More on complexity of operators in quantum field theory

Recently it has been shown that the complexity of SU($n$) operator is determined by the geodesic length in a bi-invariant Finsler geometry, which is constrained by some symmetries of quantum field theory. It is based on three axioms and one assumption regarding the complexity in continuous systems. By relaxing one axiom and an assumption, we find that the complexity formula is naturally generalized to the Schatten $p$-norm type. We also clarify the relation between our complexity and other works. First, we show that our results in a bi-invariant geometry are consistent with the ones in a right-invariant geometry such as $k$-local geometry. Here, a careful analysis of the sectional curvature is crucial. Second, we show that our complexity can concretely realize the conjectured pattern of the time-evolution of the complexity: the linear growth up to saturation time. The saturation time can be estimated by the relation between the topology and curvature of SU($n$) groups.

Principles and symmetries of complexity in quantum field theory

Based on general and minimal properties of the {\it discrete} circuit complexity, we define the complexity in {\it continuous} systems in a geometrical way. We first show that the Finsler metric naturally emerges in the geometry of the complexity in continuous systems. Due to fundamental symmetries of quantum field theories, the Finsler metric is more constrained and consequently, the complexity of SU($n$) operators is uniquely determined as a length of a geodesic in the Finsler geometry. Our Finsler metric is bi-invariant contrary to the right-invariance of discrete qubit systems. We clarify why the bi-invariance is relevant in quantum field theoretic systems. After comparing our results with discrete qubit systems we show most results in $k$-local right-invariant metric can also appear in our framework. Based on the bi-invariance of our formalism, we propose a new interpretation for the Schrödinger's equation in isolated systems - the quantum state evolves by the process of minimizing "computational cost."

Hawking radiation for scalar fields by Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes

We study the greybody factor and power spectra of Hawking radiation for the minimally or nonminimally coupled scalar field with exact numerical method in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black hole spacetime. The effects of scalar coupling constant, angular momentum number of scalar, spacetime dimension, cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant on the Hawking radiation are studied in detail. Specifically, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant always increases the greybody factor in the entire energy regime. Different from the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole, the effects of the scalar coupling constant on the greybody factor are not monotonic but relevant to the values of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. Moreover, both these two coupling constants always suppress the power spectra of Hawking radiation in the whole energy regime.

Holographic entanglement of purification for thermofield double states and thermal quench

We explore the properties of holographic entanglement of purification (EoP) for two disjoint strips in the Schwarzschild-AdS black brane and the Vaidya-AdS black brane spacetimes. For two given strips on the same boundary of Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime, there is an upper bound of the separation beyond which the holographic EoP will always vanish no matter how wide the strips are. In the case that two strips are in the two boundaries of the spacetime respectively, we find that the holographic EoP exists only when the strips are wide enough. If the width is finite, the EoP can be nonzero in a finite time region. For thermal quench case, we find that the equilibrium time of holographic EoP is only sensitive to the width of strips, while that of the holographic mutual information is sensitive not only to the width of strips but also to their separation.

Holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench

We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case we find that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and gets to saturation. Moreover we notice that when the size of the strip is large enough and the quench is fast enough, in $AdS_{d+1}(d\geq3)$ spacetime the evolution of the complexity is discontinuous and there is a sudden drop due to the transition of the extremal entanglement surface. We discuss the effects of the quench speed, the strip size, the black hole mass and the spacetime dimension on the evolution of the subregion complexity in detail numerically.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Black Rings at Large $D$

We study the black ring solution in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory at large $D$. By using the $1/D$ expansion in the near horizon region we derive the effective equations for the slowly rotating black holes in the EGB theory. The effective equations describe the non-linear dynamics of various stationary solutions, including the EGB black ring, the slowly rotating EGB black hole and the slowly boosted EGB black string. By different embeddings we construct these stationary solutions explicitly. By performing the perturbation analysis of the effective equations, we obtain the quasinormal modes of the EGB black ring. We find that thin EGB black ring becomes unstable against non-axisymmetric perturbation.Furthermore, we numerically evolve the effective equations in a particular case to study the final state of the instability, and find that the thin black ring becomes the stable non-uniformblack ring at late time, which gives a relative strong evidence to support the conjecture given in [arXiv:1510.02200].

Greybody factors for Spherically Symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black hole

We study the greybody factors of the scalar fields in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes in higher dimensions. We derive the greybody factors analytically for both minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the greybody factor on various parameters including the angular momentum number, the non-minimally coupling constant, the spacetime dimension, the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient in detail. We find that the non-minimal coupling may suppress the Hawking radiation, while the Gauss-Bonnet coupling could enhance the radiation.

Holographic Mutual Information of Two Disjoint Spheres

We study quantum corrections to holographic mutual information for two disjoint spheres at a large separation by using the operator product expansion of the twist field. In the large separation limit, the holographic mutual information is vanishing at the semiclassical order, but receive quantum corrections from the fluctuations. We show that the leading contributions from the quantum fluctuations take universal forms as suggested from the boundary CFT. We find the universal behavior for the scalar, the vector, the tensor and the fermionic fields by treating these fields as free fields propagating in the fixed background and by using the 1/n prescription. In particular, for the fields with gauge symmetries, including the massless vector boson and massless graviton, we find that the gauge parts in the propagators play indispensable role in reading the leading order corrections to the bulk mutual information.

Holographic Turbulence in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity at Large $D$

We study the holographic hydrodynamics in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) gravity in the framework of the large $D$ expansion. We find that the large $D$ EGB equations can be interpreted as the hydrodynamic equations describing the conformal fluid. These fluid equations are truncated at the second order of the derivative expansion, similar to the Einstein gravity at large $D$. From the analysis of the fluid flows, we find that the fluid equations can be taken as a variant of the compressible version of the non-relativistic Navier-Stokes equations. Particularly, in the limit of small Mach number, these equations could be cast into the form of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with redefined Reynolds number and Mach number. By using numerical simulation, we find that the EGB holographic turbulence shares similar qualitative feature as the turbulence from the Einstein gravity, despite the presence of two extra terms in the equations of motion. We analyze the effect of the GB term on the holographic turbulence in detail.

Comparison of holographic and field theoretic complexities by time dependent thermofield double states

We compute the time-dependent complexity of the thermofield double states by four different proposals: two holographic proposals based on the "complexity-action" (CA) conjecture and "complexity-volume" (CV) conjecture, and two quantum field theoretic proposals based on the Fubini-Study metric (FS) and Finsler geometry (FG). We find that four different proposals yield both similarities and differences, which will be useful to deepen our understanding on the complexity and sharpen its definition. In particular, at early time the complexity linearly increase in the CV and FG proposals, linearly decreases in the FS proposal, and does not change in the CA proposal. In the late time limit, the CA, CV and FG proposals all show that the growth rate is $2E/(π\hbar)$ saturating the Lloyd's bound, while the FS proposal shows the growth rate is zero. It seems that the holographic CV conjecture and the field theoretic FG method are more correlated.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Black Strings at Large $D$

We study the black string solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet(EGB) theory at large $D$. By using the $1/D$ expansion in the near horizon region we derive the effective equations that describe the dynamics of the EGB black strings. The uniform and non-uniform black strings are obtained as the static solutions of the effective equations. From the perturbation analysis of the effective equations, we find that thin EGB black strings suffer from the Gregory-Laflamme instablity and the GB term weakens the instability when the GB coefficient is small, however, when the GB coefficient is large the GB term enhances the instability. Furthermore, we numerically solve the effective equations to study the non-linear instability. It turns out that the thin black strings are unstable to developing inhomogeneities along their length, and at late times they asymptote to the stable non-uniform black strings. The behavior is qualitatively similar to the case in the Einstein gravity. Compared with the black string instability in the Einstein gravity at large D, when the GB coefficient is small the time needed to reach to final state increases, but when the GB coefficient is large the time to reach to final state decreases. Starting from the point of view in which the effective equations can be interpreted as the equations for the dynamical fluid, we evaluate the transport coefficients and find that the ratio of the shear viscosity and the entropy density agrees with that obtained previously in the membrane paradigm after taking the large $D$ limit.

Thermodynamical and dynamical properties of Charged BTZ Black Holes

We investigate the spacetime properties of BTZ black holes in the presence of the Maxwell field and Born-Infeld field and find rich properties in the spacetime structures when the model parameters are varied. Employing the Landau-Lifshitz theory, we examine the thermodynamical phase transition in the charged BTZ black holes. We further study the dynamical perturbation in the background of the charged BTZ black holes and find different properties in the dynamics when the thermodynamical phase transition occurs.

Dynamical probe of thermodynamical properties in three-dimensional hairy AdS black holes

We study separatively the quasinormal modes (QNM) of electromagnetic perturbations around three-dimensional anti-de Sitter(AdS) black holes in Jordan and Einstein frames, which are related by the conformal transformations and a redefinition of a scalar field. We find that, in the Jordan frame, the imaginary parts of QNM frequencies can reflect the thermodynamical stabilities of hairy black holes, including the possible phase transition between the hairy black hole and BTZ black hole, disclosed by examining the corresponding free energies. Similar results are also uncovered in the Einstein frame. The obtained results further support that the QNM can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic properties in black holes.

Gravitational collapse of massless scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity

We study the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar matter field in asymptotic flat spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity. In the Einstein frame of $f(R)$ gravity, an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. We find that besides the usual competition between gravitational energy and kinetic energy in the process of gravitational collapse, the new scalar field brought by the conformal transformation adds one more competing force in the dynamical system. The dynamical competition can be controlled by tuning the amplitudes of the initial perturbations of the new scalar field and the matter field. To understand the physical reasons behind these phenomena, we analyze the gravitational potential behavior and calculate the Ricci scalar at center with the change of initial amplitudes of perturbations. We find rich physics on the formation of black holes through gravitational collapse in $f(R)$ gravity.

Charged scalar gravitational collapse in de Sitter spacetime

We study the charged scalar collapse in de Sitter spacetimes. With the electric charge, there is one more competitor to join the competition of dynamics in the gravitational collapse. We find that two factors can influence the electric charge. If we just adjust the charge conjugation, the electric charge effect is always perturbative at the black hole threshold. The electric charge can also be influenced by the initial conditions of perturbations. These initial parameters can be tuned to control the competition in dynamics and present us new and rich physics in the process of gravitational collapse. We give physical explanations on these phenomena found in dynamics. Furthermore we show that the properties of the gravitational collapse are universal and do not depend on spacetime dimensions.

Charged Scalar Perturbations around Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger Black Holes

We examine the stability of the Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GHS) black hole under charged scalar perturbations. We find that different from the neutral scalar field perturbations, only two numerical methods, such as the continued fraction method and the asymptotic iteration method, can keep high efficiency and accuracy requirements in the frequency domain computations. The comparisons of the efficiency between these two methods have also been done. Employing the appropriate numerical method, we show that the GHS black hole is always stable against charged scalar perturbations. This is different from the result obtained in the de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter black holes. Furthermore we argue that in the GHS black hole background there is no amplification of the incident charged scalar wave to cause the superradiance, so that the superradiant instability cannot exist in this spacetime.

Multibrane DGP model: Our universe as a stack of $(2+1)$-dim branes

We consider scenario in which our $(3+1)$-dim universe is actually a dense stack of multiple parallel $(2+1)$-dim branes. For this purpose, we generalize the DGP model to a multi-brane case. We solve for the propagation of the scalar field and gravity in this setup. At short distances (high momenta) along the branes interactions follow the $(2+1)$-dim laws, while at large distances (low momenta) interactions follow the usual $(3+1)$-dim laws. This feature is inherited from the original DGP model. In the direction perpendicular to the brane, we show that interactions become $(3+1)$-dim at low momenta which are unable to resolve the interbrane separation. Thus, this is one of the explicit constructs of the "vanishing dimensions" scenario where high energy physics appears to be lower dimensional rather than higher dimensional.

Superradiant instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor theory

We investigate in detail the mechanism of superradiance to render the instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor gravity. Our results provide more clues to examine the scalar-tensor gravity in the astrophysical black holes in the universe with cosmological constant. We also discuss the spontaneous scalarization in the de Sitter background and find that this instability can also happen in the spherical de Sitter configuration in a special style.
