Szegő kernel asymptotics and Kodaira embedding theorems of Levi-flat CR manifolds

Let $X$ be an orientable compact Levi-flat CR manifold and let $L$ be a positive CR complex line bundle over $X$. We prove that certain microlocal conjugations of the associated Szegő kernel admits an asymptotic expansion with respect to high powers of $L$. As an application, we give a Szegő kernel proof of the Kodaira type embedding theorem on Levi-flat CR manifolds due to Ohsawa and Sibony.

Berezin-Toeplitz quantization for lower energy forms

Let $M$ be an arbitrary complex manifold and let $L$ be a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle over $M$. We introduce the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of the open set of $M$ where the curvature on $L$ is non-degenerate. The quantum spaces are the spectral spaces corresponding to $[0,k^{-N}]$ ($N>1$ fixed), of the Kodaira Laplace operator acting on forms with values in tensor powers $L^k$. We establish the asymptotic expansion of associated Toeplitz operators and their composition as $k\to\infty$ and we define the corresponding star-product. If the Kodaira Laplace operator has a certain spectral gap this method yields quantization by means of harmonic forms. As applications, we obtain the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization for semi-positive and big line bundles.

Equivariant Kodaira embedding of CR manifolds with circle action

We consider a compact CR manifold with a transversal CR locally free circle action endowed with a rigid positive CR line bundle. We prove that a certain weighted Fourier-Szegő kernel of the CR sections in the high tensor powers admits a full asymptotic expansion. As a consequence, we establish an equivariant Kodaira embedding theorem.

Szegö kernel asymptotics for high power of CR line bundles and Kodaira embedding theorems on CR manifolds

Let $X$ be an abstract not necessarily compact orientable CR manifold of dimension $2n-1$, $n\geqslant2$, and let $L^k$ be the $k$-th tensor power of a CR complex line bundle $L$ over $X$. Given $q\in\set{0,1,\ldots,n-1}$, let $\Box^{(q)}_{b,k}$ be the Gaffney extension of Kohn Laplacian for $(0,q)$ forms with values in $L^k$. For $λ\geq0$, let $Π^{(q)}_{k,\leqλ}:=E((-\infty,λ])$, where $E$ denotes the spectral measure of $\Box^{(q)}_{b,k}$. In this work, we prove that $Π^{(q)}_{k,\leq k^{-N_0}}F^*_k$, $F_kΠ^{(q)}_{k,\leq k^{-N_0}}F^*_k$, $N_0\geq1$, admit asymptotic expansions on the non-degenerate part of the characteristic manifold of $\Box^{(q)}_{b,k}$, where $F_k$ is some kind of microlocal cut-off function. Moreover, we show that $F_kΠ^{(q)}_{k,\leq0}F^*_k$ admits a full asymptotic expansion if $\Box^{(q)}_{b,k}$ has small spectral gap property with respect to $F_k$ and $Π^{(q)}_{k,\leq0}$ is $k$-negligible away the diagonal with respect to $F_k$. By using these asymptotics, we establish almost Kodaira embedding theorems on CR manifolds and Kodaira embedding theorems on CR manifolds with transversal CR $S^1$ actions.

Heat kernel asymptotics, local index theorem and trace integrals for CR manifolds with $S^1$ action

Among those transversally elliptic operators initiated by Atiyah and Singer, Kohn's $\Box_b$ operator on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action is a natural one of geometric significance for complex analysts. Our first main result establishes an asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such an operator with values in its Fourier components, which involves an unprecedented contribution in terms of a distance function from lower dimensional strata of the $S^1$-action. Our second main result computes a local index density, in terms of \emph{tangential} characteristic forms, on such manifolds including \emph{Sasakian manifolds} of interest in String Theory, by showing that certain non-trivial contributions from strata in the heat kernel expansion will eventually cancel out by applying Getzler's rescaling technique to off-diagonal estimates. This leads to a local result which can be thought of as a type of local index theorem on these CR manifolds. As applications of our CR index theorem we can prove a CR version of Grauert-Riemenschneider criterion, and produce many CR functions on a weakly pseudoconvex CR manifold with transversal $S^1$ action and many CR sections on some class of CR manifolds, answering (on this class of manifolds) some long-standing questions in several complex variables and CR geometry. We give examples of these CR manifolds, some of which arise from Brieskorn manifolds. Moreover in some cases, without use of equivariant cohomology method nor keeping contributions arising from lower dimensional strata as done in previous works, we can reinterpret Kawasaki's Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for a complex orbifold with an orbifold holomorphic line bundle, as an index theorem obtained by a single integral over a smooth CR manifold which is essentially the circle bundle of this line bundle.

$G$-invariant Szegö kernel asymptotics and CR reduction

Let $(X, T^{1,0}X)$ be a compact connected orientable CR manifold of dimension $2n+1$ with non-degenerate Levi curvature. Assume that $X$ admits a connected compact Lie group action $G$. Under certain natural assumptions about the group action $G$, we show that the $G$-invariant Szegö kernel for $(0,q)$ forms is a complex Fourier integral operator, smoothing away $μ^{-1}(0)$ and there is a precise description of the singularity near $μ^{-1}(0)$, where $μ$ denotes the CR moment map. We apply our result to the case when $X$ admits a transversal CR $S^1$ action and deduce an asymptotic expansion for the $m$-th Fourier component of the $G$-invariant Szegö kernel for $(0,q)$ forms as $m \to+\infty$. As an application, we show that if $m$ large enough, quantization commutes with reduction.

The asymptotics of the analytic torsion on CR manifolds with $S^1$ action

Let $X$ be a compact connected strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold of dimension $2n+1, n \ge 1$ with a transversal CR $S^1$-action on $X$. We introduce the Fourier components of the Ray-Singer analytic torsion on $X$ with respect to the $S^1$-action. We establish an asymptotic formula for the Fourier components of the analytic torsion with respect to the $S^1$-action. This generalizes the asymptotic formula of Bismut and Vasserot on the holomorphic Ray-Singer torsion associated with high powers of a positive line bundle to strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with a transversal CR $S^1$-action.

Morse inequalities for Fourier components of Kohn-Rossi cohomology of CR manifolds with $S^1$-action

Let $X$ be a compact connected CR manifold of dimension $2n-1, n\geq 2$ with a transversal CR $S^1$-action on $X$. We study the Fourier components of the Kohn-Rossi cohomology with respect to the $S^1$-action. By studying the Szegö kernel of the Fourier components we establish the Morse inequalities on $X$. Using the Morse inequalities we have established on $X$ we prove that there are abundant CR functions on $X$ when $X$ is weakly pseudoconvex and strongly pseudoconvex at a point.

Extremal metrics for the ${Q}^\prime$-curvature in three dimensions

We construct contact forms with constant $Q^\prime$-curvature on compact three-dimensional CR manifolds which admit a pseudo-Einstein contact form and satisfy some natural positivity conditions. These contact forms are obtained by minimizing the CR analogue of the $II$-functional from conformal geometry. Two crucial steps are to show that the $P^\prime$-operator can be regarded as an elliptic pseudodifferential operator and to compute the leading order terms of the asymptotic expansion of the Green's function for $\sqrt{P^\prime}$.

On the singularities of the Szegö projections on lower energy forms

Let $X$ be an abstract not necessarily compact orientable CR manifold of dimension $2n-1$, $n\geqslant2$. Let $\Box^{(q)}_{b}$ be the Gaffney extension of Kohn Laplacian for $(0,q)$-forms. We show that the spectral function of $\Box^{(q)}_b$ admits a full asymptotic expansion on the non-degenerate part of the Levi form. As a corollary, we deduce that if $X$ is compact and the Levi form is non-degenerate of constant signature on $X$, then the spectrum of $\Box^{(q)}_b$ in $]0,\infty[$ consists of point eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. Moreover, we show that a certain microlocal conjugation of the associated Szegö kernel admits an asymptotic expansion under a local closed range condition. As applications, we establish the Szegö kernel asymptotic expansions on some weakly pseudoconvex CR manifolds and on CR manifolds with transversal CR $S^1$ actions. By using these asymptotics, we establish some local embedding theorems on CR manifolds and we give an analytic proof of a theorem of Lempert asserting that a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold of dimension three with a transversal CR $S^1$ action can be CR embedded into $\mathbb{C}^N$, for some $N\in\mathbb N$.

On CR Paneitz operators and CR pluriharmonic functions

Let $(X,T^{1,0}X)$ be a compact orientable embeddable three dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold and let ${\rm P\,}$ be the associated CR Paneitz operator. In this paper, we show that (I) ${\rm P\,}$ is self-adjoint and ${\rm P\,}$ has $L^2$ closed range. Let $N$ and $Π$ be the associated partial inverse and the orthogonal projection onto ${\rm Ker\,}{\rm P\,}$ respectively, then $N$ and $Π$ enjoy some regularity properties. (II) Let $\hat{\mathcal{P}}$ and $\hat{\mathcal{P}_0}$ be the space of $L^2$ CR pluriharmonic functions and the space of real part of $L^2$ global CR functions respectively. Let $S$ be the associated Szegö projection and let $τ$, $τ_0$ be the orthogonal projections onto $\hat{\mathcal{P}}$ and $\hat{\mathcal{P}_0}$ respectively. Then, $Π=S+\ol S+F_0$, $τ=S+\ol S+F_1$, $τ_0=S+\ol S+F_2$, where $F_0, F_1, F_2$ are smoothing operators on $X$. In particular, $Π$, $τ$ and $τ_0$ are Fourier integral operators with complex phases and $\hat{\mathcal{P}}^\perp\bigcap{\rm Ker\,}{\rm P\,}$, $\hat{\mathcal{P}_0}^\perp\bigcap\hat{\mathcal{P}}$, $\hat{\mathcal{P}_0}^\perp\bigcap{\rm Ker\,}{\rm P\,}$ are all finite dimensional subspaces of $C^\infty(X)$ (it is well-known that $\hat{\mathcal{P}_0}\subset\hat{\mathcal{P}}\subset{\rm Ker\,}{\rm P\,}$). (III) ${\rm Spec\,}{\rm P\,}$ is a discrete subset of $\Real$ and for every $λ\in{\rm Spec\,}{\rm P\,}$, $λ\neq0$, $λ$ is an eigenvalue of ${\rm P\,}$ and the associated eigenspace $H_λ({\rm P\,})$ is a finite dimensional subspace of $C^\infty(X)$.

Asymptotics of spectral function of lower energy forms and Bergman kernel of semi-positive and big line bundles

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the spectral function corresponding to the lower part of the spectrum of the Kodaira Laplacian on high tensor powers of a holomorphic line bundle. This implies a full asymptotic expansion of this function on the set where the curvature of the line bundle is non-degenerate. As application we obtain the Bergman kernel asymptotics for adjoint semi-positive line bundles over complete Kaehler manifolds, on the set where the curvature is positive. We also prove the asymptotics for big line bundles endowed with singular Hermitian metrics with strictly positive curvature current. In this case the full asymptotics holds outside the singular locus of the metric.

Solving the Kohn Laplacian on asymptotically flat CR manifolds of dimension 3

Let $(\hat{X}, T^{1,0} \hat{X})$ be a compact orientable CR embeddable three dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold, where $T^{1,0} \hat{X}$ is a CR structure on $\hat{X}$. Fix a point $p \in \hat{X}$ and take a global contact form $\hatθ$ so that $\hatθ$ is asymptotically flat near $p$. Then $(\hat{X}, T^{1,0} \hat{X}, \hatθ)$ is a pseudohermitian $3$-manifold. Let $G_p \in C^{\infty} (\hat{X} \setminus \{p\})$, $G_p > 0$, with $G_p(x) \sim \vartheta(x,p)^{-2}$ near $p$, where $\vartheta(x,y)$ denotes the natural pseudohermitian distance on $\hat{X}$. Consider the new pseudohermitian $3$-manifold with a blow-up of contact form $(\hat{X} \setminus \{p\}, T^{1,0} \hat{X}, G^2_p \hatθ)$ and let $\Box_{b}$ denote the corresponding Kohn Laplacian on $\hat{X} \setminus \{p\}$. In this paper, we prove that the weighted Kohn Laplacian $G^2_p \Box_b$ has closed range in $L^2$ with respect to the weighted volume form $G^2_p \hatθ \wedge d\hatθ$, and that the associated partial inverse and the Szegö projection enjoy some regularity properties near $p$. As an application, we prove the existence of some special functions in the kernel of $\Box_{b}$ that grow at a specific rate at $p$. The existence of such functions provides an important ingredient for the proof of a positive mass theorem in 3-dimensional CR geometry by Cheng-Malchiodi-Yang.

In this paper we prove that if $h^L$ is positive at some point of $X$ and conditions Y(0) and Y(1) hold at each point of $X$, then $L$ is big.

The second coefficient of the asymptotic expansion of the weighted Bergman kernel for $(0,q)$ forms on $\Complex^n$

Let $ϕ\in C^\infty(\Complex^n)$ be a given real valued function. We assume that $\pr\ddbarϕ$ is non-degenerate of constant signature $(n_-,n_+)$ on $\Complex^n$. When $q=n_-$, it is well-known that the Bergman kernel for $(0,q)$ forms with respect to the $k$-th weight $e^{-2kϕ}$, $k>0$, admits a full asymptotic expansion in $k$. In this paper, we compute the trace of the second coefficient of the asymptotic expansion on the diagonal.
