Charged particle motion in a time-dependent flux-driven ring: an exactly solvable model

We consider a charged particle driven by a time-dependent flux threading a quantum ring. The dynamics of the charged particle is investigated using classical treatment, Fourier expansion technique, time-evolution method, and Lewis-Riesenfeld approach. We have shown that, by properly managing the boundary conditions, a time-dependent wave function can be obtained using a general non-Hermitian time-dependent invariant, which is a specific linear combination of initial angular-momentum and azimuthal-angle operators. It is shown that the linear invariant eigenfunction can be realized as a Gaussian-type wave packet with a peak moving along the classical angular trajectory, while the distribution of the wave packet is determined by the ratio of the coefficient of the initial angle to that of the initial canonical angular momentum. From the topologically nontrivial nature as well as the classical trajectory and angular momentum, one can determine the dynamical motion of the wave packet. It should be noted that the peak position is no longer an expectation value of the angle operator, and hence the Ehrenfest theorem is not directly applicable in such a topologically nontrivial system.

Spectral properties and magneto-optical excitations in semiconductor double-rings under Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We have numerically solved the Hamiltonian of an electron in a semiconductor double ring subjected to the magnetic flux and Rashba spin-orbit interaction. It is found that the Aharonov-Bohm energy spectrum reveals multi-zigzag periodic structures. The investigations of spin-dependent electron dynamics via Rabi oscillations in two-level and three-level systems demonstrate the possibility of manipulating quantum states. Our results show that the optimal control of photon-assisted inter-ring transitions can be achieved by employing cascade-type and $Λ$-type transition mechanisms. Under chirped pulse impulsions, a robust and complete transfer of an electron to the final state is shown to coincide with the estimation of the Landau-Zener formula.

Generation of dc spin current in a narrow channel with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction

We consider a finite range ac-biased front gate acting upon a quantum channel with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction effects. The ac-biased gate, giving rise to a dynamical Rashba coupling, causes spin-resolved coherent resonant inelastic scattering. A pure dc spin current is subsequently generated without accompanying charge current. In the presence of Dresselhaus effect, the dc spin current is suppressed in the low kinetic energy regime but is assisted in the high kinetic energy regime.

Magnetotransport in a double quantum wire: Modeling using a scattering formalism built on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation

We model electronic transport through a double quantum wire in an external homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field using a scattering formalism built on the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. In the scattering region a window is opened between the parallel wires allowing for inter- and intra-wire scattering processes. Due to the parity breaking of the magnetic field the ensuing subband energy spectrum of the double wire system with its regimes of hole- and electron-like propagating modes leads to a more structure rich conductance as a function of the energy of the incoming waves than is seen in a single parabolically confined quantum wire. The more complex structure of the evanescent modes of the system also leaves its marks on the conductance.

Coherent magnetotransport spectroscopy in an edge-blocked double quantum wire with window and resonator coupling

We propose an electronic double quantum wire system that contains a pair of edge blocking potential and a coupling element in the middle barrier between two ballistic quantum wires. A window and a resonator coupling control between the parallel wires are discussed and compared for the enhancement of the interwire transfer processes in an appropriate magnetic field. We illustrate the results of the analysis by performing computational simulations on the conductance and probability density of electron waves in the window and resonator coupled double wire system.

Connecting wave functions at a three-leg junction of one-dimensional channels

We propose a scheme to connect the wave functions on different one-dimensional branches of a three-leg junction (Y-junction). Our scheme differs from that due to Griffith [Trans. Faraday Soc. 49, 345 (1953)] in the respect that ours can model the difference in the widths of the quasi-one-dimensional channels in different systems. We test our scheme by comparing results from a doubly-connected one-dimensional system and a related quasi-one-dimensional system, and we find a good agreement. Therefore our scheme may be useful in the construction of one-dimensional effective theories out of (multiply-connected) quasi-one-dimensional systems.

Exact approaches to charged particle motion in a time-dependent flux-driven ring

We consider a charged particle which is driven by a time-dependent flux threading a circular ring system. Various approaches including classical treatment, Fourier expansion method, time-evolution method, and Lewis-Riesenfeld method are used and compared to solve the time-dependent problem. By properly managing the boundary condition of the system, a time-dependent wave function of the charged particle can be obtained by using a non-Hermitian time-dependent invariant, which is a specific linear combination of initial angular-momentum and azimuthal-angle operators. The eigenfunction of the linear invariant can be realized as a Gaussian-type wave packet with a peak moving along the classical angular trajectory, while the distribution of the wave packet is determined by the ratio of the coefficient of the initial angle to that of the initial canonical angular momentum. In this topologically nontrivial system, we find that although the classical trajectory and angular momentum can determine the motion of the wave packet; however, the peak position is no longer an expectation value of the angle operator. Therefore, in such a system, the Ehrenfest theorem is not directly applicable.

Tuning of coupling modes in laterally parallel double open quantum dots

We consider electronic transport through laterally parallel double open quantum dots embedded in a quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field. The coupling modes of the dots are tunable by adjusting the strength of a central barrier and the applied magnetic field. Probability density and electron current density are calculated to demonstrate transport effects including magnetic blocking, magnetic turbulence, and a hole-like quasibound state feature. Fano to dip line-shape crossover in the conductance is found by varying the magnetic field.

A state with negative binding energy induced by coherent transport in a quantum wire

In a two-dimensional quantum wire in a perpendicular magnetic field with a smooth embedded repulsive scattering potential we find in the multimode conductance resonances caused by bound states with negative binding energy. These resonances are the counterexamples to well known dips in the conductance and evanescent states caused by quasi-bound states of attractive scattering centers in the wire.

Transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in magnetic field

We investigate the transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. To be able to treat scattering potentials of finite extent in magnetic field we use a mixed momentum-coordinate representation to obtain an integral equation for the multiband scattering matrix. For a large embedded quantum ring we are able to obtain Aharanov-Bohm type of oscillations with superimposed narrow resonances caused by interaction with quasi-bound states in the ring. We also employ scattering matrix approach to calculate the conductance through a semi-extended barrier or well in the wire. The numerical implementations we resort to in order to describe the cases of weak and intermediate magnetic field allow us to produce high resolution maps of the ``near field'' scattering wave functions, which are used to shed light on the underlying scattering processes.

Multi-mode transport through a quantum nanowire with two embedded dots

We investigate the conductance of a quantum wire with two embedded quantum dots using a T-matrix approach based on the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism. The quantum dots are represented by a quantum well with Gaussian shape and the wire is two-dimensional with parabolic confinement in the transverse direction. In a broad wire the transport can assume a strong nonadiabatic character and the conductance manifests effects caused by intertwined inter- and intra-dot processes that are identified by analysis of the ``nearfield'' probability distribution of the transported electrons.

Lewis-Riesenfeld approach to the solutions of Schrodinger equation in the presence of the presence of a time-dependent linear potential

We reexamine the general solution of a Schrödinger equation in the presence of a time-dependent linear potential in configuration space based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld framework. For comparison, we also solve the problem in momentum space and then Fourier transform the solution to get the general wave function. Appropriately choosing the weight function in the latter method, we can obtain the same wave function as the former method. It is found that non-Hermitian time-dependent linear invariant can be used to obtain Gaussian-type wave-packet (GTWP) solutions of the time-dependent system. This operator is a specific linear combination of the initial momentum and initial position operators. This fact indicates that the constants of integration such as the initial position and initial momentum that determine the classical motion play important roles in the time-dependent quantum system. The eigenfunction of the linear invariant is interpreted as a wave packet with a "center of mass" moving along the classical trajectory, while the ratio between the coefficients of the initial position and initial momentum determines the width of the wave packet.

Analysis on the imaging properties of a left-handed material slab

We investigate in this paper the imaging properties of an absorptive left-handed material (LHM) slab. For a line source, a geometric explanation to the reason of the thickness limitation on an ideal slab is given. For a lossy slab, the imaging properties are determined by the wavelength, the slab thickness, the distance from the source to the nearer boundary of the slab, and the absorption effect. Varying the ratios between these quantities, the image width can be changed from wavelength to subwavelength scale. In the former situation, the energy density is mainly concentrated at the two image spots. In the later case, though image of subwavelength width appears on the focal plane, however, most energy is located at about the two boundaries of the slab, and beyond the boundaries the wave amplitude decays exponentially. The relations between the subwavelength imaging and uncertainty principle is also discussed.

Coherent electronic transport in a multimode quantum channel with Gaussian-type scatterers

Coherent electron transport through a quantum channel in the presence of a general extended scattering potential is investigated using a T-matrix Lippmann-Schwinger approach. The formalism is applied to a quantum wire with Gaussian type scattering potentials, which can be used to model a single impurity, a quantum dot or more complicated structures in the wire. The well known dips in the conductance in the presence of attractive impurities is reproduced. A resonant transmission peak in the conductance is seen as the energy of the incident electron coincides with an energy level in the quantum dot. The conductance through a quantum wire in the presence of an asymmetric potential are also shown. In the case of a narrow potential parallel to the wire we find that two dips appear in the same subband which we ascribe to two quasi bound states originating from the next evanescent mode.

Impurity and spin effects on the magneto-spectroscopy of a THz-modulated nanostructure

We present a grid-free DFT model appropriate to explore the time evolution of electronic states in a semiconductor nanostructure. The model can be used to investigate both the linear and the nonlinear response of the system to an external short-time perturbation in the THz regime. We use the model to study the effects of impurities on the magneto-spectroscopy of a two-dimensional electron gas in a nanostructure excited by an intense THz radiation. We do observe a reduction in the binding energy of the impurity with increasing excitation strength, and at a finite magnetic field we find a slow onset of collective spin-oscillations that can be made to vanish with a stronger excitation.

Non-adiabatic current generation in a finite width semiconductor ring

We consider a model of a semiconductor quantum ring of finite width in a constant perpendicular magnetic field. We show how a current of the same order as the persistent current can be generated non-adiabatically by a short intensive pulse in the Tera-Hertz regime.
