Evaluating 21st-Century Competencies in Postsecondary Curricula with Large Language Models: Performance Benchmarking and Reasoning-Based Prompting Strategies

The growing emphasis on 21st-century competencies in postsecondary education, intensified by the transformative impact of generative AI, underscores the need to evaluate how these competencies are embedded in curricula and how effectively academic programs align with evolving workforce and societal demands. Curricular Analytics, particularly recent generative AI-powered approaches, offer a promising data-driven pathway. However, analyzing 21st-century competencies requires pedagogical reasoning beyond surface-level information retrieval, and the capabilities of large language models in this context remain underexplored. In this study, we extend prior curricular analytics research by examining a broader range of curriculum documents, competency frameworks, and models. Using 7,600 manually annotated curriculum-competency alignment scores, we assess the informativeness of different curriculum sources, benchmark general-purpose LLMs for curriculum-to-competency mapping, and analyze error patterns. We further introduce a reasoning-based prompting strategy, Curricular CoT, to strengthen LLMs' pedagogical reasoning. Our results show that detailed instructional activity descriptions are the most informative type of curriculum document for competency analytics. Open-weight LLMs achieve accuracy comparable to proprietary models on coarse-grained tasks, demonstrating their scalability and cost-effectiveness for institutional use. However, no model reaches human-level precision in fine-grained pedagogical reasoning. Our proposed Curricular CoT yields modest improvements by reducing bias in instructional keyword inference and improving the detection of nuanced pedagogical evidence in long text. Together, these findings highlight the untapped potential of institutional curriculum documents and provide an empirical foundation for advancing AI-driven curricular analytics.

Statistical Analyses of Solar Active Region in SDO/HMI Magnetograms detected by Unsupervised Machine Learning Method DSARD

Solar active regions (ARs) are the places hosting the majority of solar eruptions. Studying the evolution and morphological features of ARs is not only of great significance to the understanding of the physical mechanisms of solar eruptions, but also beneficial for the hazardous space weather forecast. An automated DBSCAN-based Solar Active Regions Detection (DSARD) method for solar ARs observed in magnetograms is developed in this work, which is based on an unsupervised machine learning algorithm called Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN). The method is then employed to identify ARs on the magnetograms observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) during solar cycle 24 and the rising phase of solar cycle 25. The distributions of the number, area, magnetic flux, and the tilt angle of bipolar of ARs in latitudes and time intervals during solar cycle 24, as well as the butterfly diagram and drift velocities are obtained. Most of these statistical results based on our method are in agreement with previous studies, which also guarantees the validity of the method. In particular, the dipole tilt angles in ARs in solar cycle 24 and the rising phase of solar cycle 25 are analyzed which reveal that 13% and 16% of ARs, respectively, violate Hale's law.

RNA Secondary Structure Prediction Using Transformer-Based Deep Learning Models

The Human Genome Project has led to an exponential increase in data related to the sequence, structure, and function of biomolecules. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary research field that primarily uses computational methods to analyze large amounts of biological macromolecule data. Its goal is to discover hidden biological patterns and related information. Furthermore, analysing additional relevant information can enhance the study of biological operating mechanisms. This paper discusses the fundamental concepts of RNA, RNA secondary structure, and its prediction.Subsequently, the application of machine learning technologies in predicting the structure of biological macromolecules is explored. This chapter describes the relevant knowledge of algorithms and computational complexity and presents a RNA tertiary structure prediction algorithm based on ResNet. To address the issue of the current scoring function's unsuitability for long RNA, a scoring model based on ResNet is proposed, and a structure prediction algorithm is designed. The chapter concludes by presenting some open and interesting challenges in the field of RNA tertiary structure prediction.
