D0-brane realizations of the resolution of a reduced singular curve

Based on examples from superstring/D-brane theory since the work of Douglas and Moore on resolution of singularities of a superstring target-space $Y$ via a D-brane probe, the richness and the complexity of the stack of punctual D0-branes on a variety, and as a guiding question, we lay down a conjecture that any resolution $Y^{\prime}\rightarrow Y$ of a variety $Y$ over ${\Bbb C}$ can be factored through an embedding of $Y^{\prime}$ into the stack ${\frak M}^{0^{A z^f}_{\;p}}_r (Y)$ of punctual D0-branes of rank $r$ on $Y$ for $r\ge r_0$ in ${\Bbb N}$, where $r_0$ depends on the germ of singularities of $Y$. We prove that this conjecture holds for the resolution $ρ: C^{\prime}\rightarrow C$ of a reduced singular curve $C$ over ${\Bbb C}$. In string-theoretical language, this says that the resolution $C^{\prime}$ of a singular curve $C$ always arises from an appropriate D0-brane aggregation on $C$ and that the rank of the Chan-Paton module of the D0-branes involved can be chosen to be arbitrarily large.

Immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and its deviation from Joyce's criteria: Potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a sL $S^3$

Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which resembles a similar phenomenon for holomorphic curves that wrap around a rigid smooth rational curve in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold in Gromov-Witten theory.

Algebraic cobordism of filtered vector bundles on varieties: Notes on a work of Lee and Pandharipande

The construction of double point cobordism groups of vector bundles on varieties in the work [Lee-P] (arXiv:1002.1500 [math.AG]) of Yuan-Pin Lee and Rahul Pandharipande gives immediately double point cobordism groups of filtered vector bundles on varieties. We note also that among the four basic operations -- direct sum, tensor product, dual, and Hom -- on vector bundles on varieties, only taking dual is compatible with double point cobordisms of vector bundles on varieties in general, by a demonstration on an example of vector bundles on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. A question on refined and/or higher algebraic cobordisms of vector bundles on varieties is posed in the end.

D-branes of A-type, their deformations, and Morse cobordism of A-branes on Calabi-Yau 3-folds under a split attractor flow: Donaldson/Alexander-Hilden-Lozano-Montesinos-Thurston/Hurwitz/Denef-Joyce meeting Polchinski-Grothendieck

In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz for D-branes on a Calabi-Yau space. Basic phenomena of D-branes such as Higgsing/un-Higgsing and large- vs. small-brane wrapping can be realized via deformations of such morphisms. Classical results of Alexander, Hilden, Lozano, Montesinos, and Thurston suggest then a genus-like expansion of the path-integral of D3-branes. Similarly for D2-branes and M2-branes. In the last section, we use the technical results of Joyce on desingularizations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with conical singularities to explain how A-branes thus defined can be driven and re-assemble under a split attractor flow, as studied in an earlier work of Denef. This section is to be read with arXiv:hep-th/0107152 of Denef and arXiv:math.DG/0303272 of Joyce.

D-branes and Azumaya noncommutative geometry: From Polchinski to Grothendieck

We review first Azumaya geometry and D-branes in the realm of algebraic geometry along the line of Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz from our earlier work and then use it as background to introduce Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a projective complex manifold. This gives us a description of D-branes of A-type. Donaldson's picture of Lagrangian and special Lagrangian submanifolds as selected from the zero-locus of a moment map on a related space of maps can be merged into the setting. As a pedagogical toy model, we study D-branes of A-type in a Calabi-Yau torus. Simple as it is, it reveals several features of D-branes, including their assembling/disassembling. The 4th theme of Sec. 2.4, the 2nd theme of Sec. 4.2, and Sec. 4.3 are to be read respectively with Gómez-Sharpe (arXiv:hep-th/0008150), Donagi-Katz-Sharpe (arXiv:hep-th/0309270), and Denef (arXiv:hep-th/0107152). Some string-theoretical remarks are given at the end of each section.

Nontrivial Azumaya noncommutative schemes, morphisms therefrom, and their extension by the sheaf of algebras of differential operators: D-branes in a $B$-field background à la Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz

In this continuation of [L-Y1], [L-L-S-Y], [L-Y2], and [L-Y3] (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG], arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], arXiv:0901.0342 [math.AG], arXiv:0907.0268 [math.AG]), we study D-branes in a target-space with a fixed $B$-field background $(Y,α_B)$ along the line of the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz, explained in [L-Y1] and further extended in the current work. We focus first on the gauge-field-twist effect of $B$-field to the Chan-Paton module on D-branes. Basic properties of the moduli space of D-branes, as morphisms from Azumaya schemes with a twisted fundamental module to $(Y,α_B)$, are given. For holomorphic D-strings, we prove a valuation-criterion property of this moduli space. The setting is then extended to take into account also the deformation-quantization-type noncommutative geometry effect of $B$-field to both the D-brane world-volume and the superstring target-space(-time) $Y$. This brings the notion of twisted ${\cal D}$-modules that are realizable as twisted locally-free coherent modules with a flat connection into the study. We use this to realize the notion of both the classical and the quantum spectral covers as morphisms from Azumaya schemes with a fundamental module (with a flat connection in the latter case) in a very special situation. The 3rd theme (subtitled "Sharp vs. Polchinski-Grothendieck") of Sec. 2.2 is to be read with the work [Sh3] (arXiv:hep-th/0102197) of Sharp while Sec. 5.2 (subtitled less appropriately "Dijkgraaf-Holland-Sułkowski-Vafa vs. Polchinski-Grothendieck") is to be read with the related sections in [D-H-S-V] (arXiv:0709.4446 [hep-th]) and [D-H-S] (arXiv:0810.4157 [hep-th]) of Dijkgraaf, Hollands, Sułkowski, and Vafa.

Azumaya structure on D-branes and deformations and resolutions of a conifold revisited: Klebanov-Strassler-Witten vs. Polchinski-Grothendieck

In this sequel to [L-Y1], [L-L-S-Y], and [L-Y2] (respectively arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG], arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], and arXiv:0901.0342 [math.AG]), we study a D-brane probe on a conifold from the viewpoint of the Azumaya structure on D-branes and toric geometry. The details of how deformations and resolutions of the standard toric conifold $Y$ can be obtained via morphisms from Azumaya points are given. This should be compared with the quantum-field-theoretic/D-brany picture of deformations and resolutions of a conifold via a D-brane probe sitting at the conifold singularity in the work of Klebanov and Witten [K-W] (arXiv:hep-th/9807080) and Klebanov and Strasser [K-S] (arXiv:hep-th/0007191). A comparison with resolutions via noncommutative desingularizations is given in the end.

Azumaya structure on D-branes and resolution of ADE orbifold singularities revisited: Douglas-Moore vs. Polchinski-Grothendieck

In this continuation of [L-Y1] and [L-L-S-Y], we explain how the Azumaya structure on D-branes together with a netted categorical quotient construction produces the same resolution of ADE orbifold singularities as that arises as the vacuum manifold/variety of the supersymmetric quantum field theory on the D-brane probe world-volume, given by Douglas and Moore [D-M] under the string-theory contents and constructed earlier through hyper-Kähler quotients by Kronheimer and Nakajima. This is consistent with the moral behind this project that Azumaya-type structure on D-branes themselves -- stated as the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz in [L-Y1] -- gives a mathematical reason for many originally-open-string-induced properties of D-branes.

Morphisms from Azumaya prestable curves with a fundamental module to a projective variety: Topological D-strings as a master object for curves

This is a continuation of our study of the foundations of D-branes from the viewpoint of Grothendieck in the region of the related Wilson's theory-space where "branes" are still branes. In this work, we focus on D-strings and construct the moduli stack of morphisms from Azumaya prestable curves $C^{Az}$ with a fundamental module ${\cal E}$ to a fixed target $Y$ of a given combinatorial type. Such a morphism gives a prototype for a Wick-rotated D-string of B-type on $Y$, following the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz, and this stack serves as a ground toward a mathematical theory of topological D-string world-sheet instantons.

Azumaya-type noncommutative spaces and morphisms therefrom: Polchinski's D-branes in string theory from Grothendieck's viewpoint

We explain how Polchinski's work on D-branes re-read from a noncommutative version of Grothendieck's equivalence of local geometries and function rings gives rise to an intrinsic prototype definition of D-branes (of B-type) as an Azumaya-type noncommutative space. Several originally open-string induced properties of D-branes can be reproduced solely by this intrinsic definition. We study also the moduli space of D0-branes on a commutative target space in this setup. Some of its features resembles gas of D0-branes in Vafa's work.

Degeneration and gluing of Kuranishi structures in Gromov-Witten theory and the degeneration/gluing axioms for open Gromov-Witten invariants under a symplectic cut

We study the degeneration and the gluing of Kuranishi structures in Gromov-Witten theory under a symplectic cut. This leads us to a degeneration axiom and a gluing axiom for open Gromov-Witten invariants. They provide then a route to the construction of virtual fundamental chains via specialization. Comments on the equivalence of the degeneration formula of closed Gromov-Witten invariants by Li-Ruan/Li versus Ionel-Parker are given in the Appendix.

Transformation of algebraic Gromov-Witten invariants of three-folds under flops and small extremal transitions, with an appendix from the stringy and the symplectic viewpoint

We study how Gromov-Witten invariants of projective 3-folds transform under a standard flop and a small extremal transition in the algebro-geometric setting from the recent development of algebraic relative Gromov-Witten theory and its applications. This gives an algebro-geometric account of Witten's wall-crossing formula for correlation functions of the descendant nonlinear sigma model in adjacent geometric phases of a gauge linear sigma model and of the symplectic approach in an earlier work of An-Min Li and Yongbin Ruan on the same problem. A terse account from the stringy and the symplectic viewpoint is given in the appendix to complement and compare to the discussion in the main text.

Extracting Gromov-Witten invariants of a conifold from semi-stable reduction and relative GW invariants of pairs

The study of open/closed string duality and large $N$ duality suggests a Gromov-Witten theory for conifolds that sits on the border of both a closed Gromov-Witten theory and an open Gromov-Witten theory. In this work we employ the result of Jun Li on Gromov-Witten theory for a projective singular variety of the gluing form $Y_1\cup_D Y_2$ to extract Gromov-Witten invariants of a conifold.

A degeneration formula of Gromov-Witten invariants with respect to a curve class for degenerations from blow-ups

In two very detailed, technical, and fundamental works, Jun Li constructed a theory of Gromov-Witten invariants for a singular scheme of the gluing form $Y_1\cup_D Y_2$ that arises from a degeneration $W/{\Bbb A}^1$ and a theory of relative Gromov-Witten invariants for a codimension-1 relative pair $(Y,D)$. As a summit, he derived a degeneration formula that relates a finite summation of the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of a general smooth fiber $W_t$ of $W/{\Bbb A}^1$ to the Gromov-Witten invariants of the singular fiber $W_0=Y_1\cup_D Y_2$ via gluing the relative pairs $(Y_1,D)$ and $(Y_2,D)$. The finite sum mentioned above depends on a relative ample line bundle $H$ on $W/{\Bbb A}^1$. His theory has already applications to string theory and mathematics alike. For other new applications of Jun Li's theory, one needs a refined degeneration formula that depends on a curve class $β$ in $A_{\ast}(W_t)$ or $H_2(W_t;{\Bbb Z})$, rather than on the line bundle $H$. Some monodromy effect has to be taken care of to deal with this. For the simple but useful case of a degeneration $W/{\Bbb A}^1$ that arises from blowing up a trivial family $X\times{\Bbb A}^1$, we explain how the details of Jun Li's work can be employed to reach such a desired degeneration formula. The related set $Ω_{(g,k;β)}$ of admissible triples adapted to $(g,k;β)$ that appears in the formula can be obtained via an analysis on the intersection numbers of relevant cycles and a study of Mori cones that appear in the problem. This set is intrinsically determined by $(g,k;β)$ and the normal bundle ${\cal N}_{Z/X}$ of the smooth subscheme $Z$ in $X$ to be blown up.

$S^1$-fixed-points in hyper-Quot-schemes and an exact mirror formula for flag manifolds from the extended mirror principle diagram

In [L-L-Y1, III: Sec. 5.4] on mirror principle, a method was developed to compute the integral $\int_{X}τ^{\ast}e^{H\cdot t}\cap {\mathbf 1}_d$ for a flag manifold $X=\Fl_{r_1, ..., r_I}({\Bbb C}^n)$ via an extended mirror principle diagram. This method turns the required localization computation on the augmented moduli stack $\bar{\cal M}_{0,0}(\CP^1\times X)$ of stable maps to a localization computation on a hyper-Quot-scheme $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$. In this article, the detail of this localization computation on $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$ is carried out. The necessary ingredients in the computation, notably, the $S^1$-fixed-point components and the distinguished ones $E_{(A;0)}$ in $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$, the $S^1$-equivariant Euler class of $E_{(A;0)}$ in $\HQuot({\cal E}^n)$, and a push-forward formula of cohomology classes involved in the problem from the total space of a restrictive flag manifold bundle to its base manifold are given. With these, an exact expression of $\int_{X}τ^{\ast}e^{H\cdot t}\cap {\mathbf 1}_d$ is obtained. Comments on the Hori-Vafa conjecture are given in the end.

Toric morphisms and fibrations of toric Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces

Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be understood by the various restrictions of a line bundle with a section that defines the hypersurface. These general toric geometry discussions give rise to a computational scheme for the details of a toric morphism and the induced fibration of toric hypersurfaces therein. We apply this scheme to study the family of 4-dimensional elliptic Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces that appear in a recent work of Braun-Candelas-dlOssa-Grassi. The Maple codes that are employed for the computation are provided. Some directions for future work are listed in the end.

On A-twisted moduli stack for curves from Witten's gauged linear sigma models

Witten's gauged linear sigma model [Wi1] is one of the universal frameworks or structures that lie behind stringy dualities. Its A-twisted moduli space at genus 0 case has been used in the Mirror Principle [L-L-Y] that relates Gromov-Witten invariants and mirror symmetry computations. In this paper the A-twisted moduli stack for higher genus curves is defined and systematically studied. It is proved that such a moduli stack is an Artin stack. For genus 0, it has the A-twisted moduli space of [M-P] as the coarse moduli space. The detailed proof of the regularity of the collapsing morphism by Jun Li in [L-L-Y: I and II] can be viewed as a natural morphism from the moduli stack of genus 0 stable maps to the A-twisted moduli stack at genus 0. Due to the technical demand of stacks to physicists and the conceptual demand of supersymmetry to mathematicians, a brief introduction of each topic that is most relevant to the main contents of this paper is given in the beginning and the appendix respectively. Themes for further study are listed in the end.

The $S^1$ fixed points in Quot-schemes and mirror principle computations

We describe the $S^1$-action on the Quot-scheme $\Quot({\cal E}^n)$ associated to the trivial bundle ${\cal E}^n=CP^1\times{\smallBbb C}^n$. In particlular, the topology of the $S^1$-fixed-point components in $\Quot({\cal E}^n)$ and the $S^1$-weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on $S^1$ fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the $S^1$-fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The $S^1$-equivariant Euler class $e_{S^1}$ of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down $e_{S^1}$ directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.
