Cooking beyond Frames: A Stereo Event Camera Dataset in the Kitchen

Event cameras, also known as neuromorphic cameras, have gained significant attention in recent years due to their high temporal resolution, high dynamic range, and low power consumption. While many studies and datasets in neuromorphic vision have focused on automotive and drone applications, human-centric daily-life scenarios remain largely underrepresented, despite their importance for developing and benchmarking event-based perception systems. Moreover, the few existing event-based human activity datasets are typically recorded with scripted human actions, limiting their ability to capture natural human behaviors. In this paper, we introduce EventKitchen, a large-scale stereo event camera benchmark dataset of human cooking activities in the kitchen. EventKitchen is egocentrically collected from 10 participants in 13 diverse kitchens, where the participants wear a helmet with multiple sensors and naturally perform cooking activities, without any scripted actions. EventKitchen comprises 5.5 hours of stereo event recordings with synchronized RGB, depth, and IMU data. We provide human annotations for 10,762 action segments and 13,482 bounding boxes. We train baseline models on EventKitchen to perform multiple event-based tasks, including action recognition, object detection, and stereo depth estimation. By capturing natural, real-world human activities, EventKitchen establishes a challenging benchmark for neuromorphic vision beyond autonomous driving.

RLMiniStyler: Light-weight RL Style Agent for Arbitrary Sequential Neural Style Generation

Arbitrary style transfer aims to apply the style of any given artistic image to another content image. Still, existing deep learning-based methods often require significant computational costs to generate diverse stylized results. Motivated by this, we propose a novel reinforcement learning-based framework for arbitrary style transfer RLMiniStyler. This framework leverages a unified reinforcement learning policy to iteratively guide the style transfer process by exploring and exploiting stylization feedback, generating smooth sequences of stylized results while achieving model lightweight. Furthermore, we introduce an uncertainty-aware multi-task learning strategy that automatically adjusts loss weights to adapt to the content and style balance requirements at different training stages, thereby accelerating model convergence. Through a series of experiments across image various resolutions, we have validated the advantages of RLMiniStyler over other state-of-the-art methods in generating high-quality, diverse artistic image sequences at a lower cost. Controlling Neural Style Transfer with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Controlling the degree of stylization in the Neural Style Transfer (NST) is a little tricky since it usually needs hand-engineering on hyper-parameters. In this paper, we propose the first deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) based architecture that splits one-step style transfer into a step-wise process for the NST task. Our RL-based method tends to preserve more details and structures of the content image in early steps, and synthesize more style patterns in later steps. It is a user-easily-controlled style-transfer method. Additionally, as our RL-based model performs the stylization progressively, it is lightweight and has lower computational complexity than existing one-step Deep Learning (DL) based models. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method.

RL-I2IT: Image-to-Image Translation with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Most existing Image-to-Image Translation (I2IT) methods generate images in a single run of a deep learning (DL) model. However, designing such a single-step model is always challenging, requiring a huge number of parameters and easily falling into bad global minimums and overfitting. In this work, we reformulate I2IT as a step-wise decision-making problem via deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and propose a novel framework that performs RL-based I2IT (RL-I2IT). The key feature in the RL-I2IT framework is to decompose a monolithic learning process into small steps with a lightweight model to progressively transform a source image successively to a target image. Considering that it is challenging to handle high dimensional continuous state and action spaces in the conventional RL framework, we introduce meta policy with a new concept Plan to the standard Actor-Critic model, which is of a lower dimension than the original image and can facilitate the actor to generate a tractable high dimensional action. In the RL-I2IT framework, we also employ a task-specific auxiliary learning strategy to stabilize the training process and improve the performance of the corresponding task. Experiments on several I2IT tasks demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method when facing high-dimensional continuous action space problems. Our implementation of the RL-I2IT framework is available at https://github.com/Algolzw/SPAC-Deformable-Registration.
