Local Invariant Structures in the Dynamics of Capillary Water Jet

Physical experiments show that a capillary water jet is exponentially unstable under long wave perturbations, while remaining stable under short wave perturbations. Measurements indicate that the exponential growth rate in the long wave regime agrees quantitatively with the classical predictions of Rayleigh and Plateau, known as \emph{Rayleigh-Plateau instability}. In this paper, we provide a mathematical justification of these experimental observations. The motion of the water jet is modeled by an axisymmetric irrotational Eulerian free-boundary system governed by surface tension. We prove that the (un)stable directions in the linearized system, corresponding to long wave perturbations, are indeed tangent to a (un)stable invariant manifold of the full nonlinear system. On the other hand, the elliptic directions, corresponding to short wave perturbations, are indeed tangent to a center invariant set in a generalized sense. These results give a positive answer to the question raised by Lin-Zeng concerning the existence of invariant manifolds for Eulerian free-boundary systems. A notable finding is the existence of infinite dimensional hyperbolic invariant manifolds in the dynamics of infinitely long capillary water jet, in absence of spectral gap. The major methodological contribution is the construction of ``paradifferential propagator" corresponding to linear paradifferential hyperbolic systems, effectively balancing the loss of regularity due to quasilinearity. The method can be generalized to a broad class of quasilinear problems.

Global well-posedness of a 2D fluid-structure interaction problem with free surface

This paper is devoted to the analysis of the incompressible Euler equation in a time-dependent fluid domain, whose interface evolution is governed by the law of linear elasticity. Our main result asserts that the Cauchy problem is globally well-posed in time for any irrotational initial data in the energy space, without any smallness assumption. We also prove continuity with respect to the initial data and the propagation of regularity. The main novelty is that no dissipative effect is assumed in the system. In the absence of parabolic regularization, the key observation is that the system can be transformed into a nonlinear Schr\"odinger-type equation, to which dispersive estimates are applied. This allows us to construct solutions that are very rough from the point of view of fluid dynamics-the initial fluid velocity has merely one-half derivative in $L^2$. The main difficulty is that the problem is critical in the energy space with respect to several key inequalities from harmonic analysis. The proof incorporates new estimates for the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator in the low-regularity regime, including refinements of paralinearization formulas and shape derivative formulas, which played a key role in the analysis of water waves.

Paracomposition Operators and Paradifferential Reducibility

Reducibility methods, aiming to simplify systems by conjugating them to those with constant coefficients, are crucial for studying the existence of quasiperiodic solutions. In KAM theory for PDEs, these methods help address the invertibility of linearized operators that arise in a Nash-Moser/KAM type scheme. The goal of this paper is to prove paradifferential reducibility results, enabling the reduction of nonlinear equations themselves, rather than just their linearizations, to constant coefficient form, modulo smoothing terms. As an initial application, we demonstrate the existence of quasiperiodic solutions for certain hyperbolic systems. Despite the small denominator problem, our proof does not rely on traditional Nash-Moser/KAM-type schemes, but instead on the Banach fixed point theorem. To achieve this, we develop two key toolsets. The first focuses on the calculus of paracomposition operators introduced by Alinhac, interpreted as the flow map of a paraproduct vector field. We refine this approach to establish new estimates that precisely capture the dependence on the diffeomorphism in question. The second toolset addresses two classical reducibility problems, one for matrix differential operators and the other for nearly parallel vector fields on torus. We resolve these problems by paralinearizing the conjugacy equation and exploiting, at the paradifferential level, the specific algebraic structure of conjugacy problems, akin to Zehnder's approximate Nash-Moser approach.

KAM via Standard Fixed Point Theorems

With a mere usage of well-established properties of para-differential operators, the conjugacy equations in several model KAM problems are converted to para-homological equations solvable by standard fixed point argument. Such discovery greatly simplifies KAM proofs, renders the traditional KAM iteration steps unnecessary, and may suggest a systematic scheme of finding quasi-periodic solutions of realistic magnitude.

On the Cauchy Problem of Spherical Capillary Water Waves

The spherical capillary water waves equation describes the motion of an almost spherical water droplet under zero gravity governed by water-air interface tension. Using para-differential calculus on compact Lie groups and homogeneous spaces developed by the author, the system is symmetrized into a quasi-linear dispersive para-differential equation of order 1.5 defined on the 2-sphere. An immediate consequence of this symmetrization is a new proof of local well-posedness of the system under much weaker regularity assumption compared to previous results.

Toolbox of Para-differential Calculus on Compact Lie Groups

This paper provides a toolbox of para-differential calculus on compact Lie groups. The toolbox is based on representation theory of compact Lie groups and contains exact formulas of symbolic calculus. Para-differential operators are constructed in a global, coordinate-free manner, giving lower order terms in symbolic calculus a clear form. The toolbox helps to understand non-local, nonlinear differential operators defined on certain manifolds with high symmetry.

Para-differential Calculus on Compact Lie Groups and Spherical Capillary Water Waves

This paper provides a para-differential calculus toolbox on compact Lie groups and homogeneous spaces. It helps to understand non-local, nonlinear partial differential operators with low regularity on manifolds with high symmetry. In particular, the paper provides a para-linearization formula for the Dirichlet-Neumann operator of a distorted 2-sphere, a key ingredient in understanding long-time behaviour of spherical capillary water waves. As an initial application, the paper provides a new proof of local well-posedness for spherical capillary water waves equation under weaker regularity assumptions compared to previous results.

Longtime Dynamics of Irrotational Spherical Water Drops: Initial Notes

In this note, we propose several unsolved problems concerning the irrotational oscillation of a water droplet under zero gravity. We will derive the governing equation of this physical model, and convert it to a quasilinear dispersive partial differential equation defined on the sphere, which formally resembles the capillary water waves equation but describes oscillation defined on curved manifold instead. Three types of unsolved mathematical problems related to this model will be discussed in observation of hydrodynamical experiments under zero gravity: (1) Strichartz type inequalities for the linearized problem (2) existence of periodic solutons (3) normal form reduction and generic lifespan estimate. It is pointed out that all of these problems are closely related to certain Diophantine equations, especially the third one.

Strichartz and Multi-linear Estimates for the One-dimensional Periodic Dysthe equation

This paper presents Strichartz estimates for the linearized 1D periodic Dysthe equation on the torus, namely estimate of the $L^6_{x,t}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ norm of the solution in terms of the initial data, and estimate of the $L^4_{x,t}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ norm in terms of the Bourgain space norm. The paper also presents other results such as bilinear and trilinear estimates pertaining to local well-posedness of the 1-dimensional periodic Dysthe equation in a suitable Bourgain space, and ill-posedness results in Sobolev spaces.

Long Time Behavior of a Quasilinear Hyperbolic System Modelling Elastic Membranes

The paper studies the long time behavior of a system that describes the motion of a piece of elastic membrane driven by surface tension and inner air pressure. The system is a degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic one that involves the mean curvature, and also includes a damping term that models the dissipative nature of genuine physical systems. With the presence of damping, a small perturbation of the sphere converges exponentially in time to the sphere, and without the damping the evolution that is $\varepsilon$-close to the sphere has life span longer than $\varepsilon^{-1/6}$. Both results are proved using a new Nash-Moser-Hörmander type theorem proved by Baldi and Haus.

Schauder Type Estimates for a Class of Hypoelliptic Operators

The present paper aims to generalize the Schauder estimate for a class of higher-order hypo-elliptic operators. The results in the present paper apply to parabolic equations of higher order and, for example, operators like $\partial_t^2-\partial_x^3$. Generalization to systems is also directly obtained.
