Witnessing entanglement in hybrid systems

We extend the definition of entanglement witnesses based on structure factors to the case in which the position of the scatterers is quantized. This allows us to study entanglement detection in hybrid systems. We provide several examples that show how these extra degrees of freedom affect the detection of entanglement by directly contributing to the measurement statistics. We specialize the proposed witness operators for a chain of trapped ions. Within this framework, we show how the collective vibronic state of the chain can act as an undesired quantum environment and how ions quantum motion can affect the entanglement detection. Finally, we investigate some specific cases where the method proposed leads to detection of hybrid entanglement.

Experimental Detection of Quantum Channels

We demonstrate experimentally the possibility of efficiently detecting properties of quantum channels and quantum gates. The optimal detection scheme is first achieved for non entanglement breaking channels of the depolarizing form and is based on the generation and detection of polarized entangled photons. We then demonstrate channel detection for non separable maps by considering the CNOT gate and employing two-photon hyperentangled states.

A review on super dense coding over covariant noisy channels

We study the performance of the super dense coding protocol in the presence of quantum channels with covariant noise. We first consider the bipartite case and review in a unified way the case of general Pauli channels. We discuss both the cases of unitary and non-unitary encoding. We also study the multipartite scenario and investigate the case of many senders and one receiver.

Entanglement detection by Bragg scattering

We show how to measure the structural witnesses proposed in [P. Krammer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 100502 (2009)] for detecting entanglement in a spin chain using photon scattering. The procedure, moreover, allows one to measure the two-point correlation function of the spin array. This proposal could be performed in existing experimental platforms realizing ion chains in Paul traps or atomic arrays in optical lattices.

Experimental achievement of the entanglement assisted capacity for the depolarizing channel

We experimentally demonstrate the achievement of the entanglement assisted capacity for classical information transmission over a depolarizing channel. The implementation is based on the generation and local manipulation of 2-qubit Bell states, which are finally measured at the receiver by a complete Bell state analysis. The depolarizing channel is realized by introducing quantum noise in a controlled way on one of the two qubits. This work demonstrates the achievement of the maximum allowed amount of information that can be shared in the presence of noise and the highest reported value in the noiseless case.

Distributed super dense coding over noisy channels

We study multipartite super dense coding in the presence of a covariant noisy channel. We investigate the case of many senders and one receiver, considering both unitary and non-unitary encoding. We study the scenarios where the senders apply local encoding or global encoding. We show that, up to some pre-processing on the original state, the senders cannot do better encoding than local, unitary encoding. We then introduce general Pauli channels as a significant example of covariant maps. Considering Pauli channels, we provide examples for which the super dense coding capacity is explicitly determined.

Optimal super dense coding over memory channels

We study the super dense coding capacity in the presence of quantum channels with correlated noise. We investigate both the cases of unitary and non-unitary encoding. Pauli channels for arbitrary dimensions are treated explicitly. The super dense coding capacity for some special channels and resource states is derived for unitary encoding. We also provide an example of a memory channel where non-unitary encoding leads to an improvement in the super dense coding capacity.

Quantum error correction with degenerate codes for correlated noise

We introduce a quantum packing bound on the minimal resources required by nondegenerate error correction codes for any kind of noise. We prove that degenerate codes can outperform nondegenerate ones in the presence of correlated noise, by exhibiting examples where the quantum packing bound is violated.

Recovering quantum information through partial access to the environment

We investigate the possibility of correcting errors occurring on a multipartite system through a feedback mechanism that acquires information from partial access to the environment. A partial control scheme of this kind might be useful when dealing with correlated errors. In fact, in such a case, it could be enough to gather local information to decide what kind of global recovery to perform. Then, we apply this scheme to the depolarizing and correlated errors, and quantify its performance by means of the entanglement fidelity.

Optimal super dense coding over noisy quantum channels

We investigate super dense coding in the presence of noise, i.e. the subsystems of the entangled resource state have to pass a noisy unital quantum channel between the sender and the receiver. We discuss explicitly the case of Pauli channels in arbitrary dimension and derive the super dense coding capacity (i.e. the optimal information transfer) for some given resource states. We also study the case that the initial resource state can be chosen: for the qubit depolarizing channel we show that there is a threshold value for the noise parameter, below which the super dense coding protocol is optimized by a maximally entangled initial state, while above the threshold the dense coding capacity for any entangled initial state is smaller than the one for a product state. Finally, we provide an example of a noisy channel where non-unitary pre-processing increases the super dense coding capacity, as compared to only unitary encoding.

Multipartite entanglement detection via structure factors

We establish a relation between entanglement of a many-body system and its diffractive properties, where the link is given by structure factors. Based on these, we provide a general analytical construction of multi-qubit entanglement witnesses. The proposed witnesses contain two-point correlations. They could be either measured in a scattering experiment or via local measurements, depending on the underlying physical system. For some explicit examples of witnesses we analyze the properties of the states that are detected by them. We further study the robustness of these witnesses with respect to noise.

Qubit channels with small correlations

We introduce a class of quantum channels with correlations acting on pairs of qubits, where the correlation takes the form of a shift operator onto a maximally entangled state. We optimise the output purity and show that below a certain threshold the optimum is achieved by partially entangled states whose degree of entanglement increases monotonically with the correlation parameter. Above this threshold, the optimum is achieved by the maximally entangled state characterizing the shift. Although, a full analysis can only be done for the 2-norm, both numerical and heuristic arguments indicate that this behavior and the optimal inputs are independent of p>1 when the optimal output purity is measured using the p-norm.

Optimal phase estimation in quantum networks

We address the problem of estimating the phase phi given N copies of the phase rotation u(phi) within an array of quantum operations in finite dimensions. We first consider the special case where the array consists of an arbitrary input state followed by any arrangement of the N phase rotations, and ending with a POVM. We optimise the POVM for a given input state and fixed arrangement. Then we also optimise the input state for some specific cost functions. In all cases, the optimal POVM is equivalent to a quantum Fourier transform in an appropriate basis. Examples and applications are given.

Economical realization of phase covariant devices in arbitrary dimensions

We describe a unified framework of phase covariant multi user quantum transformations for d-dimensional quantum systems. We derive the optimal phase covariant cloning and transposition tranformations for multi phase states. We show that for some particular relations between the input and output number of copies they correspond to economical tranformations, which can be achieved without the need of auxiliary systems. We prove a relation between the optimal phase covariant cloning and transposition maps, and optimal estimation of multiple phases for equatorial states.

Universal and phase covariant superbroadcasting for mixed qubit states

We describe a general framework to study covariant symmetric broadcasting maps for mixed qubit states. We explicitly derive the optimal N to M superbroadcasting maps, achieving optimal purification of the single-site output copy, in both the universal and the phase covariant cases. We also study the bipartite entanglement properties of the superbroadcast states.

Robustness of a quantum key distribution with two and three mutually unbiased bases

We study the robustness of various protocols for quantum key distribution. We first consider the case of qutrits and study quantum protocols that employ two and three mutually unbiased bases. We then derive the optimal eavesdropping strategy for two mutually unbiased bases in dimension four and generalize the result to a quantum key distribution protocol that uses two mutually unbiased bases in arbitrary finite dimension.

Optimal superbroadcasting of mixed qubit states

"Broadcasting", namely distributing information over many users, suffers in-principle limitations when the information is quantum. This poses a critical issue in quantum information theory, for distributed processing and networked communications. For pure states ideal broadcasting coincides with the so-called "quantum cloning", describing an hypothetical ideal device capable of producing from a finite number N of copies of a state (drawn from a set) a larger number M>N of output copies of the same state. Since such a transformation is not isometric, it cannot be achieved by any physical machine for a quantum state drawn from a non orthogonal set: this is essentially the content of the "no-cloning" theorem. For mixed states the situation is quite different, since from the point of view of each single user a local marginal mixed state is indistinguishable from the partial trace of an entangled state, and there are infinitely many joint output states that correspond to ideal broadcasting. Indeed, for sufficiently large number $N$ of input copies, not only ideal broadcasting of noncommuting mixed states is possible, but one can even purify the state in the process. Such state purification with an increasing number of copies has been named "superbroadcasting". In this paper we will review some recent results on superbroadcasting of qubits, for two different sets of input states, corresponding to universally covariant broadcasting and to phase-covariant broadcasting of equatorial states.

Optimal Time-Reversal of Multi-phase Equatorial States

Even though the time-reversal is unphysical (it corresponds to the complex conjugation of the density matrix), for some restricted set of states it can be achieved unitarily, typically when there is a common de-phasing in a n-level system. However, in the presence of multiple phases (i. e. a different de-phasing for each element of an orthogonal basis occurs) the time reversal is no longer physically possible. In this paper we derive the channel which optimally approaches in fidelity the time-reversal of multi-phase equatorial states in arbitrary (finite) dimension. We show that, in contrast to the customary case of the Universal-NOT on qubits (or the universal conjugation in arbitrary dimension), the optimal phase covariant time-reversal for equatorial states is a nonclassical channel, which cannot be achieved via a measurement/preparation procedure. Unitary realizations of the optimal time-reversal channel are given with minimal ancillary dimension, exploiting the simplex structure of the optimal maps.
