The Prevalence of Type III Disc Breaks in HI-rich and Low-spin Galaxies

We investigate the origin of the type III (up-bending) discs based on a sample of 1808 galaxies from SDSS and a sub-sample of 286 galaxies with HI data from ALFALFA. We examine how the type III fraction f3, the fraction of disc galaxies which host up-bending disc breaks, depends on other galactic properties. We confirm that f3 strongly depends on the stellar concentration of galaxies. We find that HI-rich galaxies with low spins tend to have significantly more type III disc breaks than control galaxies, which are matched in concentration and stellar mass. This trend is independent of the existence of strong bars or environment of the galaxies. This result is broadly consistent with predictions from theoretical simulations, and indicates in-situ star formation fueled by gas accretion to be an important mechanism that builds the outer discs of type III galaxies.

Development of the Front-End Electronics for PandaX-III Prototype TPC

The Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III (PandaX-III) is an experiment to search for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) using 200 kg radio-pure high-pressure gaseous xenon TPC with Micromegas detectors at both ends and cathode in the middle. A small-scale TPC equipped with 7 Microbulk Micromegas detectors is developed as the prototype detector. 128 channels are readout following an X-Y design with strips of 3 mm pitch (64 channels each direction) from one Micromegas module. Highly integrated front-end electronics composed of 4 front-end cards with 1024 readout channels is designed to readout the charge of Micromegas anode signals, digitize the waveform after shaping and send compressed data to the DCM board. The cornerstone of the front-end electronics is a 64-channel application specific integrated circuit which is based on a switched capacitor array. The integral nonlinearity of the front-end electronics is less than 1% with 1 pC. The noise (RMS) of each readout channel is less than 0.9 fC with 1 microsecond peaking time and 1 pC range. Using the radioactive sources 56 Fe and 137 Cs, joint-tests of front-end electronics with the prototype TPC were carried out and the hit map of 7 Micromegas has been reconstructed.

Design of a Programmable Gain Waveform Digitization Instrument for Detector Calibration

To test and calibrate various detectors in nuclear and high energy physics experiments, a general purposed calibration instrument has been developed. All information including timing, amplitude and charge of signals can be directly obtained to calibrate detector with this instrument by amplifying and digitizing the signal waveform. The system consists of two parts, a large dynamic range pre-amplifier module and a high speed and high-resolution digitization module. The pre-amplifier module based on programmable gain amplifier and attenuator achieves gain from -26.2 dB to 24.4 dB, making it suitable to adapt to different detectors. Taking advantage of high speed and high-resolution analog-to-digit converter (ADC), the waveform digitization module samples the signal after conditioning with 12 bits resolution and up to 3.6 giga hertz samples per second (GSPS). To evaluate the feature of this instrument, an electronics testbench platform was installed and test results showed a bandwidth from direct current (DC) to 450 MHz and the effective number of bits (ENOB) is above 7 bits in high gain set and 5.8 bits in low gain set in the bandwidth range, which indicated that it had broad application prospect in detector calibration.

Study on the Real-time Lossless Data Compression Method Used in the Readout System for Micro-pattern Gas Detector

The data compression technology now is fully developed and widely used in many fields such as communication, multi-media, image information processing and so on. The large physical experiments, especially the ones with Micro-pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD), which always have many readout channels and have a lot of data to be transferred and saved, are however relatively seldom use this technology. In this paper, the real-time lossless data compression method is proposed for a general-purposed MPGD readout system. The lossless data compression can reduce the data transmission bandwidth of the system as well as keep all information of the data. The compression method discussed in the paper mainly consists of two steps. The first step is to pre-process the data according to different characteristics of different signals and the second step is to compress the pre-processed data using common lossless compression algorithm. Besides, the whole compression method is implemented in the Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and able to run real-timely. The system is then used to readout two different kinds of signals and the compression rate can reach as high as 43% and 30% respectively.

Scalable Bayes via Barycenter in Wasserstein Space

Divide-and-conquer based methods for Bayesian inference provide a general approach for tractable posterior inference when the sample size is large. These methods divide the data into smaller subsets, sample from the posterior distribution of parameters in parallel on all the subsets, and combine posterior samples from all the subsets to approximate the full data posterior distribution. The smaller size of any subset compared to the full data implies that posterior sampling on any subset is computationally more efficient than sampling from the true posterior distribution. Since the combination step takes negligible time relative to sampling, posterior computations can be scaled to massive data by dividing the full data into a sufficiently large number of data subsets. One such approach relies on the geometry of posterior distributions estimated across different subsets and combines them through their barycenter in a Wasserstein space of probability measures. We provide theoretical guarantees on the accuracy of approximation that are valid in many applications. We show that the geometric method approximates the full data posterior distribution better than its competitors across diverse simulations and reproduces known results when applied to a movie ratings database.

FPGA Based Pico-second Time Measurement System for a DIRC-like TOF Detector

A prototype of DIRC-like Time-of-Flight detector (DTOF), including a pico-second time measurement electronics, is developed and tested preliminarily. The basic structure of DTOF is composed of a fused silica radiator connected to fast micro-channel plate PMTs (MCP-PMT), and readout by a dedicated FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based front-end electronics. The full electronics chain consists of a programmable differential amplifier, a dual-threshold differential discriminator, and a timestamp Time-to-Digital convertor. By splitting a MCP-PMT output signal into two identical electronics chains, the coincidence time resolution (CTR) of pure electronics was measured as 5.6 ps. By the beam test in H4 (150GeV/c, Muon) at CERN, the intrinsic CTR of the whole detector prototype reaches 15.0 ps without using time-amplitude correction. The test results demonstrate that the FPGA based front-end electronics could achieve an excellent time performance for TOF detectors. It is very compact, cost effective with a high multi-channel capacity and short measurement dead time, which is very suitable for practical applications of large-scale high performance TOF detectors in particle physics spectrometer.

A High-performance Atmospheric Radiation Package: with applications to the radiative energy budgets of giant planets

A High-performance Atmospheric Radiation Package (HARP) is developed for studying multiple-scattering planetary atmospheres. HARP is an open-source program written in C++ that utilizes high-level data structure and parallel-computing algorithms. It is generic in three aspects. First, the construction of the model atmospheric profile is generic. The program can either take in an atmospheric profile or construct an adiabatic thermal and compositional profile, taking into account the clouds and latent heat release due to condensation. Second, the calculation of opacity is generic, based on line-by-line molecular transitions and tabulated continuum data, along with a table of correlated-k opacity provided as an option to speed up the calculation of energy fluxes. Third, the selection of the solver for the radiative transfer equation is generic. The solver is not hardwired in the program. Instead, based on the purpose, a variety of radiative transfer solvers can be chosen to couple with the atmosphere model and the opacity model. We use the program to investigate the radiative heating and cooling rates of all four giant planets in the Solar System. Our Jupiter's result is consistent with previous publications. Saturn has a nearly perfect balance between the heating rate and cooling rate. Uranus has the least radiative fluxes because of the lack of CH4 and its photochemical products. Both Uranus and Neptune suffer from a severe energy deficit in their stratospheres. Possible ways to resolve this issue are discussed. Finally, we recalculate the radiative time constants of all four giant planet atmospheres and find that the traditional values from (Conrath BJ, Gierasch PJ, Leroy SS. Temperature and Circulation in the Stratosphere of the Outer Planets. Icar. 1990;83:255-81) are significantly overestimated.

Mapping of Jupiter's tropospheric NH$_3$ abundance using ground-based IRTF/TEXES observations at 5 $μ$m

We report on results of an observing campaign to support the Juno mission. At the beginning of 2016, using TEXES (Texas Echelon cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph), mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), we obtained data cubes of Jupiter in the 1930--1943 cm$^{-1}$ spectral ranges (around 5 $μ$m), which probe the atmosphere in the 1--4 bar region, with a spectral resolution of $\approx$ 0.15 cm$^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of $\approx$ 1.4". This dataset is analysed by a code that combines a line-by-line radiative transfer model with a non-linear optimal estimation inversion method. The inversion retrieves the vertical abundance profiles of NH$_3$ - which is the main contributor at these wavelengths - with a maximum sensitivity at $\approx$ 1--3 bar, as well as the cloud transmittance. This retrieval is performed on over more than one thousand pixels of our data cubes, producing maps of the disk, where all the major belts are visible. We present our retrieved NH$_3$ abundance maps which can be compared with the distribution observed by Juno's MWR (Bolton et al., 2017; Li et al., 2017) in the 2 bar region and discuss their significance for the understanding of Jupiter's atmospheric dynamics. We are able to show important latitudinal variations - such as in the North Equatorial Belt (NEB), where the NH$_3$ abundance is observed to drop down to 60 ppmv at 2 bar - as well as longitudinal variability. In the zones, we find the NH$_3$ abundance to increase with depth, from 100 $\pm$ 15 ppmv at 1 bar to 500 $\pm$ 30 ppmv at 3 bar. We also display the cloud transmittance--NH$_3$ abundance relationship, and find different behaviour for the NEB, the other belts and the zones. Using a simple cloud model, we are able to fit this relationship, at least in the NEB, including either NH$_3$-ice or NH$_4$SH particles with sizes between 10 and 100 $μ$m.

Efficient Electrical Detection of Mid-Infrared Graphene Plasmons at Room Temperature

Optical excitation and subsequent decay of graphene plasmons can produce a significant increase in charge-carrier temperature. An efficient method to convert this temperature elevation into a measurable electrical signal at room temperature can enable important mid-infrared applications such as thermal sensing and imaging in ubiquitous mobile devices. However, as appealing as this goal might be, it is still unrealized due to the modest thermoelectric coefficient and weak temperature-dependence of carrier transport in graphene. Here, we demonstrate mid-infrared graphene detectors consisting of arrays of plasmonic resonators interconnected by quasi one-dimensional nanoribbons. Localized barriers associated with disorder in the nanoribbons produce a dramatic temperature dependence of carrier transport, thus enabling the electrical detection of plasmon decay in the nearby graphene resonators. We further realize a device with a subwavelength footprint of 5*5 um2 operating at 12.2 um, an external responsivity of 16 mA/W, a low noise-equivalent power of 1.3 nW/Hz1/2 at room temperature, and an operational frequency potentially beyond gigahertz. Importantly, our device is fabricated using large-scale graphene and possesses a simple two-terminal geometry, representing an essential step toward the realization of on-chip graphene mid-infrared detector arrays.

Unravelling the role of vacancies in lead halide perovskite through electrical switching of photoluminescence

Methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite (MAPbI3) semiconductor displays outstanding photovoltaic and light emitting properties. We address the unique behavior in which a bias voltage can be used to switch on and off the luminescence of a planar film with lateral symmetric electrodes. Instead of a homogeneous suppression of emission, as in other organic semiconductor films, in MAPbI3 films a dark region advances from the positive electrode at a slow velocity of order of 1 um s-1. Here we explain the existence of the sharp front in terms of the drift of ionic vacancies that drastically reduce the radiative recombination rate in the film. Based on a dynamic transport model we show that the square reciprocal of the electrical current is linear with time in agreement with the experimental observations. This insight leads to a direct determination of the diffusion coefficient of iodine vacancies D = 6 10-9 cm2 s-1 and provides detailed information and control on the effect of ionic conduction over the electrooptical properties of hybrid perovskite materials.

On Posterior Consistency of Tail Index for Bayesian Kernel Mixture Models

Asymptotic theory of tail index estimation has been studied extensively in the frequentist literature on extreme values, but rarely in the Bayesian context. We investigate whether popular Bayesian kernel mixture models are able to support heavy tailed distributions and consistently estimate the tail index. We show that posterior inconsistency in tail index is surprisingly common for both parametric and nonparametric mixture models. We then present a set of sufficient conditions under which posterior consistency in tail index can be achieved, and verify these conditions for Pareto mixture models under general mixing priors.

Multiplicity Dependence of Charged Particle, $ϕ$ Meson and Multi-strange Particle Productions in p+p Collisions at $\sqrt{\rm s}$ = 200 GeV with PYTHIA Simulation

We report the multiplicity dependence of charged particle productions for $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, $\overline{p}$ and $ϕ$ meson at $|y| < 1.0$ in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{\rm s}$ = 200 GeV with $\rm PYTHIA$ simulation. The impact of parton multiple interactions and gluon contributions is studied and found to be possible sources of the particle yields splitting as a function of $p_T$ with respect to multiplicity. No obvious particle species dependence for the splitting is observed. The multiplicity dependence on ratios of $K^-/π^-$, $K^+/π^+$, $\overline{p}/π^-$, $p/π^+$ and $Λ/K^{0}_{s}$ in mid-rapidity in p+p collisions is found following the similar tendency as that in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV from RHIC, which heralds the similar underlying initial production mechanisms despite the differences in the initial colliding systems.

Covariance Function Pre-Training with m-Kernels for Accelerated Bayesian Optimisation

The paper presents a novel approach to direct covariance function learning for Bayesian optimisation, with particular emphasis on experimental design problems where an existing corpus of condensed knowledge is present. The method presented borrows techniques from reproducing kernel Banach space theory (specifically m-kernels) and leverages them to convert (or re-weight) existing covariance functions into new, problem-specific covariance functions. The key advantage of this approach is that rather than relying on the user to manually select (with some hyperparameter tuning and experimentation) an appropriate covariance function it constructs the covariance function to specifically match the problem at hand. The technique is demonstrated on two real-world problems - specifically alloy design and short-polymer fibre manufacturing - as well as a selected test function.

Optimal Hybrid Full-Duplex/Half-Duplex Scheme for Buffer Aided Relay Systems

Full-duplex (FD) communication has received great interest in recent years due to the potential of doubling the spectral efficiency. However, how to alleviate the detrimental effects of the residual self-interference (RSI) incurred by the FD mode is still a challenging problem. In this paper, focusing on the statistical throughput maximization, we propose an optimal hybrid FD/half-duplex (HD) scheme for the one-way FD buffer aided relay system. To solve this problem, we divide the system into four different transmission modes and formulate the problem as a binary integer programming problem. By relaxing the binary variables to be continuous ones, we solve the problem using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimal conditions. We obtain the selection probability of each mode based on the instantaneous channel outage states. The proposed scheme not only achieves the optimal FD or HD mode selection, but also realizes adaptive source-to-relay or relay-to-destination link selection. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme offers 95% maximum gain over the HD counterparts.

Pose-Robust Face Recognition via Deep Residual Equivariant Mapping

Face recognition achieves exceptional success thanks to the emergence of deep learning. However, many contemporary face recognition models still perform relatively poor in processing profile faces compared to frontal faces. A key reason is that the number of frontal and profile training faces are highly imbalanced - there are extensively more frontal training samples compared to profile ones. In addition, it is intrinsically hard to learn a deep representation that is geometrically invariant to large pose variations. In this study, we hypothesize that there is an inherent mapping between frontal and profile faces, and consequently, their discrepancy in the deep representation space can be bridged by an equivariant mapping. To exploit this mapping, we formulate a novel Deep Residual EquivAriant Mapping (DREAM) block, which is capable of adaptively adding residuals to the input deep representation to transform a profile face representation to a canonical pose that simplifies recognition. The DREAM block consistently enhances the performance of profile face recognition for many strong deep networks, including ResNet models, without deliberately augmenting training data of profile faces. The block is easy to use, light-weight, and can be implemented with a negligible computational overhead.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Star formation cessation in low-redshift galaxies I. Dependence on stellar mass and structural properties

We investigate radial gradients in the recent star formation history (SFH) using 1917 galaxies with $0.01<z<0.14$ and integral-field spectroscopy from the ongoing MaNGA survey. For each galaxy, we obtain two-dimensional maps and radial profiles for three spectroscopically-measured parameters that are sensitive to the recent SFH: D$_n$(4000) (the 4000Å break), EW(H$δ_A$) (equivalent width of the H$δ$ absorption line), and EW(H$α$) (equivalent width of the H$α$ emission line). We find the majority of the spaxels in these galaxies are consistent with models with continuously declining star formation rate, indicating that starbursts occur rarely in local galaxies. We classify the galaxies into three classes: fully star-forming (SF), partly quenched (PQ) and totally quenched (TQ), according to the fraction of quenched area within 1.5 times the effective radius, $f_Q(1.5R_e)$. We find that galaxies less massive than $10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$ present at most weak radial gradients in all the diagnostic parameters. In contrast, galaxies with stellar mass above $10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$ present significant gradients in all the three diagnostic parameters if classified as SF or PQ, but show weak gradients in D$_n$(4000) and EW(H$δ_A$) and no gradients in EW(H$α$) if in the TQ class. This implies the existence of a critical stellar mass, at $\sim10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$, above which the star formation in a galaxy gets shutdown from the inside out. Galaxies tend to evolve synchronously from inner to outer regions before their mass reaches the critical value. We have further divided the sample at fixed mass by both bulge-to-total luminosity ratio and morphological type, finding that our conclusions hold regardless of these factors: it appears that the presence of a central dense object is not a driving parameter, but rather a byproduct of the star formation cessation process.

Optimal Multi-User Scheduling of Buffer-Aided Relay Systems

Multi-User scheduling is a challenging problem under the relaying scenarios. Traditional schemes, which are based on the instantaneous signal-to-interference-plus-noises ratios (SINRs), cannot solve the inherent disparities of the qualities between different links. Hence, the system performance is always limited by the weaker links. In this paper, from the whole system throughput view, we propose an optimal multi-user scheduling scheme for the multi-user full-duplex (FD) buffer aided relay systems. We first formulate the throughput maximization problem. Then, according to the characteristics of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, we obtain the optimal decision functions and the optimal weighted factors of different links of the proposed scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme not only solves the disparities of the qualities between $S_i$-$R$ and $R$-$D_i$ links, but also that between different $S_{i}$-$R$ or $D_{i}$-$R$ links, which can be used as guidance in the design of the practical systems.

A New Hybrid Half-Duplex/Full-Duplex Relaying System with Antenna Diversity

The hybrid half-duplex/full-duplex (HD/FD) relaying scheme is an effective paradigm to overcome the negative effects of the self-interference incurred by the full-duplex (FD) mode. However, traditional hybrid HD/FD scheme does not consider the diversity gain incurred by the multiple antennas of the FD node when the system works in the HD mode, leading to the waste of the system resources. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid HD/FD relaying scheme, which utilizes both the antennas of the FD relay node for reception and transmission when the system works in the HD mode. With multiple antennas, the maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission is adopted to process the signals at the relay node. Based on this scheme, we derive the exact closed-form system outage probability and conduct various numerical simulations. The results show that the proposed scheme remarkably improves the system outage performance over the traditional scheme, and demonstrate that the proposed scheme can more effectively alleviate the adverse effects of the residual self-interference.
