Two particle azimuthal harmonics in pA collisions

We compute two-particle production in p+A collisions and extract azimuthal harmonics, using the dilute-dense formalism in the Color Glass Condensate framework. The multiple scatterings of the partons inside the projectile proton on the dense gluons inside the target nucleus are expressed in terms of Wilson lines. They generate interesting correlations, which can be partly responsible for the signals of collectivity measured at RHIC and at the LHC. Most notably, while gluon Wilson loops yield vanishing odd harmonics, quark Wilson loops can generate sizable odd harmonics for two particle correlations. By taking both quark and gluon channels into account, we find that the overall second and third harmonics lie rather close to the recent PHENIX data at RHIC.

Learning Discriminative 3D Shape Representations by View Discerning Networks

In view-based 3D shape recognition, extracting discriminative visual representation of 3D shapes from projected images is considered the core problem. Projections with low discriminative ability can adversely influence the final 3D shape representation. Especially under the real situations with background clutter and object occlusion, the adverse effect is even more severe. To resolve this problem, we propose a novel deep neural network, View Discerning Network, which learns to judge the quality of views and adjust their contributions to the representation of shapes. In this network, a Score Generation Unit is devised to evaluate the quality of each projected image with score vectors. These score vectors are used to weight the image features and the weighted features perform much better than original features in 3D shape recognition task. In particular, we introduce two structures of Score Generation Unit, Channel-wise Score Unit and Part-wise Score Unit, to assess the quality of feature maps from different perspectives. Our network aggregates features and scores in an end-to-end framework, so that final shape descriptors are directly obtained from its output. Our experiments on ModelNet and ShapeNet Core55 show that View Discerning Network outperforms the state-of-the-arts in terms of the retrieval task, with excellent robustness against background clutter and object occlusion.

Electron and hole contributions to normal-state transport in the superconducting system Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te

Indium-doped SnTe has been of interest because the system can exhibit both topological surface states and bulk superconductivity. While the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature is established, the character of the electronic states induced by indium doping remains poorly understood. We report a study of magneto-transport in a series of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te single crystals with $0.1\le x \le 0.45$. From measurements of the Hall effect, we find that the dominant carrier type changes from hole-like to electron-like at $x\sim0.25$; one would expect electron-like carriers if the In ions have a valence of $+3$. For single crystals with $x = 0.45$, corresponding to the highest superconducting transition temperature, pronounced Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed in the normal state. In measurements of magnetoresistance, we find evidence for weak anti-localization (WAL). We attribute both the quantum oscillations and the WAL to bulk Dirac-like hole pockets, previously observed in photoemission studies, which coexist with the dominant electron-like carriers.

An Endpoint Version of Uniform Sobolev Inequalities

We prove an endpoint version of the uniform Sobolev inequalities in Kenig-Ruiz-Sogge [8]. It was known that strong type inequalities no longer hold at the endpoints; however, we show that restricted weak type inequalities hold there, which imply the earlier classical result by real interpolation. The key ingredient in our proof is a type of interpolation first introduced by Bourgain [2]. We also prove restricted weak type Stein-Tomas restriction inequalities on some parts of the boundary of a pentagon, which completely characterizes the range of exponents for which the inequalities hold.

Active Mini-Batch Sampling using Repulsive Point Processes

The convergence speed of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) can be improved by actively selecting mini-batches. We explore sampling schemes where similar data points are less likely to be selected in the same mini-batch. In particular, we prove that such repulsive sampling schemes lowers the variance of the gradient estimator. This generalizes recent work on using Determinantal Point Processes (DPPs) for mini-batch diversification (Zhang et al., 2017) to the broader class of repulsive point processes. We first show that the phenomenon of variance reduction by diversified sampling generalizes in particular to non-stationary point processes. We then show that other point processes may be computationally much more efficient than DPPs. In particular, we propose and investigate Poisson Disk sampling---frequently encountered in the computer graphics community---for this task. We show empirically that our approach improves over standard SGD both in terms of convergence speed as well as final model performance.

Dressing the Dressing Chain

The dressing chain is derived by applying Darboux transformations to the spectral problem of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. It is also an auto-Bäcklund transformation for the modified KdV equation. We show that by applying Darboux transformations to the spectral problem of the dressing chain one obtains the lattice KdV equation as the dressing chain of the dressing chain and, that the lattice KdV equation also arises as an auto-Bäcklund transformation for a modified dressing chain. In analogy to the results obtained for the dressing chain (Veselov and Shabat proved complete integrability for odd dimensional periodic reductions), we study the $(0,n)$-periodic reduction of the lattice KdV equation, which is a two-valued correspondence. We provide explicit formulas for its branches and establish complete integrability for odd $n$.

Towards the manipulation of topological states of matter: A perspective from electron transport

The introduction of topological invariants, ranging from insulators to metals, has provided new insights into the traditional classification of electronic states in condensed matter physics. A sudden change in the topological invariant at the boundary of a topological nontrivial system leads to the formation of exotic surface states that are dramatically different from its bulk. In recent years, significant advancements in the exploration of the physical properties of these topological systems and regarding device research related to spintronics and quantum computation have been made. Here, we review the progress of the characterization and manipulation of topological phases from the electron transport perspective and also the intriguing chiral/Majorana states that stem from them. We then discuss the future directions of research into these topological states and their potential applications.

Chiral Landau levels in Weyl semimetal NbAs with multiple topological carriers

Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, we report the magneto-optical study of Landau quantization in Weyl semimetal NbAs. High magnetic fields drive the system towards the quantum limit which leads to the observation of zeroth chiral Landau levels in two inequivalent Weyl nodes. As compared to other Landau levels, the zeroth chiral Landau level exhibits a distinct linear dispersion in z momentum direction and allows the optical transitions without the limitation of zero z momentum or square root of magnetic field evolution. The magnetic field dependence of the zeroth Landau levels further verifies the predicted particle-hole asymmetry of the Weyl cones. Meanwhile, the optical transitions from the normal Landau levels exhibit the coexistence of multiple carriers including an unexpected massive Dirac fermion, pointing to a more complex topological nature in inversion-symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals. Our results provide insights into the Landau quantization of Weyl fermions and demonstrate an effective tool for studying complex topological systems.

Non-rigid image registration using spatially region-weighted correlation ratio and GPU-acceleration

Objective: Non-rigid image registration with high accuracy and efficiency is still a challenging task for medical image analysis. In this work, we present the spatially region-weighted correlation ratio (SRWCR) as a novel similarity measure to improve the registration performance. Methods: SRWCR is rigorously deduced from a three-dimension joint probability density function combining the intensity channels with an extra spatial information channel. SRWCR estimates the optimal functional dependence between the intensities for each spatial bin, in which the spatial distribution modeled by a cubic B-spline function is used to differentiate the contribution of voxels. We also analytically derive the gradient of SRWCR with respect to the transformation parameters and optimize it using a quasi-Newton approach. Furthermore, we propose a GPU-based parallel mechanism to accelerate the computation of SRWCR and its derivatives. Results: The experiments on synthetic images, public 4-D thoracic computed tomography (CT) dataset, retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) data, and clinical CT and positron emission tomography (PET) images confirm that SRWCR significantly outperforms some state-of-the-art techniques such as spatially encoded mutual information and Robust PaTch-based cOrrelation Ration. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the advantages of SRWCR in tackling the practical difficulties due to distinct intensity changes, serious speckle noise, or different imaging modalities. Significance: The proposed registration framework might be more reliable to correct the non-rigid deformations and more potential for clinical applications.

Interleaved Training and Training-Based Transmission Design for Hybrid Massive Antenna Downlink

In this paper, we study the beam-based training design jointly with the transmission design for hybrid massive antenna single-user (SU) and multiple-user (MU) systems where outage probability is adopted as the performance measure. For SU systems, we propose an interleaved training design to concatenate the feedback and training procedures, thus making the training length adaptive to the channel realization. Exact analytical expressions are derived for the average training length and the outage probability of the proposed interleaved training. For MU systems, we propose a joint design for the beam-based interleaved training, beam assignment, and MU data transmissions. Two solutions for the beam assignment are provided with different complexity-performance tradeoff. Analytical results and simulations show that for both SU and MU systems, the proposed joint training and transmission designs achieve the same outage performance as the traditional full-training scheme but with significant saving in the training overhead.

Discrete Crum's Theorems and Integrable Lattice Equations

In this paper, we develop discrete versions of Darboux transformations and Crum's theorems for two second order difference equations. The difference equations are discretised versions (using Darboux transformations) of the spectral problems of the KdV quation, and of the modified KdV equation or sine-Gordon equation. Considering the discrete dynamics created by Darboux transformations for the difference equations, one obtains the lattice potential KdV equation, the lattice potential modified KdV equation and the lattice Schwarzian KdV equation, that are prototypes of integrable lattice equations. It turns out that, along the discretisation processes using Darboux transformations, two families of integrable systems (the KdV family, and the modified KdV or sine-Gordon family), including their continuous, semi-discrete and lattice versions, are explicitly constructed. As direct applications of the discrete Crum's theorems, multi-soliton solutions of the lattice equations are obtained.

Signal Processing for MIMO-NOMA: Present and Future Challenges

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the newest member of the multiple access family, is envisioned to be an essential component of 5G mobile networks. The combination of NOMA and multi-antenna multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technologies exhibits a significant potential in improving spectral efficiency and providing better wireless services to more users. In this article, we introduce the basic concepts of MIMO-NOMA and summarize the key technical problems in MIMO-NOMA systems. Then, we explore the problem formulation, beamforming, user clustering, and power allocation of single/multi-cluster MIMO-NOMA in the literature along with their limitations. Furthermore, we point out an important issue of the stability of successive interference cancellation (SIC) that arises using achievable rates as performance metrics in practical NOMA/MIMO-NOMA systems. Finally, we discuss incorporating NOMA with massive/millimeter wave MIMO, and identify the main challenges and possible future research directions in this area.

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Approach for Cost- and Energy-Aware Multi-Flow Mobile Data Offloading

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on to which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues such as different applications' deadlines, monetary cost and energy consumption, how the MU decides whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN is an important issue. Previous studies assume the MU's mobility pattern is known in advance, which is not always true. In this paper, we study the MU's policy to minimize his monetary cost and energy consumption without known MU mobility pattern. We propose to use a kind of reinforcement learning technique called deep Q-network (DQN) for MU to learn the optimal offloading policy from past experiences. In the proposed DQN based offloading algorithm, MU's mobility pattern is no longer needed. Furthermore, MU's state of remaining data is directly fed into the convolution neural network in DQN without discretization. Therefore, not only does the discretization error present in previous work disappear, but also it makes the proposed algorithm has the ability to generalize the past experiences, which is especially effective when the number of states is large. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

Cost- and Energy-Aware Multi-Flow Mobile Data Offloading Using Markov Decision Process

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, mobile network operators are trying to expand wireless network capacity by deploying wireless local area network (LAN) hotspots on which they can offload their mobile traffic. However, these network-centric methods usually do not fulfill the interests of mobile users (MUs). Taking into consideration many issues, MUs should be able to decide whether to offload their traffic to a complementary wireless LAN. Our previous work studied single-flow wireless LAN offloading from a MU's perspective by considering delay-tolerance of traffic, monetary cost and energy consumption. In this paper, we study the multi-flow mobile data offloading problem from a MU's perspective in which a MU has multiple applications to download data simultaneously from remote servers, and different applications' data have different deadlines. We formulate the wireless LAN offloading problem as a finite-horizon discrete-time Markov decision process (MDP) and establish an optimal policy by a dynamic programming based algorithm. Since the time complexity of the dynamic programming based offloading algorithm is still high, we propose a low time complexity heuristic offloading algorithm with performance sacrifice. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate our proposed offloading algorithms.

Causal Feature Selection for Individual Characteristics Prediction

People can be characterized by their demographic information and personality traits. Characterizing people accurately can help predict their preferences, and aid recommendations and advertising. A growing number of studies infer people's characteristics from behavioral data. However, context factors make behavioral data noisy, making these data harder to use for predictive analytics. In this paper, we demonstrate how to employ causal identification on feature selection and how to predict individuals' characteristics based on these selected features. We use visitors' choice data from a large theme park, combined with personality measurements, to investigate the causal relationship between visitors' characteristics and their choices in the park. We demonstrate the benefit of feature selection based on causal identification in a supervised prediction task for individual characteristics. Based on our evaluation, our models that trained with features selected based on causal identification outperformed existing methods.

Perturbative Black Box Variational Inference

Black box variational inference (BBVI) with reparameterization gradients triggered the exploration of divergence measures other than the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence, such as alpha divergences. In this paper, we view BBVI with generalized divergences as a form of estimating the marginal likelihood via biased importance sampling. The choice of divergence determines a bias-variance trade-off between the tightness of a bound on the marginal likelihood (low bias) and the variance of its gradient estimators. Drawing on variational perturbation theory of statistical physics, we use these insights to construct a family of new variational bounds. Enumerated by an odd integer order $K$, this family captures the standard KL bound for $K=1$, and converges to the exact marginal likelihood as $K\to\infty$. Compared to alpha-divergences, our reparameterization gradients have a lower variance. We show in experiments on Gaussian Processes and Variational Autoencoders that the new bounds are more mass covering, and that the resulting posterior covariances are closer to the true posterior and lead to higher likelihoods on held-out data.

Characterization and Improvement of the Thermal Stability of TES Bolometers

We study the mechanism of instability in transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers used for ground based observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at 270GHz. The instability limits the range of useful operating resistances of the TES down to $\approx$ 50% of $R_n$, and due to variations in detector properties and optical loading within a column of multiplexed detectors, limits the effective on sky yield. Using measurements of the electrical impedance of the detectors, we show the instability is due to the increased bolometer leg $G$ for higher-frequency detection inducing decoupling of the palladium-gold heat capacity from the thermistor. We demonstrate experimentally that the limiting thermal resistance is due to the small cross sectional area of the silicon nitride bolometer island, and so is easily fixed by layering palladium-gold over an oxide protected TES. The resulting detectors can be biased down to a resistance $\approx$10% of $R_n$.

A Review of Smart Materials in Tactile Actuators for Information Delivery

As the largest organ in the human body, the skin provides the important sensory channel for humans to receive external stimulations based on touch. By the information perceived through touch, people can feel and guess the properties of objects, like weight, temperature, textures, and motion, etc. In fact, those properties are nerve stimuli to our brain received by different kinds of receptors in the skin. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal stimuli can stimulate these receptors and cause different information to be conveyed through the nerves. Technologies for actuators to provide mechanical, electrical or thermal stimuli have been developed. These include static or vibrational actuation, electrostatic stimulation, focused ultrasound, and more. Smart materials, such as piezoelectric materials, carbon nanotubes, and shape memory alloys, play important roles in providing actuation for tactile sensation. This paper aims to review the background biological knowledge of human tactile sensing, to give an understanding of how we sense and interact with the world through the sense of touch, as well as the conventional and state-of-the-art technologies of tactile actuators for tactile feedback delivery.
