Viewpoint-aware Progressive Clustering for Unsupervised Vehicle Re-identification

Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) is an active task due to its importance in large-scale intelligent monitoring in smart cities. Despite the rapid progress in recent years, most existing methods handle vehicle Re-ID task in a supervised manner, which is both time and labor-consuming and limits their application to real-life scenarios. Recently, unsupervised person Re-ID methods achieve impressive performance by exploring domain adaption or clustering-based techniques. However, one cannot directly generalize these methods to vehicle Re-ID since vehicle images present huge appearance variations in different viewpoints. To handle this problem, we propose a novel viewpoint-aware clustering algorithm for unsupervised vehicle Re-ID. In particular, we first divide the entire feature space into different subspaces according to the predicted viewpoints and then perform a progressive clustering to mine the accurate relationship among samples. Comprehensive experiments against the state-of-the-art methods on two multi-viewpoint benchmark datasets VeRi and VeRi-Wild validate the promising performance of the proposed method in both with and without domain adaption scenarios while handling unsupervised vehicle Re-ID.

LSOTB-TIR:A Large-Scale High-Diversity Thermal Infrared Object Tracking Benchmark

In this paper, we present a Large-Scale and high-diversity general Thermal InfraRed (TIR) Object Tracking Benchmark, called LSOTBTIR, which consists of an evaluation dataset and a training dataset with a total of 1,400 TIR sequences and more than 600K frames. We annotate the bounding box of objects in every frame of all sequences and generate over 730K bounding boxes in total. To the best of our knowledge, LSOTB-TIR is the largest and most diverse TIR object tracking benchmark to date. To evaluate a tracker on different attributes, we define 4 scenario attributes and 12 challenge attributes in the evaluation dataset. By releasing LSOTB-TIR, we encourage the community to develop deep learning based TIR trackers and evaluate them fairly and comprehensively. We evaluate and analyze more than 30 trackers on LSOTB-TIR to provide a series of baselines, and the results show that deep trackers achieve promising performance. Furthermore, we re-train several representative deep trackers on LSOTB-TIR, and their results demonstrate that the proposed training dataset significantly improves the performance of deep TIR trackers. Codes and dataset are available at https://github.com/QiaoLiuHit/LSOTB-TIR.

Challenge-Aware RGBT Tracking

RGB and thermal source data suffer from both shared and specific challenges, and how to explore and exploit them plays a critical role to represent the target appearance in RGBT tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel challenge-aware neural network to handle the modality-shared challenges (e.g., fast motion, scale variation and occlusion) and the modality-specific ones (e.g., illumination variation and thermal crossover) for RGBT tracking. In particular, we design several parameter-shared branches in each layer to model the target appearance under the modality-shared challenges, and several parameterindependent branches under the modality-specific ones. Based on the observation that the modality-specific cues of different modalities usually contains the complementary advantages, we propose a guidance module to transfer discriminative features from one modality to another one, which could enhance the discriminative ability of some weak modality. Moreover, all branches are aggregated together in an adaptive manner and parallel embedded in the backbone network to efficiently form more discriminative target representations. These challenge-aware branches are able to model the target appearance under certain challenges so that the target representations can be learnt by a few parameters even in the situation of insufficient training data. From the experimental results we will show that our method operates at a real-time speed while performing well against the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmark datasets.

Influence of Small Molecule Property on Antibody Response

Antibodies with high titer and affinity to small molecule are critical in the field for the development of vaccines against drugs of abuse, antidotes to toxins and immunoassays for compounds. However, little is known regarding how properties of small molecule influence and which chemical descriptor could indicate the degree of the antibody response. Based on our previous study, we designed and synthesized two groups of small molecules, called haptens, with varied hydrophobicities to investigate the relationship between properties of small molecules and antibody response in term of titer and affinity. We found that the magnitude of the antibody response is positively correlated with the degree of molecular hydrophobicity and related chemical descriptors. This study provides insight into the immunological characteristics of small molecules themselves and useful clues to produce high quality antibodies against small molecules.

M$^5$L: Multi-Modal Multi-Margin Metric Learning for RGBT Tracking

Classifying the confusing samples in the course of RGBT tracking is a quite challenging problem, which hasn't got satisfied solution. Existing methods only focus on enlarging the boundary between positive and negative samples, however, the structured information of samples might be harmed, e.g., confusing positive samples are closer to the anchor than normal positive samples. To handle this problem, we propose a novel Multi-Modal Multi-Margin Metric Learning framework, named M$^5$L for RGBT tracking in this paper. In particular, we design a multi-margin structured loss to distinguish the confusing samples which play a most critical role in tracking performance boosting. To alleviate this problem, we additionally enlarge the boundaries between confusing positive samples and normal ones, between confusing negative samples and normal ones with predefined margins, by exploiting the structured information of all samples in each modality. Moreover, a cross-modality constraint is employed to reduce the difference between modalities and push positive samples closer to the anchor than negative ones from two modalities. In addition, to achieve quality-aware RGB and thermal feature fusion, we introduce the modality attentions and learn them using a feature fusion module in our network. Extensive experiments on large-scale datasets testify that our framework clearly improves the tracking performance and outperforms the state-of-the-art RGBT trackers.

Phase-based Variant Maximum Likelihood Positioning for Passive UHF-RFID Tags

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology brings tremendous advancement in Internet-of-Things, especially in supply chain and smart inventory management. Phase-based passive ultra high frequency RFID tag localization has attracted great interest, due to its insensitivity to the propagation environment and tagged object properties compared with the signal strength based method. In this paper, a phase-based maximum-likelihood tag positioning estimation is proposed. To mitigate the phase uncertainty, the likelihood function is reconstructed through trigonometric transformation. Weights are constructed to reduce the impact of unexpected interference and to augment the positioning performance. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithms realize fine-grained tag localization, which achieve centimeter-level lateral accuracy, and less than 15-centimeters vertical accuracy along the altitude of the racks.

DeepAtom: A Framework for Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity Prediction

The cornerstone of computational drug design is the calculation of binding affinity between two biological counterparts, especially a chemical compound, i.e., a ligand, and a protein. Predicting the strength of protein-ligand binding with reasonable accuracy is critical for drug discovery. In this paper, we propose a data-driven framework named DeepAtom to accurately predict the protein-ligand binding affinity. With 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) architecture, DeepAtom could automatically extract binding related atomic interaction patterns from the voxelized complex structure. Compared with the other CNN based approaches, our light-weight model design effectively improves the model representational capacity, even with the limited available training data. With validation experiments on the PDBbind v.2016 benchmark and the independent Astex Diverse Set, we demonstrate that the less feature engineering dependent DeepAtom approach consistently outperforms the other state-of-the-art scoring methods. We also compile and propose a new benchmark dataset to further improve the model performances. With the new dataset as training input, DeepAtom achieves Pearson's R=0.83 and RMSE=1.23 pK units on the PDBbind v.2016 core set. The promising results demonstrate that DeepAtom models can be potentially adopted in computational drug development protocols such as molecular docking and virtual screening.

FANet: Quality-Aware Feature Aggregation Network for Robust RGB-T Tracking

This paper investigates how to perform robust visual tracking in adverse and challenging conditions using complementary visual and thermal infrared data (RGBT tracking). We propose a novel deep network architecture called qualityaware Feature Aggregation Network (FANet) for robust RGBT tracking. Unlike existing RGBT trackers, our FANet aggregates hierarchical deep features within each modality to handle the challenge of significant appearance changes caused by deformation, low illumination, background clutter and occlusion. In particular, we employ the operations of max pooling to transform these hierarchical and multi-resolution features into uniform space with the same resolution, and use 1x1 convolution operation to compress feature dimensions to achieve more effective hierarchical feature aggregation. To model the interactions between RGB and thermal modalities, we elaborately design an adaptive aggregation subnetwork to integrate features from different modalities based on their reliabilities and thus are able to alleviate noise effects introduced by low-quality sources. The whole FANet is trained in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments on large-scale benchmark datasets demonstrate the high-accurate performance against other state-of-the-art RGBT tracking methods.

Learning Target-oriented Dual Attention for Robust RGB-T Tracking

RGB-Thermal object tracking attempt to locate target object using complementary visual and thermal infrared data. Existing RGB-T trackers fuse different modalities by robust feature representation learning or adaptive modal weighting. However, how to integrate dual attention mechanism for visual tracking is still a subject that has not been studied yet. In this paper, we propose two visual attention mechanisms for robust RGB-T object tracking. Specifically, the local attention is implemented by exploiting the common visual attention of RGB and thermal data to train deep classifiers. We also introduce the global attention, which is a multi-modal target-driven attention estimation network. It can provide global proposals for the classifier together with local proposals extracted from previous tracking result. Extensive experiments on two RGB-T benchmark datasets validated the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Edge-guided Non-local Fully Convolutional Network for Salient Object Detection

Fully Convolutional Neural Network (FCN) has been widely applied to salient object detection recently by virtue of high-level semantic feature extraction, but existing FCN based methods still suffer from continuous striding and pooling operations leading to loss of spatial structure and blurred edges. To maintain the clear edge structure of salient objects, we propose a novel Edge-guided Non-local FCN (ENFNet) to perform edge guided feature learning for accurate salient object detection. In a specific, we extract hierarchical global and local information in FCN to incorporate non-local features for effective feature representations. To preserve good boundaries of salient objects, we propose a guidance block to embed edge prior knowledge into hierarchical feature maps. The guidance block not only performs feature-wise manipulation but also spatial-wise transformation for effective edge embeddings. Our model is trained on the MSRA-B dataset and tested on five popular benchmark datasets. Comparing with the state-of-the-art methods, the proposed method achieves the best performance on all datasets.

Learning Compact Target-Oriented Feature Representations for Visual Tracking

Many state-of-the-art trackers usually resort to the pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) model for correlation filtering, in which deep features could usually be redundant, noisy and less discriminative for some certain instances, and the tracking performance might thus be affected. To handle this problem, we propose a novel approach, which takes both advantages of good generalization of generative models and excellent discrimination of discriminative models, for visual tracking. In particular, we learn compact, discriminative and target-oriented feature representations using the Laplacian coding algorithm that exploits the dependence among the input local features in a discriminative correlation filter framework. The feature representations and the correlation filter are jointly learnt to enhance to each other via a fast solver which only has very slight computational burden on the tracking speed. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that this proposed framework clearly outperforms baseline trackers with a modest impact on the frame rate, and performs comparably against the state-of-the-art methods.

Segmenting Objects in Day and Night:Edge-Conditioned CNN for Thermal Image Semantic Segmentation

Despite much research progress in image semantic segmentation, it remains challenging under adverse environmental conditions caused by imaging limitations of visible spectrum. While thermal infrared cameras have several advantages over cameras for the visible spectrum, such as operating in total darkness, insensitive to illumination variations, robust to shadow effects and strong ability to penetrate haze and smog. These advantages of thermal infrared cameras make the segmentation of semantic objects in day and night. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture, called edge-conditioned convolutional neural network (EC-CNN), for thermal image semantic segmentation. Particularly, we elaborately design a gated feature-wise transform layer in EC-CNN to adaptively incorporate edge prior knowledge. The whole EC-CNN is end-to-end trained, and can generate high-quality segmentation results with the edge guidance. Meanwhile, we also introduce a new benchmark dataset named "Segment Objects in Day And night"(SODA) for comprehensive evaluations in thermal image semantic segmentation. SODA contains over 7,168 manually annotated and synthetically generated thermal images with 20 semantic region labels and from a broad range of viewpoints and scene complexities. Extensive experiments on SODA demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed EC-CNN against the state-of-the-art methods.

Dense Feature Aggregation and Pruning for RGBT Tracking

How to perform effective information fusion of different modalities is a core factor in boosting the performance of RGBT tracking. This paper presents a novel deep fusion algorithm based on the representations from an end-to-end trained convolutional neural network. To deploy the complementarity of features of all layers, we propose a recursive strategy to densely aggregate these features that yield robust representations of target objects in each modality. In different modalities, we propose to prune the densely aggregated features of all modalities in a collaborative way. In a specific, we employ the operations of global average pooling and weighted random selection to perform channel scoring and selection, which could remove redundant and noisy features to achieve more robust feature representation. Experimental results on two RGBT tracking benchmark datasets suggest that our tracker achieves clear state-of-the-art against other RGB and RGBT tracking methods.

Multi-Adapter RGBT Tracking

The task of RGBT tracking aims to take the complementary advantages from visible spectrum and thermal infrared data to achieve robust visual tracking, and receives more and more attention in recent years. Existing works focus on modality-specific information integration by introducing modality weights to achieve adaptive fusion or learning robust feature representations of different modalities. Although these methods could effectively deploy the modality-specific properties, they ignore the potential values of modality-shared cues as well as instance-aware information, which are crucial for effective fusion of different modalities in RGBT tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Adapter convolutional Network (MANet) to jointly perform modality-shared, modality-specific and instance-aware feature learning in an end-to-end trained deep framework for RGBT tracking. We design three kinds of adapters within our network. In a specific, the generality adapter is to extract shared object representations, the modality adapter aims at encoding modality-specific information to deploy their complementary advantages, and the instance adapter is to model the appearance properties and temporal variations of a certain object. Moreover, to reduce computational complexity for real-time demand of visual tracking, we design a parallel structure of generic adapter and modality adapter. Extensive experiments on two RGBT tracking benchmark datasets demonstrate the outstanding performance of the proposed tracker against other state-of-the-art RGB and RGBT tracking algorithms.

RGB-T Image Saliency Detection via Collaborative Graph Learning

Image saliency detection is an active research topic in the community of computer vision and multimedia. Fusing complementary RGB and thermal infrared data has been proven to be effective for image saliency detection. In this paper, we propose an effective approach for RGB-T image saliency detection. Our approach relies on a novel collaborative graph learning algorithm. In particular, we take superpixels as graph nodes, and collaboratively use hierarchical deep features to jointly learn graph affinity and node saliency in a unified optimization framework. Describe and Attend to Track: Learning Natural Language guided Structural Representation and Visual Attention for Object Tracking

The tracking-by-detection framework requires a set of positive and negative training samples to learn robust tracking models for precise localization of target objects. However, existing tracking models mostly treat different samples independently while ignores the relationship information among them. In this paper, we propose a novel structure-aware deep neural network to overcome such limitations. In particular, we construct a graph to represent the pairwise relationships among training samples, and additionally take the natural language as the supervised information to learn both feature representations and classifiers robustly. To refine the states of the target and re-track the target when it is back to view from heavy occlusion and out of view, we elaborately design a novel subnetwork to learn the target-driven visual attentions from the guidance of both visual and natural language cues. Extensive experiments on five tracking benchmark datasets validated the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Quality-Aware Multimodal Saliency Detection via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Incorporating various modes of information into the machine learning procedure is becoming a new trend. And data from various source can provide more information than single one no matter they are heterogeneous or homogeneous. Existing deep learning based algorithms usually directly concatenate features from each domain to represent the input data. Seldom of them take the quality of data into consideration which is a key issue in related multimodal problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient quality-aware deep neural network to model the weight of data from each domain using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, we take the weighting of each domain as a decision-making problem and teach an agent learn to interact with the environment. The agent can tune the weight of each domain through discrete action selection and obtain a positive reward if the saliency results are improved. The target of the agent is to achieve maximum rewards after finished its sequential action selection. We validate the proposed algorithms on multimodal saliency detection in a coarse-to-fine way. The coarse saliency maps are generated from an encoder-decoder framework which is trained with content loss and adversarial loss. The final results can be obtained via adaptive weighting of maps from each domain. Experiments conducted on two kinds of salient object detection benchmarks validated the effectiveness of our proposed quality-aware deep neural network.

RGB-T Object Tracking:Benchmark and Baseline

RGB-Thermal (RGB-T) object tracking receives more and more attention due to the strongly complementary benefits of thermal information to visible data. However, RGB-T research is limited by lacking a comprehensive evaluation platform. In this paper, we propose a large-scale video benchmark dataset for RGB-T tracking. It has three major advantages over existing ones: 1) Its size is sufficiently large for large-scale performance evaluation (total frame number: 234K, maximum frame per sequence: 8K). 2) The alignment between RGB-T sequence pairs is highly accurate, which does not need pre- or post-processing. 3) The occlusion levels are annotated for occlusion-sensitive performance analysis of different tracking algorithms. Moreover, we propose a novel graph-based approach to learn a robust object representation for RGB-T tracking. In particular, the tracked object is represented with a graph with image patches as nodes. This graph including graph structure, node weights and edge weights is dynamically learned in a unified ADMM (alternating direction method of multipliers)-based optimization framework, in which the modality weights are also incorporated for adaptive fusion of multiple source data.Extensive experiments on the large-scale dataset are executed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed tracker against other state-of-the-art tracking methods. We also provide new insights and potential research directions to the field of RGB-T object tracking.
