Rethinking Loss Design for Large-scale 3D Shape Retrieval

Learning discriminative shape representations is a crucial issue for large-scale 3D shape retrieval. In this paper, we propose the Collaborative Inner Product Loss (CIP Loss) to obtain ideal shape embedding that discriminative among different categories and clustered within the same class. Utilizing simple inner product operation, CIP loss explicitly enforces the features of the same class to be clustered in a linear subspace, while inter-class subspaces are constrained to be at least orthogonal. Compared to previous metric loss functions, CIP loss could provide more clear geometric interpretation for the embedding than Euclidean margin, and is easy to implement without normalization operation referring to cosine margin. Moreover, our proposed loss term can combine with other commonly used loss functions and can be easily plugged into existing off-the-shelf architectures. Extensive experiments conducted on the two public 3D object retrieval datasets, ModelNet and ShapeNetCore 55, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal, and our method has achieved state-of-the-art results on both datasets.

Bouncing behavior and dissipative characterization of a chain-filled granular damper

We have experimentally investigated the bouncing behavior and damping performance of a container partially filled with granular chains, namely a chain-filled damper. The motion of the chain-filled damper, recorded by a particle tracing technology, demonstrates that the granular chains can efficiently absorb the collisional energy of the damper. We extract both the restitution coefficient of the first collision and the total flight time to characterize the dissipation ability of the damper. Two containers and three types of granular chains, different in size, stiffness and restitution coefficient, are used to examine the experimental results. We find that the restitution coefficient of the first collision of a single-chain-filled damper can linearly tend to vanish with increasing the chain length and obtain a minimum filling mass required to cease the container at the first collision (no rebound). When the strong impact occurs, the collisional absorption efficiency of a chain-filled damper is superior to a monodisperse-particle-filled damper. Furthermore, the longer the chains are, the better the dissipative effect is.

The expression of ensemble average internal energy in long-range interaction complex system and its statistical physical properties

In this paper, we attempt to derive the expression of ensemble average internal energy in long-range interaction complex system. Further, the Shannon entropy hypothesis is used to derive the probability distribution function of energy. It is worth mentioning that the probability distribution function of energy can be equivalent to the q-Gaussian distribution given by Tsallis based on nonextensive entropy. In order to verify the practical significance of this model, it is applied to the older subject of income system. The classic income distribution is two-stage, the most recognized low-income distribution is the exponential form, and the high-income distribution is the recognized Pareto power law distribution. The probability distribution can explain the entire distribution of United States income data. In addition, the internal energy, entropy and temperature of the United States income system can be calculated, and the economic crisis in the United States in recent years can be presented. It is believed that the model will be further improved and extended to other areas.

Angular Triplet-Center Loss for Multi-view 3D Shape Retrieval

How to obtain the desirable representation of a 3D shape, which is discriminative across categories and polymerized within classes, is a significant challenge in 3D shape retrieval. Most existing 3D shape retrieval methods focus on capturing strong discriminative shape representation with softmax loss for the classification task, while the shape feature learning with metric loss is neglected for 3D shape retrieval. In this paper, we address this problem based on the intuition that the cosine distance of shape embeddings should be close enough within the same class and far away across categories. Since most of 3D shape retrieval tasks use cosine distance of shape features for measuring shape similarity, we propose a novel metric loss named angular triplet-center loss, which directly optimizes the cosine distances between the features. It inherits the triplet-center loss property to achieve larger inter-class distance and smaller intra-class distance simultaneously. Unlike previous metric loss utilized in 3D shape retrieval methods, where Euclidean distance is adopted and the margin design is difficult, the proposed method is more convenient to train feature embeddings and more suitable for 3D shape retrieval. Moreover, the angle margin is adopted to replace the cosine margin in order to provide more explicit discriminative constraints on an embedding space. Extensive experimental results on two popular 3D object retrieval benchmarks, ModelNet40 and ShapeNetCore 55, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed loss, and our method has achieved state-of-the-art results on various 3D shape datasets.

vChain: Enabling Verifiable Boolean Range Queries over Blockchain Databases

Blockchains have recently been under the spotlight due to the boom of cryptocurrencies and decentralized applications. There is an increasing demand for querying the data stored in a blockchain database. To ensure query integrity, the user can maintain the entire blockchain database and query the data locally. However, this approach is not economic, if not infeasible, because of the blockchain's huge data size and considerable maintenance costs. In this paper, we take the first step toward investigating the problem of verifiable query processing over blockchain databases. We propose a novel framework, called vChain, that alleviates the storage and computing costs of the user and employs verifiable queries to guarantee the results' integrity. To support verifiable Boolean range queries, we propose an accumulator-based authenticated data structure that enables dynamic aggregation over arbitrary query attributes. Two new indexes are further developed to aggregate intra-block and inter-block data records for efficient query verification. We also propose an inverted prefix tree structure to accelerate the processing of a large number of subscription queries simultaneously. Security analysis and empirical study validate the robustness and practicality of the proposed techniques.

Learning Discriminative 3D Shape Representations by View Discerning Networks

In view-based 3D shape recognition, extracting discriminative visual representation of 3D shapes from projected images is considered the core problem. Projections with low discriminative ability can adversely influence the final 3D shape representation. Especially under the real situations with background clutter and object occlusion, the adverse effect is even more severe. To resolve this problem, we propose a novel deep neural network, View Discerning Network, which learns to judge the quality of views and adjust their contributions to the representation of shapes. In this network, a Score Generation Unit is devised to evaluate the quality of each projected image with score vectors. These score vectors are used to weight the image features and the weighted features perform much better than original features in 3D shape recognition task. In particular, we introduce two structures of Score Generation Unit, Channel-wise Score Unit and Part-wise Score Unit, to assess the quality of feature maps from different perspectives. Our network aggregates features and scores in an end-to-end framework, so that final shape descriptors are directly obtained from its output. Our experiments on ModelNet and ShapeNet Core55 show that View Discerning Network outperforms the state-of-the-arts in terms of the retrieval task, with excellent robustness against background clutter and object occlusion.

Robustness of Optimal Energy Thresholds in Photon-counting Spectral CT

An important question when developing photon-counting detectors for computed tomography is how to select energy thresholds. In this work thresholds are optimized by maximizing signal-difference-to-noise ratio squared (SDNR2) in an optimally weighted image and signal-to-noise ratio squared (SNR2) in a gadolinium basis image in a silicon-strip detector and a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector, factoring in pileup and imperfect energy response in both detectors. To investigate to what extent one single set of thresholds could be applied in various imaging tasks, the robustness of optimal thresholds with 2 to 8 bins is examined with the variation of phantom thicknesses and target materials. In contrast to previous studies, the optimal threshold locations don't always increase with increasing attenuation if pileup is included. Optimizing the thresholds for a 30 cm phantom yields near-optimal SDNR2 or SNR2 regardless of target tissue types and surrounding attenuation for both detectors. Having more than 3 bins reduces the need for changing the thresholds depending on anatomies and tissues. Using around 6 bins or 8 bins may give near-optimal SDNR2 or SNR2 without generating an unnecessarily large amount of data.

Geo-Social Group Queries with Minimum Acquaintance Constraint

The prosperity of location-based social networking services enables geo-social group queries for group-based activity planning and marketing. This paper proposes a new family of geo-social group queries with minimum acquaintance constraint (GSGQs), which are more appealing than existing geo-social group queries in terms of producing a cohesive group that guarantees the worst-case acquaintance level. GSGQs, also specified with various spatial constraints, are more complex than conventional spatial queries; particularly, those with a strict $k$NN spatial constraint are proved to be NP-hard. For efficient processing of general GSGQ queries on large location-based social networks, we devise two social-aware index structures, namely SaR-tree and SaR*-tree. The latter features a novel clustering technique that considers both spatial and social factors. Based on SaR-tree and SaR*-tree, efficient algorithms are developed to process various GSGQs. Extensive experiments on real-world Gowalla and Dianping datasets show that our proposed methods substantially outperform the baseline algorithms based on R-tree.

On the network analysis of the state space of discrete dynamical systems

This paper discusses the letter entitled "Network analysis of the state space of discrete dynamical systems" by A. Shreim et al. [Physical Review Letters, 98, 198701 (2007)]. We found that some theoretical analyses are wrong and the proposed indicators based on two parameters of the state-mapping network cannot discriminate the dynamical complexity of the discrete dynamical systems composed of a 1-D Cellular Automata.

Segregation patterns in binary mixtures with same layer-thicknesses under vertical vibration

Inspired by the theoretical prediction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3423 (2001)] and the disputed experimental results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 189601(2002), Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 014302 (2003)], we systematically investigate the pattern of binary mixtures consisting of same layer-thickness under vertical vibration. Various kinds of mixtures with different diameters and densities particles are used to observe the separation regime. It is found that these mixtures behave like five kinds of segregation patterns for different driving control parameters, i.e., Brazil nut (BN), reversed Brazil nut (RBN), Mixed states, light-BN (LBN), and light-RBN (LRBN), where the latter two regimes are neither purely segregated nor completely mixed states. Not only that, but LBN (LRBN) is observed to be the transition path from BN (RBN) to Mixed state. Moreover, BN phenomenon takes place in the area of low density ratio and found to be independent of layer structure, while RBN is sensitive to the layer structure and occurs at the large density ratio but lower diameter ratio. Our result may be helpful for the establishment of theory about the segregation and mixing of granular mixtures.

The Sagnac Effect in Optical Lattices with Laser-Assisted Tunneling

We propose a scheme to realize the rotation sensing using optical lattices with laser-assisted tunneling. We demonstrate that the competition between the rotation and the spin-orbit coupling governs the spin-dependent response of the cyclotron dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled bosons. The Sagnac-type cumulative phase can be read out from the envelop of a beat-frequency particle current in the spin-balanced system and enhanced by the cyclotron motion. We also theoretically show that the sensitivity limit of the spin-orbit-coupled system to the rotational motion can reach 7*10^-8 rad s^-1 Hz^1/2.

The internal energy expression of a long-range interaction complex system and its statistical physical properties

Considering the interactions of two arbitrary particles, we obtain an internal energy expression of the complex system having long-range interactions. Based on the postulate of "equal-probability principle" for all microstates, the probability distribution function of the system is derived, and consequently, some main statistical physical properties of the system are revealed. It is important to find that the properties of a long-range interaction system are very closely dependent on the interaction coefficient and particle number.
