Momentum Kick Model Description of the Ridge in (Delta-phi)-(Delta eta) Correlation in pp Collisions at 7 TeV

The near-side ridge structure in the (Delta phi)-(Delta eta) correlation observed by the CMS Collaboration for pp collisions at 7 TeV at LHC can be explained by the momentum kick model in which the ridge particles are medium partons that suffer a collision with the jet and acquire a momentum kick along the jet direction. Similar to the early medium parton momentum distribution obtained in previous analysis for nucleus-nucleus collisions at 0.2 TeV, the early medium parton momentum distribution in pp collisions at 7 TeV exhibits a rapidity plateau as arising from particle production in a flux tube.

Stability of Matter-Antimatter Molecules

We examine the stability of matter-antimatter molecules by reducing the four-body problem into a simpler two-body problem with residual interactions. We find that matter-antimatter molecules with constituents (m1+, m2-, m2bar+, m1bar-) possess bound states if their constituent mass ratio m1/m2 is greater than about 4. This stability condition suggests that the binding of matter-antimatter molecules is a rather common phenomenon. We evaluate the binding energies and eigenstates of matter-antimatter molecules (mu+ e-)-(e+ mu-), (pi+ e-)-(e+ pi-), (K+ e-)-(e+ K-), (p e-)-(e+ pbar), (p mu-)-(mu+ pbar), and (K+ mu-)-(mu+ K-), which satisfy the stability condition. We estimate the molecular annihilation lifetimes in their s states.

Klein-Gordon Equation in Hydrodynamical Form

We follow and modify the Feshbach-Villars formalism by separating the Klein-Gordon equation into two coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations for particle and antiparticle wave function components with positive probability densities. We find that the equation of motion for the probability densities is in the form of relativistic hydrodynamics where various forces have their classical counterparts, with the additional element of the quantum stress tensor that depends on the derivatives of the amplitude of the wave function. We derive the equation of motion for the Wigner function and we find that its approximate classical weak-field limit coincides with the equation of motion for the distribution function in the collisionless kinetic theory.

Foundation of Hydrodynamics for Systems with Strong Interactions

For a dense and strongly interacting system, such as a nucleus or a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, the foundation of hydrodynamics can be better found in the quantum description of constituents moving in the strong mean fields generated by all other particles. Using the result that the Schroedinger equation and the Klein-Gordon equation can be written in hydrodynamical forms, we find that the probability currents of the many-body system in the mean-field description obey a hydrodynamical equation with stress tensors arising from many contributions: quantum effects, mean-field interactions, and thermal fluctuations. The influence of various contributions to the hydrodynamical motion is expected to vary with the temperature, as the quantum and mean-field stress tensors playing more important roles at low and moderate temperatures.

Anomalous Soft Photons associated with Hadron Production in String Fragmentation

The bosonized QCD2+QED2 system for quarks with two flavors contains QCD2 and QED2 bound states, with an isoscalar photon at about 25 MeV and an isovector (I=1,I_3=0) photon at about 44 MeV. Consequently, when a quark and an antiquark at the two ends of a string pulls apart from each other at high energies, hadrons and soft photons will be produced simultaneously in the fragmentation of the string. The production of the QED2 soft photons in association with hadrons may explain the anomalous soft photon data in hadron-hadron collisions and e+e- annihilations at high energies.

Anomalous Soft Photons in Hadron Production

Anomalous soft photons in excess of what is expected from electromagnetic bremsstrahlung have been observed in association with the production of hadrons, mostly mesons, in high-energy (K+)p, (pi+)p, (pi-)p, pp, and (e+)(e-) collisions. We propose a model for the simultaneous production of anomalous soft photons and mesons in quantum field theory, in which the meson production arises from the oscillation of color charge densities of the quarks of the underlying vacuum in the flux tube. As a quark carries both a color charge and an electric charge, the oscillation of the color charge densities will be accompanied by the oscillation of electric charge densities, which will in turn lead to the simultaneous production of soft photons during the meson production process. How the production of these soft photons may explain the anomalous soft photon data will be discussed. Further experimental measurements to test the model will be proposed.

The Ridge Associated with the Near-side Jet in High Energy-Heavy-Ion Collisions

The ridge particles associated with a near-side jet are identified as medium partons kicked by the jet near the surface. They carry direct information on the parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-parton collisions and the magnitude of the longitudinal momentum kick. The extracted early parton momentum distribution has a rapidity plateau structure with a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution. Such a rapidity plateau structure may arise from particle production in flux tubes, as color charges and anti-color charges separate at high energies.

The Wigner Function of Produced Particles in String Fragmentation

We show that QCD4 with transverse confinement can be approximately compactified into QCD2 with a transverse quark mass $m_{{}_T}$ that is obtained by solving a set of coupled transverse eigenvalue equations. In the limits of a strong coupling and a large number of flavors, QCD2 further admits Schwinger QED2-type bosonized solutions. We therefore examine phenomenologically the space-time dynamics of produced particles in string fragmentation by studying the Wigner function of produced bosons in Schwinger QED2, which mimics many features of string fragmentation in quantum chromodynamics. We find that particles with momenta in different regions of the rapidity plateau are produced at the initial moment of string fragmentation as a quark pulls away from an antiquark at high energies, in contrast to classical pictures of string fragmentation with longitudinal space-momentum-time ordering.

Momentum Kick Model Analysis of PHENIX Near-Side Ridge Data and Photon Jet

We analyze PHENIX near-side ridge data for central Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV with the momentum kick model, in which a near-side jet emerges near the surface, kicks medium partons, loses energy, and fragments into the trigger particle and fragmentation products. The kicked medium partons subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles, which carry direct information on the early parton momentum distribution and the magnitude of the momentum kick. We find that the PHENIX ridge data can be described well by the momentum kick model and the extracted early partons momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse distribution and a rapidity plateau structure. We also find that the parton-parton scattering between the jet parton and the medium parton involves the exchange of a non-perturbative pomeron, for jet partons in momentum range considered in the near-side ridge measurements.

Singularity Structures in Coulomb-Type Potentials in Two Body Dirac Equations of Constraint Dynamics

Two Body Dirac Equations (TBDE) of Dirac's relativistic constraint dynamics have been successfully applied to obtain a covariant nonperturbative description of QED and QCD bound states. Coulomb-type potentials in these applications lead naively in other approaches to singular relativistic corrections at short distances that require the introduction of either perturbative treatments or smoothing parameters. We examine the corresponding singular structures in the effective potentials of the relativistic Schroedinger equation obtained from the Pauli reduction of the TBDE. We find that the relativistic Schroedinger equation lead in fact to well-behaved wave function solutions when the full potential and couplings of the system are taken into account. The most unusual case is the coupled triplet system with S=1 and L={(J-1),(J+1)}. Without the inclusion of the tensor coupling, the effective S-state potential would become attractively singular. We show how including the tensor coupling is essential in order that the wave functions be well-behaved at short distances. For example, the S-state wave function becomes simply proportional to the D-state wave function and dips sharply to zero at the origin, unlike the usual S-state wave functions. Furthermore, this behavior is similar in both QED and QCD, independent of the asymptotic freedom behavior of the assumed QCD vector potential. Light- and heavy-quark meson states can be described well by using a simplified linear-plus-Coulomb-type QCD potential apportioned appropriately between world scalar and vector potentials. We use this potential to exhibit explicitly the origin of the large pi-rho splitting and effective chiral symmetry breaking. The TBDE formalism developed here may be used to study quarkonia in quark-gluon plasma environments.

The Momentum Kick Model Description of the Near-Side Ridge and Jet Quenching

In the momentum kick model, a near-side jet emerges near the surface, kicks medium partons, loses energy, and fragments into the trigger particle and fragmentation products. The kicked medium partons subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles, which carry direct information on the magnitude of the momentum kick and the initial parton momentum distribution at the moment of jet-(medium parton) collisions. The initial parton momentum distribution extracted from the STAR ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV has a thermal-like transverse momentum distribution and a rapidity plateau structure with a relatively flat distribution at mid-rapidity and sharp kinematic boundaries at large rapidities. Such a rapidity plateau structure may arise from particle production in flux tubes, as color charges and anti-color charges separate at high energies. The centrality dependence of the ridge yield and the degree of jet quenching can be consistently described by the momentum kick model.

Toroidal Super-Heavy Nuclei in Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Approach

Within the self-consistent constraint Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS model (SHF+BCS), we found equilibrium toroidal nuclear density distributions in the region of super-heavy elements. For nuclei with a sufficient oblate deformation ($Q_{20}\leq$ -200 b), it becomes energetically favourable to change the genus of nuclear surface from 0 to 1, i.e., to switch the shape from a biconcave disc to a torus. The energy of the toroidal (genus=1) SHF+BCS solution relative to the compact (genus=0) ground state energy is strongly dependent both on the atomic number Z and the mass number A. We discuss the region of Z and A where the toroidal SHF+BCS total energy begins to be a global minimum.

Landau Hydrodynamics Reexamined

We review the formulation of Landau hydrodynamics and find that the rapidity distribution of produced particles in the center-of-mass system should be more appropriately modified as dN/dy \exp[\sqrt{y_b^2-y^2}], where y_b=\ln[\sqrt{s_{NN}}/m_p] is the beam nucleon rapidity, instead of Landau's original distribution, dN/dy(Landau) \exp[\sqrt{L^2-y^2}], where L=\ln[\sqrt{s_{NN}}/2m_p]. The modified distribution agrees better with experimental dN/dy data than the original Landau distribution and can be represented well by the Gaussian distribution, dN/dy(Gaussian) \exp[-y^2/2L]. Past successes of the Gaussian distribution in explaining experimental rapidity data can be understood, not because it is an approximation of the original Landau distribution, but because it is in fact a close representation of the modified distribution. Predictions for pp and AA collisions at LHC energies in Landau hydrodynamics are presented.

Lectures on Landau Hydrodynamics

Landau hydrodynamics is a plausible description for the evolution of the dense hot matter produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We review the formulation of Landau hydrodynamics to pave the way for its application in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It is found that Landau's rapidity distribution needs to be modified to provide a better quantitative description. In particular, the rapidity distribution in the center-of-mass system should be more appropriately given as dN/dy \exp{\sqrt{y_b^2-y^2}}, where y_b=\ln{\sqrt{s_NN}/m_p} is the beam nucleon rapidity, instead of Landau's original result of dN/dy({Landau}) \exp{\sqrt{L^2-y^2}} where L=\ln{\sqrt{s_NN}/2m_p}. The modified distribution is compared with the Landau distribution and experimental data. It is found that the modified distribution agrees better with experimental $dN/dy$ data than the Landau distribution and it differs only slightly from the Landau Gaussian distribution dN/dy(Landau-Gaussian) \exp{-y^2/2L}. Past successes of the Gaussian distribution in explaining experimental rapidity data arises, not because it is an approximation of the original Landau distribution, but because it is in fact a close representation of the modified distribution.

HBT interferometry with quantum transport of the interfering pair

In the late stage of the evolution of a pion system in high-energy heavy-ion collisions when pions undergo multiple scatterings, the quantum transport of the interfering pair of identical pions plays an important role in determining the characteristics of the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interference. We study the quantum transport of the interfering pair using the path-integral method, in which the evolution of the bulk matter is described by relativistic hydrodynamics while the paths of the two interfering pions by test particles following the fluid positions and velocity fields. We investigate in addition the effects of secondary pion sources from particle decays, for nuclear collisions at AGS and RHIC energies. We find that quantum transport of the interfering pair leads to HBT radii close to those for the chemical freeze-out configuration. Particle decays however lead to HBT radii greater than those for the chemical freeze-out configuration. As a consequence, the combined effects give rise to HBT radii between those extracted from the chemical freeze-out configuration and the thermal freeze-out configuration. Proper quantum treatments of the interfering pairs in HBT calculations at the pion multiple scattering stage are important for our understanding of the characteristics of HBT interferometry in heavy-ion collisions.

The thermal width of heavy quarkonia moving in quark gluon plasma

The velocity dependence of the thermal width of heavy quarkonia traveling with respect to the quark gluon plasma is calculated up to the NLO in perturbative QCD. At the LO, the width decreases with increasing speed, whereas at the NLO it increases with a magnitude approximately proportional to the expectation value of the relative velocity between the quarkonium and a parton in thermal equilibrium. Such an asymptotic behavior is due to the NLO dissociation cross section converging to a nonvanishing value in the high energy limit.
