Machine learning identification of fractional-order vortex beam diffraction process

Fractional-order vortex beams possess fractional orbital angular momentum (FOAM) modes, which theoretically have the potential to increase transmission capacity infinitely. Therefore, they have significant application prospects in the fields of measurement, optical communication and micro-particle manipulation. However, when fractional-order vortex beams propagate in free space, the discontinuity of the helical phase makes them susceptible to diffraction in practical applications, thereby affecting the accuracy of OAM mode recognition and severely limiting the use of FOAM-based optical communication. Achieving machine learning recognition of fractional-order vortex beams under diffraction conditions is currently an urgent and unreported issue. Based on ResNet, a deep learning (DL) method of accurately recognizing the propagation distance and topological charge of fractional-order vortex beam diffraction process is proposed in this work. Utilizing both experimentally measured and numerically simulated intensity distributions, a dataset of vortex beam diffraction intensity patterns in atmospheric turbulence environments is created. An improved 101-layer ResNet structure based on transfer learning is employed to achieve accurate and efficient recognition of the FOAM model at different propagation distances. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately recognize FOAM modes with a propagation distance of 100 cm, a spacing of 5 cm, and a mode spacing of 0.1 under turbulent conditions, with an accuracy of 99.69%. This method considers the effect of atmospheric turbulence during spatial transmission, allowing the recognition scheme to achieve high accuracy even in special environments. It has the ability to distinguish ultra-fine FOAM modes and propagation distances, which cannot be achieved by traditional methods.

Quantum interferometers: principles and applications

Interference, which refers to the phenomenon associated with the superposition of waves, has played a crucial role in the advancement of physics and finds a wide range of applications in physical and engineering measurements. Interferometers are experimental setups designed to observe and manipulate interference. With the development of technology, many quantum interferometers have been discovered and have become cornerstone tools in the field of quantum physics. Quantum interferometers not only explore the nature of the quantum world but also have extensive applications in quantum information technology, such as quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum measurement. In this review, we analyze and summarize three typical quantum interferometers: the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometer, the N00N state interferometer, and the Franson interferometer. We focus on the principles and applications of these three interferometers. In the principles section, we present the theoretical models for these interferometers, including single-mode theory and multi-mode theory. In the applications section, we review the applications of these interferometers in quantum communication, computation, and measurement. We hope that this review article will promote the development of quantum interference in both fundamental science and practical engineering applications.

Controllable transitions among phase-matching conditions in a single nonlinear crystal

Entangled photon pairs are crucial resources for quantum information processing protocols. Via the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), we can generate these photon pairs using bulk nonlinear crystals. Traditionally, the crystal is designed to satisfy specific type of phase-matching condition. Here, we report controllable transitions among different types of phase-matching in a single periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. By carefully selecting pump conditions, we can satisfy different phase-matching conditions. This allows us to observe first-order type-II, fifth-order type-I, third-order type-0, and fifth-order type-II SPDCs. The temperature-dependent spectra of our source were also analyzed in detail. Finally, we discussed the possibility of observing more than nine SPDCs in this crystal. Our work not only deepens the understanding of the physics behind phase-matching conditions, but also offers the potential for a highly versatile entangled biphoton source for quantum information research.

Discrete frequency-bin entanglement generation via cascaded second-order nonlinear processes in Sagnac interferometer

Discrete frequency-bin entanglement is an essential resource for applications in quantum information processing. In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate a scheme to generate discrete frequency-bin entanglement with a single piece of periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide in a modified Sagnac interferometer. Correlated two-photon states in both directions of the Sagnac interferometer are generated through cascaded second-order optical nonlinear processes. A relative phase difference between the two states is introduced by changing the polarization state of pump light, thus manipulating the two-photon state at the output of the Sagnac interferometer. The generated two-photon state is sent into a fiber polarization splitter, then a pure discrete frequency-bin entangled two-photon state is obtained by setting the pump light. The frequency entanglement property is measured by a spatial quantum beating with a visibility of $96.0 \pm 6.1\%$. The density matrix is further obtained with a fidelity of $98.0 \pm 3.0\%$ to the ideal state. Our demonstration provides a promising method for the generation of pure discrete frequency-bin entanglement at telecom band, which is desired in quantum photonics.

Hertz-rate metropolitan quantum teleportation

Quantum teleportation can transfer an unknown quantum state between distant quantum nodes, which holds great promise in enabling large-scale quantum networks. To advance the full potential of quantum teleportation, quantum states must be faithfully transferred at a high rate over long distance. Despite recent impressive advances, a high-rate quantum teleportation system across metropolitan fiber networks is extremely desired. Here, we demonstrate a quantum teleportation system which transfers quantum states carried by independent photons at a rate of 7.1$\pm$0.4 Hz over 64-km-long fiber channel. An average single-photon fidelity of $\geqslant$ 90.6$\pm$2.6% is achieved, which exceeds the maximum fidelity of 2/3 in classical regime. Our result marks an important milestone towards quantum networks and opens the door to exploring quantum entanglement based informatic applications for the future quantum internet.

Spectrally multiplexed heralded single photon source at telecom-band

Heralded single photon source (HSPS) is an important way in generating genuine single photon, having advantages of experimental simplicity and versatility. However, HSPS intrinsically suffers from the trade-off between the heralded single photon rate and the single photon purity. To overcome this, one can apply multiplexing technology in different degrees of freedom to enhance the performance of HSPS. Here, by employing spectral multiplexing and active feed-forward spectral manipulating, we demonstrate a HSPS at 1.5 μm telecom-band. Our experimental results show that the spectral multiplexing effectively erases the frequency correlation of pair source and significantly improves the heralded single photon rate while keeping the g{^(^2^)}(0) as low as 0.0006{\pm}0.0001. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between the heralded single photons and photons from an independent weak coherent source indicates a high indistinguishability. Our results pave a way for scalable HSPS by spectral multiplexing towards deterministic single photon emission.

High-performance quantum entanglement generation via cascaded second-order nonlinear processes

In this paper, we demonstrate the generation of high-performance entangled photon-pairs in different degrees of freedom from a single piece of fiber pigtailed periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ (PPLN) waveguide. We utilize cascaded second-order nonlinear optical processes, i.e. second-harmonic generation (SHG) and spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), to generate photon-pairs. Previously, the performance of the photon pairs is contaminated by Raman noise photons from the fiber pigtails. Here by integrating the PPLN waveguide with noise rejecting filters, we obtain a coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) higher than 52,600 with photon-pair generation and detection rate of 52.3 kHz and 3.5 kHz, respectively. Energy-time, frequency-bin and time-bin entanglement is prepared by coherently superposing correlated two-photon states in these degrees of freedom, respectively. The energy-time entangled two-photon states achieve the maximum value of CHSH-Bell inequality of S=2.708$\pm$0.024 with a two-photon interference visibility of 95.74$\pm$0.86%. The frequency-bin entangled two-photon states achieve fidelity of 97.56$\pm$1.79% with a spatial quantum beating visibility of 96.85$\pm$2.46%. The time-bin entangled two-photon states achieve the maximum value of CHSH-Bell inequality of S=2.595$\pm$0.037 and quantum tomographic fidelity of 89.07$\pm$4.35%. Our results provide a potential candidate for quantum light source in quantum photonics.

A hybrid waveguide scheme for silicon-based quantum photonic circuits with quantum light sources

We propose a hybrid silicon waveguide scheme to avoid the impact of noise photons induced by pump lights in application scenarios of quantum photonic circuits with quantum light sources. The scheme is composed of strip waveguide and shallow-ridge waveguide structures. It utilizes the difference of biphoton spectra generated by spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in these two waveguides. By proper pumping setting and signal/idler wavelength selection, the generation of desired photon pairs is confined in the strip waveguide. The impact of noise photons generated by SFWM in the shallow-ridge waveguide could be avoided. Hence, the shallow-ridge waveguide could be used to realize various linear operation devices for pump light and quantum state manipulations. The feasibility of this scheme is verified by theoretical analysis and primary experiment. Two applications are proposed and analyzed, showing its great potential on silicon-based quantum photonic circuits.

Spatiotemporally Separable Biphoton State Generated by Spontaneous Four Wave Mixing in Ultrathin Nonlinear Films

We theoretically investigated the biphoton state generated by spontaneous four wave mixing (SpFWM) in ultrathin nonlinear films. The expression of the biphoton state is obtained by perturbation method, in which the longitudinal phase mismatch term is eliminated due to the ultra-small nonlinear interactive length. As a result of the relaxation of the longitudinal phase match condition, frequency bandwidth of the biphoton state could be very large. The correlation function of the biphoton state is analyzed, showing that the space and time in the biphoton correlation of this state are factorable. The calculations of the frequency purity further indicate that the temporal and spatial degrees of freedom in this biphoton state are separable. The spatial Schmidt numbers of the biphoton state are also calculated, showing that this state supports high dimensional transverse entanglement. These results shows that SpFWM in ultrathin nonlinear films is promising in generating biphoton states for applications involving hyper-entanglement and high-dimensional entanglement.

Generation of 1.5 μm discrete frequency entangled two-photon state in polarization maintaining fibers

In this Letter, the generation of 1.5 μm discrete frequency entangled two-photon state is realized based on a piece of commercial polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). It is connected with a polarization beam splitter to realize a modified Sagnac fiber loop (MSFL). Correlated two-photon states are generated through spontaneous four wave-mixing process along the two propagation directions of the MSFL, and output from the MSFL with orthogonal polarizations. The quantum interference of them is realized through a 45° polarization collimation between polarization axes of PMFs inside and outside the MSFL, while the phase difference of them is controlled by the polarization state of the pump light. The frequency entangled property of the two-photon state is demonstrated by a spatial quantum beating experiment with a fringe visibility of (98.2+/-1.3)%, without subtracting the accidental coincidence counts. The proposed scheme generates 1.5 μm discrete frequency entangled two-photon state in a polarization maintaining way, which is desired in practical quantum light sources.

Multicharged optical vortices induced in a dissipative atomic vapor system

We investigate numerically the dynamics of optical vortex beams carrying different topological charges, launched in a dissipative three level ladder type nonlinear atomic vapor. We impose the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) condition on the medium. Linear, cubic, and quintic susceptibilities, considered simultaneously with the dressing effect, are included in the analysis. Generally, the beams slowly expand during propagation and new vortices are induced, commonly appearing in oppositely charged pairs. We demonstrate that not only the form and the topological charge of the incident beam, but also its growing size in the medium greatly affect the formation and evolution of vortices. We formulate common rules for finding the number of induced vortices and the corresponding rotation directions, stemming from the initial conditions of various incident beams, as well as from the dynamical aspects of their propagation. The net topological charge of the vortex is conserved during propagation, as it should be, but the total number of charges is not necessarily same as the initial number, because of the complex nature of the system. When the EIT condition is lifted, an enhancement region of beam dynamics if reached, in which the dynamics and the expansion of the beam greatly accelerate. In the end, we discuss the liquid like behavior of light evolution in this dissipative system and propose a potential experimental scheme for observing such a behavior.

Controllable Multiwave Mixing Talbot Effect

We theoretically study the Talbot effects resulted from the four-wave mixing and six-wave mixing signals, which are periodically modulated due to the coherence control effect. Corresponding to different dressing states, the enhancement and suppression conditions that will affect the properties of the multiwave mixing signals are also discussed in detail. Such proposal can be useful in all-optical-controlled pattern formation and propagation of light.

Optical vortices induced in nonlinear multilevel atomic vapors

In a numerical investigation, we demonstrate the existence and curious evolution of vortices in a ladder-type three-level nonlinear atomic vapor with linear, cubic, and quintic susceptibilities considered simultaneously with the dressing effect. We find that the number of beads and topological charge of the incident beam, as well as its size, greatly affect the formation and evolution of vortices. To determine the number of induced vortices and the corresponding rotation direction, we give common rules associated with the initial conditions coming from various incident beams.

Generalized Criterion of Maximally Multi-Qubit Entanglement

We first present a generalized criterion for maximally entangled states of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and in theory to arbitrary-number qubits. By this criterion, some known highly entangled multi-qubit states are examined and a new genuine eight-qubit maximally entangle state is obtained. For the 4, 7 and 8 qubits system in which no maximally multi-qubit entangled states (MMES) is thought to exist before, we find that the proved and most suspected MMESes, are not completely mixed in subsystem with a critical-number qubits, below which the subsystems are all completely mixed. We believe that the new criterion and MMES can play important role in quantum information technology, such as the teleportation and dense coding.
