Optimal Spatio-Temporal Decoupling for Bayesian Conformal Prediction

Online conformal prediction must balance fast adaptation to distribution shift against stable coverage: feedback-driven methods react quickly but become volatile, while strongly discounted Bayesian methods lag and inflate intervals at tight coverage. We introduce \textbf{State-Adaptive Bayesian Conformal Prediction (SA-BCP)}, which forms the predictive quantile as a gated convex combination of long-term temporal inertia and local spatial evidence from a kernel density estimate, controlled by a single interpretable evidence threshold $K$. We establish three results: (i) asymptotic marginal validity of the resulting intervals up to a gate-controlled bias that vanishes as spatial evidence accumulates (exact under recurrent states); (ii) a closed-form expression for the MSE-optimal threshold, $K^*_{\mathrm{MSE}}=α(1-α)/M^{\mathcal{T}}$, trading the coverage-indicator (Bernoulli) variance against the temporal structural bias $M^{\mathcal{T}}$; and (iii) a rolling-origin procedure for selecting $K$ online -- consistent under stationarity, with $O(\sqrt{T\log N})$ regret against the best fixed $K$ and, for a segmented variant, a sublinear dynamic-regret bound under sublinearly many ($B_T=o(T)$) threshold shifts. Across four financial-volatility and weather datasets, three target coverage levels, and eight baselines, SA-BCP attains at-or-above-nominal coverage in most settings while producing substantially sharper intervals -- up to roughly $3\times$ lower Winkler score than discounted Bayesian CP at the tightest coverage -- and a coverage-matched audit confirms these efficiency gains are not an artifact of under-coverage. We disclose our principal limitation: a volatility-specialized CF-GARCH competitor remains more efficient on its home volatility-base series, though it does not transfer across domains.

Airway Tree Modeling Using Dual-channel 3D UNet 3+ with Vesselness Prior

The lung airway tree modeling is essential to work for the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases, especially for X-Ray computed tomography (CT). The airway tree modeling on CT images can provide the experts with 3-dimension measurements like wall thickness, etc. This information can tremendously aid the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [1-4]. Many scholars have attempted various ways to model the lung airway tree, which can be split into two major categories based on its nature. Namely, the model-based approach and the deep learning approach. The performance of a typical model-based approach usually depends on the manual tuning of the model parameter, which can be its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is its don't require a large amount of training data which can be beneficial for a small dataset like medical imaging. On the other hand, the performance of model-based may be a misconcep-tion [5,6]. In recent years, deep learning has achieved good results in the field of medical image processing, and many scholars have used UNet-based methods in medical image segmentation [7-11]. Among all the variation of UNet, the UNet 3+ [11] have relatively good result compare to the rest of the variation of UNet. Therefor to further improve the accuracy of lung airway tree modeling, this study combines the Frangi filter [5] with UNet 3+ [11] to develop a dual-channel 3D UNet 3+. The Frangi filter is used to extracting vessel-like feature. The vessel-like feature then used as input to guide the dual-channel UNet 3+ training and testing procedures.

Predictability Analysis of Regression Problems via Conditional Entropy Estimations

In the field of machine learning, regression problems are pivotal due to their ability to predict continuous outcomes. Traditional error metrics like mean squared error, mean absolute error, and coefficient of determination measure model accuracy. The model accuracy is the consequence of the selected model and the features, which blurs the analysis of contribution. Predictability, in the other hand, focus on the predictable level of a target variable given a set of features. This study introduces conditional entropy estimators to assess predictability in regression problems, bridging this gap. We enhance and develop reliable conditional entropy estimators, particularly the KNIFE-P estimator and LMC-P estimator, which offer under- and over-estimation, providing a practical framework for predictability analysis. Extensive experiments on synthesized and real-world datasets demonstrate the robustness and utility of these estimators. Additionally, we extend the analysis to the coefficient of determination \(R^2 \), enhancing the interpretability of predictability. The results highlight the effectiveness of KNIFE-P and LMC-P in capturing the achievable performance and limitations of feature sets, providing valuable tools in the development of regression models. These indicators offer a robust framework for assessing the predictability for regression problems.

Using Multi-scale SwinTransformer-HTC with Data augmentation in CoNIC Challenge

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, so early pathological examination is very important. However, it is time-consuming and labor-intensive to identify the number and type of cells on H&E images in clinical. Therefore, automatic segmentation and classification task and counting the cellular composition of H&E images from pathological sections is proposed by CoNIC Challenge 2022. We proposed a multi-scale Swin transformer with HTC for this challenge, and also applied the known normalization methods to generate more augmentation data. Finally, our strategy showed that the multi-scale played a crucial role to identify different scale features and the augmentation arose the recognition of model.

CoNIC Challenge: Pushing the Frontiers of Nuclear Detection, Segmentation, Classification and Counting

Nuclear detection, segmentation and morphometric profiling are essential in helping us further understand the relationship between histology and patient outcome. To drive innovation in this area, we setup a community-wide challenge using the largest available dataset of its kind to assess nuclear segmentation and cellular composition. Our challenge, named CoNIC, stimulated the development of reproducible algorithms for cellular recognition with real-time result inspection on public leaderboards. We conducted an extensive post-challenge analysis based on the top-performing models using 1,658 whole-slide images of colon tissue. With around 700 million detected nuclei per model, associated features were used for dysplasia grading and survival analysis, where we demonstrated that the challenge's improvement over the previous state-of-the-art led to significant boosts in downstream performance. Our findings also suggest that eosinophils and neutrophils play an important role in the tumour microevironment. We release challenge models and WSI-level results to foster the development of further methods for biomarker discovery.

ADAM Challenge: Detecting Age-related Macular Degeneration from Fundus Images

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment among elderly in the world. Early detection of AMD is of great importance, as the vision loss caused by this disease is irreversible and permanent. Color fundus photography is the most cost-effective imaging modality to screen for retinal disorders. Cutting edge deep learning based algorithms have been recently developed for automatically detecting AMD from fundus images. However, there are still lack of a comprehensive annotated dataset and standard evaluation benchmarks. To deal with this issue, we set up the Automatic Detection challenge on Age-related Macular degeneration (ADAM), which was held as a satellite event of the ISBI 2020 conference. The ADAM challenge consisted of four tasks which cover the main aspects of detecting and characterizing AMD from fundus images, including detection of AMD, detection and segmentation of optic disc, localization of fovea, and detection and segmentation of lesions. As part of the challenge, we have released a comprehensive dataset of 1200 fundus images with AMD diagnostic labels, pixel-wise segmentation masks for both optic disc and AMD-related lesions (drusen, exudates, hemorrhages and scars, among others), as well as the coordinates corresponding to the location of the macular fovea. A uniform evaluation framework has been built to make a fair comparison of different models using this dataset. During the challenge, 610 results were submitted for online evaluation, with 11 teams finally participating in the onsite challenge. This paper introduces the challenge, the dataset and the evaluation methods, as well as summarizes the participating methods and analyzes their results for each task. In particular, we observed that the ensembling strategy and the incorporation of clinical domain knowledge were the key to improve the performance of the deep learning models.

pyStoNED: A Python Package for Convex Regression and Frontier Estimation

Shape-constrained nonparametric regression is a growing area in econometrics, statistics, operations research, machine learning and related fields. In the field of productivity and efficiency analysis, recent developments in the multivariate convex regression and related techniques such as convex quantile regression and convex expectile regression have bridged the long-standing gap between the conventional deterministic-nonparametric and stochastic-parametric methods. Unfortunately, the heavy computational burden and the lack of powerful, reliable, and fully open access computational package has slowed down the diffusion of these advanced estimation techniques to the empirical practice. The purpose of the Python package pyStoNED is to address this challenge by providing a freely available and user-friendly tool for the multivariate convex regression, convex quantile regression, convex expectile regression, isotonic regression, stochastic nonparametric envelopment of data, and related methods. This paper presents a tutorial of the pyStoNED package and illustrates its application, focusing on the estimation of frontier cost and production functions.

Coronary Artery Segmentation in Cardiac CT Angiography Using 3D Multi-Channel U-net

Vessel stenosis is a major risk factor in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). To analyze the degree of vessel stenosis for supporting the treatment management, extraction of coronary artery area from Computed Tomographic Angiography (CTA) is regarded as a key procedure. However, manual segmentation by cardiologists may be a time-consuming task, and present a significant inter-observer variation. Although various computer-aided approaches have been developed to support segmentation of coronary arteries in CTA, the results remain unreliable due to complex attenuation appearance of plaques, which are the cause of the stenosis. To overcome the difficulties caused by attenuation ambiguity, in this paper, a 3D multi-channel U-Net architecture is proposed for fully automatic 3D coronary artery reconstruction from CTA. Other than using the original CTA image, the main idea of the proposed approach is to incorporate the vesselness map into the input of the U-Net, which serves as the reinforcing information to highlight the tubular structure of coronary arteries. The experimental results show that the proposed approach could achieve a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 0.8 in comparison to around 0.6 attained by previous CNN approaches.

Learning to Detect Fake Face Images in the Wild

Although Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) can be used to generate the realistic image, improper use of these technologies brings hidden concerns. For example, GAN can be used to generate a tampered video for specific people and inappropriate events, creating images that are detrimental to a particular person, and may even affect that personal safety. In this paper, we will develop a deep forgery discriminator (DeepFD) to efficiently and effectively detect the computer-generated images. Directly learning a binary classifier is relatively tricky since it is hard to find the common discriminative features for judging the fake images generated from different GANs. To address this shortcoming, we adopt contrastive loss in seeking the typical features of the synthesized images generated by different GANs and follow by concatenating a classifier to detect such computer-generated images. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DeepFD successfully detected 94.7% fake images generated by several state-of-the-art GANs.

An Iterative Refinement Approach for Social Media Headline Prediction

In this study, we propose a novel iterative refinement approach to predict the popularity score of the social media meta-data effectively. With the rapid growth of the social media on the Internet, how to adequately forecast the view count or popularity becomes more important. Conventionally, the ensemble approach such as random forest regression achieves high and stable performance on various prediction tasks. However, most of the regression methods may not precisely predict the extreme high or low values. To address this issue, we first predict the initial popularity score and retrieve their residues. In order to correctly compensate those extreme values, we adopt an ensemble regressor to compensate the residues to further improve the prediction performance. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the proposed iterative refinement approach outperforms the state-of-the-art regression approach.

A Microcantilever-based Gas Flow Sensor for Flow Rate and Direction Detection

The purpose of this paper is to apply characteristics of residual stress that causes cantilever beams to bend for manufacturing a micro-structured gas flow sensor. This study uses a silicon wafer deposited silicon nitride layers, reassembled the gas flow sensor with four cantilever beams that perpendicular to each other and manufactured piezoresistive structure on each micro-cantilever by MEMS technologies, respectively. When the cantilever beams are formed after etching the silicon wafer, it bends up a little due to the released residual stress induced in the previous fabrication process. As air flows through the sensor upstream and downstream beam deformation was made, thus the airflow direction can be determined through comparing the resistance variation between different cantilever beams. The flow rate can also be measured by calculating the total resistance variations on the four cantilevers.

Enhanced Sensing Characteristics in MEMS-based Formaldehyde Gas Sensor

This study has successfully demonstrated a novel self-heating formaldehyde gas sensor based on a thin film of NiO sensing layer. A new fabrication process has been developed in which the Pt micro heater and electrodes are deposited directly on the substrate and the NiO thin film is deposited above on the micro heater to serve as sensing layer. Pt electrodes are formed below the sensing layer to measure the electrical conductivity changes caused by formaldehyde oxidation at the oxide surface. Furthermore, the upper sensing layer and NiO/Al2O3 co-sputtering significantly increases the sensitivity of the gas sensor, improves its detection limit capability. The microfabricated formaldehyde gas sensor presented in this study is suitable not only for industrial process monitoring, but also for the detection of formaldehyde concentrations in buildings in order to safeguard human health.
