Global fits in the Georgi-Machacek model

Off the beaten track of scalar singlet and doublet extensions of the Standard Model, triplets combine an interesting LHC phenomenology with an explanation for neutrino masses. The Georgi-Machacek model falls into this category, but it has never been fully explored in a global fit. We use the {\texttt{HEPfit}} package to combine recent experimental Higgs data with theoretical constraints and obtain strong limits on the mixing angles and mass differences between the heavy new scalars as well as their decay widths. We also find that the current signal strength measurements allow for a Higgs to vector boson coupling with an opposite sign to the Standard Model, but this possibility can be ruled out by the lack of direct evidence for heavy Higgs states. For these hypothetical particles, we identify the dominant decay channels and extract bounds on their branching ratios from the global fit, which can be used to single out the decay patterns relevant for the experimental searches.

Models with higher weak-isospin Higgs multiplets

In order for scale factors $κ_{V}^{}~(V=W,Z)$ of the 125-GeV Higgs boson couplings to have the possibilities of being greater than unity and $κ_{W}^{} \neq κ_{Z}^{}$ while keeping the electroweak $ρ$ parameter unity at tree level, the Higgs sector must be extended with at least two exotic $SU(2)_L$ multiplets in addition to the doublet Higgs field in the Standard Model. By the requirements of perturbative unitarity, no Landau pole in gauge couplings, and no accidental global $U(1)$ symmetry, we exhaust all the possible combinations of two exotic Higgs fields and derive general formulas for $κ_{V}^{}$. We find that the current central values $κ_W^{}=1.12$ and $κ_Z = 0.99$ reported by CMS can be accommodated in the model with a complex and a real Higgs triplets as the simplest example.

Charged scalars confronting neutrino mass and muon g-2 anomaly

The present work introduces two possible extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector. In the first case, the Zee-Babu type model for the generation of neutrino mass is augmented with a scalar triplet and additional singly charged scalar singlets. The second scenario, on the other hand, generalizes the Type-II seesaw model by replicating the number of the scalar triplets. A $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry is imposed in case of both the scenarios, but, allowed to be violated by terms of mass dimension two and three for generating neutrino masses and mixings. We examine how the models so introduced can explain the experimental observation on the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We estimate the two-loop contribution to neutrino mass induced by the scalar triplet, in addition to what comes from the doubly charged singlet in the usual Zee-Babu framework, in the first model. On the other hand, the neutrino mass arises in the usual Type-II fashion in the second model. In addition, the role of the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry in suppressing lepton flavor violation is also elucidated.

Muon g-2 and rare top decays in up-type specific variant axion models

The invisible variant axion models (VAM's) offer a very attractive solution for the strong CP problem without the domain wall problem. We consider the up-type specific variant axion models and examine their compatibility with the muon $g-2$ anomaly and the constraints from lepton flavor universality, several flavor observables, and top quark measurements. We find that the combined $χ^2$ fit favors the parameters $m_A\sim 15$ GeV and $\tanβ\sim 40$, the same as the type-X 2HDM. Moreover, we find that there are no conflict with any flavor observables as long as the mixing angle $ρ_u$ is sufficiently small. In particular, a small nonzero mixing angle $ρ_u \sim π/100$ is slightly favored by the observed $B_s \to μμ$ branching ratio. The up-specific VAM predicts the flavor-violating top rare decay $t\to uA$ followed by $A \to ττ$, which would provide a smoking gun signature at the LHC. We show that current searches of $A$ already impose some constraints on the parameter space but are not sensitive to the most interesting light $m_A$ region. We propose an efficient search strategy that employs di-tau tagging using jet substructure information, and demonstrate that it can enhance the sensitivity on $BR(t \to uA)$, especially in the light $m_A$ region. This model also predicts the flavor-violating decay of heavy Higgs bosons, such as $H \to t u$, that would suppress the $H \to ττ/μμ$ decays. We also examine the up-specific VAM with the muon-specific lepton sector and the down-type specific VAM's as interesting alternative scenarios.

Model with a gauged lepton flavor SU(2) symmetry

We propose a model having a gauged $SU(2)$ symmetry associated with the second and third generations of leptons, dubbed $SU(2)_{μτ}$, of which $U(1)_{L_μ-L_τ}$ is an Abelian subgroup. In addition to the Standard Model fields, we introduce two types of scalar fields. One exotic scalar field is an $SU(2)_{μτ}$ doublet and SM singlet that develops a nonzero vacuum expectation value at presumably multi-TeV scale to completely break the $SU(2)_{μτ}$ symmetry, rendering three massive gauge bosons. At the same time, the other exotic scalar field, carrying electroweak as well as $SU(2)_{μτ}$ charges, is induced to have a nonzero vacuum expectation value as well and breaks mass degeneracy between the muon and tau. We examine how the new particles in the model contribute to the muon anomalous magnetic moment in the parameter space compliant with the Michel decays of tau.

Measuring the ratio of $HWW$ and $HZZ$ couplings through $W^+W^-H$ production

For a generic Higgs boson, measuring the relative sign and magnitude of its couplings with the $W$ and $Z$ bosons is essential in determining its origin. Such a test is also indispensable for the 125-GeV Higgs boson. We propose that the ratio of the $HWW$ and $HZZ$ couplings $λ_{WZ}$ can be directly determined through the $W^+W^-H$ production, where $H$ denotes a generic Higgs boson, owing to the tree-level interference effect. While this is impractical at the LHC due to the limited sensitivity, it can be done at future $e^+e^-$ colliders, such as a 500-GeV ILC with the beam polarization $P(e^-,e^+)=(-0.8,+0.3)$ in the $jj\ell^{\pm}bb$ and $\ell^{\pm}\ell^{\pm}\ell^{\mp}jj$ channels. The discovery potential of a general ratio and the power to discriminate it from the SM value are studied in detail. Combining the cross section of $e^+e^-\to W^+ W^- H$ with the measurements of $HZZ$ coupling at the HL-LHC, one can further improve the sensitivity of $λ_{WZ}$.

One-loop renormalized Higgs vertices in Georgi-Machacek model

We compute renormalized vertices of the 125 GeV Higgs boson $h$ with the weak gauge bosons ($hVV$), fermions ($hf\bar{f}$) and itself ($hhh$) in the Georgi-Machacek model at one-loop level. The renormalization is performed based on the on-shell scheme with the use of the minimal subtraction scheme only for the $hhh$ vertex. We explicitly show the gauge dependence in the counterterms of the scalar mixing parameters in the general $R_ξ$ gauge, and that the dependence can be removed by using the pinch technique in physical scattering processes. We then discuss the possible allowed deviations in these one-loop corrected Higgs couplings from the standard model predictions by scanning model parameters under the constraints of perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability as well as those from experimental data.

Explaining the DAMPE $e^+ e^-$ excess using the Higgs triplet model with a vector dark matter

We explain the $e^+ e^-$ excess observed by the DAMPE Collaboration using a dark matter model based upon the Higgs triplet model and an additional hidden $SU(2)_X$ gauge symmetry. Two of the $SU(2)_X$ gauge bosons are stable due to a residual discrete symmetry and serve as the dark matter candidate. We search the parameter space for regions that can explain the observed relic abundance, and compute the flux of $e^+ e^-$ coming from a nearby dark matter subhalo. With the inclusion of background cosmic rays, we show that the model can render a good fit to the entire energy spectrum covering the AMS-02, Fermi-LAT and DAMPE data.

$R_{K^{(*)}}$ and related $b\to s\ell\bar\ell$ anomalies in minimal flavor violation framework with $Z'$ boson

A recent LHCb measurement of the ratio $R_{K^*}$ of $B\to K^*μ\barμ$ to $B\to K^*e\bar e$ branching fractions has produced results in mild tension with the standard model (SM). This adds to the known anomalies also induced by the $b\to s\ell\bar\ell$ transitions, resulting in a confidence level now as high as 4$σ$. We analyze whether the parameter space preferred by all the $b\to s\ell\bar\ell$ anomalies is compatible with a heavy $Z'$ boson assumed to have nonuniversal couplings to SM fermions dictated by the principle of minimal flavor violation (MFV). We deal with the MFV couplings of the $Z'$ to leptons in the context of the type-I seesaw scenario for generating neutrino masses. The flavor-violating $Z'$ interactions are subject to stringent constraints from other processes, especially $B$-$\bar B$ mixing, charged lepton decays $\ell_i\to\ell_j\ell_k\bar\ell_l$ occurring at tree level, and the loop induced $μ\to eγ$. We perform scans for parameter regions allowed by various data and predict the ranges for a number of observables. Some of the predictions, such as the branching fractions of lepton-flavor violating $τ\to3μ$, $B\to K eμ$, $K_L\to eμ$, and $Z\to\ell\ell'$, are not far below their experimental bounds and therefore could be probed by searches in the near future. The viable parameter space depends strongly on the neutrino mass hierarchy, with a preference for the inverted one.

Standard Model with a Complex Scalar Singlet: Cosmological Implications and Theoretical Considerations

We analyze the theoretical and phenomenological considerations for the electroweak phase transition and dark matter in an extension of the Standard Model with a complex scalar singlet (cxSM). In contrast with earlier studies, we use a renormalization group improved scalar potential and treat its thermal history in a gauge invariant manner. We find that the parameter space consistent with a strong first order electroweak phase transition (SFOEWPT) and present dark matter phenomenological constraints is significantly restricted compared to results of a conventional, gauge non-invariant analysis. In the simplest variant of the cxSM, recent LUX data and a SFOEWPT require a dark matter mass close to half the mass of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson. We also comment on various caveats regarding the perturbative treatment of the phase transition dynamics.

On gauge dependence of gravitational waves from a first-order phase transition in classical scale-invariant $U(1)'$ models

We study gauge dependence of gravitational waves produced from a first-order phase transition in classical scale-invariant $U(1)'$ models. Accidental gauge independence of the one-loop effective potential in this class of models is spoiled by including thermal resummation. The gauge artifact in the resummed effective potential propagates to the gravitational wave spectrum and results in one order of magnitude uncertainties in the prediction under a specific gauge choice.

Prediction of the $CP$ asymmetry $C_{00}$ in $B^0 \to D^0\overline{D^0}$ decay

Of all $B \to D \overline{D}$ decays, the $B^0 \to D^0 \overline{D^0}$ decay has the smallest observed branching ratio as it takes place primarily via the suppressed $W$-exchange diagram. The $CP$ asymmetry for this mode is yet to be measured experimentally. By exploiting the relationship among the decay amplitudes of $B \to D\overline{D}$ decays (using isospin and topological amplitudes) we are able to relate the $CP$ asymmetries and branching ratios by a simple expression. This enables us to predict the $CP$ asymmetry $C_{00}$ in $B^0 \to D^0 \overline{D^0}$. While the predicted central values of $C_{00}$ are outside the physically allowed region, they are currently associated with large uncertainties owing to the large errors in the measurements of the $B^0 \to D^0 \overline{D^0}$ branching ratio ($B_{00}$), the other $CP$ asymmetries $C_{+-}$ (of $B^0 \to D^+ D^-$) and $A_{\text{CP}}$ (of $B^+ \to D^+ \overline{D^0}$). With a precise determination of $B_{00}$, $C_{+-}$ and $A_{\text{CP}}$, one can use our analytical result to predict $C_{00}$ with a reduced error and compare it with the experimental measurement when it becomes available. The correlation between $B_{00}$ and $C_{00}$ is an interesting aspect that can be probed in ongoing and future particle physics experiments such as LHCb and Belle II.

Current Status of Top-Specific Variant Axion Model

The invisible variant axion model is very attractive as it is free from the domain wall problem. This model requires at least two Higgs doublets at the electroweak scale, with one Higgs doublet carrying a nonzero Peccei-Quinn (PQ) charge and the other being neutral under the PQ $\text U(1)$ symmetry. We consider a scenario where only the right-handed top quark is charged under the PQ symmetry and couples with the PQ-charged Higgs doublet. As a general prediction of this model, the top quark can decay to the observed standard model-like Higgs boson $h$ and the charm or up quark, $t\to h~ c/u$, which recently exhibit slight excesses at LHC Run-I and Run-II. It will soon be testable at the LHC Run-II. If the rare top decay excess stays at the observed central value, we show that $\tan β\sim 1$ or smaller is preferred by the Higgs data. The chiral nature of the Higgs flavor-changing interaction is a distinctive feature, and can be tested using the angular distribution of the $t \to ch$ decays at the LHC.

Higgs boson pair productions in the Georgi-Machacek model at the LHC

Higgs bosons pair production is well known for its sensitivity to probing the sign and size of Higgs boson self coupling, providing a way to determine whether there is an extended Higgs sector. The Georgi-Machacek (GM) model extends the Standard Model (SM) with an $SU(2)_L$ triplet scalar field that has one real and one complex components. The Higgs self coupling now has a wider range than that in the SM, with even the possibility of a sign flip. The new heavy singlet Higgs boson $H^{0}_{1}$ can contribute to s-channel production of the $hh$ pairs. In this work, we study non-resonant/resonant Higgs boson pair productions $p p \rightarrow hh$ and $p p \rightarrow H^{0}_{1} \rightarrow hh$, focusing exclusively on the contribution of $H^0_1$. We show the sensitivity for Higgs boson pair production searches at the 13-TeV LHC with the luminosities of $3.2,\ 30$ and $100$~fb$^{-1}$.

Radiative corrections to Higgs couplings with weak gauge bosons in custodial multi-Higgs models

We calculate 1-loop radiative corrections to the $hZZ$ and $hWW$ couplings in models with next--to--simplest Higgs sectors satisfying the electroweak $ρ$ parameter equal to 1 at tree level: the Higgs singlet model, the two-Higgs doublet models, and the Georgi-Machacek model. Under theoretical and current experimental constraints, the three models have different correlations between the deviations in the $hZZ$ and $hWW$ couplings from the standard model predictions. In particular, we find for each model predictions with no overlap with the other two models.

Towards gauge unified, supersymmetric hidden strong dynamics

We consider a class of models with extra complex scalars that are charged under both the Standard Model and a hidden strongly coupled $SU(N)_H$ gauge sector, and discuss the scenarios where the new scalars are identified as the messenger fields that mediate the spontaneously broken supersymmetries from the hidden sector to the visible sector. The new scalars are embedded into 5-plets and 10-plets of an $SU(5)_V$ gauge group that potentially unifies the Standard Model gauge groups. The Higgs bosons remain as elementary particles. In the supersymmetrized version of this class of models, vector-like fermions whose left-handed components are superperpartners of the new scalars are introduced. Due to the hidden strong force, the new low-energy scalars hadronize before decaying and thus evade the common direct searches of the supersymmetric squarks. This can be seen as a gauge mediation scenario with the scalar messenger fields forming low-energy bound states. We also discuss the possibility that among the tower of bound states formed under hidden strong dynamics (at least the TeV scale) one of them is the dark matter candidate, as well as the collider signatures (e.g. diphoton, diboson or dijet) of the models that may show up in the near future.

Constraints and Implications on Higgs FCNC Couplings from Precision Measurement of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ Decay

We study constraints and implications of the recent LHCb measurement of ${\cal B}(B_s \to μ^+μ^-)$ for tree-level Higgs-mediated flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions. Combined with experimental data on $B_s$ mass difference $Δm_s$, the $h \to μτ$, and the $h \to τ^+τ^-$ decay branching ratios from the LHC, we find that the Higgs FCNC couplings are severely constrained. The allowed regions for $B_s \to μτ$, $ττ$ and $h \to sb$ decays are obtained. Current data allow large CP violation in the $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ decay. Consequences of the Cheng-Sher ansatz for the Higgs Yukawa couplings are discussed in some detail.

Quantum Numbers of $Ω_c$ States and Other Charmed Baryons

Possible spin-parity quantum numbers for excited charmed baryon resonances are discussed in this work. Our main results are: (i) Among the five newly observed $Ω_c$ states, we have identified $Ω_c(3090)$ and $Ω_c(3119)$ with radially excited $\frac12^+(2S)$ and $\frac32^+(2S)$ states, respectively, and $Ω_c(3000)$ with $\frac12^-(1P)$ and $S=\frac32$. The two states $Ω_c(3050)$ and $Ω_c(3066)$ form a $P$-wave $(\frac32^-,\frac52^-)$ doublet. (ii) The widths of $Ω_c(3066)$ and $Ξ'_c(2930)$ are calculable within the framework of heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. (iii) Since the width of $Ω_{c0}(\frac12^-)$ is of order 410 MeV, not all observed narrow $Ω_c$ baryons can be identified with $1P$ states. (iv) For the antitriplet $Λ_c$ and $Ξ_c$ states, their Regge trajectories for the orbital excitations of $\frac12^-$ and $\frac32^-$ are parallel to each other. Based on this nice property of parallelism, we see that the highest state $Λ_c(2940)$ does not fit if its quantum numbers are $\frac32^-$ as found by LHCb. We suggest that $Λ_c(2940)^+$ is most likely the $\frac12^-(2P)$ state. (v) The charmed baryon $Σ_c(2800)$ cannot be a $\frac12^-$ state; otherwise, its width will be over 400~MeV, too large compared to the measured one. (vi) In the study of Regge trajectories of $Ξ'_c$ states, we find a missing state. It should have quantum numbers $\frac52^-$ with a mass around 2920~MeV.
