Position of Effective Spins Induced by Dilution in Two-Dimensional Spin-Peierls Systems

The site- and bond-dilution effects of the nonmagnetic ground state of a two-dimensional $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, coupled with the lattice distortions on a square lattice, are investigated by performing quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the nondiluted system, a phase diagram parameterized by the interchain interaction and the elastic constant is obtained, and the values of the lattice distortions in the dimerized phase are evaluated precisely. In the diluted system, we compare two ground-state energies assuming two patterns of lattice distortions with magnetic moments (effective spins) induced near the diluted parts and induced at the midpoint between the diluted parts. As a result, we find that it is difficult to induce effective spins near diluted parts for large elastic constants, small interchain interactions, and large concentrations of dilution.

Spin-Wave Theory for the Scalar Chiral Phase in the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model on a Triangular Lattice

We study the effects of quantum fluctuations on a non-coplanar tetrahedral spin structure, which has a scalar chiral order, in the spin-1/2 multiple-spin exchange model with up to the six-spin exchange interactions on a triangular lattice. We find that, in the linear spin-wave approximation, the tetrahedral structure survives the quantum fluctuations because spin waves do not soften in the whole parameter region of the tetrahedral-structure phase evaluated for the classical system. In the quantum corrections to the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and scalar chirality, the effects of the quantum fluctuations are small for the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions and for the strong five-spin interactions. The six-spin interactions have little effect on the quantum corrections in the tetrahedral-structure phase. This calculation also corrects an error in the previously reported value of scalar chirality for the spin-1/2 multiple-spin exchange model with up to the four-spin exchange interactions.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model with up to the Six-Spin Exchange Interactions on the Triangular Lattice

The ground state of the multiple-spin exchange model with up to the six-spin exchange interactions on a triangular lattice in the magnetic field is investigated within the mean-field approximation. By comparing the phase diagrams of systems with and without the five- and six-spin interactions, we find that the five- and six-spin interactions expand the ferromagnetic phase. In contrast, the antiferromagnetic-like phases are contracted. A phase with a 1/2 plateau is also contracted by the five- and six-spin interactions. In addition to the results that have not yet been reported for systems with up to the four-spin interactions, we obtain new phases for systems with up to the six-spin interactions. In particular, a 1/6 plateau appears in the low magnetic field near the ferromagnetic phase in the magnetization process. This phase has a twelve-sublattice structure in which a unit cell consists of seven spins parallel to the magnetic field and five spins antiparallel to it.

Notes on Ground-State Properties of Mixed Spin-1 and Spin-1=2 Lieb-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations are performed to study ground-state properties of a mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Lieb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, in order to get further insight beyond the modified spin-wave (MSW) study reported in [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 86, 014002 (2017)]. It is confirmed that the MSW results are in good agreement with the QMC results. In particular, the scaling relation found in the MSW study, which argues that sublattice spin reductions are inversely proportional to the sublattice sizes, is observed in our QMC simulation. We present a rigorous proof for spontaneous sublattice magnetizations induced by an infinitesimal uniform magnetic field. The calculation process in the MSW theory is reexamined to clarify the mathematical structure behind the scaling relation for sublattice long-range orders.

Quantum Phase Transition in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains Coupled to Phonons

We develop an analytical approach based on a unitary transformation to investigate S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled to phonons, and find a new quantum phase transition at zero temperature. Although the usual phase transition occurs depending on the strengths of the spin-spin and spin-phonon interactions, the phase transition in the present work is induced by a change in the geometrical structure of the spin-phonon interaction. The magnetic properties of the phase transition can be understood in relation to a phase transition that has already been found in the frustrated J1-J2 model.

Bond-Dilution-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Bond-dilution effects on the ground state of the square-lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, consisting of coupled bond-alternating chains, are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that, when the ground state of the non-diluted system is a non-magnetic state with a finite spin gap, a sufficiently weak bond dilution induces a disordered state with a mid gap in the original spin gap, and under a further stronger bond dilution an antiferromagnetic long-range order emerges. While the site-dilution-induced long-range order is induced by an infinitesimal concentration of dilution, there exists a finite critical concentration in the case of bond dilution. We argue that this essential difference is due to the occurrence of two types of effective interactions between induced magnetic moments in the case of bond dilution, and that the antiferromagnetic long-range-ordered phase does not appear until the magnitudes of the two interactions become comparable.

Spin-Wave Theory of the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model on a Triangular Lattice in a Magnetic Field : 3-Sublattice Structures

We study the spin wave in the S=1/2 multiple-spin exchange model on a triangular lattice in a magnetic field within the linear spin-wave theory. We take only two-, three- and four-spin exchange interactions into account and restrict ourselves to the region where a coplanar three-sublattice state is the mean-field ground state. We found that the Y-shape ground state survives quantum fluctuations and the phase transition to a phase with a 6-sublattice structure occurs with softening of the spin wave. We estimated the quantum corrections to the ground state sublattice magnetizations due to zero-point spin-wave fluctuations.

Competition between Hidden Spin and Charge Orderings in Stripe Phase

The correlation between charge and spin orderings in hole-doped antiferromagnets is studied within an effective model of quantum strings fluctuating in an antiferromagnetic background. In particular, we perform the direct estimation of the charge and spin long-range-order parameters by means of the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. A hidden spin long-range order is found to be governed by a competition between the two trends caused by increasing hole mobility: the enhancement of the two-dimensional spin-spin correlation mediated by hole motions and the reformation of a strong stripe order.

Quantum Phase Transitions of Quasi-One-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

We study the ground-state phase transitions of quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets by the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm and finite-size scaling. For a model which consists of S=1 chains with bond alternation coupled on a square lattice, we determine the ground state phase diagram and the universality class of the quantum phase transitions.

Ground state of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder in terms of the valence-bond solid picture

We have proposed the plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) ground state for the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder. Based on the PSS picture, we discuss the correspondence of the PSS state to the valence-bond solid (VBS) state of the ground state of spin-2 chain by introducing an appropriate composite spin picture. When the bond alternation is introduced, there occur quantum phase transitions and each phase can be identified with that in the dimerized spin-2 chain. Furthermore, we argue that the VBS picture of spin-2S chain can be applied to the ground state of spin-S two-leg ladder.

Dilution Effects on Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnets with Non-Magnetic Spin-Gapped Ground State

Dilution effects on spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets with a non-magnetic spin-gapped ground state are studied by means of the qunatum Monte Carlo simulation. In the site-diluted system, an antiferromagnetic long-range order (AF-LRO) is induced at an infinitesimal concentration of dilution due to an effective coupling $\tilde{J}_{mn}$ between induced magnetic moments. In the bond-diluted case, on the other hand, the AF-LRO is not induced up to a certain concentration of dilution due to singlet pairs reformed by an AF coupling $\tilde{J}_{\rm af}$ between the edge spins of the diluted bond through the two-dimensional shortest paths. The competition between $\tilde{J}_{mn}$ and $\tilde{J}_{\rm af}$ yields peculiar phenomena in the bond-diluted system.

Bond-Dilution Effects on Two-Dimensional Spin-Gapped Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Bond-dilution effects on spin-1/2 spin-gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets of coupled alternating chains on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that, in contrast with the site-diluted system having an infinitesimal critical concentration, the bond-diluted system has a finite critical concentration of diluted bonds, $x_{c}$, above which the system is in an antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase. In the disordered phase below $x_{c}$, plausibly in the concentration region significantly less than $x_{c}$, the system has a spin gap due to singlet pairs of induced magnetic moments reformed by the AF interactions through the two-dimensional shortest paths.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnets on the Anisotropic Dimerized Square Lattice

The S=1/2 and S=1 two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the anisotropic dimerized square lattice are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. By finite-size-scaling analyses on the correlation lengths, the ground-state phase diagram parametrized by strengths of the dimerization and of the spatial anisotropy is determined much more accurately than the previous works. It is confirmed that the quantum critical phenomena on the phase boundaries belong to the same universality class as that of the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Furthermore, for S=1, we show that all the spin-gapped phases, such as the Haldane and dimer phases, are adiabatically connected in the extended parameter space, though they are classified into different classes in terms of the string order parameter in the one-dimensional, i.e., the zero-interchain-coupling, case.

Plaquette-singlet solid state and topological hidden order in spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder

Ground-state properties of the spin-1 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder are investigated precisely by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the correlation length along the chains and the spin gap both remain finite regardless of the strength of interchain coupling, i.e., the Haldane state and the spin-1 dimer state are connected smoothly without any quantum phase transitions between them. We propose a plaquette-singlet solid state, which qualitatively describes the ground state of the spin-1 ladder quite well, and also a corresponding topological hidden order parameter. It is shown numerically that the new hidden order parameter remains finite up to the dimer limit, though the conventional string order defined on each chain vanishes immediately when infinitesimal interchain coupling is introduced.

Site-Dilution-Induced Antiferromagnetic Long-Range Order in Two-Dimensional Spin-Gapped Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Effects of the site dilution on spin-gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets with $S=1/2$ and S=1 on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that effective magnetic moments induced around the diluted sites exhibit the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the medium of spin-singlet pairs. Their microscopic structure is examined in detail and important roles of the higher dimensionality than one on the phenomenon are discussed.

Spin Dependence of the Critical Concentration for the Neel State of 2D Impure Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

The spin-wave theory and the coherent potential approximation are applied to a spin S Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nonmagnetic impurities on square lattice. The impurity effects are taken into account by substituting S(1-x) for S and using the coherent potential approximation to the exchange interaction, where x is the impurity concentration. At T=0 for S=1/2 the critical impurity concentration xc of the Neel state is 0.303 and the percolation threshold xp is 0.500. The ground state in xc =1 the long range Neel order vanishes at xp=0.500. These results explain qualitatively the experimental results of La2Cu(1-x)Mg(x)O4 (S=1/2) and K2Mn(1-x)Mg(x)F4 (S=5/2). The difference of xc between these materials is caused by the decrease in the magnitude of the effective spin with impurity doping. The spin gap is expected to be observed for La2Cu(1-x)Mg(x)O4 in xc<x<xp at low temperatures.
