Unified resonant-manifold framework for dynamical quantum phase transitions

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are an exciting paradigm of out-of-equilibrium criticality in many-body systems manifested in nonanalytic behavior in the return rate to the initial state following a sudden quench. While previous work has tried to distinguish between distinct types of DQPTs, such as regular and anomalous, or manifold and branch, a comprehensive understanding of why each type appears in a given scenario is still lacking. In this work, we propose a unified framework addressing this gap in terms of the energy structure of different product state configurations. In particular, while manifold DQPTs are governed by resonances within the initial state manifold, branch DQPTs are governed by resonances with a transitional manifold of states dynamically connected to the initial manifold by low-order processes. We show that the (ir)regularity of branch DQPTs is related to the multiplicity of this transitional manifold, and we also observe exotic periods of extended degeneracy in the return rate (beyond the conventional level crossing of a DQPT) which are also conditioned on the structure of this transitional manifold. We demonstrate this by studying quenches of two different configurations in the 1 + 1D Z_2 LGT to various parameter regimes. Our findings provide a dynamical mechanism underlying branch DQPTs and frames DQPTs as probes of resonant connectivity in constrained Hilbert spaces, paving the way to a more complete understanding of the multifaceted nature of dynamical criticality.

Entanglement in quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with anomalous dynamical quantum phase transitions

Research on topological models unveils fascinating physics, especially in the realm of dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs). However, the understanding of entanglement structures and properties near DQPT in models with longer-range hoppings is far from complete. In this work, we study DQPTs in the quenched extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. Anomalous DQPTs, where the number of critical momenta exceeds the winding number differences between the pre-quench and post-quench phases, are observed. We find that the entanglement exhibits local maximum (minimum) around the anomalous DQPTs, in line with the level crossings (separations) around the middle of the correlation matrix spectrum. We further categorize the phases in the equilibrium model into two classes and distinctive features in the time evolution of the entanglement involving quenches within and across the two classes are identified. The findings pave the way to a better understanding of topological models with longer-range hoppings in the out-of-equilibrium regime.

Quantum spin fluctuations in dynamical quantum phase transitions

Quantum phase transitions have long been studied in their relation to quantum fluctuations. These fluctuations can be quantified as the degree of spin squeezing in spin models, where one of the two non-commutative observables breaks the standard quantum limit of measurement by minimizing its uncertainty. However, the understanding of their role in dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) is still incomplete. In this work, we combine the Loschmidt amplitude, which detects DQPTs, and the spin-squeezing parameter (SSP), the quantification of spin squeezing, to study the spin dynamics in a quenched interacting spin model around DQPT. We show that the extremal, mostly maximal, of SSP occurs near DQPTs when the system is quenched between different phases. These phenomena further unveil the spin correlations during DQPTs, for which the highest contribution aligns with the preferred direction of spin interactions in the post-quenched phase. We also demonstrate the time evolution of SSP differs for various quench scenarios. These findings provide us with physical insights into the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around DQPTs and their relation to the equilibrium phase diagrams.

Loschmidt amplitude spectrum in dynamical quantum phase transitions

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are criticalities in the time evolution of quantum systems and their existence has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, how the system behaves in the vicinity of DQPT and its connection to physical observables remains an open question. In this work, we introduce the concept of the Loschmidt amplitude spectrum (LAS), which extends the Loscmidt amplitude - the detector of the transition - by considering the overlap of the initial state to all the eigenstates of the prequench Hamiltonian. By analysing the LAS in the integrable transverse-field Ising model, we find that the system undergoes a population redistribution in the momentum space across DQPT. In the quasiparticle picture, all the lower-half k modes are excited when the system is at DQPT. The LAS is also applicable to study the dynamics of non-integrable models where we have investigated the Ising model with next-nearest-neighbour interactions as an example. The time evolution of the system's magnetization is found to be connected to the products of the LAS and there exists a simultaneous overlap of the time-evolved state to pairs of eigenstates of the prequnech Hamiltonian that possess spin configurations of negative magnetization. Our findings provide a better understanding of the characteristics of the out-of-equilibrium system around DQPT.
