Sodium and Potassium Signatures of Volcanic Satellites Orbiting Close-in Gas Giant Exoplanets

Extrasolar satellites are generally too small to be detected by nominal searches. By analogy to the most active body in the Solar System, Io, we describe how sodium (Na I) and potassium (K I) $\textit{gas}$ could be a signature of the geological activity venting from an otherwise hidden exo-Io. Analyzing $\sim$ a dozen close-in gas giants hosting robust alkaline detections, we show that an Io-sized satellite can be stable against orbital decay below a planetary tidal $\mathcal{Q}_p \lesssim 10^{11}$. This tidal energy is focused into the satellite driving a $\sim 10^{5 \pm 2}$ higher mass loss rate than Io's supply to Jupiter's Na exosphere, based on simple atmospheric loss estimates. The remarkable consequence is that several exo-Io column densities are on average $\textit{more than sufficient}$ to provide the $\sim$ 10$^{10 \pm 1}$ Na cm$^{-2}$ required by the equivalent width of exoplanet transmission spectra. Furthermore, the benchmark observations of both Jupiter's extended ($\sim 1000$ R$_J$) Na exosphere and Jupiter's atmosphere in transmission spectroscopy yield similar Na column densities that are purely exogenic in nature. As a proof of concept, we fit the "high-altitude" Na at WASP 49-b with an ionization-limited cloud similar to the observed Na profile about Io. Moving forward, we strongly encourage time-dependent ingress and egress monitoring along with spectroscopic searches for other volcanic volatiles.

Bond strengthening in dense H2O and implications to planetary composition

H2O is an important constituent in planetary bodies, controlling habitability and, in geologically-active bodies, plate tectonics. At pressures within the interior of many planets, the H-bonds in H2O collapse into stronger, ionic bonds. Here we present agreement between X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy for the transition from ice-VII to ice-X occurring at a pressure of approximately 30.9 GPa by means of combining grain normalizing heat treatment via direct laser heating with static compression. This is evidenced by the emergence of the characteristic Raman mode of cuprite-like ice-X and an abrupt 2.5-fold increase in bulk modulus, implying a significant increase in bond strength. This is preceded by a transition from cubic ice-VII to a structure of tetragonal symmetry, ice-VIIt at 5.1 GPa. Our results significantly shift the mass/radius relationship of water-rich planets and define a high-pressure limit for release of chemically-bound water within the Earth, making the deep mantle a potential long-term reservoir of ancient water.

The duality of $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$ and $\mathfrak{gl}_k$ Gaudin models

We establish a duality of the non-periodic Gaudin model associated with superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$ and the non-periodic Gaudin model associated with algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_k$. The Hamiltonians of the Gaudin models are given by expansions of a Berezinian of an $(m+n)\times(m+n)$ matrix in the case of $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$ and of a column determinant of a $k\times k$ matrix in the case of $\mathfrak{gl}_k$. We obtain our results by proving Capelli type identities for both cases and comparing the results.

Solutions of $\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n}$ XXX Bethe ansatz equation and rational difference operators

We study solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations of the non-homogeneous periodic XXX model associated to super Yangian $\mathrm Y(\mathfrak{gl}_{m|n})$. To a solution we associate a rational difference operator $\mathcal D$ and a superspace of rational functions $W$. We show that the set of complete factorizations of $\mathcal D$ is in canonical bijection with the variety of superflags in $W$ and that each generic superflag defines a solution of the Bethe ansatz equation. We also give the analogous statements for the quasi-periodic supersymmetric spin chains.

The solutions of $\mathfrak{gl}_{M|N}$ Bethe ansatz equation and rational pseudodifferential operators

We describe a reproduction procedure which, given a solution of the $\mathfrak{gl}_{M|N}$ Gaudin Bethe ansatz equation associated to a tensor product of polynomial modules, produces a family $P$ of other solutions called the population. To a population we associate a rational pseudodifferential operator $R$ and a superspace $W$ of rational functions. We show that if at least one module is typical then the population $P$ is canonically identified with the set of minimal factorizations of $R$ and with the space of full superflags in $W$. We conjecture that the singular eigenvectors (up to rescaling) of all $\mathfrak{gl}_{M|N}$ Gaudin Hamiltonians are in a bijective correspondence with certain superspaces of rational functions.

Electron scattering wings on lines in interacting supernovae

We consider the effect of electron scattering on lines emitted as a result of supernova interaction with a circumstellar medium, assuming that the scattering occurs in ionized gas in the preshock circumstellar medium. The single scattering case gives the broad component in the limit of low optical depth, showing a velocity full width half maximum that is close to the thermal velocities of electrons. The line shape is approximately exponential at low velocities and steepens at higher velocities. At higher optical depths, the line profile remains exponential at low velocities, but wings strengthen with increasing optical depth. In addition to the line width, the ratio of narrow to broad (scattered) line strength is a possible diagnostic of the gas. The results depend on the density profile of the circumstellar gas, especially if the scattering and photon creation occur in different regions. We apply the scattering model to a number of supernovae, including Type IIn and Type Ia-CSM events. The asymmetry to the red found in some cases can be explained by scattering in a fast wind region which is indicated by observations.

A Model of the H$α$ and Na Transmission Spectrum of HD 189733b

This paper presents a detailed hydrostatic model of the upper atmosphere of HD 189733b, with the goal of constraining its temperature, particle densities, and radiation field over the pressure range $10^{-4}-10\, μ\rm bar$, where the observed H$α$ transmission spectrum is produced. The atomic hydrogen level population is computed including both collisional and radiative transition rates. The Ly$α$ resonant scattering is computed using a Monte-Carlo simulation. The model transmission spectra are in broad agreement with the data. Excitation of the H(2$\ell$) population is mainly by Ly$α$ radiative excitation due to the large Ly$α$ intensity. The density of H(2$\ell$) is nearly flat over two decades in pressure, and is optically thick to H$α$. Additional models computed for a range of the stellar Lyman continuum (LyC) flux suggest that the variability in H$α$ transit depth may be due to the variability in the stellar LyC. Since metal lines provide the dominant cooling of this part of the atmosphere, the atmosphere structure is sensitive to the density of species such as Mg and Na which may themselves be constrained by observations. Since the H$α$ and Na D lines have comparable absorption depths, we argue that the center of the Na D lines are also formed in the atomic layer where the H$α$ line is formed.

Near infrared spectroscopy of the type IIn SN 2010jl: evidence for high velocity ejecta

The Type IIn supernova SN 2010jl was relatively nearby and luminous, allowing detailed studies of the near-infrared (NIR) emission. We present 1 - 2.4 micron spectroscopy over the age range of 36 - 565 days from the earliest detection of the supernova. On day 36, the H lines show an unresolved narrow emission component along with a symmetric broad component that can be modeled as the result of electron scattering by a thermal distribution of electrons. Over the next hundreds of days, the broad components of the H lines shift to the blue by 700 km/s, as is also observed in optical lines. The narrow lines do not show a shift, indicating they originate in a different region. He I 1.0830 and 2.0587 micron lines both show an asymmetric broad emission component, with a shoulder on the blue side that varies in prominence and velocity from -5500 km/s on day 108 to -4000 km/s on day 219. This component may be associated with the higher velocity flow indicated by X-ray observations of the supernova. The absence of the feature in the H lines suggests that this is from a He rich ejecta flow. The He I 1.0830 micron feature has a narrow P Cygni line, with absorption extending to ~100 km/s and strengthening over the first 200 days, and an emission component which weakens with time. At day 403, the continuum emission becomes dominated by a blackbody spectrum with a temperature of ~1900 K, suggestive of dust emission.
