Enhancement of Mid-/High-Z Impurity Transport by Continuous Li-granule Dropping in a Stellarator Plasma

An enhancement of core impurity transport is observed in high-density plasmas of the stellarator LHD heated by neutral beam injection when continuous lithium (Li) granule dropping is performed. In the experiments reported here, in which the TESPEL is employed to inject trace amounts of titanium (Ti) and molybdenum (Mo) into the plasma core, confinement times for these impurities are seen to reduce significantly when Li dropping is applied, this reduction being more notable for Mo. In order to gain some initial insight into these observations, simulations are performed using the drift-kinetic transport code SFINCS for the Mo case. These simulations indicate that, while neoclassical transport prevails for the main plasma components (electrons, majority ions and low Z impurities), the classical contribution seems to be dominant for transporting Mo impurities. In summary, this work reports the first experimental observation of the degradation of mid-Z and high-Z impurity confinement induced by the continuous dropping of Li granules into a high-density stellarator plasma. In the case of the Mo impurity, simulations suggest that classical transport is the key mechanism underlying the enhanced impurity transport.

Puzzling Isotonic Odd-Even Staggering of Charge Radii in Deformed Rare Earth Nuclei

The nuclear charge radius is a fundamental observable that encodes key aspects of nuclear structure, deformation, and pairing. Isotonic (constant neutron number) systematics in the deformed rare-earth region have long suggested that odd-$Z$ nuclei are more compact than their even-$Z$ neighbors - except for Lu, whose recommended radius appeared anomalously large relative to Yb and Hf. We report a high-precision determination of the natural-abundance-averaged Lu-Yb charge-radius difference using extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy of highly charged Na-like and Mg-like ions, supported by high-accuracy relativistic atomic-structure calculations - a recently introduced method with the unique ability to measure inter-element charge radius differences. Combined with muonic-atom and optical isotope-shift data, our result resolves the longstanding Lu inversion anomaly and reestablishes a pronounced odd-even staggering along the $N=94$ isotonic chain. The magnitude of this staggering is unexpectedly large, far exceeding that observed in semi-magic nuclei and in deformed isotopic sequences. State-of-the-art nuclear density functional theory calculations, including quantified uncertainties, fail to reproduce this enhancement, possibly indicating missing structural effects in current models. Our work demonstrates the power of highly charged ions for precise, element-crossing charge-radius measurements and provides stringent new constraints for future theoretical and experimental studies of nuclear-size systematics.

Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Highly Charged Lu and Yb Ions for Nuclear Charge Radius Determination

We report a high-precision determination of the natural-abundance-averaged nuclear charge-radius difference between Yb and Lu using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy of highly charged ions (HCIs). By measuring the $D_1$ transition energies in Na- and Mg-like charge states of Lu and Yb confined in the Tokyo electron-beam ion trap, we extract meV-level energy shifts that are directly sensitive to nuclear-size effects. Transition-energy differences obtained from these spectra are compared with state-of-the-art relativistic many-body perturbation theory, including a new treatment of Mg-like ions. We develop a generalized framework to propagate uncertainties arising from nuclear deformation and surface diffuseness and evaluate corresponding nuclear-sensitivity coefficients. Combining Na- and Mg-like results yields mutually consistent radius differences, demonstrating the robustness of both the experimental calibration and the theoretical predictions. To determine absolute isotopic radii, we perform a generalized least-squares optimization incorporating our HCI constraints together with optical-isotope-shift data and muonic-atom results. This analysis establishes that the $^{175}$Lu charge radius is smaller than that of $^{174}$Yb, restoring the expected odd-even staggering across the $N=94$ isotonic chain. Our recommended value, $R(^{175}\text{Lu}) = 5.291(11)$ fm, reduces the uncertainty of the Lu radius by a factor of three compared with the previous electron-scattering result and resolves a long-standing anomaly in rare-earth nuclear systematics. This work demonstrates that EUV spectroscopy of HCIs provides a powerful and broadly applicable method for precision nuclear-structure studies in heavy, deformed nuclei. The techniques developed here enable future investigations of isotonic and isoelectronic sequences, including radioactive nuclides and higher-$Z$ systems.

Quantum and Thermal Phase Transitions of the Triangular SU(3) Heisenberg Model under Magnetic Fields

We study the quantum and thermal phase transition phenomena of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on triangular lattice in the presence of magnetic fields. Performing a scaling analysis on large-size cluster mean-field calculations endowed with a density-matrix-renormalization-group solver, we reveal the quantum phases selected by quantum fluctuations from the massively degenerate classical ground-state manifold. The magnetization process up to saturation reflects three different magnetic phases. The low- and high-field phases have strong nematic nature, and especially the latter is found only via a nontrivial reconstruction of symmetry generators from the standard spin and quadrupolar description. We also perform a semiclassical Monte Carlo simulations to show that thermal fluctuations prefer the same three phases as well. Moreover, we find that exotic topological phase transitions driven by the binding-unbinding of fractional (half-)vortices take place, due to the nematicity of the low- and high-field phases. Possible experimental realization with alkaline-earth-like cold atoms is also discussed.

Robust Regression for Automatic Fusion Plasma Analysis based on Generative Modeling

The first step to realize automatic experimental data analysis for fusion plasma experiments is fitting noisy data of temperature and density spatial profiles, which are obtained routinely. However, it has been difficult to construct algorithms that fit all the data without over- and under-fitting. In this paper, we show that this difficulty originates from the lack of knowledge of the probability distribution that the measurement data follow. We demonstrate the use of a machine learning technique to estimate the data distribution and to construct an optimal generative model. We show that the fitting algorithm based on the generative modeling outperforms classical heuristic methods in terms of the stability as well as the accuracy.

Whistler wave plasma production in CHS

Rf plasma production in Whistler waves range of frequency f/fci >1 is applied on the compact helical system (CHS) in a steady state operation with low toroidal magnetic field strength, where f and fci are rf and ion cyclotron frequencies, respectively. Maximum rf power and pulse width are is170kW and 10 msec at 9MHz, respectively. The line averaged plasma density as high as 2x10^18 m-3 (He plasma) is produced in the region of toroidal magnetic field strength on magnetic axis B=100G~1.5kG and the electron temperature measured at plasma periphery is about 20eV. The wave magnetic field strength measured at the plasma periphery showed the evidence of the toroidal eigen modes of the Whistler waves. The additional long pulse microwave heating of 2.45GHz (>200msec) is applied and it sustains the plasmas while the microwave itself can not ignite plasmas when B<600G.
