Nonlinear dynamics of hot, cold and bald Einstein-Maxwell-scalar black holes in AdS spacetime

We investigate the dynamical transition processes of an Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravitational system between two local ground states and an excited state in the anti-de Sitter spacetime. From the linear perturbation theory, only the excited state possesses a single unstable mode, indicating the dynamical instability. Such an instability is associated with the tachyonic instability due to the presence of an effective potential well near the event horizon. From the nonlinear dynamics simulation, through the scalar field accretion mechanism, the critical phenomena in the transition process of the gravitational system between the two local ground states are revealed. The threshold of the accretion strength indicates the existence of a dynamical barrier in this transition process, which depends on the coupling strength between the scalar and Maxwell fields. On the other hand, for the unstable excited state, there exists a special kind of critical dynamics with a zero threshold for the perturbation strength. The perturbations of different signs push the gravitational system to fall into different local ground states. Interestingly, in an extended parameter space, there exist specific parameters such that the perturbations of non-zero amplitude fail to trigger the single unstable mode of the excited state.

Type I critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

We investigated the critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization of black holes within the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory featuring higher-order coupling functions. Both the critical scalarization and descalarization displayed first-order phase transitions. When examining the nonlinear dynamics near the threshold, we always observed critical solutions that are linearly unstable static scalarized black holes. The critical dynamical scalarization and descalarization share certain similarities with the type I critical gravitational collapse. However, their initial configurations, critical solutions, and final outcomes differ significantly. To provide further insights into the dynamical results, we conducted a comparative analysis involving static solutions and perturbative analysis.

Traversable Thin-shell Wormhole in the 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory

This work investigates the spherically symmetric thin-shell wormhole solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory and explores their stabilities under radial, linear perturbations. These solutions are typically traversable and characterized by a thin-shell throat in accordance with Israel's junction conditions. In asymptotically flat and AdS spacetimes with a negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, stable neutral wormholes are encountered when the magnitude of the coupling constant becomes significant. The throats of such wormholes are sustained by ordinary matter and possess finite radii. In asymptotically dS spacetimes, no stable neutral wormhole featuring ordinary matter is observed. On the other hand, for positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, stable thin-shell wormhole solutions can be established when the throats are exclusively supported by exotic matter. Moreover, stable charged wormholes comprised of ordinary matter are found universally in the asymptotically flat, AdS, and dS spacetimes. Unlike their neutral counterparts, the throat radii of such charged wormholes can be arbitrarily small. However, as the charge becomes more significant, such solutions only remain stable when supported by exotic matter.

Onset of chaotic gravitational lensing in non-Kerr rotating black holes with quadrupole mass moment

In the electromagnetic channel, chaotic gravitational lensing is a peculiar phenomenon in strong gravitational lensing. In this work, we analyze the properties and emergence of chaotic gravitational lensing in the Manko-Novikov black hole spacetime. Aiming to understand better the underlying physics, we elaborate on the boundaries of the accessible region in terms of the analyses of the contours of the effective potentials. The latter is associated with the two roots of a quadratic equation. In particular, we explore its interplay with ergoregion, which leads to specific features of the effective potentials, such as the emergence of cuspy edge and the formation of {\it pocket}, that serves as a static constraint on the geodesics. Besides, we investigate the properties of the radial and angular accelerations at the turning points in photons' trajectories. Moreover, the accelerations are analyzed, which is argued to provide a kinematic constraint on the geodesics. It is concluded that the onset of the chaotic lensing is crucially related to both constraints, and as a result, an arbitrarily slight deviation in the incident photon is significantly amplified during the course of evolution through an extensive period, demonstrating the complexity in the highly nonlinear deterministic gravitational system.

The mixed-state entanglement in holographic p-wave superconductor model

In this paper, we investigate the mixed-state entanglement in a model of p-wave superconductivity phase transition using holographic methods. We calculate several entanglement measures, including holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), mutual information (MI), and entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS). Our results show that these measures display critical behavior at the phase transition points, with the EWCS exhibiting opposite temperature behavior compared to the HEE. Additionally, we find that the critical exponents of all entanglement measures are twice those of the condensate. Moreover, we find that the EWCS is a more sensitive indicator of the critical behavior of phase transitions than the HEE. Furthermore, we uncover a universal inequality in the growth rates of EWCS and MI near critical points in thermal phase transitions, such as p-wave and s-wave superconductivity, suggesting that MI captures more information than EWCS when a phase transition first occurs.

Dynamic generation or removal of a scalar hair

We study dynamic processes through which the scalar hair of black holes is generated or detached in a theory with a scalar field non-minimally coupled to Gauss-Bonnet and Ricci scalar invariants. We concentrate on the nonlinear temporal evolution of a far-from-equilibrium gravitational system. In our simulations, we choose the initial spacetime to be either a bald Schwarzschild or a scalarized spherically symmetric black hole. Succeeding continuous accretion of the scalar field onto the original black hole, the final fate of the system displays intriguing features, which depend on the initial configurations, strengths of the perturbation, and specific metric parameters. In addition to the scalarization process through which the bald black hole addresses scalar hair, we observe the dynamical descalarization, which removes scalar hair from an original hairy hole after continuous scalar field accretion. We examine the temporal evolution of the scalar field, the metrics, and the Misner-Sharp mass of the spacetime and exhibit rich phase structures through nonlinear dynamical processes.

Descalarization by Quenching Charged Hairy Black Hole in asymptotically AdS spacetime

In this work, we study the real-time dynamics of the charged hairy black hole with the time-dependent source of scalar field in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. The numerical results reveal a novel descalarization mechanism. In order to obtain the hairy black hole as the initial data for the quench process, we first analyze the quasi-normal modes of the massive complex scalar field on the Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole background. We find the dominant unstable modes for large and small RN-AdS black holes come from the zero-damped modes and AdS modes, respectively. Then, the unstable RN-AdS black holes are perturbed to trigger the transition to hairy black holes. With the hairy black hole in hand, we specify a time dependent scalar source for the system. As the source is turned on, the electric charge, energy and scalar condensation of the system start to oscillate with the entropy increasing monotonically. Finally, with the decay of the scalar source, the system gradually settles down to a new state. Interestingly, the final state of the evolution could be a hairy black hole with less scalar condensation, a RN-AdS black hole or a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, which depends on the quench strength. However, as long as the quench strength is large enough, the system always loses all the electric charge and converges to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole.

Critical Dynamics in Holographic First-Order Phase Transition

We study the critical phenomena of the dynamical transition from a metastable state to a stable state in the model of first-order phase transition via two different triggering mechanisms. Three universal stages during the fully nonlinear evolution are extracted. On the one side, by perturbing the scalar source, an isolated seed nucleus is injected into an initial homogeneous state in the supercooled region. For critical parameters of the seed nucleus, the real-time dynamics reveal that the system will converge to a critically unstable state. For supercritical parameters, the system exhibits a phase separation, while for subcritical parameters falls back to homogeneous. The shape independence of the seed nucleus is also investigated, which implies that the critical phenomena are universal. On the other side, we propose a novel mechanism to render the critical phenomena via a collision of two gravitational shock waves on the dual geometries. Specifying a collision velocity, the initial system can be also attracted to a critically unstable state. Aside from these dynamical constructions, we also quantitatively analyze the critical nucleus preventing the system from reaching the final phase separation. We find the depth of the critical nucleus increases almost linearly with the temperature, which implies that the hotter the supercooled state is, the harder for it to trigger phase separation.

Dynamical descalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

For an asymptotically flat hairy black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) theory, we study the possibility of shedding off its scalar hair via nonlinear scalar perturbation fully interacting with the background spacetime. We examine the effect of the perturbation strength on the descalarization. The results show that the effective charge to mass ratio of the black hole plays the key role in the dynamical descalarization. The descalarization at the threshold is continuous. This indicates a second order phase transition.

Dynamical transitions in scalarization and descalarization through black hole accretion

We present the first fully nonlinear study on the accretion of scalar fields onto a seed black hole in anti-de Sitter spacetime in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Intrinsic critical phenomena in the dynamical transition between the bald and scalarized black holes are disclosed. In scalarizations, the transition is discontinuous and a metastable black hole acts as an attractor at the threshold. We construct a new physical mechanism to dynamically descalarize an isolated scalarized black hole. The first results on critical phenomena in descalarizations are revealed. The dynamical descalarizations can be either discontinuous or continuous at the threshold, distinguished by whether or not an attractor appears.

Dynamical spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models in anti-de Sitter spacetime

The phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization of charged black holes has attracted a lot of attention. In this work, we study the dynamical process of the spontaneous scalarization of charged black hole in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. Including various non-minimal couplings between the scalar field and Maxwell field, we observe that an initial scalar-free configuration suffers tachyonic instability and both the scalar field and the black hole irreducible mass grow exponentially at early times and saturate exponentially at late times. For fractional couplings, we find that though there is negative energy distribution near the black hole horizon, the black hole horizon area never decreases. But when the parameters are large, the evolution endpoints of linearly unstable bald black holes will be spacetimes with naked singularity and the cosmic censorship is violated. The effects of the black hole charge, cosmological constant and coupling strength on the dynamical scalarization process are studied in detail. We find that large enough cosmological constant can prevent the spontaneous scalarization.

Dynamical spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

We study the linear instability and the nonlinear dynamical evolution of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory in asymptotic flat spacetime. We focus on the coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ^2}$ which allows both the scalar-free RN solution and scalarized black hole solution. We first present the evolution of system parameters during dynamic scalarization. For parameter regions where spontaneous scalarization occurs, we find that the evolution of the scalar field at the horizon is dominated by the fundamental unstable mode from linear analysis at early times. At late times, the nonlinear evolution can be viewed as the perturbation of scalarized black holes.

Critical phenomena in dynamical scalarization of charged black hole

We report a new black hole scalarization mechanism and disclose novel dynamical critical phenomena in the process of the nonlinear accretion of the scalar field into black holes. The accretion process can transform a seed black hole into a final scalarized or bald black hole, depending on the initial parameter of the scalar field $p$. There is a critical parameter $p_{\ast}$ and near it all intermediate solutions are attracted to a critical solution and stay there for a time scaling as $T\propto-γ\ln|p-p_{\ast}|$. At late times, the solutions evolve into scalarized black holes if $p>p_{\ast}$, or bald black holes if $p<p_{\ast}$. The final masses of the resulting scalarized/bald black holes satisfy power-laws $M_{p}-M_{\pm}\propto|p-p_{\ast}|^{γ_{\pm}}$ where $M_{\pm}$ are the masses of the scalarized/bald black holes when $p\to p_\ast$ from above/below, and $γ_{\pm}$ the corresponding exponents.

Quasi-normal modes of the Einstein-Maxwell-aether Black Hole

We study the quasi-normal modes of the charged scalar perturbations in the background of the Einstein-Maxwell-aether black hole through three methods (WKB method, continued fraction method, generalized eigenvalue method). Then we propose the specific treatment for the generalized effective potential with $ω$-dependence and the complete procedure of transforming calculation continued fraction method into finding the zero point of the corresponding complex function numerically. These methods are valid because the results from different methods are consistent. We also investigate the allowed region of the second kind aether black hole among the system parameters ($c_{13},c_{14},Q$). Finally we show the existence of quasi-resonances of massive perturbation for Einstein-Maxwell-aether black hole even with large aether parameter.

Entanglement Wedge Minimum Cross-Section in Holographic Axion Gravity Theories

We study the mixed state entanglement properties in two holographic axion models by examining the behavior of the entanglement wedge minimum cross section (EWCS), and comparing it with the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and mutual information (MI). We find that the behavior of HEE, MI and EWCS with Hawking temperature is monotonic, while the behavior with the axion parameter $k$ is more rich, which depends on the size of the configuration and the values of the other two parameters. Interestingly, the EWCS monotonically increases with the coupling constant $κ$ between the axion field and the Maxwell field, while HEE and MI can be non-monotonic. It suggests that the EWCS, as a mixed state entanglement measure, captures distinct degrees of freedom from the HEE and MI indeed. We also provide analytical understandings for most of the numerical results.

Entanglement Wedge Minimum Cross-Section for Holographic Aether Gravity

We study the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) in holographic Aether gravity theory, a gravity theory with Lorentz symmetry violation while keeping the general covariance intact. We find that only a limited parameter space is allowed to obtain a black brane with positive Hawking temperature. Subject to these allowed parameter regions, we find that the EWCS could exhibit non-monotonic behaviors with system parameters. Meanwhile, the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), and the corresponding mutual information (MI), can only exhibit monotonic behaviors. These phenomena suggest that the EWCS could capture much more rich content of the entanglement than that of the HEE and the MI. The role of the Lorentz violation in determining the behaviors of quantum information-related quantities is also analyzed.

Reflected Entropy in Double Holography

Recently, the reflected entropy is proposed in holographic approach to describe the entanglement of a bipartite quantum system in a mixed state, which is identified as the area of the reflected minimal surface inside the entanglement wedge. In this paper, we study the reflected entropy in the doubly holographic setup, which contains the degrees of freedom of quantum matter in the bulk. In this context, we propose a notion of quantum entanglement wedge cross-section, which may describe the reflected entropy with higher-order quantum corrections. We numerically compute the reflected entropy in pure AdS background and black hole background in four dimensions, respectively. In general, the reflected entropy contains the contribution from the geometry on the brane and the contribution from the CFT. We compute their proportion for different Newton constants and find that their behaviors are in agreement with the results based on the semi-classical gravity and the correlation of CFT coupled to the bath CFT.

On AdS Black Strings at Large $D$

In this paper we study the stability of an homogeneous black string in the presence of a negative cosmological constant with minimally coupled scalar fields by using the large $D$ effective theory. This method allows us to explore the dynamics of the black strings in the nonlinear regime. We find that up to the next-to-leading order of the $1/D$ expansion, the unique consistent solution of the equations of motion must be uniform. This means the recently found Gregory-Laflamme instability caused by fined-tuned non-generic perturbations would die out at late time in the evolution of the system.
