Exact finite-size corrections for the square lattice Ising model with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions

Finite-size scaling, finite-size corrections, and boundary effects for critical systems have attracted much attention in recent years. Here we derive exact finite-size corrections for the free energy F and the specific heat C of the critical ferromagnetic Ising model on the M x 2N square lattice with Brascamp-Kunz (BK) boundary conditions [J. Math. Phys. 15, 66 (1974)] and compared such results with those under toroidal boundary conditions. In the limit N \to \infty we obtain the expansion of the free energy for infinitely long strip with BK boundary conditions. Our results are consistent with the conformal field theory prediction for the mixed boundary conditions by Cardy [Nucl. Phys. {\bf B 275}, 200 (1986)] although the definitions of boundary conditions in two cases are different in one side of the long strip.

Correlation function of random heteropolymer solutions

We study the density-density correlation function of the dense random heteropolymer solutions. We show that a phase transition is possible due to the heterogeneity of polymers. We also show that the critical behavior of the system is described by the O(N) model at N=0.

Exact Ampitude Ratio and Finite-Size Corrections for the M x N Square Lattice Ising Model The :

Let f, U and C represent, respectively, the free energy, the internal energy and the specific heat of the critical Ising model on the square M x N lattice with periodic boundary conditions. We find that N f and U are well-defined odd function of 1/N. We also find that ratios of subdominant (N^(-2 i - 1)) finite-size corrections amplitudes for the internal energy and the specific heat are constant. The free energy and the internal energy at the critical point are calculated asymtotically up to N^(-5) order, and the specific heat up to N^(-3) order.

Proteinlike behavior of a spin system near the transition between ferromagnet and spin glass

A simple spin system is studied as an analog for proteins. We investigate how the introduction of randomness and frustration into the system effects the designability and stability of ground state configurations. We observe that the spin system exhibits protein-like behavior in the vicinity of the transition between ferromagnet and spin glass. Our results illuminate some guiding principles in protein evolution.

Exact Universal Amplitude Ratios for Two-Dimensional Ising Models and a Quantum Spin Chain

We have derived analytic expressions for the amplitudes of correction terms in the critical free energy and inverse correlation length expansions for square, honeycomb, and plane-triangular lattices in strip geometry. We have found that ratio of amplitudes for all of these lattices is universal. We have also obtained similar expansions for the ground state energy and the first energy gap of a critical quantum spin chain and find that the amplitude ratios have the same values.

Random-cluster multi-histogram sampling for the q-state Potts model

Using the random-cluster representation of the $q$-state Potts models we consider the pooling of data from cluster-update Monte Carlo simulations for different thermal couplings $K$ and number of states per spin $q$. Proper combination of histograms allows for the evaluation of thermal averages in a broad range of $K$ and $q$ values, including non-integer values of $q$. Due to restrictions in the sampling process proper normalization of the combined histogram data is non-trivial. We discuss the different possibilities and analyze their respective ranges of applicability.

Surface critical behavior of random systems at the special transition

We study the surface critical behavior of semi-infinite quenched random Ising-like systems at the special transition using three dimensional massive field theory up to the two-loop approximation. Besides, we extend up to the next-to leading order, the previous first-order results of the $\sqrtε$ expansion obtained by Ohno and Okabe [Phys. Rev. B 46, 5917 (1992)]. The numerical estimates for surface critical exponents in both cases are computed by means of the Pade analysis. Moreover, in the case of the massive field theory we perform Pade-Borel resummation of the resulting two-loop series expansions for surface critical exponents. The obtained results confirm that in a system with quenched bulk randomness the plane boundary is characterized by a new set of surface critical exponents.

Universal scaling functions for bond percolation on planar random and square lattices with multiple percolating clusters

Percolation models with multiple percolating clusters have attracted much attention in recent years. Here we use Monte Carlo simulations to study bond percolation on $L_{1}\times L_{2}$ planar random lattices, duals of random lattices, and square lattices with free and periodic boundary conditions, in vertical and horizontal directions, respectively, and with various aspect ratio $L_{1}/L_{2}$. We calculate the probability for the appearance of $n$ percolating clusters, $W_{n},$ the percolating probabilities, $P$, the average fraction of lattice bonds (sites) in the percolating clusters, $ _{n}$ ($ _{n}$), and the probability distribution function for the fraction $c$ of lattice bonds (sites), in percolating clusters of subgraphs with $n$ percolating clusters, $f_{n}(c^{b})$ ($f_{n}(c^{s})$). Using a small number of nonuniversal metric factors, we find that $W_{n}$, $P$, $ _{n}$ ($ _{n}$), and $f_{n}(c^{b})$ ($f_{n}(c^{s})$) for random lattices, duals of random lattices, and square lattices have the same universal finite-size scaling functions. We also find that nonuniversal metric factors are independent of boundary conditions and aspect ratios.

Pattern Competition in the Photorefractive Semiconductors

We analytically study the photorefractive Gunn effect in n-GaAs subjected to two external laser beams which form a moving interference pattern (MIP) in the semiconductor. When the intensity of the spatially independent part of the MIP, denoted by $I_0$, is small, the system has a periodic domain train (PDT), consistent with the results of linear stability analysis. When $I_0$ is large, the space-charge field induced by the MIP will compete with the PDT and result in complex dynamics, including driven chaos via quasiperiodic route.

Multifractal characterization of stochastic resonance

We use a multifractal formalism to study the effect of stochastic resonance in a noisy bistable system driven by various input signals. To characterize the response of a stochastic bistable system we introduce a new measure based on the calculation of a singularity spectrum for a return time sequence. We use wavelet transform modulus maxima method for the singularity spectrum computations. It is shown that the degree of multifractality defined as a width of singularity spectrum can be successfully used as a measure of complexity both in the case of periodic and aperiodic (stochastic or chaotic) input signals. We show that in the case of periodic driving force singularity spectrum can change its structure qualitatively becoming monofractal in the regime of stochastic synchronization. This fact allows us to consider the degree of multifractality as a new measure of stochastic synchronization also. Moreover, our calculations have shown that the effect of stochastic resonance can be catched by this measure even from a very short return time sequence. We use also the proposed approach to characterize the noise-enhanced dynamics of a coupled stochastic neurons model.

Surface critical behavior of random systems at the ordinary transition

We calculate the surface critical exponents of the ordinary transition occuring in semi-infinite, quenched dilute Ising-like systems. This is done by applying the field theoretic approach directly in d=3 dimensions up to the two-loop approximation, as well as in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. At $d=4-ε$ we extend, up to the next-to-leading order, the previous first-order results of the $\sqrtε$ expansion by Ohno and Okabe [Phys.Rev.B 46, 5917 (1992)]. In both cases the numerical estimates for surface exponents are computed using Pade approximants extrapolating the perturbation theory expansions. The obtained results indicate that the critical behavior of semi-infinite systems with quenched bulk disorder is characterized by the new set of surface critical exponents.

Cluster Analysis of the Ising Model and Universal Finite-Size Scaling

The recent progress in the study of finite-size scaling (FSS) properties of the Ising model is briefly reviewed. We calculate the universal FSS functions for the Binder parameter $g$ and the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for the Ising model on $L_1 \times L_2$ two-dimensional lattices with tilted boundary conditions. We show that the FSS functions are universal for fixed sets of the aspect ratio $L_1/L_2$ and the tilt parameter. We also study the percolating properties of the Ising model, giving attention to the effects of the aspect ratio of finite systems. We elucidate the origin of the complex structure of $p(m)$ for the system with large aspect ratio by the multiple-percolating-cluster argument.

Geometry, thermodynamics, and finite-size corrections in the critical Potts model

We establish an intriguing connection between geometry and thermodynamics in the critical q-state Potts model on two-dimensional lattices, using the q-state bond-correlated percolation model (QBCPM) representation. We find that the number of clusters of the QBCPM has an energy-like singularity for q different from 1, which is reached and supported by exact results, numerical simulation, and scaling arguments. We also establish that the finite-size correction to the number of bonds, has no constant term and explains the divergence of related quantities as q --> 4, the multicritical point. Similar analyses are applicable to a variety of other systems.

The 6-vertex model of hydrogen-bonded crystals with bond defects

It is shown that the percolation model of hydrogen-bonded crystals, which is a 6-vertex model with bond defects, is completely equivalent with an 8-vertex model in an external electric field. Using this equivalence we solve exactly a particular 6-vertex model with bond defects. The general solution for the Bethe-like lattice is also analyzed.

Partition function zeros of the Q-state Potts model for non-integer Q

The distribution of the zeros of the partition function in the complex temperature plane (Fisher zeros) of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model is studied for non-integer Q. On $L\times L$ self-dual lattices studied ($L\le8$), no Fisher zero lies on the unit circle $p_0=e^{iθ}$ in the complex $p=(e^{βJ}-1)/\sqrt{Q}$ plane for Q<1, while some of the Fisher zeros lie on the unit circle for Q>1 and the number of such zeros increases with increasing Q. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic properties of the Potts model are investigated using the distribution of the Fisher zeros. For the Potts ferromagnet we verify the den Nijs formula for the thermal exponent $y_t$. For the Potts antiferromagnet we also verify the Baxter conjecture for the critical temperature and present new results for the thermal exponents in the range 0<Q<3.

New mechanism of X-ray radiation from a relativistic charged particle in a dielectric random medium

We have considered X-ray radiation of a relativistic charged particle moving in a system consisting of microspheres distributed randomly in a dielectric material. A new mechanism based on the diffusional scattering of pseudophotons is suggested. The result leads to a stronger dependence of radiation intensity on the particle energy, than that predicted by the traditional transition radiation theory, and explains a recent experiment on such a system of randomly distributed superconducting granules.

Inversion Symmetry and Critical Exponents of Dissipating Waves in the Sandpile Model

Statistics of waves of topplings in the Sandpile model is analysed both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the probability distribution of dissipating waves of topplings that touch the boundary of the system obeys power-law with critical exponent 5/8. This exponent is not indeendent and is related to the well-known exponent of the probability distribution of last waves of topplings by exact inversion symmetry s -> 1/s.

Cluster Analysis and Finite-Size Scaling for Ising Spin Systems

Based on the connection between the Ising model and a correlated percolation model, we calculate the distribution function for the fraction ($c$) of lattice sites in percolating clusters in subgraphs with $n$ percolating clusters, $f_n(c)$, and the distribution function for magnetization ($m$) in subgraphs with $n$ percolating clusters, $p_n(m)$. We find that $f_n(c)$ and $p_n(m)$ have very good finite-size scaling behavior and they have universal finite-size scaling functions for the model on square, plane triangular, and honeycomb lattices when aspect ratios of these lattices have the proportions 1:$\sqrt 3$/2:$\sqrt 3$. The complex structure of the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for the system with large aspect ratio could be understood from the independent orientations of two or more percolation clusters in such system.
