Mitigating Relational Bias on Knowledge Graphs

Knowledge graph data are prevalent in real-world applications, and knowledge graph neural networks (KGNNs) are essential techniques for knowledge graph representation learning. Although KGNN effectively models the structural information from knowledge graphs, these frameworks amplify the underlying data bias that leads to discrimination towards certain groups or individuals in resulting applications. Additionally, as existing debiasing approaches mainly focus on the entity-wise bias, eliminating the multi-hop relational bias that pervasively exists in knowledge graphs remains an open question. However, it is very challenging to eliminate relational bias due to the sparsity of the paths that generate the bias and the non-linear proximity structure of knowledge graphs. To tackle the challenges, we propose Fair-KGNN, a KGNN framework that simultaneously alleviates multi-hop bias and preserves the proximity information of entity-to-relation in knowledge graphs. The proposed framework is generalizable to mitigate the relational bias for all types of KGNN. We develop two instances of Fair-KGNN incorporating with two state-of-the-art KGNN models, RGCN and CompGCN, to mitigate gender-occupation and nationality-salary bias. The experiments carried out on three benchmark knowledge graph datasets demonstrate that the Fair-KGNN can effectively mitigate unfair situations during representation learning while preserving the predictive performance of KGNN models.

EPSNet: Efficient Panoptic Segmentation Network with Cross-layer Attention Fusion

Panoptic segmentation is a scene parsing task which unifies semantic segmentation and instance segmentation into one single task. However, the current state-of-the-art studies did not take too much concern on inference time. In this work, we propose an Efficient Panoptic Segmentation Network (EPSNet) to tackle the panoptic segmentation tasks with fast inference speed. Basically, EPSNet generates masks based on simple linear combination of prototype masks and mask coefficients. The light-weight network branches for instance segmentation and semantic segmentation only need to predict mask coefficients and produce masks with the shared prototypes predicted by prototype network branch. Furthermore, to enhance the quality of shared prototypes, we adopt a module called "cross-layer attention fusion module", which aggregates the multi-scale features with attention mechanism helping them capture the long-range dependencies between each other. To validate the proposed work, we have conducted various experiments on the challenging COCO panoptic dataset, which achieve highly promising performance with significantly faster inference speed (53ms on GPU).

Coherent phonon manipulation in coupled mechanical resonators

Coupled mechanical oscillations were first observed in paired pendulum clocks in the mid-seventeenth century and were extensively studied for their novel sympathetic oscillation dynamics. In this era of nanotechnologies, coupled oscillations have again emerged as subjects of interest when realized in nanomechanical resonators for both practical applications and fundamental studies. However, a key obstacle to the further development of this architecture is the ability to coherently manipulate the coupled oscillations. This limitation arises as a consequence of the usually weak coupling between the constituent nanomechanical elements. Here, we report parametrically coupled mechanical resonators in which the coupling strength can be dynamically adjusted by modulating (pumping) the stress in the mechanical elements via a piezoelectric transducer. The parametric control enables the coupling rate between the two resonators to be made so strong that it exceeds their intrinsic energy dissipation rate by more than a factor of four. This ultra-strong coupling can be exploited to coherently transfer phonon populations, namely phonon Rabi oscillations, between the resonators via two coupled vibration modes, realizing superposition states of the two modes and their time-domain control. More unexpectedly, the nature of the parametric coupling can also be tuned from a linear first-order interaction to a non-linear higher-order process in which more than one pump phonon mediates the coherent oscillations. This demonstration of multi-pump phonon mixing echoes multi-wave photon mixing and suggests that concepts from non-linear optics can also be applied to mechanical systems. Ultimately, the parametric pumping is not only useful for controlling classical oscillations but can also be extended to the quantum regime, opening up the prospect of entangling two distinct macroscopic mechanical objects.
