloud microphysics processes. Thus, accurate measurements of the distribution and variability of dust are required. Observations from the Mars Global Surveyor/Thermal Emission Spectrometer Mars Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter/Mars Climate Sounder and Mars Express/Fourier Transform Spectrometer and the Curiosity Rover have limited capability to measure dust. We show that spacecraft occultation of the Martian atmosphere at far-infrared frequencies between 1 and 10 THz can provide the needed global and temporal data on atmospheric dust by providing co-located measurements of temperature and dust opacity from the top of the atmosphere all the way down to the surface. In addition, spacecraft occultation by a small-satellite constellation could provide global measurements of the development of dust storms.

PBFormer: Capturing Complex Scene Text Shape with Polynomial Band Transformer

We present PBFormer, an efficient yet powerful scene text detector that unifies the transformer with a novel text shape representation Polynomial Band (PB). The representation has four polynomial curves to fit a text's top, bottom, left, and right sides, which can capture a text with a complex shape by varying polynomial coefficients. PB has appealing features compared with conventional representations: 1) It can model different curvatures with a fixed number of parameters, while polygon-points-based methods need to utilize a different number of points. 2) It can distinguish adjacent or overlapping texts as they have apparent different curve coefficients, while segmentation-based or points-based methods suffer from adhesive spatial positions. PBFormer combines the PB with the transformer, which can directly generate smooth text contours sampled from predicted curves without interpolation. A parameter-free cross-scale pixel attention (CPA) module is employed to highlight the feature map of a suitable scale while suppressing the other feature maps. The simple operation can help detect small-scale texts and is compatible with the one-stage DETR framework, where no postprocessing exists for NMS. Furthermore, PBFormer is trained with a shape-contained loss, which not only enforces the piecewise alignment between the ground truth and the predicted curves but also makes curves' positions and shapes consistent with each other. Without bells and whistles about text pre-training, our method is superior to the previous state-of-the-art text detectors on the arbitrary-shaped text datasets.

RestGPT: Connecting Large Language Models with Real-World RESTful APIs

Tool-augmented large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in tackling a broad range of tasks. However, existing methods are mainly restricted to specifically designed tools and fail to fulfill complex instructions, having great limitations when confronted with real-world scenarios. In this paper, we explore a more realistic scenario by connecting LLMs with RESTful APIs, which adhere to the widely adopted REST software architectural style for web service development. To address the practical challenges of tackling complex instructions, we propose RestGPT, which exploits the power of LLMs and conducts a coarse-to-fine online planning mechanism to enhance the abilities of task decomposition and API selection. RestGPT also contains an API executor tailored for calling RESTful APIs, which can meticulously formulate parameters and parse API responses. To fully evaluate the performance of RestGPT, we propose RestBench, a high-quality benchmark which consists of two real-world scenarios and human-annotated instructions with gold solution paths. Experiments show that RestGPT is able to achieve impressive results in complex tasks and has strong robustness, which paves a new way towards AGI. RestGPT and RestBench is publicly available at https://restgpt.github.io/.

Generalizable Learning Reconstruction for Accelerating MR Imaging via Federated Neural Architecture Search

Heterogeneous data captured by different scanning devices and imaging protocols can affect the generalization performance of the deep learning magnetic resonance (MR) reconstruction model. While a centralized training model is effective in mitigating this problem, it raises concerns about privacy protection. Federated learning is a distributed training paradigm that can utilize multi-institutional data for collaborative training without sharing data. However, existing federated learning MR image reconstruction methods rely on models designed manually by experts, which are complex and computational expensive, suffering from performance degradation when facing heterogeneous data distributions. In addition, these methods give inadequate consideration to fairness issues, namely, ensuring that the model's training does not introduce bias towards any specific dataset's distribution. To this end, this paper proposes a generalizable federated neural architecture search framework for accelerating MR imaging (GAutoMRI). Specifically, automatic neural architecture search is investigated for effective and efficient neural network representation learning of MR images from different centers. Furthermore, we design a fairness adjustment approach that can enable the model to learn features fairly from inconsistent distributions of different devices and centers, and thus enforce the model generalize to the unseen center. Extensive experiments show that our proposed GAutoMRI has better performances and generalization ability compared with six state-of-the-art federated learning methods. Moreover, the GAutoMRI model is significantly more lightweight, making it an efficient choice for MR image reconstruction tasks. The code will be made available at https://github.com/ternencewu123/GAutoMRI.

Weighted Sum-Rate Maximization for Rate-Splitting Multiple Access Based Multi-antenna Broadcast Channel with Confidential Messages

In this paper, we take all users' secrecy rate requirements into consideration and propose a rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA)-based secure beamforming approach to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR), where multi-user interference (MUI) is partially decoded and partially treated as noise. User messages are split and encoded into common and private streams. Each user not only decodes the common stream and the intended private stream, but also eavesdrops other users' private streams. To solve the introduced non-convex security constraints in the formulated problem, a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based approach is first proposed to maximize the instantaneous WSR under perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). When only imperfect CSIT is available, to ensure robustness, a weighted ergodic sum-rate maximization problem is formulated. Then, a joint weighted minimum mean square error and SCA-based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the precoder. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with baseline schemes, the performance advantage of the proposed RSMA-based secure beamforming design has been shown in terms of WSR and robustness to channel errors while ensuring all users' security requirements thanks to its powerful interference management capability.

Measurement of ultra-high-energy diffuse gamma-ray emission of the Galactic plane from 10 TeV to 1 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A

The diffuse Galactic $γ$-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this work we report the measurements of diffuse $γ$-rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner ($15^{\circ} 10$~TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of $-2.99\pm0.04$, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of $\sim3$ than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of $-2.99\pm0.07$ is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for $10\lesssim E\lesssim60$ TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

Teach LLMs to Personalize -- An Approach inspired by Writing Education

Personalized text generation is an emerging research area that has attracted much attention in recent years. Most studies in this direction focus on a particular domain by designing bespoke features or models. In this work, we propose a general approach for personalized text generation using large language models (LLMs). Inspired by the practice of writing education, we develop a multistage and multitask framework to teach LLMs for personalized generation. In writing instruction, the task of writing from sources is often decomposed into multiple steps that involve finding, evaluating, summarizing, synthesizing, and integrating information. Analogously, our approach to personalized text generation consists of multiple stages: retrieval, ranking, summarization, synthesis, and generation. In addition, we introduce a multitask setting that helps the model improve its generation ability further, which is inspired by the observation in education that a student's reading proficiency and writing ability are often correlated. We evaluate our approach on three public datasets, each of which covers a different and representative domain. Our results show significant improvements over a variety of baselines.

FedAutoMRI: Federated Neural Architecture Search for MR Image Reconstruction

Centralized training methods have shown promising results in MR image reconstruction, but privacy concerns arise when gathering data from multiple institutions. Federated learning, a distributed collaborative training scheme, can utilize multi-center data without the need to transfer data between institutions. However, existing federated learning MR image reconstruction methods rely on manually designed models which have extensive parameters and suffer from performance degradation when facing heterogeneous data distributions. To this end, this paper proposes a novel FederAted neUral archiTecture search approach fOr MR Image reconstruction (FedAutoMRI). The proposed method utilizes differentiable architecture search to automatically find the optimal network architecture. In addition, an exponential moving average method is introduced to improve the robustness of the client model to address the data heterogeneity issue. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to use federated neural architecture search for MR image reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed FedAutoMRI can achieve promising performances while utilizing a lightweight model with only a small number of model parameters compared to the classical federated learning methods.

HiggsTools: BSM scalar phenomenology with new versions of HiggsBounds and HiggsSignals

The codes HiggsBounds and HiggsSignals compare model predictions of BSM models with extended scalar sectors to searches for additional scalars and to measurements of the detected Higgs boson at 125 GeV. We present a unification and extension of the functionalities provided by both codes into the new HiggsTools framework. The codes have been re-written in modern C++ with native Python and Mathematica interfaces for easy interactive use. We discuss the user interface for providing model predictions, now part of the new sub-library HiggsPredictions, which also provides access to many cross sections and branching ratios for reference models such as the SM. HiggsBounds now implements experimental limits purely through json data files, can better handle clusters of BSM particles of similar masses (even for complicated search topologies), and features an improved handling of mass uncertainties. Moreover, it now contains an extended list of Higgs-boson pair production searches and doubly-charged Higgs boson searches. In HiggsSignals, the treatment of different types of measurements has been unified, both in the $χ^2$ computation and in the data file format used to implement experimental results.

Highly depleted alkali metals in Jupiter's deep atmosphere

Water and ammonia vapors are known to be the major sources of spectral absorption at pressure levels observed by the microwave radiometer (MWR) on Juno. However, the brightness temperatures and limb darkening observed by the MWR at its longest wavelength channel of 50 cm (600 MHz) in the first 9 perijove passes indicate the existence of an additional source of opacity in the deep atmosphere of Jupiter (pressures beyond 100 bar). The absorption properties of ammonia and water vapor, and their relative abundances in Jupiter's atmosphere do not provide sufficient opacity in deep atmosphere to explain the 600 MHz channel observation. Here we show that free electrons due to the ionization of alkali metals, i.e. sodium, and potassium, with sub-solar metallicity [M/H] (log based 10 relative concentration to solar) in the range of [M/H] = -2 to [M/H] = -5 can provide the missing source of opacity in the deep atmosphere. If the alkali metals are not the source of additional opacity in the MWR data, then their metallicity at 1000 bars can only be even lower. The upper bound of -2 on the metallicity of the alkali metals contrasts with the other heavy elements -- C, N, S, Ar, Kr, and Xe -- which are all enriched relative to their solar abundances having a metallicity of approximately +0.5.

Telecom-band integrated multimode photonic quantum memory

Telecom-band integrated quantum memory is an elementary building block for developing quantum networks compatible with fiber communication infrastructures. Towards such a network with large capacity, an integrated multimode photonic quantum memory at telecom band has yet been demonstrated. Here we report a fiber-integrated multimode quantum storage of single photon at telecom band on a laser-written chip. The storage device is a fiber-pigtailed Er3+:LiNbO3 waveguide and allows a storage of up to 330 temporal modes of heralded single photon with 4-GHz-wide bandwidth at 1532 nm and a 167-fold increasing of coincidence detection rate with respect to single mode. Our memory system with all-fiber addressing is performed using telecom-band fiber-integrated and on-chip devices. The results represent an important step for the future quantum networks using integrated photonics devices.

Understanding INT4 Quantization for Transformer Models: Latency Speedup, Composability, and Failure Cases

Improving the deployment efficiency of transformer-based language models has been challenging given their high computation and memory cost. While INT8 quantization has recently been shown to be effective in reducing both the memory cost and latency while preserving model accuracy, it remains unclear whether we can leverage INT4 (which doubles peak hardware throughput) to achieve further latency improvement. In this study, we explore the feasibility of employing INT4 weight and activation (W4A4) quantization for language models. Our findings indicate that W4A4 quantization introduces no to negligible accuracy degradation for encoder-only and encoder-decoder models, but causes a significant accuracy drop for decoder-only models. To materialize the performance gain using W4A4, we develop a highly optimized end-to-end W4A4 encoder inference pipeline supporting different quantization strategies. Our INT4 pipeline is $8.5\times$ faster for latency-oriented scenarios and up to $3\times$ for throughput-oriented scenarios compared to the inference of FP16, and improves the SOTA BERT INT8 performance from FasterTransformer by up to $1.7\times$. We provide insights into the failure cases when applying W4A4 to decoder-only models, and further explore the compatibility of INT4 quantization with other compression methods, like pruning and layer reduction.

ZeroQuant-V2: Exploring Post-training Quantization in LLMs from Comprehensive Study to Low Rank Compensation

Post-training quantization (PTQ) has emerged as a promising technique for mitigating memory consumption and computational costs in large language models (LLMs). However, a systematic examination of various quantization schemes, model families, and quantization bit precision has been absent from the literature. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of these factors by investigating the effects of PTQ on weight-only, activation-only, and weight-and-activation quantization using diverse methods such as round-to-nearest (RTN), GPTQ, ZeroQuant, and their variants. We apply these methods to two distinct model families with parameters ranging from 125M to 176B. Our contributions include: (1) a sensitivity analysis revealing that activation quantization is generally more susceptible to weight quantization, with smaller models often outperforming larger models in terms of activation quantization; (2) an evaluation and comparison of existing PTQ methods to optimize model size reduction while minimizing the impact on accuracy, revealing that none of the current methods can achieve the original model quality for quantization with either INT4-weight or INT4-weight-and-INT8-activation; (3) based on these insights, we propose an optimized method called Low-Rank Compensation (LoRC), which employs low-rank matrices to enhance model quality recovery with a minimal increase in model size.

Machine learning-based characterization of hydrochar from biomass: Implications for sustainable energy and material production

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a process that converts biomass into versatile hydrochar without the need for prior drying. The physicochemical properties of hydrochar are influenced by biomass properties and processing parameters, making it challenging to optimize for specific applications through trial-and-error experiments. To save time and money, machine learning can be used to develop a model that characterizes hydrochar produced from different biomass sources under varying reaction processing parameters. Thus, this study aims to develop an inclusive model to characterize hydrochar using a database covering a range of biomass types and reaction processing parameters. The quality and quantity of hydrochar are predicted using two models (decision tree regression and support vector regression). The decision tree regression model outperforms the support vector regression model in terms of forecast accuracy (R2 > 0.88, RMSE < 6.848, and MAE < 4.718). Using an evolutionary algorithm, optimum inputs are identified based on cost functions provided by the selected model to optimize hydrochar for energy production, soil amendment, and pollutant adsorption, resulting in hydrochar yields of 84.31%, 84.91%, and 80.40%, respectively. The feature importance analysis reveals that biomass ash/carbon content and operating temperature are the primary factors affecting hydrochar production in the HTC process.
