A Critical Analysis of Deployed Use Cases for Quantum Key Distribution and Comparison with Post-Quantum Cryptography

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is currently being discussed as a technology to safeguard communication in a future where quantum computers compromise traditional public-key cryptosystems. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive security evaluation of QKD-based solutions, focusing on real-world use cases sourced from academic literature and industry reports. We analyze these use cases, assess their security and identify the possible advantages of deploying QKD-based solutions. We further compare QKD-based solutions with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), the alternative approach to achieving security when quantum computers compromise traditional public-key cryptosystems, evaluating their respective suitability for each scenario. Based on this comparative analysis, we critically discuss and comment on which use cases QKD is suited for, considering factors such as implementation complexity, scalability, and long-term security. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the role QKD could play in future cryptographic infrastructures and offer guidance to decision-makers considering the deployment of QKD.

Rate-adaptive Reconciliation for Experimental Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution with Discrete Modulation over a Free-space Optical Link

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has been proposed as a method for securely exchanging keys to protect against the security concerns caused by potential advancements in quantum computing. In addition to optical fibre transmission, the free-space optical (FSO) channel is an interesting channel for CV-QKD, as it is possible to share keys over this channel wirelessly. The instability of the FSO channel caused by turbulence-induced fading, however, can cause a degradation in the system's performance. One of the most important aspects of CV-QKD is the reconciliation step, which significantly impacts the performance of the CV-QKD system. Hence, rate-adaptive reconciliation is necessary for CV-QKD over FSO to combat the fluctuations in the channel and improve secret key rates (SKRs). Therefore, in this paper, we simulate the impact of discrete modulation on the reconciliation efficiency and consider the use of $d$-dimensional reconciliation with $d > 8$ to mitigate this impact, improving reconciliation efficiencies by up to 3.4%. We validate our results by experimentally demonstrating CV-QKD over a turbulent FSO link and demonstrate SKR gains by up to 165%. Furthermore, we optimise the reconciliation efficiency for FSO links, achieving additional SKR gains of up to 7.6%.

Mitigation of Polarization-Induced Fading in Optical Vector Network Analyzer for the Characterization of km-scale Space-Division Multiplexing Fibers

We propose an optimized optical vector network analyzer with automatic polarization control to stabilize the reference arm polarization throughout the sweep range. We demonstrate this technique, successfully removing the polarization-induced fading and measurement distortions in insertion loss by characterizing a 10 km multi-core fiber.

Introducing 4D Geometric Shell Shaping for Mitigating Nonlinear Interference Noise

Four dimensional geometric shell shaping (4D-GSS) is introduced as an approach for closing the nonlinearity-caused shaping gap. This format is designed at the spectral efficiency of 8 b/4D-sym and is compared against polarization-multiplexed 16QAM (PM-16QAM) and probabilistically shaped PM-16QAM (PS-PM-16QAM) in a 400ZR-compatible transmission setup with high amount of nonlinearities. Reach increase and nonlinearity tolerance are evaluated in terms of achievable information rates and post-FEC bit-error rate. Numerical simulations for a single-span, single-channel show that 4D-GSS achieves increased nonlinear tolerance and reach increase against PM-16QAM and PS-PM-16QAM when optimized for bit-metric decoding (RBMD). In terms of RBMD, gains are small with a reach increase of 1.7% compared to PM-16QAM. When optimizing for mutual information, a larger reach increase of 3% is achieved compared to PM-16QAM. Moreover, the introduced GSS scheme provides a scalable framework for designing well-structured 4D modulation formats with low complexity.

Experimental Investigation of Mode Diversity Reception Using an Optical Turbulence Generator and Digital Holography

Mode diversity reception is experimentally investigated using an optical turbulence generator, off-axis digital holography, and digital demultiplexing. The results confirm improved fibre coupling efficiency when receiving the optical field using a multi-mode fibre instead of a single-mode fibre under turbulent conditions, specifically beam wander. The coupling loss is reduced by receiving additional modes.

Real-time Transmission of Geometrically-shaped Signals using a Software-defined GPU-based Optical Receiver

A software-defined optical receiver is implemented on an off-the-shelf commercial graphics processing unit (GPU). The receiver provides real-time signal processing functionality to process 1 GBaud minimum phase (MP) 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, 64-, 128-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) as well as geometrically shaped (GS) 8- and 128-QAM signals using Kramers-Kronig (KK) coherent detection. Experimental validation of this receiver over a 91~km field-deployed optical fiber link between two Tokyo locations is shown with detailed optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) investigations. A net data rate of 5 Gbps using 64-QAM is demonstrated.

High-Cardinality Hybrid Shaping for 4D Modulation Formats in Optical Communications Optimized via End-to-End Learning

In this paper we carry out a joint optimization of probabilistic (PS) and geometric shaping (GS) for four-dimensional (4D) modulation formats in long-haul coherent wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical fiber communications using an auto-encoder framework. We propose a 4D 10 bits/symbol constellation which we obtained via end-to-end deep learning over the split-step Fourier model of the fiber channel. The constellation achieved 13.6% reach increase at a data rate of approximately 400 Gbits/second in comparison to the ubiquitously employed polarization multiplexed 32-QAM format at a forward error correction overhead of 20%.
