Fundamental Gap of Convex Domains in the Spheres (with Appendix B by Qi S. Zhang)

In [SWW], S. Seto, L. Wang and G. Wei proved that the gap between the first two Dirichlet eigenvalues of a convex domain in the unit sphere is at least as large as that for an associated operator on an interval with the same diameter, provided that the domain has the diameter at most $π/2$. In this paper, we extend Seto-Wang-Wei's result to convex domains in the unit sphere with diameter less than $π$.

Fake $13$-projective spaces with cohomogeneity one actions

We show that some embedded standard $13$-spheres in Shimada's exotic $15$-spheres have $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotient spaces, $P^{13}$s, that are fake real $13$-dimensional projective spaces, i.e., they are homotopy equivalent, but not diffeomorphic to the standard $\mathbb{R}\mathrm{P}^{13}$. As observed by F. Wilhelm and the second named author in [RW], the Davis $\mathsf{SO}(2)\times \mathsf{G}_2$ actions on Shimada's exotic $15$-spheres descend to the cohomogeneity one actions on the $P^{13}$s. We prove that the $P^{13}$s are diffeomorphic to well-known $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quotients of certain Brieskorn varieties, and that the Davis $\mathsf{SO}(2)\times \mathsf{G}_2$ actions on the $P^{13}$s are equivariantly diffeomorphic to well-known actions on these Brieskorn quotients. The $P^{13}$s are octonionic analogues of the Hirsch-Milnor fake $5$-dimensional projective spaces, $P^{5}$s. K. Grove and W. Ziller showed that the $P^{5}$s admit metrics of non-negative curvature that are invariant with respect to the Davis $\mathsf{SO}(2)\times \mathsf{SO}(3)$-cohomogeneity one actions. In contrast, we show that the $P^{13}$s do not support $\mathsf{SO}(2)\times \mathsf{G}_2$-invariant metrics with non-negative sectional curvature.

Martin compactification of a complete surface with negative curvature

In this paper we consider the Martin compactification, associated with the operator $\mathcal{L} = Δ-1$, of a complete non-compact surface $(Σ^2, ds^2)$ with negative curvature. In particular, we investigate positive eigenfunctions with eigenvalue one of the Laplace operator $Δ$ of $(Σ^2, ds^2)$ and prove a uniqueness result: such eigenfunctions are unique up to a positive constant multiple if they vanish on the part of the geometric boundary $S_\infty(Σ^2)$ of $Σ^2$ where the curvature is bounded above by a negative constant, and satisfy some growth estimate on the other part of $S_\infty(Σ^2)$ where the curvature approaches zero. This uniqueness result plays an essential role in our recent paper "Infinitesimal rigidity of steady gradient Ricci soliton in three dimension" in which we prove an infinitesimal rigidity theorem for deformations of certain three-dimensional collapsed gradient steady Ricci soliton with a non-trivial Killing vector field.

Infinitesimal rigidity of collapsed gradient steady Ricci solitons in dimension three

The only known example of collapsed three-dimensional complete gradient steady Ricci solitons so far is the 3D cigar soliton $N^2\times \mathbb{R}$, the product of Hamilton's cigar soliton $N^2$ and the real line $\mathbb{R}$ with the product metric. R. Hamilton has conjectured that there should exist a family of collapsed positively curved three-dimensional complete gradient steady solitons, with $\mathsf{S}^1$-symmetry, connecting the 3D cigar soliton. In this paper, we make the first initial progress and prove that the infinitesimal deformation at the 3D cigar soliton is non-essential. In Appendix A, we show that the 3D cigar soliton is the unique complete nonflat gradient steady Ricci soliton in dimension three that admits two commuting Killing vector fields.

Linear stability of Perelman's $ν$-entropy on symmetric spaces of compact type

Following Cao-Hamilton-Ilmanen, in this paper we study the linear stability of Perelman's $ν$-entropy on Einstein manifolds with positive Ricci curvature. We observe the equivalence between the linear stability restricted to the transversal traceless symmetric 2-tensors and the stability of Einstein manifolds with respect to the Hilbert action. As a main application, we give a full classification of linear stability of the $ν$-entropy on symmetric spaces of compact type. In particular, we exhibit many more linearly stable and linearly unstable examples than previously known and also the first linearly stable examples, other than the standard spheres, whose second variations are negative definite.

Warped product rigidity

In this paper we study the space of solutions to an overdetermined linear system involving the Hessian of functions. We show that if the solution space has dimension greater than one, then the underlying manifold has a very rigid warped product structure. We obtain a uniqueness result for prescribing the Ricci curvature of a warped product manifold over a fixed base. As an application, this warped product structure will be used to study warped product Einstein structures in "Uniqueness of warped product Einstein metrics and applications".

Uniqueness of warped product Einstein metrics and applications

We prove that complete warped product Einstein metrics with isometric bases, simply connected space form fibers, and the same Ricci curvature and dimension are isometric. In the compact case we also prove that the warping functions must be the same up to scaling, while in the non-compact case there are simple examples showing that the warping function is not unique. These results follow from a structure theorem for warped product Einstein spaces which is proven by applying the results in our earlier paper "Warped product rigidity" to a vector space of virtual Einstein warping functions. We also use the structure theorem to study gap phenomena for the dimension of the space of warping functions and the isometry group of a warped product Einstein metric.

Warped product Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces and homogeneous Ricci solitons

In this paper we consider connections between Ricci solitons and Einstein metrics on homogeneous spaces. We show that a semi-algebraic Ricci soliton admits an Einstein one-dimensional extension if the soliton derivation can be chosen to be normal. Using our previous work on warped product Einstein metrics, we show that every normal semi-algebraic Ricci soliton also admits a $k$-dimensional Einstein extension for any $k\geq 2$. We also prove converse theorems for these constructions and some geometric and topological structure results for homogeneous warped product Einstein metrics. In the appendix we give an alternative approach to semi-algebraic Ricci solitons which naturally leads to a definition of semi-algebraic Ricci solitons in the non-homogeneous setting.

On Bach flat warped product Einstein manifolds

In this paper we show that a compact warped product Einstein manifold with vanishing Bach tensor of dimension $n \geq 4$ is a finite quotient of a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional Einstein fiber. The fiber has constant curvature if $n=4$.

Gradient Yamabe Solitons on Warped Products

The special nature of gradient Yamabe soliton equation which was first observed by Cao-Sun-Zhang\cite{CaoSunZhang} shows that a complete gradient Yamabe soliton with non-constant potential function is either defined on the Euclidean space with rotational symmetry, or on the warped product of the real line with a manifold of constant scalar curvature. In this paper we consider the classification in the latter case. We show that a complete gradient steady Yamabe soliton on warped product is necessarily isometric to the Riemannian product. In the shrinking case, we show that there is a continuous family of complete gradient Yamabe shrinkers on warped products which are not isometric to the Riemannian product in dimension three and higher.

On the classification of warped product Einstein metrics

In this paper we take the perspective introduced by Case-Shu-Wei of studying warped product Einstein metrics through the equation for the Ricci curvature of the base space. They call this equation on the base the $m$-Quasi Einstein equation, but we will also call it the $(λ,n+m)$-Einstein equation. In this paper we extend the work of Case-Shu-Wei and some earlier work of Kim-Kim to allow the base to have non-empty boundary. This is a natural case to consider since a manifold without boundary often occurs as a warped product over a manifold with boundary, and in this case we get some interesting new canonical examples. We also derive some new formulas involving curvatures which are analogous to those for the gradient Ricci solitons. As an application, we characterize warped product Einstein metrics when the base is locally conformally flat.

Warped product Einstein metrics over spaces with constant scalar curvature

In this paper we study warped product Einstein metrics over spaces with constant scalar curvature. We call such a manifold rigid if the universal cover of the base is Einstein or is isometric to a product of Einstein manifolds. When the base is three dimensional and the dimension of the fiber is greater than one we show that the space is always rigid. We also exhibit examples of solvable four dimensional Lie groups that can be used as the base space of non-rigid warped product Einstein metrics showing that the result is not true in dimension greater than three. We also give some further natural curvature conditions that characterize the rigid examples in higher dimensions.

Cohomogeneity one manifolds with a small family of invariant metrics

In this paper, we classify compact simply connected cohomogeneity one manifolds up to equivariant diffeomorphism whose isotropy representation by the connected component of the principal isotropy subgroup has three or less irreducible summands. The manifold is either a bundle over a homogeneous space or an irreducible symmetric space. As a corollary such manifolds admit an invariant metric with non-negative sectional curvature.
