Superconducting critical temperature and dimensionality tuning of RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ via biaxial strain

Kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) has emerged as an intriguing platform for exploring the interplay between superconductivity and other quantum states. Among the three compounds, RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ has a notably lower superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) at ambient pressure, posing challenges in exploring the superconducting state. For instance, the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) is small and thus difficult to measure accurately against other control parameters. Hence, enhancing superconductivity would facilitate $H_{c2}$ measurements, providing insights into key superconducting properties such as the dimensionality. In this letter, we report the tuning of the $T_c$ in RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ through the application of biaxial strain. Utilizing a negative thermal expansion material ZrW$_2$O$_8$ as a substrate, we achieve a substantial biaxial strain of $ε=1.50\%$, resulting in a remarkable 75\% enhancement in $T_c$. We investigate the $H_{c2}$ as a function of temperature, revealing a transition from multi-band to single-band superconductivity with increasing tensile strain. Additionally, we study the $H_{c2}$ as a function of field angle, revealing a plausible correlation between the $T_c$ enhancement and the change in dimensionality of the superconductivity under tensile strain. Further analysis quantitatively illustrates a transition towards two-dimensional superconductivity in RbV$_3$Sb$_5$ when subjected to tensile strain. Our work demonstrates that the application of biaxial strain allows for the tuning of both the $T_c$ and superconducting dimensionality in RbV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Gapless dispersive continuum in a modulated quantum kagome antiferromagnet

The pursuit of quantum spin liquid (QSL) states in condensed matter physics has drawn attention to kagome antiferromagnets (AFM) where a two-dimensional corner-sharing network of triangles frustrates conventional magnetic orders. While quantum kagome AFMs based on Cu$^{2+}$ (3d$^9$, $s=\frac{1}{2}$) ions have been extensively studied, there is so far little work beyond copper-based systems. Here we present our bulk magnetization, specific heat and neutron scattering studies on single crystals of a new titanium fluoride Cs$_8$RbK$_3$Ti$_{12}$F$_{48}$ where Ti$^{3+}$ (3d$^1$, $s = \frac{1}{2}$) ions form a modulated quantum kagome antiferromagnet that does not order magnetically down to 1.5 K. Our comprehensive map of the dynamic response function $S(Q,\hbarω)$ acquired at 1.5 K where the heat capacity is T-linear reveals a dispersive continuum emanating from soft lines that extend along (100). The data indicate fractionalized spinon-like excitations with quasi-one-dimensional dispersion within a quasi-two-dimensional spin system.

Pressure driven magnetic order in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$

The magnetic phase diagram of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ as a function of hydrostatic pressure and temperature is investigated by means of high pressure muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($μ^+$SR). The weak pressure dependence for the $x\neq1$ compounds suggests that the rich phase diagram of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ as a function of $x$ at ambient pressure may not only be attributed to solely chemical pressure effects. The $x=1$ compound on the other hand reveals a high pressure dependence, where the long range magnetic order is fully suppressed at $p_{\rm c2}\approx9.8$~kbar, which seem to be a first order transition. In addition, an intermediate phase consisting of dilute ferromagnetic islands (FMI) is formed above $p_{\rm c1}\approx8$~kbar where they co-exist with a magnetically disordered state. Moreover, such FMI phase seems to consist of an high- (FMI-\textcircled{\small{1}}) and low-temperature (FMI-\textcircled{\small{2}}) region, respectively, separated by a phase boundary at $T_{\rm i}\approx20$~K.

Co-existence of short- and long-range magnetic order in LaCo$_2$P$_2$

The ferromagnetic (FM) nature of the metallic LaCo$_2$P$_2$ was investigated with the positive muon spin rotation, relaxation and resonance ($μ^+$SR) technique. Transverse and zero field $μ^+$SR measurements revealed that the compound enters a long range FM ground state at $T_{\rm C}=130.91(65)$~K, consistent with previous studies. Based on the reported FM structure, the internal magnetic field was computed at the muon sites, which were predicted with first principles calculations. The computed result agree well with the experimental data. Moreover, although LaCo$_2$P$_2$ is a paramagnet at higher temperatures $T>160$~K, it enters a short range ordered (SRO) magnetic phase for $T_{\rm C}<T\leq160$~K. Measurements below the vicinity of $T_{\rm C}$ revealed that the SRO phase co-exists with the long range FM order at temperatures $124\leq T\leq T_{\rm C}$. Such co-existence is an intrinsic property and stems from competition between the 2D and 3D interactions/fluctuations.

Magnetic ordering with an XY-like anisotropy in the honeycomb lattice iridates ZnIrO$_3$ and MgIrO$_3$ synthesized via a metathesis reaction

We have successfully synthesized the novel antiferromagnets with Ir$^{4+}$ honeycomb lattice ZnIrO$_3$ and MgIrO$_3$ and investigated their magnetic and thermodynamic properties. The two iridates are isomorphic but exhibit qualitatively different magnetic properties. ZnIrO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic ordering below 46.6 K, whereas MgIrO$_3$ displays weak ferromagnetic behavior below 31.8 K owing to formation of a canted antiferromagnetic ordering. The measurement of magnetic susceptibility with using an oriented powder sample revealed the presence of an XY-like magnetic anisotropy and a tilting magnetic structure which is possibly stabilized by the Kitaev interaction. Moreover, magnetization curves of MgIrO3 and ZnIrO3 up to 60 T show different behaviors, demonstrating that each magnetic ground state is different with each other. We discuss the difference in the ground state between MgIrO$_3$ and ZnIrO$_3$ from the viewpoint a magnetic model consisting of the Kitaev and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions with the spin frustration effect on the honeycomb lattice.

Transitions from a Kondo-like diamagnetic insulator into a modulated ferromagnetic metal in $\bm{\mathrm{FeGa}_{3-y}\mathrm{Ge}_y}$

One initial and essential question of magnetism is whether the magnetic properties of a material are governed by localized moments or itinerant electrons. Here we expose the case for the weakly ferromagnetic system FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_y$ wherein these two opposite models are reconciled, such that the magnetic susceptibility is quantitatively explained by taking into account the effects of spin-spin correlation. With the electron doping introduced by Ge substitution, the diamagnetic insulating parent compound FeGa$_3$ becomes a paramagnetic metal as early as at $ y=0.01 $, and turns into a weakly ferromagnetic metal around the quantum critical point $ y=0.15 $. Within the ferromagnetic regime of FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_y$, the magnetic properties are of a weakly itinerant ferromagnetic nature, located in the intermediate regime between the localized and the itinerant dominance. Our analysis implies a potential universality for all itinerant-electron ferromagnets.

Strong Coupling Superconductivity in the Vicinity of the Structural Quantum Critical Point in (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$

The family of the superconducting quasi-skutterudites (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ features a structural quantum critical point at $x_c=0.9$, around which a dome-shaped variation of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is found. Using specific heat, we probe the normal and the superconducting states of the entire series straddling the quantum critical point. Our analysis indicates a significant lowering of the effective Debye temperature on approaching $x_c$, which we interpret as a result of phonon softening accompanying the structural instability. Furthermore, a remarkably large enhancement of $2Δ/k_BT_c$ and $ΔC/γT_c$ beyond the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) values is found in the vicinity of the structural quantum critical point. The phase diagram of (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ thus provides a model system to study the interplay between structural quantum criticality and strong electron-phonon coupling superconductivity.

Anomalous Itinerant-Electron Metamagnetic Transition in the Layered Sr1-xCaxCo2P2 System

We report magnetic properties of the layered itinerant system, Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$ in the magnetic field up to 70 T. As for the exchange-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal SrCo$_2$P$_2$, the magnetization curve shows two characteristic anomalies. The low-field anomaly is small without obvious hysteresis, and the high-field one is a typical behavior of the itinerant-electron metamagnetic transition (IEMT). Such a successive transition in the magnetization curve cannot be explained by the conventional phenomenological theory for IEMT due to the Landau expansion of the free energy, but by the extended Landau expansion theory with distinguishable two energy states. In the systematical study of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$Co$_2$P$_2$, furthermore, the metamagnetic transition field decreases and goes to zero as $x$ increases up to 0.5, indicating that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) exists at $x \sim 0.5$.

Large Magnetoresistance Effects in $Ln$CoAsO with a Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Transition

A large magnetoresistance (MR) effect was observed in the layered compounds NdCoAsO and SmCoAsO, in which ferromagnetically ordered itinerant-electrons of Co are sandwiched by localized 4$f$-electrons of $Ln^{3+}$, below ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition (FAFT) temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$ as observed in other FAFT compounds. In SmCoAsO, the large MR effect is also observed up to the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$, and it is found to be originating in the presence of another antiferromagnetic phase in the low-magnetic field region of the ferromagnetic phase.

Universal Phase Diagram and Reentrant Superconductivity of $Bi$layer Hydrated Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O

We report duration dependence of superconductivity in a 43 \% humidity atmosphere and $^{59}$Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) of polycrystalline samples of $bi$layer hydrated Na$_x$CoO$_2 \cdot y$H$_2$O. We found a reentrant behavior of superconductivity with respect to the time duration. We obtained the universal phase diagram where two superconducting phases and an in-between magnetic phase are classified by $^{59}$Co NQR frequency. Zero field $^{59}$Co nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ indicated a magnetic critical slowing down at 5 K in the magnetic phase, excluding a charge density wave ordering, and an enhancement at and just above $T_\mathrm{c}$ in a new superconducting phase, suggesting a coexistence of magnetic ordering.

Spectroscopic Study of $^{75}$As and $^{139}$La NMR on Layered Structure Ferromagnet LaCoAsO

$^{75}$As and $^{139}$La field-swept NMR spectra were obtained for the novel weakly itinerant ferromagnet LaCoAsO with 2D layered structure above the Curie temperature of 55 K. By analyzing NMR spectra, temperature dependences of Knight shift $K$ and nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency $ν_Q$ were obtained successfully for each nucleus. We confirmed from the so-called $K$-$χ$ plots that the macroscopic magnetization of our {LaCoAsO} powder sample is intrinsic and does not contain the contribution from impurity phases. We estimated hyperfine coupling constants from the slope of $K$-$χ$ plots and compared to that of iron-arsenide superconductor.

Magnetic and Superconducting Properties of Single Crystals of Fe$_{1+δ}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ System

The spin-fluctuation effect in the Se-substituted system Fe$_{1+δ}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ ($x$ = 0, 0.05, 0.12, 0.20, 0.28, 0.33, 0.45, 0.48 and 1.00; $0<δ< 0.12$) has been studied by the measurements of the X-ray diffraction, the magnetic susceptibility under high magnetic fields and the electrical resistivity under magnetic fields up to 14 T. The samples with $x$ = 0.05, 0.12, 0.20, 0.28, 0.33, 0.45 and 0.48 show superconducting transition temperatures in the ranger of 10 K$\sim$14 K. We obtained their intrinsic susceptibilities by the Honda-Owen method. A nearly linear-in-$T$ behavior in magnetic susceptibility of superconducting samples was observed, indicating the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations have a strong link with the superconductivity in this series. The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}^{orb}$ for $T\to$ 0 was estimated to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The Kadowaki-Woods and Wilson ratios indicate that electrons are strongly correlated in this system. Furthermore, the superconducting coherence length and the electron mean free path were also discussed. These superconducting parameters indicate that the superconductivity in the Fe$_{1+δ}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ system is unconventional.

Unconventional Superconductivity in the Novel Layered Superconductor Fe(Te-Se) Investigated by $^{125}$Te NMR on the Single Crystal

We have performed $^{125}$Te NMR on a single crystal of the novel layered superconductor Fe$_{1.04}$Te$_{0.67}$Se$_{0.33}$ for the first time. The spin parts of the Knight shifts for both $H // a$, $H // c$ are suppressed in the superconducting state, indicating the spin singlet superconductivity. At superconducting state, $1/T_{1}$ shows the power-law behavior ($\sim T^{3}$) without any coherent peaks. Observations of the residual density of state and the $T^{3}$-law indicate the presence of the line node in the superconducting gap. In the normal state, $1/T_{1}T$ which probes the \textbf{q}-summation of spin fluctuations enhances at low temperatures. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in Fe$_{1+δ}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ is stabilized by the growth of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as well as in FeSe.

Novel phase diagram of superconductor NaxCoO2-yH2O in a 75 % relative humidity

We succeeded in synthesizing the powder samples of bilayer-hydrate sodium cobalt oxide superconductors NaxCoO2-yH2O with Tc = 0 ~ 4.6 K by systematically changing the keeping duration in a 75 % relative humidity atmosphere after intercalation of water molecules. From the magnetic measurements, we found that the one-day duration sample does not show any superconductivity down to 1.8 K, and that the samples kept for 2 ~ 7 days show superconductivity, in which Tc increases up to 4.6 K with increasing the duration. Tc and the superconducting volume fraction are almost invariant between 7 days and 1month duration. The 59Co NQR spectra indicate a systematic change in the local charge distribution on the CoO2 plane with change in duration.
