Extraction of a Weak Phase from $B \to D^{(*)} π$

To observe CP-violating asymmetries through the interference of a weaker amplitude with a stronger one in $\bo \to D^{(*)} π$ and $\ob \to D^{(*)} π$ decays, one must collect enough events that the intensity associated with the weaker amplitude would be statistically significant. We show that provided the weaker amplitude is measured separately in $B^\pm \to D^{(*)\pm} π^0$ decays, the time-integrated approach requires around $2.5 \cdot 10^8 \ B \bar B$ pairs for measurements of the weak phase $\sin(2β+ γ)$ with an uncertainty of $0.05$ or better. We also determine the optimal conditions for precise $2β+ γ$ measurements and discuss the possibilities for resolving a discrete ambiguity.

Resumming the color-octet contribution to radiative Upsilon decay

At the upper endpoint of the photon energy spectrum in Upsilon -> X gamma, the standard NRQCD power counting breaks down and the OPE gives rise to color-octet structure functions. Furthermore, in this kinematic regime large Sudakov logarithms appear in the octet Wilson coefficients. The endpoint spectrum can be treated consistently within the framework of a recently developed effective field theory of collinear and soft particles. Here we show that within this approach the octet structure functions arise naturally and that Sudakov logarithms can be summed using the renormalization group equations. We derive an expression for the resummed energy spectrum and, using a model lightcone structure function, investigate the phenomenological importance of the resummation.

CP Violation for Leptons at Higher Energy Scales

The phase convention independent measure of CP violation for three generations of leptons is evaluated at different energy scales. Unlike in the quark sector, this quantity does not vary much between the weak and the grand unification scales. The behavior of the measure of CP violation in the Standard Model is found to be different from that in the extensions of the Standard Model.

The sign of the day-night asymmetry for solar neutrinos

A qualitative understanding of the day-night asymmetry for solar neutrinos is provided. The greater night flux in nu_e is seen to be a consequence of the fact that the matter effect in the sun and that in the earth have the same sign. It is shown in the adiabatic approximation for the sun that for all values of the mixing angle theta_V between 0 and pi/2, the night flux of neutrinos is greater than the day flux. Only for small values of theta_V where the adiabatic approximation badly fails does the sign of the day-night asymmetry reverse.

Bounds on Heavy-to-Heavy Weak Decay Form Factors

We provide upper and lower bounds on the semileptonic weak decay form factors for $B \to D^(*)$ and $Λ_b \to Λ_c$ decays by utilizing inclusive heavy quark effective theory sum rules. These bounds are calculated to second order in $Λ_{QCD}/m_Q$ and first order in $α_s$. The $O(α_s^2 β_0)$ corrections to the bounds at zero recoil are also presented.

Remarks on Form Factor Bounds

Improved model independent upper bounds on the weak transition form factors are derived using inclusive sum rules. Comparison of the new bounds with the old ones is made for the form factors h_{A_1} and h_V in B -> D* decays.

Using the value of beta to help determine gamma from B decays

It has been pointed out by Gronau and Rosner that the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle could be determined by combining future results on B_s and B_d decays to K pi. Here we show that it is important to include in the analysis the information on the phase beta which will be determined in the near future. Omitting this information could lead to an error as large as 8 degrees in gamma.

K_{L,S} \to ππν\barν Decays Within and Beyond the Standard Model

The decays K_{L,S} -> π^o π^o ν\barν and K_{L,S} -> π^+ π^- ν\barν involve the weak transition from a strange to a non-strange quark. Although they have considerably smaller branching ratios than those for the corresponding rare processes involving single pions, some may be more distinguishable experimentally from background processes and thus could provide another probe of the s -> d ν\barν transition. Using recent knowledge of the CKM matrix elements and measurements of related processes, we give improved predictions for their branching ratios both within and beyond the Standard Model.

Angular Distribution of Charming B -> V V Decays and Time Evolution Effects

Angular distributions of a B meson decaying into two vector mesons are discussed with emphasis on time evolution effects on the complete set of amplitude bilinears. Time integrated quantities are suggested to observe substantial CP violation in decays with charm quarks in the final state particles. Relations among the nine observables at $t=0$ are found to be useful for a consistency check of experimentally extracted quantities. Numerical estimates of the nine observables are made using form factor models and the assumption of the factorization hypothesis. Branching ratio asymmetries for B_u^+ -> D^{*+} \bar D^{*0} and B_d -> D^{*+} D^{*-} can be as large as -3% and -4%, respectively.

Observables in the Decays of B to Two Vector Mesons

In general there are nine observables in the decay of a B meson to two vector mesons defined in terms of polarization correlations of these mesons. Only six of these can be detected via the subsequent decay angular distributions because of parity conservation in those decays. The remaining three require the measurement of the spin polarization of one of the decay products.

Bounds on Heavy-to-Heavy Baryonic Form Factors

Upper and lower bounds are established on the Lambda_b -> Lambda_c semileptonic decay form factors by utilizing inclusive heavy-quark-effective-theory sum rules. These bounds are calculated to leading order in Lambda_QCD/m_Q and alpha_s. The O(alpha_s^2 beta_0) corrections to the bounds at zero recoil are also presented. Several form factor models used in the literature are compared with our bounds.

Bounds on Heavy-to-Heavy Mesonic Form Factors

We provide upper and lower bounds on the form factors for B -> D, D^* by utilizing inclusive heavy quark effective theory sum rules. These bounds are calculated to leading order in Lambda_QCD/m_Q and alpha_s. The O(alpha_s^2 beta_0) corrections to the bounds at zero recoil are also presented. We compare our bounds with some of the form factor models used in the literature. All the models we investigated failed to fall within the bounds for the combination of form factors (omega^2 - 1)/(4 omega)|omega h_{A2}+h_{A3}|^2.

Charmless Hardronic Decays $B_u \to V V $: Angular Distributions, Direct CP Violation and Determination of the Unitary Triangle

Two-body charmless nonleptonic decays of $B_u \to V V$ are studied within the generalized factorization approach using a recent calculation of the effective Wilson coefficients $c^{eff}_i$, which are not only renormalization-scale and -scheme independent but also gauge invariant and infrared finite. After making a universal ansatz for the nonfactorizable contributions, we parametrize these effects in terms of $N_c^{eff}(LL)$ and $N_c^{eff}(LR)$, the effective numbers of colors arising from $(V-A)(V-A)$ and $(V-A)(V+A)$ four-quark operators, respectively. Three different schemes for these contributions are considered: (i) the naive factorization, (ii) the large-N_c improved factorization, and (iii) our preferred choice: $(N_c^{eff}(LL), N_c^{eff}(RR))=(2,5)$. We present the full angular distribution of all charmless $B_u \to V V$ decays in both transversity and helicity frames.Direct CP violation in these normalized angular correlation coefficients is not negligible in $B^-_u \to K^{*-} ρ^0, K^{*-} ω$, and direct CP violation in the partial rate difference for $B^-_u \to K^{*-} ω, K^{*-} ρ$ and $ρ^- ω$ can be as large as 45%, 25%, -10%, respectively. Due to the sizable QCD penguin contributions in $ρ^- ω$, the determination of the unitary triangle $α$ via this decay mode is more promising than via $ρ^- ρ^0$. It is also encouraging to determine the unitary triangle $γ$ through $B^-_u \to K^{*-} ρ$ because of $N_c$-insensitivity and the not-so-small tree contribution. The impacts of a negative $ρ$ on the branching ratios and CP violation are studied. We also comment on the theoretical uncertainties and their possible impacts.
