Open-Linguistic Concept Unified Learning for Cross-Site Interpretable Dermatology Image Diagnosis

Human-interpretable computer-aided diagnosis is crucial for clinical decision making. Concept-based models excel by providing transparent reasoning and enabling post-hoc, clinician-in-the-loop interventions. However, their rigid dataset-specific adaptation inherently restricts cross-site generalization. Applying them across diverse modalities, such as dermoscopic and clinical photographs, is challenging due to heterogeneous concept taxonomies varying in availability, granularity, and semantics across cohorts. Consequently, adapting Foundation Vision-Language Models (FVLMs) demands costly label engineering and repeated post-training. Existing intervention mechanisms remain rigidly tied to predefined concepts, lacking adaptability and hindering scalable dermatology CAD deployment. To address these bottlenecks, we propose UniCon, an open-linguistic unified concept learning framework for multimodal interpretable vision-language diagnosis. UniCon resolves these challenges through three contributions: (1) A shared semantic representation space via a unified concept prototype codebook, seamlessly coordinating heterogeneous concept systems across modalities without dataset-specific retraining. (2) Open-linguistic based multi-faceted semantic specifications to overcome sparse textual label limitations, improving boundary sensitivity in uncertain clinical contexts. (3) A robust, cross-site adjustable intervention interface powered by reliability-gated bottleneck aggregation, enabling consistent reasoning and transferable clinician corrections. Extensive experiments demonstrate that beyond securing top-tier diagnostic accuracy, UniCon successfully bridges disparate clinical taxonomies, unlocking unprecedented cross-site intervention capabilities. Code is available at https://github.com/wuchengyu123/UniCon.

CoWAM: Coordination Contracts for Selective Policy Intervention with WAMs

World Action Models (WAMs) augment robot policies with action-conditioned predicted futures, but a plausible future alone does not justify changing the action that a bimanual policy would execute. We present CoWAM, a selective intervention layer that expresses synchronization, role compatibility, and collision convergence as coordination contracts. Each contract combines typed admissibility checks with event-conditioned verification and calibrated intervention gates. CoWAM preserves the nominal action unless an alternative satisfies every active obligation and provides a clear, low-risk improvement; when the nominal action is also inadmissible, it invokes a predefined abstention fallback. To separate selector quality from proposal quality, all methods operate on identical candidate pools and commit their decisions before shared oracle labeling. Across eight simulated bimanual tasks, CoWAM improves coordination-valid selection by 16.7 percentage points over the contract-only variant and raises closed-loop success by 9.6 percentage points over the strongest selective baseline, while keeping harmful interventions below 1%. Together, these results establish coordination contracts as an effective interface for conservative policy intervention with predicted world-action evidence across coordination-rich bimanual tasks.

Inverse Density Problem for Linear Elasticity: Uniqueness from Local Measurements on a Partially Accessible Boundary

We consider the inverse boundary value problem in an elasticity system. It is proved that the density function $\rho$ and its derivatives at the boundary can be uniquely determined from the local Cauchy data. Furthermore, if the density function is analytic, we can uniquely determine the internal buried objects, as well as the unknown boundary and the boundary conditions imposed on it. Our methods mainly based on a precise characterization for the principal part of the difference between a special first-order singular solution and the fundamental solution in the $H^m$ norm, and the blow-up property for the boundary Sobolev norms of the volume potential corresponding to the fundamental solution.

A Krieger Embedding Theorem for Near Markov Sofic Shifts

Krieger's classical embedding theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for embedding a subshift into a mixing shift of finite type (SFT) as a proper subshift. The same result does not hold if one replaces mixing SFT by a mixing sofic shift. In this paper, we generalize Krieger's conditions to give necessary and sufficient conditions for embedding a subshift into a mixing (in fact irreducible) near Markov sofic shift (a special conjugacy-invariant class of sofic shifts). We also show that if the subshift to be embedded is irreducible sofic, then the conditions are finitely decidable.

MICCAI STSR 2025 Challenge: Semi-Supervised Teeth and Pulp Segmentation and CBCT-IOS Registration

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and Intraoral Scanning (IOS) are essential for digital dentistry, but annotated data scarcity limits automated solutions for pulp canal segmentation and cross-modal registration. To benchmark semi-supervised learning (SSL) in this domain, we organized the STSR 2025 Challenge at MICCAI 2025, featuring two tasks: (1) semi-supervised segmentation of teeth and pulp canals in CBCT, and (2) semi-supervised rigid registration of CBCT and IOS. We provided 60 labeled and 640 unlabeled IOS samples, plus 30 labeled and 250 unlabeled CBCT scans with varying resolutions and fields of view. The challenge attracted strong community participation, with top teams submitting open-source deep learning-based SSL solutions. For segmentation, leading methods used nnU-Net and Mamba-like State Space Models with pseudo-labeling and consistency regularization, achieving a Dice score of 0.967 and Instance Affinity of 0.738 on the hidden test set. For registration, effective approaches combined PointNetLK with differentiable SVD and geometric augmentation to handle modality gaps; hybrid neural-classical refinement enabled accurate alignment despite limited labels. All data and code are publicly available at https://github.com/ricoleehduu/STS-Challenge-2025 to ensure reproducibility.

MICCAI STS 2024 Challenge: Semi-Supervised Instance-Level Tooth Segmentation in Panoramic X-ray and CBCT Images

Orthopantomogram (OPGs) and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) are vital for dentistry, but creating large datasets for automated tooth segmentation is hindered by the labor-intensive process of manual instance-level annotation. This research aimed to benchmark and advance semi-supervised learning (SSL) as a solution for this data scarcity problem. We organized the 2nd Semi-supervised Teeth Segmentation (STS 2024) Challenge at MICCAI 2024. We provided a large-scale dataset comprising over 90,000 2D images and 3D axial slices, which includes 2,380 OPG images and 330 CBCT scans, all featuring detailed instance-level FDI annotations on part of the data. The challenge attracted 114 (OPG) and 106 (CBCT) registered teams. To ensure algorithmic excellence and full transparency, we rigorously evaluated the valid, open-source submissions from the top 10 (OPG) and top 5 (CBCT) teams, respectively. All successful submissions were deep learning-based SSL methods. The winning semi-supervised models demonstrated impressive performance gains over a fully-supervised nnU-Net baseline trained only on the labeled data. For the 2D OPG track, the top method improved the Instance Affinity (IA) score by over 44 percentage points. For the 3D CBCT track, the winning approach boosted the Instance Dice score by 61 percentage points. This challenge confirms the substantial benefit of SSL for complex, instance-level medical image segmentation tasks where labeled data is scarce. The most effective approaches consistently leveraged hybrid semi-supervised frameworks that combined knowledge from foundational models like SAM with multi-stage, coarse-to-fine refinement pipelines. Both the challenge dataset and the participants' submitted code have been made publicly available on GitHub (https://github.com/ricoleehduu/STS-Challenge-2024), ensuring transparency and reproducibility.

Elastic scattering by locally rough interfaces

In this paper, we present the first well-posedness result for elastic scattering by locally rough interfaces in both two and three dimensions. Inspired by the Helmholtz decomposition, we discover a fundamental identity for the stress vector, revealing an intrinsic relationship among the generalized stress vector, the Lame constants and certain tangential differential operators. This identity leads to two key limits for surface integrals involving scattered solutions, from which we deduce the first uniqueness result of direct problem for all frequencies. Through a detailed analysis, applying the steepest descent method, subsequently we derive the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding two-layered Green's tensor along with its explicit expression when the transmission coefficient equals 1. Finally, by leveraging properties of the Green's tensor, we establish the existence of solutions via the variational method and the boundary integral equation, thereby achieving the first well-posedness result for elastic scattering by rough interfaces.

Recovering discontinuous viscosity coefficients for inverse Stokes problems by boundary measurements

In this paper, we investigate the inverse Stokes problem of determining a discontinuous viscosity coefficient $\mu$ in a bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. By analyzing the singularity of the Dirichlet Green's functions in $H^1$-norm and constructing a specifically coupled Stokes-Brinkman system in a localized domain, we prove a global uniqueness theorem that the viscosity coefficient $\mu$ can be uniquely determined from boundary measurements.

Boundary determination of electromagnetic parameters from local data

In this paper, we extend and simplify the methods in [13] to improve the results on uniqueness of the boundary determination for the Maxwell equation. In particular, we show that the electromagnetic parameters are uniquely determined to infinite order at the boundary from the local admittance map, disregarding the presence of an unknown obstacle, where actually only the local Cauchy data of the fundamental solution are used. The proof mainly relies on an elaborate singularity analysis on certain singular solutions to the Maxwell equation.

Factorizable embeddings and the period of an irreducible sofic shift

Generalizing a result of MacDonald we give necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary subshift to embed into an irreducible sofic shift factoring through a given cover by an irreducible subshift of finite type (SFT). We obtain also necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary subshift to embed into an irreducible sofic shift factoring through \emph{some} sliding block code out of an irreducible SFT. We do that when the code is required to be surjective, and hence a factor code, and when it is required to be injective or almost invertible, or is allowed to be arbitrary. These results require concepts of the period of an irreducible sofic shift as well as a concept of a $p$-periodic subshift. Several equivalent formulations of the period are developed.

Boundary determination for the Schr\"{o}dinger equation with unknown embedded obstacles by local data

In this paper, we consider the inverse boundary value problem of the elliptic operator $\Delta+q$ in a fixed region $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with unknown embedded obstacles $D$. In particular, we give a new and simple proof to uniquely determine $q$ and all of its derivatives at the boundary from the knowledge of the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on $\partial\Omega$, disregarding the unknown obstacle, where in fact only the local Cauchy data of the fundamental solution is used. Our proof mainly depends on the rigorous singularity analysis on certain singular solutions and the volume potentials of fundamental solution, which is easy to extend to many other cases.

On uniqueness of inverse conductive scattering problem with unknown embedded obstacles

This paper is concerning the inverse conductive scattering of acoustic waves by a bounded inhomogeneous object with possibly embedded obstacles inside. A new uniqueness theorem is proved that the conductive object is uniquely determined by the fixed frequency far-field measurements, ignoring its contents. Meanwhile, the boundary informations of several related physical coefficients are also uniquely determined. The proof is mainly based on a detailed singularity analysis of solutions near the interface associated with a family of point sources or hypersingular point sources, which is deduced by the potential theory. Moreover, the other key ingredient in the proof is the well-posedness of the interior transmission problem with the conductivity boundary condition in the L^2 sense, where several sufficient conditions depending on the domain and physical coefficients are provided.

Shifts of Finite Type Obtained by Forbidding a Single Pattern

Given a finite word $w$, Guibas and Odlyzko (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) showed that the autocorrelation polynomial $\phi_w(t)$ of $w$, which records the set of self-overlaps of $w$, explicitly determines for each $n$, the number $|B_n(w)|$ of words of length $n$ that avoid $w$. We consider this and related problems from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics, focusing on the setting of $X_{\{w\}}$, the space of all bi-infinite sequences that avoid $w$. We first summarize and elaborate upon (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) and other work to show that the sequence $|B_n(w)|$ is equivalent to several invariants of $X_{\{w\}}$. We then give a finite-state labeled graphical representation $L_w$ of $X_{\{w\}}$ and show that $w$ can be recovered from the graph isomorphism class of the unlabeled version of $L_w$. Using $L_w$, we apply ideas from probability and Perron-Frobenius theory to obtain results comparing features of $X_{\{w\}}$ for different $w$. Next, we give partial results on the problem of classifying the spaces $X_{\{w\}}$ up to conjugacy. Finally, we extend some of our results to spaces of multi-dimensional arrays that avoid a given finite pattern.

Multi-modal Intermediate Feature Interaction AutoEncoder for Overall Survival Prediction of Esophageal Squamous Cell Cancer

Survival prediction for esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) is crucial for doctors to assess a patient's condition and tailor treatment plans. The application and development of multi-modal deep learning in this field have attracted attention in recent years. However, the prognostically relevant features between cross-modalities have not been further explored in previous studies, which could hinder the performance of the model. Furthermore, the inherent semantic gap between different modal feature representations is also ignored. In this work, we propose a novel autoencoder-based deep learning model to predict the overall survival of the ESCC. Two novel modules were designed for multi-modal prognosis-related feature reinforcement and modeling ability enhancement. In addition, a novel joint loss was proposed to make the multi-modal feature representations more aligned. Comparison and ablation experiments demonstrated that our model can achieve satisfactory results in terms of discriminative ability, risk stratification, and the effectiveness of the proposed modules.

STS MICCAI 2023 Challenge: Grand challenge on 2D and 3D semi-supervised tooth segmentation

Computer-aided design (CAD) tools are increasingly popular in modern dental practice, particularly for treatment planning or comprehensive prognosis evaluation. In particular, the 2D panoramic X-ray image efficiently detects invisible caries, impacted teeth and supernumerary teeth in children, while the 3D dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in orthodontics and endodontics due to its low radiation dose. However, there is no open-access 2D public dataset for children's teeth and no open 3D dental CBCT dataset, which limits the development of automatic algorithms for segmenting teeth and analyzing diseases. The Semi-supervised Teeth Segmentation (STS) Challenge, a pioneering event in tooth segmentation, was held as a part of the MICCAI 2023 ToothFairy Workshop on the Alibaba Tianchi platform. This challenge aims to investigate effective semi-supervised tooth segmentation algorithms to advance the field of dentistry. In this challenge, we provide two modalities including the 2D panoramic X-ray images and the 3D CBCT tooth volumes. In Task 1, the goal was to segment tooth regions in panoramic X-ray images of both adult and pediatric teeth. Task 2 involved segmenting tooth sections using CBCT volumes. Limited labelled images with mostly unlabelled ones were provided in this challenge prompt using semi-supervised algorithms for training. In the preliminary round, the challenge received registration and result submission by 434 teams, with 64 advancing to the final round. This paper summarizes the diverse methods employed by the top-ranking teams in the STS MICCAI 2023 Challenge.

Direct and inverse acoustic scattering by global rough surfaces

In this paper, we investigate on the direct and inverse scattering problem by an unbounded penetrable rough surface in a lossless medium. The cases that the transmission coefficient $\mu\neq1$ and $\mu=1$, which creates certain difficulties in the direct and inverse problem, respectively, are both considered. We first estalish the well-posedness of the direct problem using the integral equation method through an elaborate analysis. Then we carefully consider the singularity of the solutions to the problem with incident point source or hypersingular point source, where a simple and novel perspective is given for the derivation of the singularity. Finally, a global uniqueness result is proven for the inverse problem on the unique determination of the unbounded rough surface, the transmission coefficient and the wave number in the lower half plane from the measurements of the near field only on a line segment above the interface at a fixed frequency.

The obstacle scattering for the biharmonic equation

In this paper, we consider the obstacle scattering problem for biharmonic equations with a Dirichlet boundary condition in both two and three dimensions. Some basic properties are first derived for the biharmonic scattering solutions, which leads to a simple criterion for the uniqueness of the direct problem. Then a new type far-field pattern is introduced, where the correspondence between the far-field pattern and scattered field is established. Based on these properties, we prove the well-posedness of the direct problem in associated function spaces by utilizing the boundary integral equation method, which relys on a natural decomposition of the biharmonic operator and the theory of the pseudodifferential operator. Furthermore, the inverse problem for determining the obstacle is studied. By establishing some novel reciprocity relations between the far-field pattern and scattered field, we show that the obstacle can be uniquely recovered from the measurements at a fixed frequency.

MMFusion: Multi-modality Diffusion Model for Lymph Node Metastasis Diagnosis in Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide and ranks sixth in cancer-related mortality. Accurate computer-assisted diagnosis of cancer progression can help physicians effectively customize personalized treatment plans. Currently, CT-based cancer diagnosis methods have received much attention for their comprehensive ability to examine patients' conditions. However, multi-modal based methods may likely introduce information redundancy, leading to underperformance. In addition, efficient and effective interactions between multi-modal representations need to be further explored, lacking insightful exploration of prognostic correlation in multi-modality features. In this work, we introduce a multi-modal heterogeneous graph-based conditional feature-guided diffusion model for lymph node metastasis diagnosis based on CT images as well as clinical measurements and radiomics data. To explore the intricate relationships between multi-modal features, we construct a heterogeneous graph. Following this, a conditional feature-guided diffusion approach is applied to eliminate information redundancy. Moreover, we propose a masked relational representation learning strategy, aiming to uncover the latent prognostic correlations and priorities of primary tumor and lymph node image representations. Various experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The code is available at https://github.com/wuchengyu123/MMFusion.
