Nonequilibrium dynamics of polymer translocation: a mean-field model

We analyse the dynamics of polymer translocation in the strong force regime by recasting the problem into solving a differential equation with a moving absorbing boundary. For the total translocation time, $τ_{\rm tr}$, our simple mean-field model predicts that $τ_{\rm tr}\sim$ (number of monomers)$^{1.5}$, which is in agreement with the exponent found in previous simulation results. Our model also predicts intricate dependencies of $τ_{\rm tr}$ on the variations of the pulling force and of the temperature.

Realistic network growth using only local information: From random to scale-free and beyond

We introduce a simple one-parameter network growth algorithm which is able to reproduce a wide variety of realistic network structures but without having to invoke any global information about node degrees such as preferential-attachment probabilities. Scale-free networks arise at the transition point between quasi-random and quasi-ordered networks. We provide a detailed formalism which accurately describes the entire network range, including this critical point. Our formalism is built around a statistical description of the inter-node linkages, as opposed to the single-node degrees, and can be applied to any real-world network -- in particular, those where node-node degree correlations might be important.

Sequential recruitment and combinatorial assembling of multiprotein complexes in transcriptional activation

In human cells, estrogenic signals induce cyclical association and dissociation of specific proteins with the DNA in order to activate transcription of estrogen-responsive genes. These oscillations can be modeled by assuming a large number of sequential reactions represented by linear kinetics with random kinetic rates. Application of the model to experimental data predicts robust binding sequences in which proteins associate with the DNA at several different phases of the oscillation. Our methods circumvent the need to derive detailed kinetic graphs, and are applicable to other oscillatory biological processes involving a large number of sequential steps.

Optically controlled spin-glasses in multi-qubit cavity systems

Recent advances in nanostructure fabrication and optical control, suggest that it will soon be possible to prepare collections of interacting two-level systems (i.e. qubits) within an optical cavity. Here we show theoretically that such systems could exhibit novel phase transition phenomena involving spin-glass phases. By contrast with traditional realizations using magnetic solids, these phase transition phenomena are associated with both matter and radiation subsystems. Moreover the various phase transitions should be tunable simply by varying the matter-radiation coupling strength.

Renormalization scheme for a multi-qubit-network

We present a renormalization scheme which simplifies the dynamics of an important class of interacting multi-qubit systems. We show that a wide class of M+1 qubit systems can be reduced to an equivalent n+1 qubit system with n equal to, or greater than, 2, for any M. Our renormalization scheme faithfully reproduces the overall dynamics of the original system including the entanglement properties. In addition to its direct application to atom-cavity and nanostructure systems, the formalism offers insight into a variety of situations ranging from decoherence due to a spin-bath with its own internal entanglement, through to energy transfer processes in organic systems such as biological photosynthetic units.

Exploring super-radiant phase transitions via coherent control of a multi-qubit--cavity system

We propose the use of coherent control of a multi-qubit--cavity QED system in order to explore novel phase transition phenomena in a general class of multi-qubit--cavity systems. In addition to atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transitions should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity mode.

An adaptive Metropolis-Hastings scheme: sampling and optimization

We propose an adaptive Metropolis-Hastings algorithm in which sampled data are used to update the proposal distribution. We use the samples found by the algorithm at a particular step to form the information-theoretically optimal mean-field approximation to the target distribution, and update the proposal distribution to be that approximatio. We employ our algorithm to sample the energy distribution for several spin-glasses and we demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm to the conventional MH algorithm in sampling and in annealing optimization.

Efficient quantum computation within a disordered Heisenberg spin-chain

We show that efficient quantum computation is possible using a disordered Heisenberg spin-chain with `always-on' couplings. Such disorder occurs naturally in nanofabricated systems. Considering a simple chain setup, we show that an arbitrary two-qubit gate can be implemented using just three relaxations of a controlled qubit, which amounts to switching the on-site energy terms at most twenty-one times.

First-order super-radiant phase transitions in a multi-qubit--cavity system

We predict the existence of novel first-order phase transitions in a general class of multi-qubit-cavity systems. Apart from atomic systems, the associated super-radiant phase transition should be observable in a variety of solid-state experimental systems, including the technologically important case of interacting quantum dots coupled to an optical cavity mode.

Quantum comparison machines with one-sided error

It is always possible to decide, with one-sided error, whether two quantum states are the same under a specific unitary transformation. However we show here that it is {\em impossible} to do so if the transformation is anti-linear and non-singular. This result implies that unitary and anti-unitary operations exist on an unequal footing in quantum information theory.

Interacting many-body systems as non-cooperative games

We explore the possibility that physical phenomena arising from interacting multi-particle systems, can be usefully interpreted in terms of multi-player games. We show how non-cooperative phenomena can emerge from Ising Hamiltonians, even though the individual spins behave cooperatively. Our findings establish a mapping between two fundamental models from condensed matter physics and game theory.

Game-theoretic discussion of quantum state estimation and cloning

We present a game-theoretic perspective on the problems of quantum state estimation and quantum cloning. This enables us to show why the focus on universal machines and the different measures of success, as employed in previous works, are in fact legitimite.

Non-Cooperative Quantum Game Theory

The physical world obeys the rules of quantum, as opposed to classical, physics. Since the playing of any particular game requires physical resources, the question arises as to how Game Theory itself would change if it were extended into the quantum domain. Here we provide a general formalism for {\em quantum} games, and illustrate the explicit application of this new formalism to a quantized version of the well-known prisoner's dilemma game.

Quantum coherence, correlated noise and Parrondo games

We discuss the effect of correlated noise on the robustness of quantum coherent phenomena. First we consider a simple, toy model to illustrate the effect of such correlations on the decoherence process. Then we show how decoherence rates can be suppressed using a Parrondo-like effect. Finally, we report the results of many-body calculations in which an experimentally-measurable quantum coherence phenomenon is significantly enhanced by non-Markovian dynamics arising from the noise source.

Exploiting Randomness in Quantum Information Processing

We consider how randomness can be made to play a useful role in quantum information processing - in particular, for decoherence control and the implementation of quantum algorithms. For a two-level system in which the decoherence channel is non-dissipative, we show that decoherence suppression is possible if memory is present in the channel. Random switching between two potentially harmful noise sources can then provide a source of stochastic control. Such random switching can also be used in an advantageous way for the implementation of quantum algorithms.

Parrondo Games and Quantum Algorithms

We pursue the possible connections between classical games and quantum computation. The Parrondo game is one in which a random combination of two losing games produces a winning game. We introduce novel realizations of this Parrondo effect in which the player can `win' via random reflections and rotations of the state-vector, and connect these to known quantum algorithms.
