Doorway states and the Bose-Hubbard model

We introduce an efficient method to solve the Mott-Hubbard model. The Schrödinger equation is solved by the successive construction of doorway states. The ground state wavefunction derived by this method contains all relevant many-body correlations introduced by the hamiltonian, but the dimensionality of the Hilbert space is greatly reduced. We apply the doorway method to obtain the chemical potential, the on-site fluctuations and the visibility of the interference pattern arising from atoms in a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Excellent agreement with exact numerical calculations as well as recent experimental observations is found.

Signature of the black hole phase transition in quasinormal modes

We study the perturbation of the scalar field interacting with the Maxwell field in the background of d-dimensional charged AdS black hole and AdS soliton. Different from the single classical field perturbation, which always has the decay mode in the black hole background, we observe the possible growing mode when the perturbation of the scalar field strongly couples to the Maxwell field. Our results disclose the signature of how the phase transition happens when the interaction among classical fields is strong. The sudden change of the perturbation to growing mode is also observed in the AdS soliton with electric potential. However in the magnetic charged AdS soliton background, we observe the consistent perturbation behavior when the interaction between scalar field and Maxwell field is considered. This implies that for the magnetic charged AdS soliton configuration, unlike the situation with electric potential, there is no scalar field condensation which causes the phase change.

The Non-universal behaviour of Cold Fermi Condensates with Narrow Feshbach Resonances

In this paper we construct an effective field theory for a condensate of cold Fermi atoms whose scattering is controlled by a narrow Feshbach resonance. We show how, from first principles, it permits a hydrodynamic description of the BEC-BCS crossover from which the equation of state, intimately related to the speed of sound, can be derived. Specifically, we stress the non-universal behaviour of the equation of state at the unitary limit of infinite scattering length that arises when either, or both, of the range of the inter-atomic force and the scale of the molecular field become large.

Quasinormal modes of black holes absorbing dark energy

We study perturbations of black holes absorbing dark energy. Due to the accretion of dark energy, the black hole mass changes. We observe distinct perturbation behaviors for absorption of different forms of dark energy into the black holes. This provides the possibility of extracting information whether dark energy lies above or below the cosmological constant boundary $w=-1$. In particular, we find in the late time tail analysis that, differently from the other dark energy models, the accretion of phantom energy exhibits a growing mode in the perturbation tail. The instability behavior found in this work is consistent with the Big Rip scenario, in which all of the bound objects are torn apart with the presence of the phantom dark energy.

Thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter

We present a thermodynamical description of the interaction between holographic dark energy and dark matter. If holographic dark energy and dark matter evolve separately, each of them remains in thermodynamic equilibrium. A small interaction between them may be viewed as a stable thermal fluctuation that brings a logarithmic correction to the equilibrium entropy. From this correction we obtain a physical expression for the interaction which is consistent with phenomenological descriptions and passes reasonably well the observational tests.

The transition of equation of state of effective dark energy in the DGP model with bulk contents

We investigate the effect of the bulk contents in the DGP braneworld on the evolution of the universe. We find that although the pure DGP model cannot accommodate the transition of the effective equation of state of dark energy, once the bulk matter T^5_5 is considered, the modified model can realize the w_{eff} crossing -1. However this transition of the equation of state cannot be realized by just considering bulk-brane energy exchange or the GB effect while the bulk matter contribution is not included. T^5_5 plays the major role in the modified DGP model to have the w crossing -1 behavior. We show that our model can describe the super-acceleration of our universe with the equation of state of the effective dark energy and the Hubble parameter in agreement with observations.

The phase transition and the Quasi-Normal Modes of black Holes

We reexamined the argument that the quasinormal modes could be a probe of the phase transition of a topological black hole to a hairy configuration by investigating general scalar perturbations. We found further evidence in the quasinormal modes for this phase transition. For the general black hole configurations, we observed that although the quasinormal modes can present us different phases of different configurations, there is no dramatic change in the slope of quasinormal frequencies at the critical point of the phase transition. More detailed studies of quasinormal modes are needed to reveal the subtle behavior of the phase transition.

Interacting Dark Energy and Dark Matter: observational Constraints from Cosmological Parameters

Several observational constraints are imposed on the interacting holographic model of Dark Energy and Dark Matter. First we use the age parameter today, as given by the WMAP results. Subsequently, we explained the reason why it is possible, as recently observed, for an old quasar to be observed in early stages of the universe. We discuss this question in terms of the evolution of the age parameter as well as in terms of the structure formation. Finally, we give a detailed discussion of the constraints implied by the observed CMB low $\ell$ suppression. As a result, the interacting holographic model has been proved to be robust and with reasonable bounds predicts a non vanishing interaction of Dark Energy and Dark Matter.

Derivation of hydrodynamics for the gapless mode in the BEC-BCS crossover from the exact one-loop effective action

We show that many hydrodynamical properties of the BEC/BCS crossover in the presence of a Feshbach resonance at T=0 can be derived easily from the derivative expansion of the (exact) fully renormalized one-loop effective action. In particular, we calculate the velocity of sound throughout the BCS and BEC regimes and derive the generalized superfluid continuity equations for the composite two-fluid system.

Constraints on the interacting holographic dark energy model

We examined the interacting holographic dark energy model in a universe with spatial curvature. Using the near-flatness condition and requiring that the universe is experiencing an accelerated expansion, we have constrained the parameter space of the model and found that the model can accommodate a transition of the dark energy from $ω_D>-1$ to $ω_D<-1$.

WMAP constraint on the P-term inflationary model

In light of WMAP results, we examine the observational constraint on the P-term inflation. With the tunable parameter $f$, P-term inflation contains richer physics than D-term and F-term inflationary models. We find the logarithmic derivative spectral index with $n>1$ on large scales and $n<1$ on small scales in agreement to observation. We obtained a reasonable range for the choice of the gauge coupling constant $g$ in order to meet the requirements of WMAP observation and the expected number of the e-foldings. Although tuning $f$ and $g$ we can have larger values for the logarithmic derivative of the spectral index, it is not possible to satisfy all observational requirements for both, the spectral index and its logarithmic derivative at the same time.

Molecular Signatures in Hybrid Atomic/Molecular Bose-Einstein Condensates

As it was proposed and recently verified experimentally, the mechanism of Feshbach resonance in a condensate can create a second condensate component of molecules that coexists with the atomic condensate. In this work we investigate signatures of the presence of the molecular condensate through the equilibrium properties and collective excitations of the hybrid system of atoms and molecules, subjected to a trap, employing a time-dependent variational ansatz. We show that the shape of the condensate changes significantly by the presence of the molecules and that modes unique to this hybrid system appear at observable frequencies.

Photon Production from Nonequilibrium Disoriented Chiral Condensates in a Spherical Expansion

We study the production of photons through the non-equilibrium relaxation of a disoriented chiral condensate formed in the expanding hot central region in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. It is found that the expansion smoothes out the resonances in the process of parametric amplification such that the non-equilibrium photons are dominant to the thermal photons over the range 0.2-2 GeV. We propose that to search for non-equilibrium photons in the direct photon measurements of heavy-ion collisions can be a potential test of the formation of disoriented chiral condensates.

Equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The equilibrium and stability properties of a coupled two-component BEC is studied using a variational method and the one-dimensional model of Williams and collaborators. The variational parameters are the population fraction, translation and scaling transformation of the condensate densities, assumed to have a Gaussian shape. We study the equilibrium and stability properties as a function of the strength of the laser field and the traps displacement. We find many branches of equilibrium configurations, with a host of critical points. In all cases, the signature of the onset of criticality is the collapse of a normal mode which is a linear combination of the out of phase translation and an in phase breathing oscillation of the condensate densities. Our calculations also indicate that we have symmetry breaking effects when the traps are not displaced

Self-consistent renormalization group flow

A self-consistent renormalization group flow equation for the scalar lambda phi^4 theory is analyzed and compared with the local potential approximation. The two prescriptions coincide in the sharp cutoff limit but differ with a smooth cutoff. The dependence of the critical exponent nu on the smoothness parameter and the field of expansion is explored. An optimization scheme based on the minimum sensitivity principle is employed to ensure the most rapid convergence of nu with the level of polynomial truncation.
