Absence of curvature singularities in symmetric perfect fluid spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

In this paper we study the higher dimensional homogeneous and isotropic perfect fluid spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. We solve the modified field equations with higher order curvature terms to determine the evolution of the scale factor. We transparently show that this scale factor cannot become smaller than a finite minimum positive value which depends on the dimension and equation of state. This bound completely eliminates any curvature singularities in the spacetimes, where the scale factor must tend to zero. This is a unique property of EGB gravity which, despite being ghost-free and having quasi-linear field equations like general relativity, allows for the violation of singularity theorems. This phenomenon, thus, gives a natural way to dynamically construct regular black holes via higher dimensional continual gravitational collapse.

The Buchdahl Bound Denotes The Geometrical Virial Theorem

In this paper, we geometrically establish yet another correspondence between Newtonian mechanics and general relativity by connecting the Buchdahl bound and the Virial theorem. Buchdahl stars are defined by the saturation of the Buchdahl bound, $Φ(R) \leq 4/9$ where $Φ(R)$ is the gravitational potential felt by a radially falling particle. An interesting alternative characterization is given by gravitational energy being half of non-gravitational energy. With insightful identification of the former with kinetic and the latter with potential energy, it has been recently argued that the equilibrium of a Buchdahl star may be governed by the Virial theorem. In this paper, we provide a purely geometric version of this theorem and thereby of the Buchdahl star characterization. We show that the condition for an accreting Buchdahl star to remain in the state of Virial equilibrium is that it must expel energy via heat flux, appearing in the exterior as Vaidya radiation. If that happens then a Buchdahl star continues in the Virial equilibrium state without ever turning into a black hole.

Generating exact polytropes in non-conservative unimodular geometries

The trace-free Einstein equations contain one equation less than the complete field equations. In a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, the number of field equations is thus reduced to two. The equation of pressure isotropy of general relativity, however, is preserved thus showing that any known perfect fluid spacetime is a suitable candidate for the trace-free scenario. The extra freedom in imposing two constraints may now be exploited to include polytopes, something that is difficult in general relativity. The point here is that using any known exact solution one can find a polytropic star for various values of the polytropic index. One arrives at Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff type equations and can study their solutions explicitly. Two examples of well-known stellar distributions that generate polytropes with physically reasonable behaviour are discussed. These models are regular, exhibit a sound speed that is never superluminal and are adiabatically stable in the sense of Chandrasekhar. We investigate a compactness measure confirming that our results are consistent with some observational data.

What makes a shear-free spherical perfect fluid be inhomogeneous with tidal effects?

This is an important and natural question as the spacetime shear, inhomogeneity and tidal effects are all intertwined via the Einstein field equations. However, as we show in this paper, such scenarios are possible for limited classes of equations of state that are solutions to a highly non-linear and fourth order differential equation. To show this, we use a covariant semitetrad spacetime decomposition and present a novel geometrical classification of shear-free Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS-II) perfect fluid self-gravitating systems, in terms of the covariantly defined fluid acceleration and the fluid expansion. Noteworthily, we deduce the governing differential equation that gives the possible limited equations of state of matter.

A semi-tetrad decomposition of the Kerr spacetime

In this paper we perform a semi-tetrad decomposition of the Kerr spacetime. We apply the 1+1+2 covariant method to the Kerr spacetime in order to describe its geometry outside the ergoregion. As a result we are able to explicitly write down the 1+1+2 Kerr quantities, and the evolution and propagation equations they satisfy. This formalism allows us to present the kinematic and dynamic quantities in a transparent geometrical manner; and also to highlight the role of vorticity. To our knowledge, using the 1+1+2 formalism to investigate the Kerr spacetime is a novel approach and this provides new insights into the spacetime geometry in an easier manner than alternate approaches. Furthermore we make corrections to earlier equations in the 1+1+2 formalism applied to the Kerr spacetime.
