Stabilizing period-doubled density waves by spin-orbit coupling in Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

In atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices, mean-field energy can support the existence of period-doubled density waves, which are similar to Bloch waves but have the double periodicity of the underlying lattice potentials. However, they are dynamically unstable. Here, we propose to use the spin-orbit coupling to stabilize the period-doubled density waves. The stabilization mechanism is revealed to relate to interaction-induced spontaneous symmetry breaking of the spin-flip parity symmetry.

HiDiff: Hybrid Diffusion Framework for Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation has been significantly advanced with the rapid development of deep learning (DL) techniques. Existing DL-based segmentation models are typically discriminative; i.e., they aim to learn a mapping from the input image to segmentation masks. However, these discriminative methods neglect the underlying data distribution and intrinsic class characteristics, suffering from unstable feature space. In this work, we propose to complement discriminative segmentation methods with the knowledge of underlying data distribution from generative models. To that end, we propose a novel hybrid diffusion framework for medical image segmentation, termed HiDiff, which can synergize the strengths of existing discriminative segmentation models and new generative diffusion models. HiDiff comprises two key components: discriminative segmentor and diffusion refiner. First, we utilize any conventional trained segmentation models as discriminative segmentor, which can provide a segmentation mask prior for diffusion refiner. Second, we propose a novel binary Bernoulli diffusion model (BBDM) as the diffusion refiner, which can effectively, efficiently, and interactively refine the segmentation mask by modeling the underlying data distribution. Third, we train the segmentor and BBDM in an alternate-collaborative manner to mutually boost each other. Extensive experimental results on abdomen organ, brain tumor, polyps, and retinal vessels segmentation datasets, covering four widely-used modalities, demonstrate the superior performance of HiDiff over existing medical segmentation algorithms, including the state-of-the-art transformer- and diffusion-based ones. In addition, HiDiff excels at segmenting small objects and generalizing to new datasets. Source codes are made available at https://github.com/takimailto/HiDiff.

High-density single-atom electrocatalytic centers on two-dimensional topological platinum tellurides with Te-vacancy superstructure

Chemical activation of the intrinsically inert basal planes of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is crucial for developing high-efficiency electrocatalysts for energy technology applications. Here we report the discovery of an efficient TMD-based topological catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), containing high-density single-atom reactive centers on a few-layer (7x7)-PtTe2-x superstructure with a Te-vacancy density of x. Compared with pristine Pt(111), PtTe2, and (2x2)-PtTe2-x, (7x7)-PtTe2-x exhibits superior HER performance owing to its substantially increased density of undercoordinated Pt sites, and displays exceptional catalytic stability when operating at high current densities. Our first-principles calculations confirm that multiple types of undercoordinated Pt sites on (7x7)-PtTe2-x exhibit favorable hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energies, and that the reactive sites can further increase their population upon increasing hydrogen coverage. Both the (2x2)- and (7x7)-PtTe2-x are also shown to possess nontrivial band topology with robust edge states that may further facilitate HER.

FLDM-VTON: Faithful Latent Diffusion Model for Virtual Try-on

Despite their impressive generative performance, latent diffusion model-based virtual try-on (VTON) methods lack faithfulness to crucial details of the clothes, such as style, pattern, and text. To alleviate these issues caused by the diffusion stochastic nature and latent supervision, we propose a novel Faithful Latent Diffusion Model for VTON, termed FLDM-VTON. FLDM-VTON improves the conventional latent diffusion process in three major aspects. First, we propose incorporating warped clothes as both the starting point and local condition, supplying the model with faithful clothes priors. Second, we introduce a novel clothes flattening network to constrain generated try-on images, providing clothes-consistent faithful supervision. Third, we devise a clothes-posterior sampling for faithful inference, further enhancing the model performance over conventional clothes-agnostic Gaussian sampling. Extensive experimental results on the benchmark VITON-HD and Dress Code datasets demonstrate that our FLDM-VTON outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and is able to generate photo-realistic try-on images with faithful clothing details.

Low-dose CT Denoising with Language-engaged Dual-space Alignment

While various deep learning methods were proposed for low-dose computed tomography (CT) denoising, they often suffer from over-smoothing, blurring, and lack of explainability. To alleviate these issues, we propose a plug-and-play Language-Engaged Dual-space Alignment loss (LEDA) to optimize low-dose CT denoising models. Our idea is to leverage large language models (LLMs) to align denoised CT and normal dose CT images in both the continuous perceptual space and discrete semantic space, which is the first LLM-based scheme for low-dose CT denoising. LEDA involves two steps: the first is to pretrain an LLM-guided CT autoencoder, which can encode a CT image into continuous high-level features and quantize them into a token space to produce semantic tokens derived from the LLM's vocabulary; and the second is to minimize the discrepancy between the denoised CT images and normal dose CT in terms of both encoded high-level features and quantized token embeddings derived by the LLM-guided CT autoencoder. Extensive experimental results on two public LDCT denoising datasets demonstrate that our LEDA can enhance existing denoising models in terms of quantitative metrics and qualitative evaluation, and also provide explainability through language-level image understanding. HOPE: Hybrid-granularity Ordinal Prototype Learning for Progression Prediction of Mild Cognitive Impairment

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is often at high risk of progression to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Existing works to identify the progressive MCI (pMCI) typically require MCI subtype labels, pMCI vs. stable MCI (sMCI), determined by whether or not an MCI patient will progress to AD after a long follow-up. However, prospectively acquiring MCI subtype data is time-consuming and resource-intensive; the resultant small datasets could lead to severe overfitting and difficulty in extracting discriminative information. Inspired by that various longitudinal biomarkers and cognitive measurements present an ordinal pathway on AD progression, we propose a novel Hybrid-granularity Ordinal PrototypE learning (HOPE) method to characterize AD ordinal progression for MCI progression prediction. First, HOPE learns an ordinal metric space that enables progression prediction by prototype comparison. Second, HOPE leverages a novel hybrid-granularity ordinal loss to learn the ordinal nature of AD via effectively integrating instance-to-instance ordinality, instance-to-class compactness, and class-to-class separation. Third, to make the prototype learning more stable, HOPE employs an exponential moving average strategy to learn the global prototypes of NC and AD dynamically. Experimental results on the internal ADNI and the external NACC datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed HOPE over existing state-of-the-art methods as well as its interpretability. Roadmap on Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

In recent years, the field of metal-halide perovskite emitters has rapidly emerged as a new community in solid-state lighting. Their exceptional optoelectronic properties have contributed to the rapid rise in external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) from <1% (in 2014) to approaching 30% (in 2023) across a wide range of wavelengths. However, several challenges still hinder their commercialization, including the relatively low EQEs of blue/white devices, limited EQEs in large-area devices, poor device stability, as well as the toxicity of the easily accessible lead components and the solvents used in the synthesis and processing of PeLEDs. This roadmap addresses the current and future challenges in PeLEDs across fundamental and applied research areas, by sharing the community's perspectives. This work will provide the field with practical guidelines to advance PeLED development and facilitate more rapid commercialization.

Wannier solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with a flat-band

We investigate families of soliton solutions in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate embedded in an optical lattice, which bifurcate from the nearly flat lowest band. Unlike the conventional gap solitons the obtained solutions have the shape well approximated by a Wannier function (or a few Wannier functions) of the underlying linear Hamiltonian with amplitudes varying along the family and with nearly constant widths. The Wannier solitons (WSs) sharing all symmetries of the system Hamiltonian are found to be stable. Such solutions allow for the construction of Wannier breathers, that can be viewed as nonlinearly coupled one-hump solitons. The breathers are well described by a few-mode model and manifest stable behavior either in an oscillatory regime with balanced average populations or in a self-trapping regime characterized by unbalanced atomic populations of the local potential minima (similarly to the conventional boson Josephson junction), with the frequencies controlled by the inter-atomic interactions.

Instabilities of a Bose-Einstein condensate with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in periodic potentials generate interesting physics on the instabilities of Bloch states. The lowest-energy Bloch states of BECs in pure nonlinear lattices are dynamically and Landau unstable, which breaks down BEC superfluidity. In this paper we propose to use an out-of-phase linear lattice to stabilize them. The stabilization mechanism is revealed by the averaged interaction. We further incorporate a constant interaction into BECs with mixed nonlinear and linear lattices, and reveal its effect on the instabilities of Bloch states in the lowest band.

BerDiff: Conditional Bernoulli Diffusion Model for Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation is a challenging task with inherent ambiguity and high uncertainty, attributed to factors such as unclear tumor boundaries and multiple plausible annotations. The accuracy and diversity of segmentation masks are both crucial for providing valuable references to radiologists in clinical practice. While existing diffusion models have shown strong capacities in various visual generation tasks, it is still challenging to deal with discrete masks in segmentation. To achieve accurate and diverse medical image segmentation masks, we propose a novel conditional Bernoulli Diffusion model for medical image segmentation (BerDiff). Instead of using the Gaussian noise, we first propose to use the Bernoulli noise as the diffusion kernel to enhance the capacity of the diffusion model for binary segmentation tasks, resulting in more accurate segmentation masks. Second, by leveraging the stochastic nature of the diffusion model, our BerDiff randomly samples the initial Bernoulli noise and intermediate latent variables multiple times to produce a range of diverse segmentation masks, which can highlight salient regions of interest that can serve as valuable references for radiologists. In addition, our BerDiff can efficiently sample sub-sequences from the overall trajectory of the reverse diffusion, thereby speeding up the segmentation process. Extensive experimental results on two medical image segmentation datasets with different modalities demonstrate that our BerDiff outperforms other recently published state-of-the-art methods. Our results suggest diffusion models could serve as a strong backbone for medical image segmentation.

Classification of radial non-radiative solutions to the 5D nonlinear wave equations

In this work we classify all radial non-radiative solutions to the 5D nonlinear wave equations with a wide range of energy critical nonlinearity. We show that such a solution always comes with two characteristic numbers. These characteristic numbers can be determined by either the radiation profile of the initial data or the asymptotic behaviour of the solution. In addition, two radial weakly non-radiative solutions with the same characteristic numbers must coincide with each other in the overlap part of their exterior regions. Finally we give a few applications of our theory on the global behaviours of solutions to the nonlinear wave equations.

Joint Attention-Driven Domain Fusion and Noise-Tolerant Learning for Multi-Source Domain Adaptation

As a study on the efficient usage of data, Multi-source Unsupervised Domain Adaptation transfers knowledge from multiple source domains with labeled data to an unlabeled target domain. However, the distribution discrepancy between different domains and the noisy pseudo-labels in the target domain both lead to performance bottlenecks of the Multi-source Unsupervised Domain Adaptation methods. In light of this, we propose an approach that integrates Attention-driven Domain fusion and Noise-Tolerant learning (ADNT) to address the two issues mentioned above. Firstly, we establish a contrary attention structure to perform message passing between features and to induce domain movement. Through this approach, the discriminability of the features can also be significantly improved while the domain discrepancy is reduced. Secondly, based on the characteristics of the unsupervised domain adaptation training, we design an Adaptive Reverse Cross Entropy loss, which can directly impose constraints on the generation of pseudo-labels. Finally, combining these two approaches, experimental results on several benchmarks further validate the effectiveness of our proposed ADNT and demonstrate superior performance over the state-of-the-art methods.

An inequality regarding non-radiative linear waves via a geometric method

In this work we consider the operator \[ (\mathbf{T} G) (x)= \int_{\mathbb{S}^2} G(x\cdot ω, ω) dω, \quad x\in \mathbb{R}^3, \; G\in L^2(\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{S}^2). \] This is the adjoint operator of the Radon transform. We manage to give an optimal $L^6$ decay estimate of $\mathbf{T} G$ near the infinity by a geometric method, if the function $G$ is compactly supported. As an application we give decay estimate of non-radiative solutions to the 3D linear wave equation in the exterior region $\{(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^3 \times \mathbb{R}: |x|>R+|t|\}$. This kind of decay estimate is useful in the channel of energy method for wave equations

Radiation fields and non-radiative solutions to the energy sub-critical wave equations

Radiation field and channel of energy method have become important tools in the study of nonlinear wave equations in recent years. In this work we give basic theory of radiation fields of free waves in the energy sub-critical case. We also show that the asymptotic behaviours of non-radiative solutions to a wide range of non-linear wave equations resemble those of non-radiative free waves. Our theory is completely given in the critical Sobolev spaces of the corresponding nonlinear wave equation and avoids any assumption on the energy of the solutions.

Asymptotic behaviour of non-radiative solution to the wave equations

In this work we consider weakly non-radiative solutions to both linear and non-linear wave equations. We first characterize all weakly non-radiative free waves, without the radial assumption. Then in dimension 3 we show that the initial data of non-radiative solutions to a wide range of nonlinear wave equations are similar to those of non-radiative free waves in term of asymptotic behaviour.

Spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap: even-petal-number necklacelike state and persistent flow

Spin-orbit coupling has novel spin-flip symmetries, a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate owns meaningful interactions, and a toroidal trap is topologically nontrivial. We incorporate the three together and study the ground-state phase diagram in a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate with a toroidal trap. The spin-flip symmetries give rise to two different interesting phases: persistent flows with a unit phase winding difference between three components, and necklace states with even petal-number. The existing parameter regimes and properties of these phases are characterized by two-dimension numerical calculations and an azimuthal analytical one-dimension model.

Sequential convolutional network for behavioral pattern extraction in gait recognition

As a unique and promising biometric, video-based gait recognition has broad applications. The key step of this methodology is to learn the walking pattern of individuals, which, however, often suffers challenges to extract the behavioral feature from a sequence directly. Most existing methods just focus on either the appearance or the motion pattern. To overcome these limitations, we propose a sequential convolutional network (SCN) from a novel perspective, where spatiotemporal features can be learned by a basic convolutional backbone. In SCN, behavioral information extractors (BIE) are constructed to comprehend intermediate feature maps in time series through motion templates where the relationship between frames can be analyzed, thereby distilling the information of the walking pattern. Furthermore, a multi-frame aggregator in SCN performs feature integration on a sequence whose length is uncertain, via a mobile 3D convolutional layer. To demonstrate the effectiveness, experiments have been conducted on two popular public benchmarks, CASIA-B and OU-MVLP, and our approach is demonstrated superior performance, comparing with the state-of-art methods.

Computational efficient deep neural network with difference attention maps for facial action unit detection

In this paper, we propose a computational efficient end-to-end training deep neural network (CEDNN) model and spatial attention maps based on difference images. Firstly, the difference image is generated by image processing. Then five binary images of difference images are obtained using different thresholds, which are used as spatial attention maps. We use group convolution to reduce model complexity. Skip connection and $\text{1}\times \text{1}$ convolution are used to ensure good performance even if the network model is not deep. As an input, spatial attention map can be selectively fed into the input of each block. The feature maps tend to focus on the parts that are related to the target task better. In addition, we only need to adjust the parameters of classifier to train different numbers of AU. It can be easily extended to varying datasets without increasing too much computation. A large number of experimental results show that the proposed CEDNN is obviously better than the traditional deep learning method on DISFA+ and CK+ datasets. After adding spatial attention maps, the result is better than the most advanced AU detection method. At the same time, the scale of the network is small, the running speed is fast, and the requirement for experimental equipment is low.
