PathScale-R1: Cross-scale Reasoning for Pathological Image Analysis

Pathological diagnosis is inherently multi-scale, requiring the integration of global tissue architecture at low magnification with cellular morphology at higher magnification. However, existing pathology benchmarks and vision-language models (VLMs) are still largely developed under single-scale settings, limiting their ability to learn clinically meaningful multi-magnification reasoning. Moreover, naively constructed visual question answering (VQA) tasks may be susceptible to text-only or superficial visual shortcuts, leading to unreliable assessments of visual understanding. To address these limitations, we introduce a benchmark and training framework for shortcut-resistant cross-scale pathology reasoning. We design an Adversarial Text-only Screening strategy for semantic reasoning questions and a Structure-controlled Distractor Sampling strategy for visual grounding questions, encouraging models to rely on cross-scale visual evidence. Based on this pipeline, we construct PathScale-VQA, a high-quality cross-scale pathology VQA benchmark with 10,373 multiple-choice questions grounded in 1,368 diagnostic paths across multiple magnification levels. Building on the semantic reasoning set, PathScale-R1 is optimized through Difficulty-driven Reasoning Distillation supervised fine-tuning followed by reinforcement learning with a Scale-aware Reasoning Structure reward, which encourages the use of evidence across magnifications. Extensive experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art performance of PathScale-R1 on cross-scale reasoning tasks and effective transfer to conventional single-scale pathology VQA. Enhancing Pathological VLMs with Cross-scale Reasoning

Pathological images are inherently multi-scale, requiring pathologists to integrate evidence from global tissue architecture at low magnification to cellular morphology at higher magnification for accurate diagnosis. While existing pathological datasets for vision-language models (VLMs) include various scales, they often lack explicit cross-scale reasoning objectives. This limitation prevents VLMs from capturing essential cross-scale representations and learning evidence-based reasoning. To bridge this gap, we introduce the first cross-scale training and evaluation paradigm that formulates pathology interpretation as multi-magnification reasoning. However, creating such a task reveals a critical challenge: multi-image visual question answering (VQA) is prone to text-only shortcuts, which allow models to guess answers using magnification-dependent artifacts rather than visual evidence. To address this, we propose a leakage-aware curation pipeline that combines adversarial text-only screening with constraint-guided question design. Using this pipeline, we construct Scale-VQA, a high-quality benchmark with 4,685 multiple-choice questions grounded in 2,537 pathology images across multiple magnification levels. Finally, we present ScaleReasoner-R1, a model trained via reinforcement learning to optimize performance on cross-scale VQA tasks. ScaleReasoner-R1 achieves state-of-the-art performance on our cross-scale reasoning benchmark and generalizes to SOTA performance on established single-scale benchmarks. Findings suggest that even the limited cross-scale supervision can significantly improve pathological understanding. Code is available at https://github.com/iMVR-PL/ScaleReasoner-R1.

TransReg: Cross-transformer as auto-registration module for multi-view mammogram mass detection

Screening mammography is the most widely used method for early breast cancer detection, significantly reducing mortality rates. The integration of information from multi-view mammograms enhances radiologists' confidence and diminishes false-positive rates since they can examine on dual-view of the same breast to cross-reference the existence and location of the lesion. Inspired by this, we present TransReg, a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system designed to exploit the relationship between craniocaudal (CC), and mediolateral oblique (MLO) views. The system includes cross-transformer to model the relationship between the region of interest (RoIs) extracted by siamese Faster RCNN network for mass detection problems. Our work is the first time cross-transformer has been integrated into an object detection framework to model the relation between ipsilateral views. Our experimental evaluation on DDSM and VinDr-Mammo datasets shows that our TransReg, equipped with SwinT as a feature extractor achieves state-of-the-art performance. Specifically, at the false positive rate per image at 0.5, TransReg using SwinT gets a recall at 83.3% for DDSM dataset and 79.7% for VinDr-Mammo dataset. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis to demonstrate that cross-transformer can function as an auto-registration module, aligning the masses in dual-view and utilizing this information to inform final predictions. It is a replication diagnostic workflow of expert radiologists

A Novel Transparency Strategy-based Data Augmentation Approach for BI-RADS Classification of Mammograms

Image augmentation techniques have been widely investigated to improve the performance of deep learning (DL) algorithms on mammography classification tasks. Recent methods have proved the efficiency of image augmentation on data deficiency or data imbalance issues. In this paper, we propose a novel transparency strategy to boost the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) scores of mammogram classifiers. The proposed approach utilizes the Region of Interest (ROI) information to generate more high-risk training examples for breast cancer (BI-RADS 3, 4, 5) from original images. Our extensive experiments on three different datasets show that the proposed approach significantly improves the mammogram classification performance and surpasses a state-of-the-art data augmentation technique called CutMix. This study also highlights that our transparency method is more effective than other augmentation strategies for BI-RADS classification and can be widely applied to other computer vision tasks.

Exponential Synchronization of 2D Cellular Neural Networks with Boundary Feedback

In this work we propose a new model of 2D cellular neural networks (CNN) in terms of the lattice FitzHugh-Nagumo equations with boundary feedback and prove a threshold condition for the exponential synchronization of the entire neural network through the \emph{a priori} uniform estimates of solutions and the analysis of dissipative dynamics. The threshold to be satisfied by the gap signals between pairwise boundary cells of the network is expressed by the structural parameters and adjustable. The new result and method of this paper can also be generalized to 3D and higher dimensional FitzHugh-Nagumo type or Hindmarsh-Rose type cellular neural networks.

Dynamics and Synchronization of Complex Neural Networks with Boundary Coupling

A new mathematical model for complex neural networks of the partly diffusive Hindmasrh-Rose equations with boundary coupling is proposed. Through analysis of absorbing dynamics for the solution semiflow, the asymptotic synchronization of the complex neuronal networks at a uniform exponential rate is proved under the condition that stimulation signal strength of the ensemble boundary coupling exceeds a quantitative threshold expressed by the biological parameters.

Synchronization of Boundary Coupled Hindmarsh-Rose Neuron Network

In this work, we present a new mathematical model of a boundary coupled neuron network described by the partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations. We prove the global absorbing property of the solution semiflow and then the main result on the asymptotic synchronization of this neuron network at a uniform exponential rate provided that the boundary coupling strength and the stimulating signal exceed a quantified threshold in terms of the parameters.

A New Model of Coupled Hindmarsh-Rose Neurons

A new model of two coupled neurons is presented by the partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations. The solution semiflow exhibits globally absorbing characteristics. As the main result, the self-synchronization of the coupled neurons at a uniform rate is proved, which can be extended to complex neuronal networks.

Random Attractor for Stochastic Hindmarsh-Rose Equations with Additive Noise

For stochastic Hindmarsh-Rose equations with additive noises in the study of neurodynamics, the longtime and global pullback dynamics on a two-dimensional bounded domain is explored in this work. Using the additive transformation and by the sharp uniform estimates, we proved the pullback absorbing and the pullback asymptotically compact characteristics of the Hindmarsh-Rose random dynamical system in the $L^2$ Hilbert space. It shows the existence of a random attractor for this random dynamical system.

Global Dynamics of Nonautonomous Hindmarsh-Rose Equations

Global dynamics of nonautonomous diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations on a three-dimensional bounded domain in neurodynamics is investigated. The existence of a pullback attractor is proved through uniform estimates showing the pullback dissipative property and the pullback asymptotical compactness. Then the existence of pullback exponential attractor is also established by proving the smoothing Lipschitz continuity in a long run of the solution process.

Exponential Attractor for Hindmarsh-Rose Equations in Neurodynamics

The existence of an exponential attractor for the diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations on a three-dimensional bounded domain originated in the study of neurodynamics is proved through uniform estimates together with a new theorem on the squeezing property of an abstract reaction-diffusion equation also proved in this paper. The results infer that the global attractor whose existence has been established in [23] for the Hindmarsh-Rose semiflow has a finite fractal dimension.

The longtime and global pullback dynamics of stochastic Hindmarsh-Rose equations with multiplicative noise on a three-dimensional bounded domain in neurodynamics is investigated in this work. The existence of a random attractor for this random dynamical system is proved through the exponential transformation and uniform estimates showing the pullback absorbing property and the pullback asymptotically compactness of this cocycle in the $L^2$ Hilbert space.

Global Attractors for Hindmarsh-Rose Equations in Neurodynamics

Global dynamics of the diffusive and partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations on a three-dimensional bounded domain originated in neurodynamics are investigated in this paper. The existence of global attractors as well as the regularity are proved through various uniform estimates showing the dissipative properties and the asymptotically compact characteristics, especially for the partly diffusive Hindmarsh-Rose equations by means of the Kolmogorov-Riesz theorem.
