Phase transitions in 3D Ising model with cluster weight by Monte Carlo method

A cluster weight Ising model is proposed by introducing an additional cluster weight in the partition function of the traditional Ising model. It is equivalent to the O($n$) loop model or $n$-component face cubic loop model on the two-dimensional lattice, but on the three-dimensional lattice, it is still not very clear whether or not these models have the same universality. In order to simulate the cluster weight Ising model and search for new universality class, we apply a cluster algorithm, by combining the color-assignation and the Swendsen-Wang methods. The dynamical exponent for the absolute magnetization is estimated to be $z=0.45(3)$ at $n=1.5$, consistent with that of the traditional Swendsen-Wang methods. The numerical estimation of the thermal exponent $y_t$ and magnetic exponent $y_m$, show that the universalities of the two models on the three-dimensional lattice are different. We obtain the global phase diagram containing paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The phase transition between the two phases are second order at $1\leq n< n_c$ and first order at $n\geq n_c$, where $n_c\approx 2$. The scaling dimension $y_t$ equals to the system dimension $d$ when the first-order transition occurs. Our results are helpful in the understanding of some traditional statistical mechanics models.

Surface critical behaviors of coupled Haldane chains

The special surface transition at (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point is precluded in corresponding classical critical point. The mechanism of such behavior which is only found in dimerized Heisenberg models so far is still under debate. To illuminate the role of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase in inducing such nonordinary behaviors, we study a system on a two-dimensional square lattice consisted by interacting spin-1 Haldane chains, which has a genuine SPT phase--the Haldane phase--at weak interchain interactions and a quantum critical point belonging to the classical 3D O(3) universality class to the Néel phase. Different from models studied previously, there is no dimerization in the current model. Cutting the system along the chain direction or perpendicular to the chain direction exposes two different surfaces. Using unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the two different types of surface show completely different surface critical behaviors at the bulk critical point, resulted from different surface states in the SPT phase. For the system with surfaces along the chain direction, the surface critical behavior is of ordinary type of the bulk 3D O(3) critical point, while for the surfaces perpendicular to the chain direction, the surface critical behavior is nonordinary, consistent with special transitions found in dimerized Heisenberg models. Our numerical results demonstrate that the gapless surface state in the gapped SPT phase together with the gapless mode of critical point is a pure quantum scenario that leads to the nonordinary transition.

Dynamical quantum phase transition from a critical quantum quench

We study the dynamical quantum phase transition of the critical quantum quench, in which the prequenched Hamiltonian, or the postquenched Hamiltonian, or both of them are set to be the critical points of equilibrium quantum phase transitions, we find half-quantized or unquantized dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number; these results and also the existence of dynamical quantum phase transition are all closely related to the singularity of the Bogoliubov angle at the gap-closing momentum. The effects of the singularity may also be canceled out if both the prequenched and postquenched Hamiltonians are critical, then the dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number restore to integer ones. Our findings show that the widely accepted definitions of dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number are problematic for the critical quenches in the perspective of topology, which call for new definitions of them.

Engineering Surface Critical Behavior of (2+1)-Dimensional O(3) Quantum Critical Points

Surface critical behavior (SCB) refers to the singularities of physical quantities on the surface at the bulk phase transition. It is closely related to and even richer than the bulk critical behavior. In this work, we show that three types of SCB universality are realized in the dimerized Heisenberg models at the (2+1)-dimensional O(3) quantum critical points by engineering the surface configurations. The ordinary transition happens if the surface is gapped in the bulk disordered phase, while the gapless surface state generally leads to the multicritical special transition, even though the latter is precluded in classical phase transitions because the surface is in the lower critical dimension. An extraordinary transition is induced by the ferrimagnetic order on the surface of the staggered Heisenberg model, in which the surface critical exponents violate the results of the scaling theory and thus seriously challenge our current understanding of extraordinary transitions.

Overlap of two topological phases in the antiferromagnetic Potts model

By controlling the vortex core energy, the three-state ferromagnetic Potts model can exhibit two types of topological paradigms, including the quasi-long-range ordered phase and the vortex lattice phase [PRL 116, 097206 (2016)]. Here, by Monte Carlo simulations using an effective worm algorithm, we show that by controlling the vortex core energy, the antiferromagnetic Potts model can also exhibit the two topological phases, more interestingly, the two topological phases can overlap with each other.

Monte Carlo simulation of quantum Potts model

Using Monte Carlo simulations in the frame of stochastic series expansion (SSE), we study the three-state quantum Potts model. The cluster algorithm we used is a direct generalization of that for the quantum Ising model. The simulations include the one dimensional and two dimensional ferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model and the two dimensional antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model. Our results show that the phase transition of the one dimensional ferromagnetic quantum Potts model belongs to the same universality class of the two dimensional classical Potts model, the two dimensional ferromagnetic quantum Potts model undergoes a first order transition, which is also in analogy to its classical correspondence. The phase transition of the antiferromagnetic quantum Potts model is continuous, whose universality class belongs to the three-dimensional classical XY model, owing to an `emergent' O(2) symmetry at the critical point, although its ordered phase breaks the Z_6 symmetry.

Emergent O(n) Symmetry in a series of three-dimensional Potts Models

We study the q-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in one lattice direction, and antiferromagnetic interactions in the two other directions. As the temperature T decreases, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition that fits in the universality class of the 3D O(n) model with n=q-1. This conclusion is based on the estimated critical exponents, and histograms of the order parameter. At even smaller T we find, for q=4 and 5, a first-order transition to a phase with a different type of long-range order. This long-range order dissolves at T=0, and the system effectively reduces to a disordered two-dimensional Potts antiferromagnet. These results are obtained by means of Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling.

Percolation of the Site Random-Cluster Model by Monte Carlo Method

Herein, we propose a site random cluster model by introducing an additional cluster weight in the partition function of the traditional site percolation. To simulate the model on a square lattice, we combine the color-assignation and the Swendsen-Wang methods together to design a highly efficient cluster algorithm with a small critical slowing-down phenomenon. To verify whether or not it is consistent with the bond random cluster model, we measure several quantities such as the wrapping probability $R_e$, the percolation strength $P_\infty$, and the magnetic susceptibility per site $χ_p$ as well as two exponents such as the thermal exponent $y_t$ and the fractal dimension $y_h$ of the largest cluster. We find that for different exponents of cluster weight q=1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4, the numerical estimation of the exponents $y_t$ and $y_h$ are consistent with the theoretical values. The universalities of the site random cluster model and the bond random cluster model are completely identical. For larger values of $q$, we find obvious signatures of the first-order percolation transition by the histograms and the hysteresis loops of the percolation strength and the energy per site. Our results are helpful for the understanding of the percolation of traditional statistical models.

Trimer superfluid and supersolid on two-dimensional optical lattices

By the photoassociation method, the trimer superfluid phase disappears in the one dimensional state-dependent optical lattice if the ratio of the three-body interaction $W$ to the trimer tunneling $J$is kept at $W/J=12$ [Phys Rev A. {\bf 90}, 033622(2014)]. To search for a trimer superfluid and trimer supersolid, we load the cold atom into two-dimensional lattices, whose coordinate number $z$ and kinetic energy $-zJ$ are respectively larger and lower than those of a one dimensional lattice. Herein, we study the Bose-Hubbard model, which has an additional trimer tunneling term, a three-body interaction and a next-nearest repulsion. The on-site trimer and trimer superfluid exist if the on-site two-body repulsion and three-body repulsion are smaller than some thresholds. With atom-tunneling terms, the phase transitions from trimer superfluid phase to both atom superfluid and atom supersolid phases are first order. With $W/J=12$, in a one dimensional lattice, the trimer superfluid phase does not exist at all. In contrast, the trimer superfluid phase, exists in the lower density regions $0 \textless ρ\textless2$ on the square lattice if $J$ is not very large. The trimer superfluid phase emerges in a wider range $0 \textless ρ\textless3$ in the triangular lattice, or in the cubic lattice ($z=6$). When the three-body interaction is turned on, a trimer supersolid phase emerges due to the classical degeneracy between the quasi trimer solid and the trimer solid being broken by the quantum fluctuation. The phase transitions from the trimer supersolid phase to quasi trimer solid are first order and the phase transition from the trimer supersolid phase to trimer solid is continuous. Our results, obtained by mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo methods, will be helpful in realizing the trimer superfluid and supersolid by cold atom experiments.

Reentrance of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transitions in three-state Potts antiferromagnetic thin film

Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling, we study three-state Potts antiferromagnet on layered square lattice with two and four layers $L_z=2$ and $4$. As temperature decreases, the system develops quasi-long-range order via a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at finite temperature $T_{c1}$. For $L_z=4$, as temperature is further lowered, a long-range order breaking the $Z_6$ symmetry develops at a second transition at $T_{c2} < T_{c1}$. The transition at $T_{c2}$ is also Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like, but has magnetic critical exponent $η=1/9$ instead of the conventional value $η= 1/4$. The emergent $U(1)$ symmetry is clearly demonstrated in the quasi-long-range ordered region $T_{c2} \leq T \leq T_{c1}$.

Critical properties of the Hintermann-Merlini model

Many critical properties of the Hintermann-Merlini model are known exactly through the mapping to the eight-vertex model. Wu [J. Phys. C {\bf 8}, 2262 (1975)] calculated the spontaneous magnetizations of the model on two sublattices by relating them to the conjectured spontaneous magnetization and polarization of the eight-vertex model, respectively. The latter conjecture remains unproved. In this paper, we numerically study the critical properties of the model by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. All analytic predictions for the model are confirmed by our numerical results. The central charge $c=1$ is found for the critical manifold investigated. In addition, some unpredicted geometry properties of the model are studied. Fractal dimensions of the largest Ising clusters on two sublattices are determined. The fractal dimension of the largest Ising cluster on the sublattice A takes fixed value $D_{\rm a}=1.888(2)$, while that for sublattice B varies continuously with the parameters of the model.

Ising-like phase transition of an n-component Eulerian face-cubic model

By means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis, we find a critical line of an n-component Eulerian face-cubic model on the square lattice and the simple cubic lattice in the region v>1, where v is the bond weight. The phase transition belongs to the Ising universality class independent of n. The critical properties of the phase transition can also be captured by the percolation of the complement of the Eulerian graph.

Potts and percolation models on bowtie lattices

We give the exact critical frontier of the Potts model on bowtie lattices. For the case of $q=1$, the critical frontier yields the thresholds of bond percolation on these lattices, which are exactly consistent with the results given by Ziff et al [J. Phys. A 39, 15083 (2006)]. For the $q=2$ Potts model on the bowtie-A lattice, the critical point is in agreement with that of the Ising model on this lattice, which has been exactly solved. Furthermore, we do extensive Monte Carlo simulations of Potts model on the bowtie-A lattice with noninteger $q$. Our numerical results, which are accurate up to 7 significant digits, are consistent with the theoretical predictions. We also simulate the site percolation on the bowtie-A lattice, and the threshold is $s_c=0.5479148(7)$. In the simulations of bond percolation and site percolation, we find that the shape-dependent properties of the percolation model on the bowtie-A lattice are somewhat different from those of an isotropic lattice, which may be caused by the anisotropy of the lattice.

Exact critical points of the O($n$) loop model on the martini and the 3-12 lattices

We derive the exact critical line of the O($n$) loop model on the martini lattice as a function of the loop weight $n$.A finite-size scaling analysis based on transfer matrix calculations is also performed. The numerical results coincide with the theoretical predictions with an accuracy up to 9 decimal places. In the limit $n\to 0$, this gives the exact connective constant $μ=1.7505645579...$ of self-avoiding walks on the martini lattice. Using similar numerical methods, we also study the O($n$) loop model on the 3-12 lattice. We obtain similarly precise agreement with the exact critical points given by Batchelor [J. Stat. Phys. 92, 1203 (1998)].

Critical frontier for the Potts and percolation models on triangular-type and kagome-type lattices II: Numerical analysis

In a recent paper (arXiv:0911.2514), one of us (FYW) considered the Potts model and bond and site percolation on two general classes of two-dimensional lattices, the triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and obtained closed-form expressions for the critical frontier with applications to various lattice models. For the triangular-type lattices Wu's result is exact, and for the kagome-type lattices Wu's expression is under a homogeneity assumption. The purpose of the present paper is two-fold: First, an essential step in Wu's analysis is the derivation of lattice-dependent constants $A, B, C$ for various lattice models, a process which can be tedious. We present here a derivation of these constants for subnet networks using a computer algorithm. Secondly, by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on numerical transfer matrix calculations, we deduce critical properties and critical thresholds of various models and assess the accuracy of the homogeneity assumption. Specifically, we analyze the $q$-state Potts model and the bond percolation on the 3-12 and kagome-type subnet lattices $(n\times n):(n\times n)$, $n\leq 4$, for which the exact solution is not known. To calibrate the accuracy of the finite-size procedure, we apply the same numerical analysis to models for which the exact critical frontiers are known. The comparison of numerical and exact results shows that our numerical determination of critical thresholds is accurate to 7 or 8 significant digits. This in turn infers that the homogeneity assumption determines critical frontiers with an accuracy of 5 decimal places or higher. Finally, we also obtained the exact percolation thresholds for site percolation on kagome-type subnet lattices $(1\times 1):(n\times n)$ for $1\leq n \leq 6$.

Percolation and critical O($n$) loop configurations

We study a percolation problem based on critical loop configurations of the O($n$) loop model on the honeycomb lattice. We define dual clusters as groups of sites on the dual triangular lattice that are not separated by a loop, and investigate the the bond-percolation properties of these dual clusters. The universal properties at the percolation threshold are argued to match those of Kasteleyn-Fortuin random clusters in the critical Potts model. This relation is checked numerically by means of cluster simulations of several O($n$) models in the range $1\leq n \leq 2$. The simulation results include the percolation threshold for several values of $n$, as well as the universal exponents associated with bond dilution and the size distribution of the diluted clusters at the percolation threshold. Our numerical results for the exponents are in agreement with existing Coulomb gas results for the random-cluster model, which confirms the relation between both models. We discuss the renormalization flow of the bond-dilution parameter $p$ as a function of $n$, and provide an expression that accurately describes a line of unstable fixed points as a function of $n$, corresponding with the percolation threshold. Furthermore, the renormalization scenario indicates the existence, in $p$ versus $n$ diagram, another line of fixed points at $p=1$, which is stable with respect to $p$.

Geometric properties of two-dimensional O(n) loop configurations

We study the fractal geometry of O($n$) loop configurations in two dimensions by means of scaling and a Monte Carlo method, and compare the results with predictions based on the Coulomb gas technique. The Monte Carlo algorithm is applicable to models with noninteger $n$ and uses local updates. Although these updates typically lead to nonlocal modifications of loop connectivities, the number of operations required per update is only of order one. The Monte Carlo algorithm is applied to the O($n$) model for several values of $n$, including noninteger ones. We thus determine scaling exponents that describe the fractal nature of O($n$) loops at criticality. The results of the numerical analysis agree with the theoretical predictions.
