Generation of gravitational waves in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

We investigate gravitational waves (GWs) generated in a two-field inflationary model with a non-canonical kinetic term, in which the gravitational Chern-Simons term is coupled to a heavy dynamical field. In such a model, primordial GWs experience a period of resonant amplification for some modes. In addition, isocurvature perturbations suffer from a temporary tachyonic instability due to an effective negative mass, which source curvature perturbations, resulting in large induced GWs. These two stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds correspond to different frequency bands, which are expected to be detected by future GW detectors such as SKA, LISA and Taiji.

Parity violation in stochastic gravitational wave background from inflation

We study the inflationary implications of a novel parity-violating gravity model, which modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity by introducing the Nieh-Yan term coupled to an axion-like field. The parity-violating Nieh-Yan term results in the velocity birefringence of gravitational waves (GWs) and triggers the tachyonic instability only for one of the two circular polarization states. We consider that the inflaton is identified as the coupled axion-like field with a wiggly potential characterized by steep cliffs connected by smooth plateaus. During inflation, the temporary fast roll of axion on the cliff-like region leads to the significant enhancement of the tensor perturbations in one polarization state with the wave numbers that exit the horizon around this period. In this setup, the resulting energy spectrum for GWs presents a sizable localized bump involving the contribution of only one polarization state. This chiral GW background is detectable by LISA and Taiji, and its chirality can be determined by correlating two detectors, which provide an opportunity to probe the inflation and test the gravity model.

Gravitational waves from resonant amplification of curvature perturbations during inflation

Parametric resonance in a single-field inflationary model with a periodic structure on the potential gives rise to curvature perturbations with large amplitudes on small scales, which could result in observable primordial black holes (PBHs) and concomitant gravitational waves (GWs) induced by curvature perturbations in the radiation-dominated era. In such a model, GWs associated with the PBH formation were investigated in Ref. [1]. In this paper, we consider a stochastic GW background sourced by inflaton perturbations resonantly amplified during inflation. We compute the energy spectra of induced GWs produced both during inflation and in the radiation-dominated era, and find that the peak of the energy spectrum of the former is much higher than that of the latter, but is located at a lower frequency. Moreover, the energy spectrum of induced GWs produced during inflation exhibits a unique oscillating character in the ultraviolet region. Both the stochastic GW backgrounds are expected to be detected by future space-based laser interferometers.

Primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational wave background from inflation with a noncanonical spectator field

We investigate the enhancement of the curvature perturbations in a single-field slow-roll inflation with a spectator scalar field kinetically coupled to the inflaton. The coupling term with a periodic function of inflaton triggers the exponential growth of the spectator field perturbations, which indirectly amplifies the curvature perturbations to produce a sizable abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). This scenario is found to be insensitive to the inflationary background. We study two distinct populations of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) produced in this scenario, i.e., induced by the scalar perturbations during the inflationary era and the radiation-dominated era, respectively. With the appropriate choices of parameter space, we consider two PBH mass windows of great interest. One is PBHs of masses $\mathcal{O}(10^{-12})M_\odot$ that can be a vital component of dark matter, and the predicted total energy spectrum of SGWB shows a unique profile and is detectable by LISA and Taiji. The other is PBHs of masses $\mathcal{O}(10)M_\odot$ which can provide consistent explanation for the LIGO-Virgo events. More interestingly, the predicted gravitational wave signal from the radiation-dominated era may account for the NANOGrav results.

Resonance instability of primordial gravitational waves during inflation in Chern-Simons gravity

We investigate axion inflation where the gravitational Chern-Simons term is coupled to a periodic function of the inflaton. We find that tensor perturbations with different polarizations are amplified in different ways by the Chern-Simons coupling. Depending on the model parameters, the resonance amplification results in a parity-violating peak or a board plateau in the energy spectrum of gravitational waves, and the sharp cutoff in the infrared region constitutes a characteristic distinguishable from stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds produced by matter fields in Einstein gravity.

Primordial black holes and oscillating gravitational waves in slow-roll and slow-climb inflation with an intermediate non-inflationary phase

We propose a new single field inflation model in which the usual slow-roll inflation is joined to a new period of slow-climb and slow-roll inflation through a short intermediate non-inflationary phase. We then show that primordial curvature perturbations can be enhanced at small scales, a sizable amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) can be produced which make up most of dark matter, the gravitational waves (GWs) induced by scalar metric perturbations that accompany with the formation of PBHs can be detectable by future GW experiments, and last but not least, our model is compatible with the latest cosmic microwave background observations. Remarkably, the GW spectrum displays a unique oscillating character in the ultraviolet regions which originates from the short non-inflationary phase. A detection of such oscillations in the GW spectrum may suggest the existence of such a non-inflationary phase in the whole inflation, thus providing us a chance to reveal an interesting period in the evolution of the early Universe and distinguish our model from others.

Production of gravitational waves during preheating in the Starobinsky inflationary model

The production of GWs during preheating in the Starobinsky model with a nonminimally coupled auxiliary scalar field is studied through the lattice simulation in this paper. We find that the GW spectrum $Ω_{\rm gw}$ grows fast with the increase of the absolute value of coupling parameter $ξ$. This is because the resonant bands become broad with the increase of $|ξ|$. When $ξ<0$, $Ω_{\rm gw}$ begins to grow once the inflation ends and grows faster than the case of $ξ>0$. $Ω_{\rm gw}$ reaches the maximum at $ξ=-20$ ($ξ=42$ for the case $ξ>0$) and then decreases with slight oscillation. Furthermore we find that the GWs produced in the era of preheating satisfy the limits from the Planck and next-generation CMB experiments.

Scalar induced gravitational waves in inflation with gravitationally enhanced friction

We study the scalar induced gravitational wave (GW) background in inflation with gravitationally enhanced friction (GEF). The GEF mechanism, which is realized by assuming a nonminimal derivative coupling between the inflaton field and gravity, is used to amplify the small-scale curvature perturbations to generate a sizable amount of primordial black holes. We find that the GW energy spectra can reach the detectable scopes of the future GW projects, and the power spectrum of curvature perturbations has a power-law form in the vicinity of the peak. The scaling of the GW spectrum in the ultraviolet regions is two times that of the power spectrum slope, and has a lower bound. In the infrared regions, the slope of the GW spectrum can be described roughly by a log-dependent form. These features of the GW spectrum may be used to check the GEF mechanism if the scalar induced GWs are detected in the future.

Nonlinear preheating with nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the Starobinsky model

We study the preheating after inflation in the Starobinsky model with a nonminimally coupled scalar field $χ$. Using the lattice simulation, we analyze the rescattering between the $χ$ particles and the inflaton condensate, and the backreaction effect of the scalar metric perturbations. We find that the rescattering is an efficient mechanism promoting the growth of the $χ$ field variance. Meanwhile, copious inflaton particles can be knocked out of the inflaton condensate by rescattering. As a result, the inflaton field can become a nonnegligible gravitational wave source, even comparable with the $χ$ field in some parameter regions. For the scalar metric perturbations, which are on the sub-Hubble scale in our analysis, our results show that they have negligible effects on the evolution of scalar fields and the production of gravitational waves in the model considered in present paper.

Primordial Black Holes from Inflation with Nonminimal Derivative Coupling

We propose a novel enhancement mechanism of the curvature perturbations in the nonminimal derivative coupling inflation model with a coupling parameter related to the inflaton field. By considering a special form of the coupling parameter as a function of the inflaton, a period of ultra-slow-roll inflation can be realized due to the gravitationally enhanced friction, and the resulting power spectrum of the curvature perturbations has a sharp peak, which is large enough to produce the primordial black holes. Under this mechanism, we can easily obtain a sharp mass spectrum of primordial black holes around specific masses such as $\mathcal{O}(10)M_\odot$, $\mathcal{O}(10^{-5})M_\odot$, and $\mathcal{O}(10^{-12})M_\odot$, which can explain the LIGO events, the ultrashort-timescale microlensing events in OGLE data, and the most of dark matter, respectively.

Production of gravitational waves during preheating with nonminimal coupling

We study the preheating and the in-process production of gravitational waves (GWs) after inflation in which the inflaton is nonminimally coupled to the curvature in a self-interacting quartic potential with the method of lattice simulation. We find that the nonminimal coupling enhances the amplitude of the density spectrum of inflaton quanta, and as a result, the peak value of the GW spectrum generated during preheating is enhanced as well and can reach the limit of detection in future GW experiments. The peaks of the GW spectrum not only exhibit distinctive characteristics as compared to those of minimally coupled inflaton potentials but also imprint information on the nonminimal coupling and the parametric resonance, and thus the detection of these peaks in the future will provide us a new avenue to reveal the physics of the early universe.

Inflationary dynamics and preheating of the non-minimally coupled inflaton field in the metric and Palatini formalisms

The inflationary dynamics and preheating in a model with a non-minimally coupled inflaton field in the metric and Palatini formalisms are studied in this paper. We find that in both formalisms, irrespective of the initial conditions, our Universe will evolve into a slow-roll inflationary era and then the scalar field rolls into an oscillating phase. The value of the scalar field at the end of the inflation in the Palatini formalism is always larger than that in the metric one, which becomes more and more obvious with the increase of the absolute value of the coupling parameter $|ξ|$. During the preheating, we find that the inflaton quanta are produced explosively due to the parameter resonance and the growth of inflaton quanta will be terminated by the backreaction. With the increase of $|ξ|$, the resonance bands gradually close to the zero momentum ($k=0$), and the structure of resonance changes and becomes broader and broader in the metric formalism, while, it remains to be narrow in the Palatini formalism. The energy transfer from the inflaton field to the fluctuation becomes more and more efficient with the increase of $|ξ|$, and in the metric formalism the growth of the efficiency of energy transfer is much faster than that in the Palatini formalism. Therefore, the inflation and preheating show different characteristics in different formalisms.
