Topological Entropy for Shifts of Finite Type Over $\mathbb{Z}$ and Trees

We study the topological entropy of hom tree-shifts and show that, although the topological entropy is not a conjugacy invariant for tree-shifts in general, it remains invariant for hom tree higher block shifts. In doi:10.1016/j.tcs.2018.05.034 and doi:10.3934/dcds.2020186, Petersen and Salama demonstrated the existence of topological entropy for tree-shifts and $h(\mathcal{T}_X) \geq h(X)$, where $\mathcal{T}_X$ is the hom tree-shift derived from $X$. We characterize a necessary and sufficient condition when the equality holds for the case where $X$ is a shift of finite type. In addition, two novel phenomena have been revealed for tree-shifts. There is a gap in the set of topological entropy of hom tree-shifts of finite type, which makes such a set not dense. Last but not least, the topological entropy of a reducible hom tree-shift of finite type is equal to or larger than that of its maximal irreducible component.

Stem and topological entropy on Cayley trees

We consider the existence of the topological entropy of shift spaces on a finitely generated semigroup whose Cayley graph is a tree. The considered semigroups include free groups. On the other hand, the notion of stem entropy is introduced. For shift spaces on a strict free semigroup, the stem entropy coincides with the topological entropy. We reveal a sufficient condition for the existence of the stem entropy of shift spaces on a semigroup. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the topological entropy exists in many cases and is identical to the stem entropy.

Characterization and Topological Behavior of Homomorphism Tree-Shifts

The purpose of this article is twofold. On one hand, we reveal the equivalence of shift of finite type between a one-sided shift $X$ and its associated hom tree-shift $\mathcal{T}_{X}$, as well as the equivalence in the sofic shift. On the other hand, we investigate the interrelationship among the comparable mixing properties on tree-shifts as those on multidimensional shift spaces. They include irreducibility, topologically mixing, block gluing, and strong irreducibility, all of which are defined in the spirit of classical multidimensional shift, complete prefix code (CPC), and uniform CPC. In summary, the mixing properties defined in all three manners coincide for $\mathcal{T}_{X}$. Furthermore, an equivalence between irreducibility on $\mathcal{T}_{A}$ and irreducibility on $X_A$ are seen, and so is one between topologically mixing on $\mathcal{T}_{A}$ and mixing property on $X_A$, where $X_A$ is the one-sided shift space induced by the matrix $A$ and $T_A$ is the associated tree-shift. These equivalences are consistent with the mixing properties on $X$ or $X_A$ when viewed as a degenerate tree-shift.

Topologically Mixing Properties of Multiplicative Integer System

Motivated from the study of multiple ergodic average, the investigation of multiplicative shift spaces has drawn much of interest among researchers. This paper focuses on the relation of topologically mixing properties between multiplicative shift spaces and traditional shift spaces. Suppose that $\mathsf{X}_Ω^{(l)}$ is the multiplicative subshift derived from the shift space $Ω$ with given $l > 1$. We show that $\mathsf{X}_Ω^{(l)}$ is (topologically) transitive/mixing if and only if $Ω$ is extensible/mixing. After introducing $l$-directional mixing property, we derive the equivalence between $l$-directional mixing property of $\mathsf{X}_Ω^{(l)}$ and weakly mixing property of $Ω$.

Decidability of irreducible tree shifts of finite type

We reveal an algorithm for determining the complete prefix code irreducibility (CPC-irreducibility) of dyadic trees labeled by a finite alphabet. By introducing an extended directed graph representation of tree shift of finite type (TSFT), we show that the CPC-irreducibility of TSFTs is related to the connectivity of its graph representation, which is a similar result to one-dimensional shifts of finite type.

UHop: An Unrestricted-Hop Relation Extraction Framework for Knowledge-Based Question Answering

In relation extraction for knowledge-based question answering, searching from one entity to another entity via a single relation is called "one hop". In related work, an exhaustive search from all one-hop relations, two-hop relations, and so on to the max-hop relations in the knowledge graph is necessary but expensive. Therefore, the number of hops is generally restricted to two or three. In this paper, we propose UHop, an unrestricted-hop framework which relaxes this restriction by use of a transition-based search framework to replace the relation-chain-based search one. We conduct experiments on conventional 1- and 2-hop questions as well as lengthy questions, including datasets such as WebQSP, PathQuestion, and Grid World. Results show that the proposed framework enables the ability to halt, works well with state-of-the-art models, achieves competitive performance without exhaustive searches, and opens the performance gap for long relation paths.

Topological Degree of Shift Spaces on Monoids

This paper considers the topological degree of $G$-shifts of finite type for the case where $G$ is a nonabelian monoid. Whenever the Cayley graph of $G$ has a finite representation and the relationships among the generators of $G$ are determined by a matrix $A$, the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ are revealed as the number of children of the graph. After introducing an algorithm for the computation of the degree, the degree spectrum, which is finite, relates to a collection of matrices in which the sum of each row of every matrix is bounded by the number of children of the graph. Furthermore, the algorithm extends to $G$ of finite free-followers.

On the topological entropy of subshifts of finite type on free semigroups

In this paper, we provide an effective method to compute the topological entropies of $G$-subshifts of finite type ($G$-SFTs) with $G=F_{d}$ and $S_{d}$, the free group and free semigroup with $d$ generators respectively. We develop the entropy formula by analyzing the corresponding systems of nonlinear recursive equations (SNREs). Four types of SNREs of $S_{2}$-SFTs, namely the types $\mathbf{E},\mathbf{D},\mathbf{C}$ and $\mathbf{O}$, are introduced and we could compute their entropies explicitly. This enables us to give the complete characterization of $S_{2}$-SFTs on two symbols. That is, the set of entropies of $S_{2}$-SFTs on two symbols is equal to $\mathbf{E}\cup \mathbf{D}\cup \mathbf{C}\cup \mathbf{O}$. The methods developed in $S_{d}$-SFTs will also be applied to the study of the entropy theory of $F_{d}$-SFTs. The entropy formulae of $S_{d}$-, $F_{d}$-golden mean shifts and $k$-colored chessboards are also presented herein.

Entropy bifurcation of neural networks on Cayley trees

It has been demonstrated that excitable media with a tree structure performed better than other network topologies, it is natural to consider neural networks defined on Cayley trees. The investigation of a symbolic space called tree-shift of finite type is important when it comes to the discussion of the equilibrium solutions of neural networks on Cayley trees. Entropy is a frequently used invariant for measuring the complexity of a system, and constant entropy for an open set of coupling weights between neurons means that the specific network is stable. This paper gives a complete characterization for entropy spectrum of neural networks on Cayley trees and reveals whether the entropy bifurcates when the coupling weights change.

Coloring Fibonacci-Cayley tree: An application to neural networks

This paper investigates the coloring problem on Fibonacci-Cayley tree, which is a Cayley graph whose vertex set is the Fibonacci sequence. More precisely, we elucidate the complexity of shifts of finite type defined on Fibonacci-Cayley tree via an invariant called entropy. It comes that computing the entropy of a Fibonacci tree-shift of finite type is equivalent to studying a nonlinear recursive system. After proposing an algorithm for the computation of entropy, we apply the result to neural networks defined on Fibonacci-Cayley tree, which reflect those neural systems with neuronal dysfunction. Aside from demonstrating a surprising phenomenon that there are only two possibilities of entropy for neural networks on Fibonacci-Cayley tree, we reveal the formula of the boundary in the parameter space.

Characterization for entropy of shifts of finite type on Cayley trees

The notion of tree-shifts constitutes an intermediate class in between one-sided shift spaces and multidimensional ones. This paper proposes an algorithm for computing of the entropy of a tree-shift of finite type. Meanwhile, the entropy of a tree-shift of finite type is $\dfrac{1}{p} \ln λ$ for some $p \in \mathbb{N}$, where $λ$ is a Perron number. This extends Lind's work on one-dimensional shifts of finite type. As an application, the entropy minimality problem is investigated, and we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for a tree-shift of finite type being entropy minimal with some additional conditions.

Reversibility Problem of Multidimensional Finite Cellular Automata

While the reversibility of multidimensional cellular automata is undecidable and there exists a criterion for determining if a multidimensional linear cellular automaton is reversible, there are only a few results about the reversibility problem of multidimensional linear cellular automata under boundary conditions. This work proposes a criterion for testing the reversibility of a multidimensional linear cellular automaton under null boundary condition and an algorithm for the computation of its reverse, if it exists. The investigation of the dynamical behavior of a multidimensional linear cellular automaton under null boundary condition is equivalent to elucidating the properties of block Toeplitz matrix. The proposed criterion significantly reduce the computational cost whenever the number of cells or the dimension is large; the discussion can also apply to cellular automata under periodic boundary condition with a minor modification.

Tree-Shifts: The entropy of tree-shifts of finite type

This paper studies the entropy of tree-shifts of finite type with and without boundary conditions. We demonstrate that computing the entropy of a tree-shift of finite type is equivalent to solving a system of nonlinear recurrence equations. Furthermore, the entropy of the binary Markov tree-shifts over two symbols is either $0$ or $\ln 2$. Meanwhile, the realization of a class of reals including multinacci numbers is elaborated, which indicates that tree-shifts are capable of rich phenomena. By considering the influence of three different types of boundary conditions, say, the periodic, Dirichlet, and Neumann boundary conditions, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the coincidence of entropy with and without boundary conditions are addressed.

Mixing properties of tree-shifts

The uncertainty of multidimensional shift spaces draws attracted attention of researchers. For example, the emptiness problem is undecidable; there exist aperiodic shifts of finite type; there is a nonempty shift of finite type exhibiting nonextensible local patterns. This paper investigates symbolic dynamics on Cayley trees and gives affirmative answers to the above questions in tree-shifts. Beyond that, with introducing block gluing tree-shift, a sufficient condition of exhibiting positive topological entropy is revealed.

Reversibility of Linear Cellular Automata on Cayley Trees with Periodic Boundary Condition

While one-dimensional cellular automata have been well studied, there are relatively few results about multidimensional cellular automata; the investigation of cellular automata defined on Cayley trees constitutes an intermediate class. This paper studies the reversibility of linear cellular automata defined on Cayley trees with periodic boundary condition, where the local rule is given by $f(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_d) = b x_0 + c_1 x_1 + \cdots + c_d x_d \pmod{m}$ for some integers $m, d \geq 2$. The reversibility problem relates to solving a polynomial derived from a recurrence relation, and an explicit formula is revealed; as an example, the complete criteria of the reversibility of linear cellular automata defined on Cayley trees over $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$, and some other specific case are addressed. Further, this study achieves a possible approach for determining the reversibility of multidimensional cellular automata, which is known as a undecidable problem.

On the escape rate of unique beta-expansions

Let $1<β\leq 2$. It is well-known that the set of points in $% [0,1/(β-1)]$ having unique $β$-expansion, in other words, those points whose orbits under greedy $β$-transformation escape a hole depending on $β$, is of zero Lebesgue measure. The corresponding escape rate is investigated in this paper. A formula which links the Hausdorff dimension of univoque set and escape rate is established in this study. Then we also proved that such rate forms a devil's staircase function with respect to $β$.

On the structure of multi-layer cellular neural networks: Complexity between two layers

Let $\mathbf{Y}$ be the solution space of an $n$-layer cellular neural network, and let $\mathbf{Y}^{(i)}$ and $\mathbf{Y}^{(j)}$ be the hidden spaces, where $1 \leq i, j \leq n$. ($\mathbf{Y}^{(n)}$ is called the output space.) The classification and the existence of factor maps between two hidden spaces, that reaches the same topological entropies, are investigated in [Ban et al., J.~Differential Equations \textbf{252}, 4563-4597, 2012]. This paper elucidates the existence of factor maps between those hidden spaces carrying distinct topological entropies. For either case, the Hausdorff dimension $\dim \mathbf{Y}^{(i)}$ and $\dim \mathbf{Y}^{(j)}$ can be calculated. Furthermore, the dimension of $\mathbf{Y}^{(i)}$ and $\mathbf{Y}^{(j)}$ are related upon the factor map between them.

On the Bernoulli Automorphism of Reversible Linear Cellular Automata

This investigation studies the ergodic properties of reversible linear cellular automata over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ for $m \in \mathbb{N}$. We show that a reversible linear cellular automaton is either a Bernoulli automorphism or non-ergodic. This gives an affirmative answer to an open problem proposed in [Pivato, Ergodc theory of cellular automata, Encyclopedia of Complexity and Systems Science, 2009, pp.~2980-3015] for the case of reversible linear cellular automata.
