Semantic Communication with Adaptive Universal Transformer

With the development of deep learning (DL), natural language processing (NLP) makes it possible for us to analyze and understand a large amount of language texts. Accordingly, we can achieve a semantic communication in terms of joint semantic source and channel coding over a noisy channel with the help of NLP. However, the existing method to realize this goal is to use a fixed transformer of NLP while ignoring the difference of semantic information contained in each sentence. To solve this problem, we propose a new semantic communication system based on Universal Transformer. Compared with the traditional transformer, an adaptive circulation mechanism is introduced in the Universal Transformer. Through the introduction of the circulation mechanism, the new semantic communication system can be more flexible to transmit sentences with different semantic information, and achieve better end-to-end performance under various channel conditions.

Convergence Analysis and System Design for Federated Learning over Wireless Networks

Federated learning (FL) has recently emerged as an important and promising learning scheme in IoT, enabling devices to jointly learn a model without sharing their raw data sets. However, as the training data in FL is not collected and stored centrally, FL training requires frequent model exchange, which is largely affected by the wireless communication network. Therein, limited bandwidth and random package loss restrict interactions in training. Meanwhile, the insufficient message synchronization among distributed clients could also affect FL convergence. In this paper, we analyze the convergence rate of FL training considering the joint impact of communication network and training settings. Further by considering the training costs in terms of time and power, the optimal scheduling problems for communication networks are formulated. The developed theoretical results can be used to assist the system parameter selections and explain the principle of how the wireless communication system could influence the distributed training process and network scheduling.

Toward Native Artificial Intelligence in 6G Networks: System Design, Architectures, and Paradigms

The mobile communication system has transformed to be the fundamental infrastructure to support digital demands from all industry sectors, and 6G is envisioned to go far beyond the communication-only purpose. There is coming to a consensus that 6G will treat Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the cornerstone and has a potential capability to provide "intelligence inclusion", which implies to enable the access of AI services at anytime and anywhere by anyone. Apparently, the intelligent inclusion vision produces far-reaching influence on the corresponding network architecture design in 6G and deserves a clean-slate rethink. In this article, we propose an end-to-end system architecture design scope for 6G, and talk about the necessity to incorporate an independent data plane and a novel intelligent plane with particular emphasis on end-to-end AI workflow orchestration, management and operation. We also highlight the advantages to provision converged connectivity and computing services at the network function plane. Benefiting from these approaches, we believe that 6G will turn to an "everything as a service" (XaaS) platform with significantly enhanced business merits.
