Real analytic solutions to the divergence equation

In this paper, we develop a differential-topological method to yield explicit real analytic solutions $v$ to the divergence equation $div_{\mathbb{R}^n} v = f$ on any annali $A(R_1 ,R_2) = \{ x \in \mathbb{R}^n : R_1 < |x| < R_2\}$, with $n \geq 2$, and $0 < R_1 < R_2 < \infty$. The prescribed source term $f$ is supposed to be real analytic on $\overline{A(R_1 , R_2)} = \{ x \in \mathbb{R}^n : R_1 \leq |x| \leq R_2\}$ satisfying the zero integral condition on $A(R_1, R_2)$. The resulting solution $v$ is a real analytic vector field on $\overline{A(R_1 , R_2)}$, which vanishes on $\partial \big( A(R_1, R_2 ) \big )$. The method which we develop here is different from the standard Bogovski approach and the Kapitanskii-Pileckas approach. The first main step our method is a clever differential-topological argument, which we develop under the inspiration and guidance of the standard proof of the cohomological statement $H_c^n \big ( \mathbb{R}^n\big ) = \mathbb{R}$ in Spviak book A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry, Vol I. This allows us to reduce the problem to that of solving a linear algebra problem.

Thin shell limit and the derivation of the viscosity operator on the ellipsoid

In this paper we derive four new candidates for an intrinsic viscosity operator on an ellipsoid by using the heuristic of the thin shell limit along the scaling direction of the ellipsoid. We show that the general method of the thin shell limit through the asymptotic expansion depends on the averaging method used. We consider both the homogeneous Navier and Hodge boundary conditions. We also obtain a geometric representation of these two boundary conditions.

The Gauss formulas for Laplacians on submanifolds

There are several types of Laplacians of a vector field on a Riemannian manifold. These include the Bochner and the Hodge Laplacian. The Gauss formula for the Levi-Civita connection relates the extrinsic connection to the intrinsic connection. We extend the Gauss formula for the connection to formulas for the different types of Laplacians of a vector field on a submanifold of any codimension $k\geq 1$. In the process, we derive a Gauss formula for the Ricci operator, formulas for the divergence of the second fundamental form, and a formula for the Laplacian of a $1$-form on a surface of revolution in terms of the Lie derivatives. The formulas have applications to the study of the formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a Riemannian manifold.

NeuroSEM: A hybrid framework for simulating multiphysics problems by coupling PINNs and spectral elements

Multiphysics problems that are characterized by complex interactions among fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural mechanics, and electromagnetics, are inherently challenging due to their coupled nature. While experimental data on certain state variables may be available, integrating these data with numerical solvers remains a significant challenge. Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have shown promising results in various engineering disciplines, particularly in handling noisy data and solving inverse problems in partial differential equations (PDEs). However, their effectiveness in forecasting nonlinear phenomena in multiphysics regimes, particularly involving turbulence, is yet to be fully established. This study introduces NeuroSEM, a hybrid framework integrating PINNs with the high-fidelity Spectral Element Method (SEM) solver, Nektar++. NeuroSEM leverages the strengths of both PINNs and SEM, providing robust solutions for multiphysics problems. PINNs are trained to assimilate data and model physical phenomena in specific subdomains, which are then integrated into the Nektar++ solver. We demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of NeuroSEM for thermal convection in cavity flow and flow past a cylinder. We applied NeuroSEM to the Rayleigh-Bénard convection system, including cases with missing thermal boundary conditions and noisy datasets, and to real particle image velocimetry (PIV) data to capture flow patterns characterized by horseshoe vortical structures. The framework's plug-and-play nature facilitates its extension to other multiphysics or multiscale problems. Furthermore, NeuroSEM is optimized for efficient execution on emerging integrated GPU-CPU architectures. This hybrid approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of simulations, making it a powerful tool for tackling complex engineering challenges in various scientific domains.

The formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations on Riemannian manifolds

We consider the generalization of the Navier-Stokes equations from $\mathbb R^n$ to the Riemannian manifolds. There are inequivalent formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds due to the different possibilities for the Laplacian operator acting on vector fields on a Riemannian manifold. We present several distinct arguments that indicate that the form of the equations proposed by Ebin and Marsden in 1970 should be adopted as the correct generalization of the Navier-Stokes to the Riemannian manifolds.

The restriction problem on the ellipsoid

Following a restriction argument in the Euclidean space, we derive a geometric invariant formula for a possible viscosity operator for an incompressible fluid flow on an ellipsoid embedded in $\mathbb R^3$. We also give an asymptotic expansion of the formula in terms of the eccentricity associated with the ellipsoid.

Hodge decomposition of the Sobolev space $H^1$ on a space form of nonpositive curvature

The Hodge decomposition is well-known for compact manifolds. The result has been extended by Kodaira to include non-compact manifolds and $L^2$ forms. We further extend the Hodge decomposition to the Sobolev space $H^1$ for general $k$-forms on non-compact manifolds of nonpositive constant sectional curvature. As a result, we also obtain a decomposition on $\mathbb R^N$.

Antithesis of the Stokes paradox on the hyperbolic plane

We show there exists a nontrivial $H^1_0$ solution to the steady Stokes equation on the 2D exterior domain in the hyperbolic plane. Hence we show there is no Stokes paradox in the hyperbolic setting. We also show the existence of a nontrivial solution to the steady Navier-Stokes equation in the same setting, whereas the analogous problem is open in the Euclidean case.

Asymptotic behavior of the steady Navier-Stokes equation on the hyperbolic plane

We develop the asymptotic behavior for the solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation in the exterior domain of the 2D hyperbolic space. More precisely, given the finite Dirichlet norm of the velocity, we show the velocity decays to $0$ at infinity. We also address the decay rate for the vorticity and the behavior of the pressure.

An ODE for boundary layer separation on a sphere and a hyperbolic space

Ma and Wang derived an equation linking the separation location and times for the boundary layer separation of incompressible fluid flows. The equation gave a necessary condition for the separation (bifurcation) point. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the equation to other geometries, and to phrase it as a simple ODE. Moreover we consider the Navier-Stokes equation with the Coriolis effect, which is related to the presence of trade winds on Earth.

On the stationary Navier-Stokes flow with isotropic streamlines in all latitudes on a sphere or a 2D hyperbolic space

In this paper, we show the existence of real-analytic stationary Navier-Stokes flows with isotropic streamlines in all latitudes in some simply-connected flow region on a rotating round sphere. We also exclude the possibility of having a Poiseuille's flow profile to be one of these stationary Navier-Stokes flows with isotropic streamlines. When the sphere is replaced by a 2-dimensional hyperbolic space, we also give the analog existence result for stationary parallel laminar Navier-Stokes flows along a circular-arc boundary portion of some compact obstacle in the 2-D hyperbolic space. The existence of stationary parallel laminar Navier-Stokes flows along a straight boundary of some obstacle in the 2-D hyperbolic space is also studied. In any one of these cases, we show that a parallel laminar flow with a Poiseuille's flow profile ceases to be a stationary Navier-Stokes flow, due to the curvature of the background manifold.

On possible isolated blow-up phenomena of the 3D-Navier-Stokes equation and a regularity criterion in terms of supercritical function space condition and smoothness condition along the streamlines

The first goal of our paper is to give a new type of regularity criterion for solutions $u$ to Navier-Stokes equation in terms of some supercritical function space condition $u \in L^{\infty}(L^{α,*})$ (with $\frac{3}{4}(17^{\frac{1}{2}} -1)< α< 3 $) and some exponential control on the growth rate of $\dv (\frac{u}{|u|})$ along the streamlines of u. This regularity criterion greatly improves the previous one in \cite{smoothnesscriteria}. The proof leading to the regularity criterion of our paper basically follows the one in \cite{smoothnesscriteria}. However, we also point out that totally new idea which involves the use of the new supercritical function space condition is necessary for the success of our new regularity criterion in this paper. The second goal of our paper is to construct a divergence free vector field $u$ within a flow-invariant tubular region with increasing twisting of streamlines towards one end of a bundle of streamlines. The increasing twisting of streamlines is controlled in such a way that the associated quantities $\|u\|_{L^α}$ and $\|\dv(\frac{u}{|u|})\|_{L^{6}}$ blow up while preserving the finite energy property $u\in L^{2}$ at the same time. The purpose of such a construction is to demonstrate the necessity to go beyond the scope covered by some previous regularity criteria such as \cite{Vasseur2} or \cite{Esca}.

Non-uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf solutions in the hyperbolic setting

We consider the Navier-Stokes equation on $\mathbb{H}^{2}(-a^{2})$, the two dimensional hyperbolic space with constant sectional curvature $-a^{2}$. We prove an ill-posedness result in the sense that the uniqueness of the Leray-Hopf weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation breaks down on $\mathbb{H}^{2}(-a^{2})$. We also obtain a corresponding result on a more general negatively curved manifold for a modified geometric version of the Navier-Stokes equation. Finally, as a corollary we also show a lack of the Liouville theorem in the hyperbolic setting both in two and three dimensions.
