Twofold Hidden Conformal Symmetries of the Kerr-Newman Black Hole

In this paper, we suggest that there are two different individual 2D CFTs holographically dual to the Kerr-Newman black hole, coming from the corresponding two possible limits --- the Kerr/CFT and Reissner-Nordström/CFT correspondences, namely there exist the Kerr-Newman/CFTs dualities. A probe scalar field at low frequencies turns out can exhibit two different 2D conformal symmetries (named by $J$- and $Q$-pictures, respectively) in its equation of motion when the associated parameters are suitably specified. These twofold dualities are supported by the matchings of entropies, absorption cross sections and real time correlators computed from both the gravity and the CFT sides. Our results lead to a fascinating "microscopic no hair conjecture" --- for each macroscopic hair parameter, in additional to the mass of a black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell theory, there should exist an associated holographic CFT$_2$ description.

Holography of Charged Dilaton Black Holes in General Dimensions

We study several aspects of charged dilaton black holes with planar symmetry in $(d+2)$-dimensional spacetime, generalizing the four-dimensional results investigated in arXiv:0911.3586 [hep-th]. We revisit the exact solutions with both zero and finite temperature and discuss the thermodynamics of the near-extremal black holes. We calculate the AC conductivity in the zero-temperature background by solving the corresponding Schrödinger equation and find that the AC conductivity behaves like $ω^δ$, where the exponent $δ$ is determined by the dilaton coupling $α$ and the spacetime dimension parameter $d$. Moreover, we also study the Gauss-Bonnet corrections to $η/s$ in a five-dimensional finite-temperature background.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry of the Reissner-Nordstrøm Black Holes

Motivated by recent progresses in the holographic descriptions of the Kerr and Reissner-Nordstrøm (RN) black holes, we explore the hidden conformal symmetry of nonextremal uplifted 5D RN black hole by studying the near horizon wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in this background. Similar to the Kerr black hole case, this hidden symmetry is broken by the periodicity of the associated angle coordinate in the background geometry, but the results somehow testify the dual CFT description of the nonextremal RN black holes. The duality is further supported by matching of the entropies and absorption cross sections calculated from both CFT and gravity sides.

Holographic Duals of Near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes

We consider the $\mathrm{AdS}_3/\mathrm{CFT}_2$ description of Reissner-Nordstrøm black holes by studying their uplifted counterparts in five dimensions. Assuming a natural size of the extra dimension, the near horizon geometries for the extremal limit are exactly $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^2$. We compute the scattering amplitude of a scalar field, with a mode near threshold of frequency and extra dimensional momentum, by a near extremal uplifted black hole. The absorption cross section agrees with the two point function of the CFT dual to the scalar field.

The RN/CFT Correspondence Revisited

We reconsidered the quantum gravity description of the near horizon extremal Reissner-Nordstrøm black hole in the viewpoint of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence. We found that, for pure electric case, the right moving central charge of dual 1D CFT is $6 Q^2$ which is different from the previous result $6 Q^3$ of left moving sector obtained by warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ description. We discussed the discrepancy in these two approaches and examined novel properties of our result.

Global solutions for higher-dimensional stretched small black holes

Small black holes in heterotic string theory have vanishing horizon area at the supergravity level, but the horizon is stretched to the finite radius $AdS_2 \times S^{D-2}$ geometry once higher curvature corrections are turned on. This has been demonstrated to give good agreement with microscopic entropy counting. Previous considerations, however, were based on the classical local solutions valid only in the vicinity of the event horizon. Here we address the question of global existence of extremal black holes in the $D$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory with the Gauss-Bonnet term introducing a variable dilaton coupling $a$ as a parameter. We show that asymptotically flat black holes exist only in a bounded region of the dilaton couplings $0 < a < a_{\rm cr}$ where $a_{\rm cr}$ depends on $D$. For $D \geq 5$ (but not for $D = 4$) the allowed range of $a$ includes the heterotic string values. For $a > a_{\rm cr}$ numerical solutions meet weak naked singularities at finite radii $r = r_{\rm cusp}$ (spherical cusps), where the scalar curvature diverges as $|r - r_{\rm cusp}|^{-1/2}$. For $D \geq 7$ cusps are met in pairs, so that solutions can be formally extended to asymptotically flat infinity choosing a suitable integration variable. We show, however, that radial geodesics cannot be continued through the cusp singularities, so such a continuation is unphysical.

Optimal Choices of Reference for Quasi-local Energy

We have proposed a program for determining the reference for the quasi-local energy defined in the covariant Hamiltonian formalism. Our program has been tested by applying it to the spherically symmetric spacetimes. With respect to different observers we found that the quasi-local energy can be positive, zero, or even negative. The observer measuring the maximum energy was identified; the associated energy is positive for both the Schwarzschild and the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetimes.

Holographic Duals of Black Holes in Five-dimensional Minimal Supergravity

We examine the dual conformal field theory for extremal charged black holes in five-dimensional minimal supergravity with 2 independent angular momenta. The conformal field theory Virasoro algebra, central charge, and temperature are calculated. Additionally the conformal field theory entropy is calculated using the Cardy formula and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy. The central charges are directly proportional to the angular momentum components of the black hole. In five and higher dimensions, rotations of the spacetime correspond to rotations of the central charges leading to an apparent symmetry relating the conformal field theories dual to each black hole. A rotationally invariant central charge, which is proportional to the total angular momentum, is used to discuss the supersymmetric BMPV black hole limits.

Giant Magnons and Spiky Strings on S^3 with B-field

We study solutions for a rotating string on S^3 with a background NS-NS B-field and show the existence of spiky string and giant magnon as two limiting solutions. We make a connection to the sine-Gordon model via the Polyakov worldsheet action and study the effect of B-field. In particular, we find the magnon solution can be mapped to the excitation of a fractional spin chain. We conjecture a B-deformed SYM to be the gauge theory dual to this background.

Extremal dyonic black holes in D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate extremal dyon black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMD) theory with higher curvature corrections in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet density coupled to the dilaton. In the same theory without the Gauss-Bonnet term the extremal dyon solutions exist only for discrete values of the dilaton coupling constant $a$. We show that the Gauss-Bonnet term acts as a dyon hair tonic enlarging the allowed values of $a$ to continuous domains in the plane $(a, q_m)$ the second parameter being the magnetic charge. In the limit of the vanishing curvature coupling (a large magnetic charge) the dyon solutions obtained tend to the Reissner-Nordström solution but not to the extremal dyons of the EMD theory. Both solutions have the same values of the horizon radius as a function of charges. The entropy of new dyonic black holes interpolates between the Bekenstein-Hawking value in the limit of the large magnetic charge (equivalent to the vanishing Gauss-Bonnet coupling) and twice this value for the vanishing magnetic charge. Although an expression for the entropy can be obtained analytically using purely local near-horizon solutions, its interpretation as the black hole entropy is legitimate only once the global black hole solution is known to exist, and we obtain numerically the corresponding conditions on the parameters. Thus, a purely local analysis is insufficient to fully understand the entropy of the curvature corrected black holes. We also find dyon solutions which are not asymptotically flat, but approach the linear dilaton background at infinity. They describe magnetic black holes on the electric linear dilaton background.

$G_2$ generating technique for minimal D=5 supergravity and black rings

A solution generating technique is developed for D=5 minimal supergravity with two commuting Killing vectors based on the $G_2$ U-duality arising in the reduction of the theory to three dimensions. The target space of the corresponding 3-dimensional sigma-model is the coset $G_{2(2)}/(SL(2,R)\times SL(2,R))$. Its isometries constitute the set of solution generating symmetries. These include two electric and two magnetic Harrison transformations with the corresponding two pairs of gauge transformations, three $SL(2,R) S$-duality transformations, and the three gravitational scale, gauge and Ehlers transformations (altogether 14). We construct a representation of the coset in terms of $7\times 7$ matrices realizing the automorphisms of split octonions. Generating a new solution amounts to transforming the coset matrices by one-parametric subgroups of $G_{2(2)}$ and subsequently solving the dualization equations. Using this formalism we derive a new charged black ring solution with two independent parameters of rotation.

Entropy Function and Universality of Entropy-Area Relation for Small Black Holes

We discuss the entropy-area relation for the small black holes with higher curvature corrections by using the entropy function formalism and field redefinition method. We show that the entropy $S_{BH}$ of small black hole is proportional to its horizon area $A$. In particular we find a universal result that $S_{BH}=A/2G$, the ratio is two times of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area formula in many cases of physical interest. In four dimensions, the universal relation is always true irrespective of the coefficients of the higher-order terms if the dilaton couplings are the same, which is the case for string effective theory, while in five dimensions, the relation again holds irrespective of the overall coefficient if the higher-order corrections are in the GB combination. We also discuss how this result generalizes to known physically interesting cases with Lovelock correction terms in various dimensions, and possible implications of the universal relation.

Extremal dilatonic black holes in 4D Gauss-Bonnet gravity

This is a report of our recent investigation on the extremal dilatonic black holes in four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We found that a global solution can exist only when the dilaton coupling is less than a critical value which can be determined numerically. Moreover, the black hole horizon is stretched by the Gauss-Bonnet correction and the entropy is twice the value given by Bekenstein-Hawking formula.

Quasi-local energy for cosmological models

First we briefly review our covariant Hamiltonian approach to quasi-local energy, noting that the Hamiltonian-boundary-term quasi-local energy expressions depend on the chosen boundary conditions and reference configuration. Then we present the quasi-local energy values resulting from the formalism applied to homogeneous Bianchi cosmologies. Finally we consider the quasi-local energies of the FRW cosmologies. Our results do not agree with certain widely accepted quasi-local criteria.

Extremal black holes in D=4 Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We show that four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits asymptotically flat black hole solutions with a degenerate event horizon of the Reissner-Nordström type $AdS_2\times S^2$. Such black holes exist for the dilaton coupling constant within the interval $0\leq a^2<a^2_{\rm cr}$. Black holes must be endowed with an electric charge and (possibly) with magnetic charge (dyons) but they can not be purely magnetic. Purely electric solutions are constructed numerically and the critical dilaton coupling is determined $a_{\rm cr}\simeq 0.488219703$. For each value of the dilaton coupling $a$ within this interval and for a fixed value of the Gauss--Bonnet coupling $α$ we have a family of black holes parameterized by their electric charge. Relation between the mass, the electric charge and the dilaton charge at both ends of the allowed interval of $a$ is reminiscent of the BPS condition for dilaton black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. The entropy of the DGB extremal black holes is twice the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Addendum to "Hyperbolic Space Cosmologies"

In our earlier paper [JHEP 0310 (2003) 058], we considered higher dimensional cosmological models with hyperbolic spaces. In particular the eternal accelerating expansion was obtained by studying small perturbation around the critical non-accelerated solution for $D > 10$. In this addendum, we show that there is also such a solution in the critical case $D = 10$.

Intersecting Non-extreme p-Branes and Linear Dilaton Background

We construct the general static solution to the supergravity action containing gravity, the dilaton and a set of antisymmetric forms describing the intersecting branes delocalized in the relative transverse dimensions. The solution is obtained by reducing the system to a set of separate Liouville equations (the intersection rules implying the separability); it contains the maximal number of free parameters corresponding to the rank of the differential equations. Imposing the requirement of the absence of naked singularities, we show that the general configurations are restricted to two and only two classes: the usual asymptotically flat intersecting branes, and the intersecting branes some of which are asymptotically flat and some approach the linear dilaton background at infinity. In both cases the configurations are black. These are supposed to be relevant for the description of the thermal phase of the QFT's in the corresponding Domain-Wall/QFT duality.

The Hamiltonian boundary term and quasi-local energy flux

The Hamiltonian for a gravitating region includes a boundary term which determines not only the quasi-local values but also, via the boundary variation principle, the boundary conditions. Using our covariant Hamiltonian formalism, we found four particular quasi-local energy-momentum boundary term expressions; each corresponds to a physically distinct and geometrically clear boundary condition. Here, from a consideration of the asymptotics, we show how a fundamental Hamiltonian identity naturally leads to the associated quasi-local energy flux expressions. For electromagnetism one of the four is distinguished: the only one which is gauge invariant; it gives the familiar energy density and Poynting flux. For Einstein's general relativity two different boundary condition choices correspond to quasi-local expressions which asymptotically give the ADM energy, the Trautman-Bondi energy and, moreover, an associated energy flux (both outgoing and incoming). Again there is a distinguished expression: the one which is covariant.
